You only have to put a globe in a classroom of kids and they will quickly see what is what. The atlas map as it is, is just a convenience that has been blown up into a cultural political issue.

Map projections aren't lies. They're tools, designed for specific tasks. Using a ruler when what you need is a caliper will give unsatisfactory results. Does that make a ruler a lie?
^^^^ THIS!!! I know every video has to have it's clickbait headline to suck people in, but judging by the comments a lot of people really aren't understanding this basic concept. Map projections aren't about "imperialism" or lying, they're about the fundamental problem of projecting a 3D spherical object onto a 2D flat plane. There are different projections for different applications and each creates some distortion or has one drawback or another but they're suited to their task. If people want complete realism, they should buy a good quality globe or use a 3D digital model.
Did you even watch the video? They were creating maps that most certainly were lies in order to intimidate their enemies or manipulate the general public. Like America thinks they are bigger than Canada but they aren't. America wants people to believe they are and that's where the lie comes in. There are times where maps are just misleading, but a good portion of the time they are being manipulated for political reasons. "History is written by the winners" and so are maps.
@@hotcrazycatladyme168 on the Mercator Projection, Canada is much bigger than the US because it’s closer to the Pole. Other maps were produced that showed the closeness of one place to another (for example, there’s only 2 miles between Russia and the United States at their closest point, but standard maps don’t show it clearly) but they weren’t arbitrarily drawn to distort things, they were attempts to show things in a different perspective. As long as the projection is done using proper mathematics to translate the spherical plane to a flat one, then it’s not a lie. Any map produced by any legitimate mathematical model to represent a curved body on a flat plane is a legitimate map. Like statistics though, anyone can selectively or without context pick a map that best suits what they want to show (whether for the purpose of misleading people or just to highlight a particular point), the legitimacy of the map though depends on whether it’s drawn from solid mathematics or not.
Except, that nothing makes sense on a universe scale unless the Earth is a globe. The seasons don't make sense. The "rise" and "setting" of the sun in conjunction with the seasons doesn't make sense. The weather doesn't make sense. ALL of these are proven if the Earth is a globe that rotates.
@@theodorefreeman it's Because the sun and the moon aren't what we've been told they are. If we look at them like heat generators with a temperature and light that can be adjusted it makes more sense. A few years Ago I remember seeing a video of a professor explaining it, and providing his mathematical and engineering proof. He wasn't in his classroom explaining it, he was on the side of the road in his car. And was very reluctant to explain it to the videographer. Almost like he was afraid. But now with how the world is currently where diversity is embraced everywhere with the glaring exception of diversity of _thought_ it makes even more sense.
For what its worth, we should still give respect to Mercator who came up with a modern map (at the time) of what the world's continents, islands and oceans were like. He did all that with out google maps, satellites, airplanes, and without an iPhone. I still say that is impressive. And the purpose of the Mercator map was for sailing, not for studying land mass or becoming a geography scholar. Shame on ths scholars for not working to find out if the Mercator map was legit or not. Sure Mercator's map fizzled out due to technology but I still think he should be given some sort of credit for his "invention"

When I was a child, I remember going to a library with my grandpa in Alabama. We always went to the map section and he taught me about the old maps, but not the sphere glob. Very interesting video.
The wall of ice around our teraferma is the boundaries for the waters. Just as it is written in the Holy Word of God. The globe is a lie. They lie to hide God.
I have known for a long time about the area distortion in Mercator, but I tend keep forgetting how much the distortion is. I only noticed recently though, that the equator is not shown half way down; it is shown lower than half way, so the northern hemisphere is given space than the southern.
I learned this back in junior high, my teacher explained the different maps and how they served different purposes...they don't teach this anymore...like a LOT of things sadly enough.

The argument here (the REAL one) is about the relative sizes and distances between continents etc. and how to depict them on a flat surface. And why is that so difficult? Because the earth is a GLOBE.

