The Thing (1982) Retrospective/Review
First half of the movie, but the second half is pretty bad.
I also prefer Revolution over Reloaded
to call it john carpenters the thing is a travesty , the script wasn't written by him , the music wasn't written by him , the amazing effects were not created by him , it should have been called john carpenter presents , the thing , don't get me wrong I love john carpenter , he is a massive influence on my music , but the movie seemed to hang on that "john carpenters" image , I mean he was cool but to put his name on the movie was a bit pretentious
absolute masterpiece
Tonally uneven and mean spirited are things I love to see in a movie.
The Iron Man trilogy often mirrors the RoboCop trilogy. It becomes more obvious the more I re-watch them.
Fun Fact: The JPN release of *"TRANSFORMERS:* *The Movie"* had Masako Katsuki (Michiru Kaiou/Sailor Neptune from the original *"Sailor Moon"* anime series and the 2nd & 3rd animated film) as the voice for Arcee, and Mizuho Suzuki (Darth Vader in the 1983, 1986, 1988 NTV - Nippon TV - edition of the *"STAR WARS"* Original Trilogy) as the voice for Unicron.
These are the sort of movies I'm collecting on 4k blu ray now. 80s fantasy and sci-fi. It's like time travel. 80s cinema can't beat it.
I've always held the ROBOCOP trilogy in parallel with the BEVERLY HILLS COP trilogy (albeit very soon to lose its trilogy status). A classic first film with a great central performance, with Detroit connections and starring Ronny Cox. The second films are more stylishly shot, and have some great moments, and stay faithful enough to the first film. Whereas the third films - both released within a week of each other (here in the UK - I went to see them both at the local Cannon cinema) in 1994 - and both messed up what made the first ones good, by, well...by being too early 90s, fudging the tone of the films, and put an end to both film series. And YET...as disappointing as both films are, I still find just enough to enjoy in both of them to stop me from completely writing them off....but only just.
The major fumble in this film - among quite a few others - is that we had bad Arnie in the first one, and good Arnie in the second. This one should have started with good Arnie, then committed to him going bad for the second half of the film. Instead they just have him beat up on a car for a little bit.
This is my favorite John Carpenter movie.
Why does he look like the Slenderman when he's falling out the window? 🤣Those arms are crazy long.
Ah, the science fiction eighties... This remember me Terrorvision.
Peter Weller's stunt man was also Michael Jackson's stunt man for the Dangerous Tour, when Michael would fly out of the stadium in a jetpack.
I've been listening to this commentary subconsciously while being drunk for almost two hours while doing other stuff. It felt pleasant and didn't get me nauseous so I give it thumbs up!
He was a good actor but to me and many people he's Superman.
I really like Donald Pleasance. i read he was a huge diva on set tho lol
Good old times when game based on movie didnt follow the movies script and the dev feel bad and apology even try to put effort to fix it Now most just dont care anymore
Nice commentary, Oliver! In regards to what you said about the change in composer, I think they chose a new score because the original Robocop was basically a Greek tragedy (with the hero's murder & resurrection), while Robocop 2 was basically a comic book movie, so the shift in tone suited a new music theme. Also interesting to note is the similarities between the end robot battle in this film and end fight in Iron Man - interesting contrast between stop motion and CGI.
the robots were in robocop 2 arcade game as well pity they didnt know that info
When will you do retrospectives on The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises?
I really don't like Beyond Thunderdome. I feel bad saying that
Road's Warrior is da best. All R Good doe!
This is one of those movies I always bring up when people discuss remakes. You're always on the wrong end of a losing battle when you set out to remake the likes of Ghostbusters or Robocop, because they're such beloved, high-regarded classics that still hold up to this day. But I think when it comes to movies like Explorers, there's a perfect opportunity because you have a great premise but also plenty of room for improvement. I'd also add Flight of the Navigator and Space Camp to films that fit this criteria. But unfortunately, the reality is that the primary motivation behind remakes is capitalising on brand recognition by using existing IP's that general audiences are already familiar with, and the sad fact is that barely anyone remembers Explorers.
