That final shot is absolutely chilling. My sister can’t stand Donald Sutherland in any movie under any circumstances to this day as a result.
What about the dirty dozen? Pinkley doesn't seem too threatening?
MASH he is great
Why you gotta hit me whit them negative waves so early in the morning?
Not even "Ordinary People"??
😂😂😭😭
One of the best endings in the history of the genre. Well-made film, as well.
LOVE the ending !!
@@serenityinside1 yes, indeed. Oliver Harper described the style and affect perfectly. This movie was so well-directed.
The ending for me was when I saw that dog with the banjo music. I turned it off then lol
@@GisherJohn24 haha, fair enough
This version is still one of the scariest movies ever made
Agreed 👍
[SPOILERS]
The final moments are one of the most shocking endings I’ve ever seen.
The Thing and this movie both improved on the decent original versions and are still two of my most favorite sci-fi horror movies. I don’t really go for gore these days but these films are more about psychological scares but with very scary effects too!
@@seansankey3562 Agreed..."The Thing" and "The Fly" are two of the best remakes ever made.☝️👍
@@quinetastic totally agree
This movie really gives me an unsettling feeling throughout it, unlike most horror movies today.
Agreed,it’s an effective psychological horror film.
If this movie was made today you just know the pod people would all be white.
That's when you know, it's a quality horror film. It's easy to make someone nauseous, it's harder to make them feel true fear.
Pretty sure pod people took over Seattle.

Oliver Harper's Retrospective Reviews are a rare treat. And I'm a big fan of the Body Snatcher movies.
Why not do a review on "Night of the Living Dead" 1990 remake directed by Tom Savini?
It's insane how this dude doesn't have a million subs.
Yeah I agree
Couldn’t agree more. Excellent videos and Oliver is always pretty fair with his reviews even if he didn’t care for the film he’s reviewing.
Sutherland: Goldblum is acting strangely!
Everyone: And?
😅 Jeff Goldblums character in every film = Jeff Goldblum!
PS I could watch a whole movie of him just improvising.
Goldblum is pure gold in every film. He’s so unexpected in everything.
Hire him - quickly!
"How do you know my name? I didn't tell you my name!"- back then that terrified me, today of course they know your name and everything else about you
The moment when Matthew held Elizabeth only to hear her body crunch broke my heart.
Truly horrific moment!
I agree. It's the utter hopelessness of their fight, and the brief hope of hearing music (amazing grace) makes it all the more tragic
In a way that was even more traumatic than the twist ending. I’m sure at that moment Matthew already thought he was alone, we do know that Nancy survived longer, but Matthew didn’t know that. And to experience the woman he loved dissolve into ash in his arms and lose everything she was ever was is the scariest thing. True horror.
The man face dog gave me major trouser trauma as a youngster. Well scary.
The effects look so bad though if only the face looked like it belonged to the body it would be proper scary.
Elizabeth gave me trouser trauma if you know what i mean!!!!
Me too. I saw this when I was way too young and the dog freaked me out. I had no idea it was just a mask. It makes sense, but still incredibly creepy.
@@anubusx spit my drink out on that one, mate. Well executed
Yeah, I got turned on too. Wait.
“The director of Invasion was replaced.” Seems appropriate.
One of the best remakes, ever. It's in a small club of remakes that are better than the original.
Agreed! That remake of The Blob was pretty good too!
@@theimaginist3310 The Blob is a great example. I actually forgot about that one
@@theimaginist3310 So, we got The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Blob, The Fly, and (don't come at me) Dawn of the Dead. What else is missing?
@@PoeInTheDitch I would also add Tom Savini's remake of Night of The Living Dead. A admirable & relatively modern take.
@@lawrencerinehart5747 Yeah! Perfect. Love that one, too. On the list.
This is one of the very few remakes that I actually like.
The dog with human face is one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen.
Also a great example of tongue in cheek humor. 😂
I would totally put this with The Fly and The Thing as remakes (or re-adaptations) that edge out the original
Agreed. I'd add The Blob as well.
Absolutely.