Actually.. the UN map is of a flat earth surrounded by an ice wall with other continents outside of that wall. And, flight navigation is based on a circular flat model of the earth. Those maps are provable and accurate.
I have taken to asking pilots if there is a curvature to the earth. Every one of them answered with a resounding no. A couple of of them laughed at the idea the earth is a globe.

Mercator's early maps depicted dry land at the north pole, with rivers that flow out in four directions, and a large magnetic rock in the center. They were also azimuthal equidistant maps that make sense of intercontinental flights that take wild, out of the way routes "to account for curvature", but there's never any accounting for curvature over dry land, for some strange reason!

I believe the true meaning of space is the space (land) here on earth that we aren’t allowed to see or go to.. One thing for sure, there is much MUCH more land here then we’re shown on the map. I was taught, in 1960's public school, the differences in the types of maps and the reasons for using the different type. No secrets, no lies. It shouldn't be an issue for anyone. Sadly, today's schools have changed a lot. Will we ever get back to giving our children and grandchildren an honest education?
I would like to see the truth be taught. So we have different types of maps for commercial and military use. What is the true form of the land our people die for? It is this kind if truth that should be taught; for the wisdom, not the dollar.

The world is flat and that is that. Try to navigate on a globe and you will crash and burn. No measurement of curvature has ever been recorded. Curvature can be calculated but cannot be measured.
I thought the Mercator projection was mostly phased out decades ago. National Geographic since 1998 has used the Winkel Tripel projection and for a decade prior the somewhat similar Robinson projection.
I remember learning that as a kid too. Equatorial landmasses are shrunken to fit (ie. Africa is underestimated, Central America, South Eastern Asia), landmasses at the tropics & beyond are wildly expanded to fit (Greenland, Canada, Russia, Antarctica).
@@murrijuana2842 It's called the Mercator Projection & it's intended purpose is to create a flat rectangular map of something believed to be wrapped around the surface of a sphere. So it can be put on a wall or table top I guess. Lines of longitude (north - south lines) go from being curved, to flat/straight on the Mercator map. This is what creates the distortion of sizes of the landmasses.

A few years ago I saw a striking Mercator style map for sale with everything flipped upside down and Australia smack dab in the middle. I believe it was a semi-serious poke at the manipulations maps can be used for.
The only one lying is the one who made this video. The Mercator projection was made for navigation not for representing areas in the correct proportions. To say the MP is lying is like saying cars are useless because they can't cook dinner.
I served. Believe me. This place we live on is all mapped out. Accurately! And it's flat. You don't need a globe. You can see it. LOL. Every operation and mission we initiated at sea assumed a flat earth. Even aircraft and radar operations. I plotted enemy vessels at sea 50 plus miles away. This was before modern day warship equipment. Not possible if a curve existed. Old AE Gleason maps are pretty accurate from my 4 years of sailing experience. I crossed the equator twice. Some early 1900s maps are too. Prior to 1900, most knew the earth was not a cannonball. History has been rewritten. Ask questions. Research official military war maps. Old ones are declassified. You'll see. Every corner is mapped out. The ground soldiers can't navigate without them. Injured soldiers are located using these maps. Every piece of land and sea has a coordinate #. Soldiers locate their injured comrades using these battle maps. Heavy guns and missiles on the ships can strike hundreds of miles away easily. And guess what? Earth curvature is NOT a consideration or issue. Why? There is none. I've sailed the Pacific and the Indian oceans extensively! Ship's big eyes and binoculars always brought the target over the horizon back in view. At 60,000 feet flying level, our pilots could see entire states and countries. Not possible to see that far if the ground below curves while the plane remains level. I hope people wake up to this deception. It leads to more deception. Which leads to liberty. Real liberty.