I'm glad that they went went the subdued Conan vs. Thulsa Doom rather than a a big war. For one thing they already had the fantastic battle of the mounds. Thulsa Doom isn't a traditional villain, he wields his charm and charisma. In addition Thulsa Doom wasn't lying to Conan, his actions were what created Conan. So beautifully concluded.
@9:31 so whats is a good example of this done right🤔 ? im trying to learn yk more about movies.. please and thanks
My favourite childhood film. I first saw the teaser trailer for this on a video in '85. I then had to wait the interminable TWO YEARS for this get released on video in the UK. Postponed for cinema release because of its failure in the US, and then getting a blink and you'll miss it theatrical release, then yonks later coming out on video. I would pester my local video store almost weekly about it. Eventually they gave me the Storybook which they'd been given as promotional material for it. Imagine my shock finally seeing the film only to find several key scenes pictured in the Storybook were not in the movie! I dreamed for years of being able to see those scenes, literally _praying_ for a deluxe DVD (before Blu-Ray) and now they're available for anyone and everyone to see. There are more than the ones on the Shout Blu, as the scenes on there come from a second edit of the film. FYI, the Shout Blu has an incorrect Aspect Ratio (very slightly squished) because of the Paramount master. _"Stuff that dreams are made of."_ - This refers to Wolfgang's dream at the start where he tells Ben he was dreaming he was at school naked. Wak played a joke on them, and in the deleted scene the bully's clothes evaporate - which was meant to be an accident. EDIT: I was also very disappointed in the aliens / ending as a kid. But the first two thirds were pure magic, so I forgave the rest...
101:39 Frank Miller was a chronic alcoholic for a few decades- and it aged him very quickly
I had Batman Returns for the SNES and the Lynx. The former was awesome. The latter, not so much.
I couldn't stand Shades.
Can we please get past the criticism that Hob’s character is in the movie to appeal to kids? That is not the case at all here. No kid is gonna cheer at the sight of him strangling Lewis or even worse when he cuts out Murphy’s guts and shows them to his face. His character is there to further represent how fucked up this environment is and how it can affect someone his age. The reason we flashback to Murphy’s son is to iterate that if RoboCop doesn’t stop this Nuke cult, his son could end up like Hob.
I am very sorry for asking this but could you do a video on all dogs go to heaven?
Dumb movie and crappy story
Weird...I had the Game Boy version and I can remember that the GB Version was not very good reviewed as shown here. The best was 49% back then.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the nod to Mad Max. At one point in the film, a guy that looks like Mel Gibson, from the back, was up on a hill with binoculars checking out the action
I felt the exact same way leaving the theatre. technically its a good movie but nothing dazzled me. The motorcycle chariots were kinda cool I guess
The music always struck me as definitively Gilliam
Sometimes it looks like a living organisms sometimes biblical and others scientific and surely others Hollywood 🎬 special or a mind tired running rampet im not sad i had a relationship life thry even come to find me building for children as well as for myself apart and sometimes together
I was 14 when this came out, I loved it!
I love this channel. I listen to these when I'm going to sleep. one day I will actually watch the movie with the commentary 😋

Happy 35th anniversary to Batman 1989 This Is My Favorite Batman
I saw it at the theater the first weekend it was released. Great movie!!!🤘
He didn't like the role in running man because its an action sci-fi movie. Thats why he gave it to Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Always happy when Oliver and Rob get together for some sweet Murder She Wrote discussions.
The top of the skull missing and the brain smash at the end 🤢🤣 Guilty pleasure of mine this movie although I dislike the score. The choir but when they sing “Robocop” - just cringey 🤣
The more I watch this film the less I like it. I always thought the movie was inferior to the original, but the bits that I did like now don’t seem nearly as good.
Love your reviews, I am guessing we are about the same age, this was the first Superman movie I saw and fell in love with it around 1988 I was in South Africa so, we had the Eurpean release, Superman 3 was on television i saw your review of that and fully agree for nolstalgia I loved that movie, i was a small kid so I just enjoyed seeing Superman, I saw the 1st movie on tele in 1991 and it was great. Finally in 1999 I saw Superman 2 and was somewhat disappointed but I was older and Michael Keatons Batman and Blade were rocking the comic books by then. Thanks for the great work Christopher Reeve will always be Superman
Your always in 2 minds about everything