I still have a soft spot for the originals as well 👍
Agreed on all counts. The OG films all have their charms as ‘50s B movies, but their remakes do up the game
Penny i agree + The Blob 1988
Poor Veronica Cartwright, they didn't tell her what would happen at the Alien breakfast scene either. This movie is amazing, yet for some reason hardly gets mentioned amongst the great horror classics.
Totally agree on the latter 👍
Her whole career must have given her therapist plenty to discuss.
This movie is still absolutely terrifying to this very day. An absolute masterpiece
THIS film is a MASTERPIECE. 🤘😜🤘
Definitely one of the best remakes. I just love how quiet and dark it is.
Make in such a way it made the unbelievable believable. A 70's cinema classic.
Watched the movie yesterday. Still a masterpiece in my opinion. Nothing like movies from the 70s/80s.
@@JeVoudrais12 "NOTHING like" implies that there is NOTHING LIKE the movies from the 70s and 80s. AKA nothing as good as the movies of that era. Mate are you daft?
Definitely still holds up today. Especially it's overwhelming feeling of dread. Scared the crap out of me as a kid.
I only watched this movie recently after spending 30 years of my life being an idiot and it became an instant classic. One of my favorite thrilling horror movies ever.
Thank you for covering it.
It was released in 1978,
so...40-something years?
The twist ending was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments.
Original film tho
Still my favorite horror movie. The fact that it scares the crap out of you without any jump scares is amazing and I just love the paranoia. Absolute masterpiece.
Veronica Cartwright was not given directions in Body Snatchers for the great reveal, and then again in Alien for the chest burster scene. Lol, anything else?
She always seems to draw the short straw!
So basically this movie and Alien are just very, very elaborated pranks on Veronica Cartwright...
God she's hot. I wouldn't give her direction either.
Nimoy is so great in this. Amazing cast.
Yes. And Veronica Cartwright had me fooled her acting was so good.
This is the best version of the movie. I go back to it every year or so and enjoy it every time.
Donald Sutherland is amazing and versatile actor from Sci-fi movies to period romance movies.
I agree he is an amazing actor.

"She is not my wife."
Would love to see him play The High Evolutionary.
He always gives a naturalistic, believable performance.
I’ve not seen a film handle paranoia as well as this film and The Thing.
I wonder if IBSnatchers was taken from the Who Goes There? Novel?
That image at 14:45 had actually been featured in an EARLIER (1971) movie titled The Mephisto Waltz. The beautiful Brook Addams had stared in another horror film from the same year titled Shock Waves.
Brooke Adams was in Shock Waves, not Maud.
@@robertodell9193 Thanks. I've rectified that error.
The 1955 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers is pretty good. The late Sam Peckinpah had a bit part in it. Don Siegel also directed Coogan's Bluff and Dirty Harry.
I like that we get Kevin McCarthy to cameo in the remake to imply his character from the original was still preaching “you’re next!” before he’s killed off
& "Escape From Alcatraz".
The end of this film is literally the scariest ending I have ever seen. Love it!
One of my personal favorite films. It's so tense and anxiety inducing from literally the first scene
That point and shriek lives in my head rent free.
This is the definitive version of this story.
There was an older, “Scream Factory,” collector’s edition release of the movie, back in 2016, but it’s now out of print.
I missed getting it and now it's a fortune 😠
@@dnasty312 really? I have it. Interesting.
Arrow Video made a killer set as well. I have the SF set but wouldn’t mind getting the Arrow also.
@@orwellianson I think the Arrow release is UK only
Kino just announced they’re doing a 4K release of it. I can only imagine how great that’ll look and sound.
I always saw it as a sorta sequel because of Kevin McCarthy trying to warn people.
Same here.
"It's a rat turd!!!"
Robert duvall as the priest swinging on the swings while watching the children always frightened me,and the scene were Donald Sutherland is sleeping in the garden while the pods hatch and the beings make infant sounds

They did that really well!
I find it so heartbreaking that he fought so hard... only to become one of those pods in the end.

@@PeterParker-yg6fc You're a total loony.
That dog / human face scene is to this day unbelievably uncomfortable - looks absolutely crazy.
Great video as always. Thank you
this movie's more apropos now than ever.
I was thinking the same thing throughout the video. The premise scared me as a child and the reality scares me, now.
Maybe thats why it genuinely creeps me out like few other movies.