@@karenzupanic718 I've been at sea. No curve. I've flown in planes. No curve. I've sailed from California to Korea and back. 3 times. Lots of level water out there. I've jumped out of planes and into the ocean - with parachutes. The horizon rises and is always flat. So I really don't need their confirmation. Neither do you. If we lived on a cannonball, there must be measurable curvature and it must be easily detectable - especially given the fact that the entire thing is curved. According to the heliocentric model, earth has to curve at approximately 8inch per mile squared. Anyone can test the theory. It fails everytime. Buy a telescope. You don't need pilots or me convincing you of anything. You are capable of deciphering for yourself. I plotted enemy vessels at sea. According to the globe math, my targets should have been hidden beyond the curve. So I don't need those pilots to tell me. Even if I wasn't in the Navy, there's a lot of other undeniable proof that we ain't speeding through space. I don't know how I could've ever believed in the heliocentric model. I was programmed and unable to think about it all.

I learned the problems that the inequalities of distance decrease per degree of latitude as latitude get farther from the equator early on when I asked dad why the roads 8 miles north of town jogged over a half-mile and north of that there was a jog in the north-south dirt roads every 6 miles of a few yards. He explained Correction lines and The Public Land Survey System (PLSS).
Seems to me, over the last 4 years of research, that Alex Gleason's 1892 map is the most accurate. I am new to Vibes of Cosmos but I find their lunar plasma Earth map extremely intriguing.
It is a projection of the globe. It happens to be centred on the North pole, but it could be centred on any position you wanted to put it. And every one of them would still be a projection of the globe that we live on.

Same story when the sun travels away from us (so-called sunset)..... it simply moves so far away from us that we cannot see it anymore!
We purchased a 14 inch globe which now takes pride of place in our living room. It's a marvelous conversation piece during family and friends gatherings.
It's all about what you Know and what you have been Told. We get told a lot of things in life and believe them blindly. Some are true others are not. Water seeks it's own level and the Earth is 71 percent water. Sounds like it's a level playing field.
And something else to consider: Continuous, level flight on a ball is impossible. Why? All planes rely on a gyro for level flight. A fully functional gyro cannot follow a continuous downward curve. It must operate at the position in which it started.. the flat tarmac. This means planes flying level would eventually exit the bounds of our flyable atmosphere.
I began watching this video with a very cynical, “Oh, don’t tell me you’re going to belabor the very obvious pinching at the poles…”, but I am pleasantly surprised at how in depth the video goes and how much historical background it gives. On a side note, the video mentions illustrators of the past and it just so happens that I am a professional illustrator. Nice video!
On the Mercator map, the horizontal lines at the poles are the same length as the one at the equator, yet they represent a geometric point with no width whatsoever.

We do not live on a globe, we live on a plane of inertia where material objects become manifest. Some call it flat Earth but that term confuses people. We are lied to on a regular basis.

I have seen a crazy map, which states that we know only half of the continents. However crazy it may sounds, I just can't rule it out. People just don't float or fly in those zones.

It's such a tedious cliche; "You are being LIED TO by maps". It is literally a mathematical impossibility to have an accurate map since there does not exist an isometry between the plane and the sphere. It's not some huge conspiracy or a ''lie", it's just not possible to have a map free from distortion. This means you have to choose which things you are going to allow to be distorted in your projection. Europeans navigating the oceans wanted a map that was good for navigation and depicting Europe. Any other civilisation in history has done likewise. There is no willful desire to lie using cartography.
Well, the message is, that nobody teaches us, that those maps are false with your explanation. Be open about it, so that people are aware of this. Thats all. I am 55 and this is the first time I hear about this and like somebody else wrote above: This opens the possibilities of unknown lands not being shown in maps for example and other questions.
You can see that lat and long lines on a globe clearly close up towards the poles - no secret to me as a child but then my parents bought me a globe. To open it out and lay it flat it will unavoidably create distortion. And, yes, the globe model that is for educational purposes is also a map and has a legend showing single scale and distance conversion. Once you get one, start measuring distances and compare to the map you use for turn by turn directions. They will match. I have a video about this on my channel. :)
The question isn't "is this map lying?" but more "do I care about the lie this particular map is telling me?" Every flat map of the earth has to distort something. The Mercator Projection preserves lines of constant bearing, i.e. any straight line drawn on the map can be followed by pointing a vessel to a specific compass bearing - but it sacrifices shape and distance to do so. It was purpose-designed for navigation. There are projections where areas are preserved at the cost of shape and distance. Others that preserve those very characteristics and sacrifice area. The Mercator projection badly distorts the size of things as you move away from the equator. Because we associate size with power and status, it is frequently attacked for this "lie". The truth is that it wasn't designed to represent size. It was designed to represent a specific interpretation of direction and does so very well. The problem is misusing a purpose-specific map projection beyond its intended use and without context to understand why that might be bad or selecting a better projection for the intended use.
Think about it Darren. If the map is how it is due to naval navigation please tell me how someone gets to the bottom of Greenland following that map. When they get to the co-ordinates on the map Greenland will not be there as it cannot be in two different places at the same time.

You then travel in that direction until you reach your destination. The compass bearing never changes during your journey. Note that this may not be the shortest path to that location, only the one where you don't have to change compass bearing. Keep in mind, the coordinates themselves are a mathematical overlay on the globe. The Mercator projection is isomorphic relative to the globe for anything but the poles (due to the math, the latitude is stretched to infinity at the pole itself). This means that there is always a 1 to 1 translation of coordinates. For an easy example, let's do a similar mapping with two rulers: one in millimeters and one in inches. 1 millimeter is roughly 1/25th of an inch. If you are mapping, in the mathematical sense, a location in inches to its corresponding location in mm, there aren't more locations just because the millimeters are smaller and the inches are larger. There is a 1.5 location on both rulers. Everything gets smaller in mm and larger in inches but there is still a single 1.5 on each ruler. Go half way between 0 and 1.5 and there is a .75 location on both rulers. Your limits become physical (how small can I draw) and not mathematical (can I calculate this). Back to the Mercator projection , for any pair of non-pole latitude and longitude coordinates on the globe, there is exactly one location on the Mercator projection that corresponds to it. The reverse is true too: for any coordinates on the Mercator projection there is one corresponding location on the globe.
Do those straight lines to places change on a globe? They shouldn’t of sizes are correct. The earth is pear 🍐 shaped. Where’s the top of the pear? That’s changed a number of times too.

For most purposes though, that lack of perfection is not really of interest as the maps are nowhere near large enough or detailed enough to show the distortion. As to the question about straight lines changing on the globe, your question is not very specific but I can guess at your meaning. If you draw a shortest route line on a globe, it will be an arc segment; that is the equivalent of a straight line on a map. If you try to navigate this, you would find that the compass direction to your destination changes as you move along the arc. It would be difficult to navigate to using only a compass. Conversely, if you were to transfer the route from a Mercator projection back to the globe, the path would most likely be closer to a semi-spiral route and not a simple arc but, once you determined its compass bearing, you could go directly there by pointing yourself at that compass bearing and following it to the destination.
If the earth is flat, then the moon and sun must be flat too. Here's one for you. When our rockets, satillites, ships, leave earth's atmosphere, all the stars disappear. The view of earth from the moon, by the astronauts, shows no stars in space around earth. So, why do all stars disappear when we leave earth's atmosphere?

The stars don't disappear. Starlight is very faint and therefore is too weak to be picked up by a camera with a short exposure time. Have you ever tried photographing the stars yourself? Unless you use a long exposure time on a professional camera you won't see any stars in your photograph.

Now nasa has photo shopped some pics, putting stars in, but 90 percent of 1000s of pics have no stars. It takes an atmosphere to see stats apparently.. ECT.
Things this perspective is an exaggeration, of which I have seen a similar educational video before explaining the difference between the globe perspective and the map perspective, and I had no trouble comprehending comparison… Of which yes there is a major difference between the global perspective from the paper or book layout… but my mind and mentality actually was able to compensate the difference. Or am I one of few that is actually smart enough to understand this factor?
Remember, if they had the shape correct, there'd be no 1000 year old arguments about how to map the continents onto it. The reason the map is always being declared incorrect is because the underlying model is incorrect.