The moment The Faculty is mentioned I thought "yeah, a retrospective on that would be interesting".
The Great Oliver harper has gave us another Goated Retrospective
My Mum kept reccomending me this movie as a teen, we finally watched it together one night.
It was truely unsettling, the dog face thing messed me up. My Mum was so pleased.
A well-made remake. The dog with the human face, and the ending still freak me out.
I need this in 4k, the cinematography is beautiful.
Such a great movie. It doesn't get the attention and coverage it deserves. Had it come out in the 80s I think it would get far more attention now.
Seeing a new Oliver Harper Retrospective is like getting an early Christmas gift.
Just watched it. Such an unsettling movie.
My favorite CZcams channel. I especially love when you do horror retrospectives.
This is one of those movies where the remake was better than the original, and I like that original film
The original was a good film, very solid.
One of the best remakes of a movie ever made, it had the most haunting use of Amazing Grace in a movie
I am so glad you are still making these videos, they are an absolute delight. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Iain!
It's one of those beautifully shot 70s films that are sadly missed today. Deliberate pacing, quiet moments, building of tension, background clues, and almost art-house framing and camera angles.
Really enjoy this film.
I recorded this on VHS as it was on late at night in the 90s. Unbelievably, the tape ran out a few seconds too early and I was left not knowing if Sutherland's character had changed or not for years.
Nice to see one of my all time favorite movies get the Oliver Harper treatment. The original is a classic but I always find myself coming back to this version.
Love this version and the ending freaked me out as a kid and still gives me goosebumps. Also never knew the cast didnt know the ending that makes it even better.
These retrospective reviews are first class, a real treat for us viewers 😍
78 and 93 really got their hooks in me when i was younger. Its pretty hard to track down usually but last time i checked 93 is on YT
One of my favorite sci fi movies, one of my favorite remakes. I always liked SF as a background city in many movies, it works perfectly in this film, It was its own character. What a great city, it once was.
Amazing film
I was lucky to see the original one first, because it just made me more anxious to watch this one after I had picked it up from a box of DVDs that were being donated from a friend of my mom. I loved the original, but this one was terrifying. Those synthesized pulses when Matt is walking around helplessly, while his phone calls are scoffed at, really leaves you feeling disturbed. Great video Oliver! I have been looking forward to it for some time.
What a strange coincidence - I just read up on this and watched the trailer + a bunch of clips on CZcams a couple days back
I just found it by accident on my parents DVD shelf and put it out to watch it. So I have had the same synchronicity this week also. *creepy*
It's the slow inevitability that makes this so scary.
I find it's pretty amazing how this movie interlinks with the black and white movie
This is one of only 3 films that have really creeped me out. It’s properly underrated
My review of this movie ,Its a masterclass and just historic movie I love the acting amazing cast. 10/10!!!!!!
I would also include The Puppet Masters (1994) as an attempted remake of sorts. Yes, I know its an adaption Robert Heinlein's 1951 novel, but with Donald Sutherland starring, it has more of a feel of "Snatchers" rather than the "Puppet Masters" novel, which ended up being a very loose adaption at best.
I agree; if you are going to mention The Faculty, then The Puppet Masters should be included.
"They're here already! You're next!"
Fantastic movie. By far the best version.
Great review 😎 the mood, the way it’s shot, the chemistry between the actors. Perfection
One of my Top Ten favorites.
I caught bits of the original sneaking up late when I was seven. I didn't sleep for days.
Saw this version in the theater when I was 13. My friends didn't like it, but I stayed for a second showing.
(And I can shake my eyes like Elizabeth!)
I love how re watching this you pick up so many small things you wouldn't notice when you watch it the first time
Please review The Faculty 😄
So happy to get a new retrospective/review! And for such a good scifi thriller. It occurs to me while watching this video: Donald Sutherland appears in two of the most memorable and spooky movie endings of the 1970's: Don't Look Now and this film.
My first experience with Invasion of the Body Snatchers was on television in the 1980's during my teens. And I was riveted. The growing sense of impending doom was palpable. And in the final scene, during that big reveal, my metaphorical heart sank rapidly to the floor like a broken elevator in a high rise. But I loved it, after the initial shock wore off ... some stories should end on a troubling note.