Map projections aren't lies. They're tools, designed for specific tasks. Using a ruler when what you need is a caliper will give unsatisfactory results. Does that make a ruler a lie?

I know every video has to have it's clickbait headline to suck people in, but judging by the comments a lot of people really aren't understanding this basic concept. Map projections aren't about "imperialism" or lying, they're about the fundamental problem of projecting a 3D spherical object onto a 2D flat plane.
There are different projections for different applications and each creates some distortion or has one drawback or another but they're suited to their task. If people want complete realism, they should buy a good quality globe or use a 3D digital model.
I think a better title would be ‘maps are misleading’, not ‘lying’.
Did you even watch the video? They were creating maps that most certainly were lies in order to intimidate their enemies or manipulate the general public. Like America thinks they are bigger than Canada but they aren't. America wants people to believe they are and that's where the lie comes in.
There are times where maps are just misleading, but a good portion of the time they are being manipulated for political reasons. "History is written by the winners" and so are maps.

Other maps were produced that showed the closeness of one place to another (for example, there’s only 2 miles between Russia and the United States at their closest point, but standard maps don’t show it clearly) but they weren’t arbitrarily drawn to distort things, they were attempts to show things in a different perspective. As long as the projection is done using proper mathematics to translate the spherical plane to a flat one, then it’s not a lie.
Any map produced by any legitimate mathematical model to represent a curved body on a flat plane is a legitimate map. Like statistics though, anyone can selectively or without context pick a map that best suits what they want to show (whether for the purpose of misleading people or just to highlight a particular point), the legitimacy of the map though depends on whether it’s drawn from solid mathematics or not.

If we look at them like heat generators with a temperature and light that can be adjusted it makes more sense. A few years Ago I remember seeing a video of a professor explaining it, and providing his mathematical and engineering proof. He wasn't in his classroom explaining it, he was on the side of the road in his car. And was very reluctant to explain it to the videographer. Almost like he was afraid. But now with how the world is currently where diversity is embraced everywhere with the glaring exception of diversity of _thought_ it makes even more sense.

For what its worth, we should still give respect to Mercator who came up with a modern map (at the time) of what the world's continents, islands and oceans were like. He did all that with out google maps, satellites, airplanes, and without an iPhone. I still say that is impressive. And the purpose of the Mercator map was for sailing, not for studying land mass or becoming a geography scholar. Shame on ths scholars for not working to find out if the Mercator map was legit or not.

I have known for a long time about the area distortion in Mercator, but I tend keep forgetting how much the distortion is.
I only noticed recently though, that the equator is not shown half way down; it is shown lower than half way, so the northern hemisphere is given space than the southern.
I love the humor at the end. It actually made me laugh. That doesn't happen often.
I learned this back in junior high, my teacher explained the different maps and how they served different purposes...they don't teach this anymore...like a LOT of things sadly enough.

I have taken to asking pilots if there is a curvature to the earth. Every one of them answered with a resounding no. A couple of of them laughed at the idea the earth is a globe.

I believe the true meaning of space is the space (land) here on earth that we aren’t allowed to see or go to.. One thing for sure, there is much MUCH more land here then we’re shown on the map. I was taught, in 1960's public school, the differences in the types of maps and the reasons for using the different type. No secrets, no lies. It shouldn't be an issue for anyone. I thought the Mercator projection was mostly phased out decades ago. National Geographic since 1998 has used the Winkel Tripel projection and for a decade prior the somewhat similar Robinson projection.

I was taught in early public elementary school that the map distorted the further from the equator. I seriously thought everybody knew that.
I remember learning that as a kid too. Equatorial landmasses are shrunken to fit (ie. Africa is underestimated, Central America, South Eastern Asia), landmasses at the tropics & beyond are wildly expanded to fit (Greenland, Canada, Russia, Antarctica).

@@murrijuana2842 It's called the Mercator Projection & it's intended purpose is to create a flat rectangular map of something believed to be wrapped around the surface of a sphere. So it can be put on a wall or table top I guess.
Lines of longitude (north - south lines) go from being curved, to flat/straight on the Mercator map. This is what creates the distortion of sizes of the landmasses.

A few years ago I saw a striking Mercator style map for sale with everything flipped upside down and Australia smack dab in the middle. I believe it was a semi-serious poke at the manipulations maps can be used for.

Some early 1900s maps are too. Prior to 1900, most knew the earth was not a cannonball. History has been rewritten. Ask questions. Research official military war maps. Old ones are declassified. You'll see. Every corner is mapped out. The ground soldiers can't navigate without them. Injured soldiers are located using these maps. Every piece of land and sea has a coordinate #. Soldiers locate their injured comrades using these battle maps. Heavy guns and missiles on the ships can strike hundreds of miles away easily. And guess what? Earth curvature is NOT a consideration or issue. Why? There is none. I've sailed the Pacific and the Indian oceans extensively! Ship's big eyes and binoculars always brought the target over the horizon back in view. At 60,000 feet flying level, our pilots could see entire states and countries. Not possible to see that far if the ground below curves while the plane remains level. I hope people wake up to this deception. It leads to more deception. Which leads to liberty. Real liberty.

I've jumped out of planes and into the ocean - with parachutes. The horizon rises and is always flat. So I really don't need their confirmation. Neither do you. If we lived on a cannonball, there must be measurable curvature and it must be easily detectable - especially given the fact that the entire thing is curved. According to the heliocentric model, earth has to curve at approximately 8inch per mile squared. Anyone can test the theory. It fails everytime. Buy a telescope. You don't need pilots or me convincing you of anything. You are capable of deciphering for yourself. I plotted enemy vessels at sea. According to the globe math, my targets should have been hidden beyond the curve. So I don't need those pilots to tell me. I learned the problems that the inequalities of distance decrease per degree of latitude as latitude get farther from the equator early on when I asked dad why the roads 8 miles north of town jogged over a half-mile and north of that there was a jog in the north-south dirt roads every 6 miles of a few yards. All planes rely on a gyro for level flight. A fully functional gyro cannot follow a continuous downward curve.
It must operate at the position in which it started.. the flat tarmac.

Every public school classroom I was ever in had a globe. These issues were presented and discussed in multiple classes.

It's such a tedious cliche; "You are being LIED TO by maps". It is literally a mathematical impossibility to have an accurate map since there does not exist an isometry between the plane and the sphere. It's not some huge conspiracy or a ''lie", it's just not possible to have a map free from distortion. This means you have to choose which things you are going to allow to be distorted in your projection. Europeans navigating the oceans wanted a map that was good for navigation and depicting Europe. Any other civilisation in history has done likewise. There is no willful desire to lie using cartography.

Well, the message is, that nobody teaches us, that those maps are false with your explanation. Be open about it, so that people are aware of this. Thats all. I am 55 and this is the first time I hear about this and like somebody else wrote above: This opens the possibilities of unknown lands not being shown in maps for example and other questions.
You can see that lat and long lines on a globe clearly close up towards the poles - no secret to me as a child but then my parents bought me a globe. To open it out and lay it flat it will unavoidably create distortion. Steady on with your rationality and plain common-sense - no space for it on this page it seems- the number and type of comments on this page is what is truly scary!!

@@OneBlueFroggy I Agree. Humans can perceive a mere .1-.5 meters per second of motion. The slowest of the ludicrous speeds that science claims the Earth does is 460 meters per second. Plus, 2 of these motions are circular which means they MUST have acceleration due to vector changes. ONLY when moving in a straight line at a constant speed would you not feel the acceleration. Why is it so hard for people to realize the sky is moving over a stationary Earth?

And, yes, the globe model that is for educational purposes is also a map and has a legend showing single scale and distance conversion. Once you get one, start measuring distances and compare to the map you use for turn by turn directions.