Thanks for reminding me about this gem. It really is a winner, from the whole look and vibe to the stellar cast to the effects.
One of my favourite movies! Was so excited to see that you had done a retrospective!! Superb as per usual!
I love this film. Thanks for the retrospective!
ahh Moviedrome good times. 🎦
Watched it last night. First time in years still terrifying.great review
I saw this when I was around 10. That ending gave me nightmares for at least a week. Definitely a classic.
Saw this on Videodrome too, with Alex Cox's brilliant intro. That's when the BBC was worth the license fee.
Oliver, please do the Living Dead Trilogy!
I want him to do The Omen trilogy.
@@anubusx
The first Omen was a horror masterpiece imho
The end music reminds me of streets of rage on the megadrive, i like that!
I watched this recently for the first time and loved it. It's a very unconventional horror film. I love how serious in tone it is. The ending is absolutely perfect.
I think that this movie, like Cronenberg's The Fly (another favorite!), has this perfect blend of disturbing horror and humanity that makes it feel authentic. It's got very casual humor in it (until things really start getting serious, and even then there is some tongue-in-cheek darker humor) and the characters are endearing and their reactions to what happens feel just so genuine that the film really entraps you without ever feeling overly funny or overly intense (again...like The Fly) and masterfully moving from one to the next. (I always say that a film like Infinity War is an example of how NOT to mix in levity with intensity, with jokes making the plot grind to a screeching halt and getting in the way of the film...but this film gets it just right)
The Faculty is tremendous fun 👍
Was that Alex Cox? Theres a bit of nostalgia. I remember him presenting so many weird films late at night on, I think, Channel 4.
Yes he did Moviedrome on BBC 2 on Sunday night from 1988 to 94 then Mark Coussins took over from 1997 to 2000. That's how I discovered this film on Moviedrome in 1993.
@1:35 so great to hear Leonard Nimoy, but still think Spock as he is talking ... rest his soul. You are remembered, sir.
I saw the 3rd version of the movie first, at the perfect age to identify with the characters. But, the second version utterly levels me, it's fantastic. I could watch it every week. Love the cast. ......and I'm utterly ashamed to have reached my mid 40s without ever seeing the original. I should turn in my movie buff badge.
I still watch this movie every year.
Watched it for the first time 20 years ago, superb film with an excellent cast
A remake done right by upping the creepiness of the original & capitalizing on the changes between the ‘50s and ‘70s. The Cold War themes are there, but you can feel a domestic fear in there too especially that downer ending when we see Matthew has become assimilated
One of the best remakes of all time with one of the all time greatest ending scene
My 2nd favorite horror movie, the best horror remake, and the most atmospheric horror movie.
Astonishing film.
Thank you for this retrospective, loved every minute of it.
This movie is so scary that I watch it only once every five years. It just creeps me out and is so depressing. The themes and special effects beat the hell out of anything from today. Also, I have to say that I have always felt like first three were something of a trilogy set in the same relative universe covering the invasion from separate view points. You have small town, big town, and the military, these define a great deal of life in America.
What happens when scientology gets hold of someone you love or know really well. They literally turn into a different person altogether. So we have a running joke around here that it's as creepy as the movie "invasion of the body snatchers".
I find it interesting that keeping it non political was a major concern for them. That says a lot actually.
Is THAT just scientology specifically or religion in general?
I would say this is what happen's when liberalism get's hold of someone and it's getting more terrifying everyday
This video was released a day before Kino announced the 4K edition of the film for the US market.
Ending films without music is so effective. I always think of Planet of the Apes, where all you hear is the ocean, while credits roll…
love your Retrospective video, great job with all of them
Philip Kauffman, director of two of the greatest films ever made; INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, and THE RIGHT STUFF.
I was walking through town this week and I felt like Elizabeth does in the early part of the film. It's the masks, people peering at me over the top of them, expressionless and unreadable. An odd feeling in the air of unease and uncertainty. I thought about how I miss seeing people's faces; such a simple thing. I felt like I was on another planet. I thought of this film, that I haven't seen in a long time, and then this video popped up as a suggestion a few days later (I wasn't a subscriber). Spooky!
Great Coverage , Well Presented Too! Especially the chosen clips, Thanks!