The question isn't "is this map lying?" but more "do I care about the lie this particular map is telling me?" Every flat map of the earth has to distort something. The Mercator Projection preserves lines of constant bearing, i.e. any straight line drawn on the map can be followed by pointing a vessel to a specific compass bearing - but it sacrifices shape and distance to do so. It was purpose-designed for navigation. There are projections where areas are preserved at the cost of shape and distance. Others that preserve those very characteristics and sacrifice area. The Mercator projection badly distorts the size of things as you move away from the equator. Because we associate size with power and status, it is frequently attacked for this "lie". The truth is that it wasn't designed to represent size. It was designed to represent a specific interpretation of direction and does so very well. The problem is misusing a purpose-specific map projection beyond its intended use and without context to understand why that might be bad or selecting a better projection for the intended use.
Think about it Darren. If the map is how it is due to naval navigation please tell me how someone gets to the bottom of Greenland following that map. When they get to the co-ordinates on the map Greenland will not be there as it cannot be in two different places at the same time.
@@saintsone7877 The map is designed to create lines of constant bearing, you locate your destination and determine its compass bearing from your current location. You then travel in that direction until you reach your destination. The compass bearing never changes during your journey. Note that this may not be the shortest path to that location, only the one where you don't have to change compass bearing. Keep in mind, the coordinates themselves are a mathematical overlay on the globe. The Mercator projection is isomorphic relative to the globe for anything but the poles (due to the math, the latitude is stretched to infinity at the pole itself). This means that there is always a 1 to 1 translation of coordinates. For an easy example, let's do a similar mapping with two rulers: one in millimeters and one in inches. 1 millimeter is roughly 1/25th of an inch. If you are mapping, in the mathematical sense, a location in inches to its corresponding location in mm, there aren't more locations just because the millimeters are smaller and the inches are larger. There is a 1.5 location on both rulers. Everything gets smaller in mm and larger in inches but there is still a single 1.5 on each ruler. Go half way between 0 and 1.5 and there is a .75 location on both rulers. Your limits become physical (how small can I draw) and not mathematical (can I calculate this). Back to the Mercator projection , for any pair of non-pole latitude and longitude coordinates on the globe, there is exactly one location on the Mercator projection that corresponds to it. The reverse is true too: for any coordinates on the Mercator projection there is one corresponding location on the globe.

For most purposes though, that lack of perfection is not really of interest as the maps are nowhere near large enough or detailed enough to show the distortion. As to the question about straight lines changing on the globe, your question is not very specific but I can guess at your meaning. If you draw a shortest route line on a globe, it will be an arc segment; that is the equivalent of a straight line on a map. If you try to navigate this, you would find that the compass direction to your destination changes as you move along the arc. It would be difficult to navigate to using only a compass. Conversely, if you were to transfer the route from a Mercator projection back to the globe, the path would most likely be closer to a semi-spiral route and not a simple arc but, once you determined its compass bearing, you could go directly there by pointing yourself at that compass bearing and following it to the destination.
If the earth is flat, then the moon and sun must be flat too. Here's one for you. When our rockets, satillites, ships, leave earth's atmosphere, all the stars disappear. The view of earth from the moon, by the astronauts, shows no stars in space around earth. So, why do all stars disappear when we leave earth's atmosphere?

The stars don't disappear. Starlight is very faint and therefore is too weak to be picked up by a camera with a short exposure time. Have you ever tried photographing the stars yourself? Unless you use a long exposure time on a professional camera you won't see any stars in your photograph.
@@johnconlon8938 stars do disappear once you leave the atmosphere. There are 100s of nasa photos taken from space lab of blue earth, and there are never any stars around earth. It's pitch Black. Now nasa has photo shopped some pics, putting stars in, but 90 percent of 1000s of pics have no stars. It takes an atmosphere to see stats apparently.. ECT.

I've been aware of the distortion of the Mercator Projection since grade school. This is nothing new and nothing that anyone has been trying to hide.

It made me wonder why would they project to the majority of the world .that the world is a spinning ball of water (which is impossible).I also humbly feel that there's much more land not only within the Artic Wall but beyond it.
