    As a GB fan, AND a masochist, I've watched hours of Frozen Empire reviews and analysis and this chat, by far, is the most astute take. Especially the Aykroyd stuff. My personal view is that the genius of Ghostbusters was that it was 'National Lampoon vs Ghosts'. Giving it the Marvel treatment loses sight of what made it unique. Like making a Trading Places cartoon. Hard truth is; it looked like a franchise starter but was, in fact, something far more special.

      my argument was that the film builds this town up as a middle of nowhere dead end town that's dying... but has a nearby Walmart, which seems like a bit of a tough sell - maybe even more so to international audiences.

    In Afterlife, Ray answers Phoebe's phone call from "Ray's Occult"! What do you mean Afterlife doesn't reference GB2?

    • @youreviltwinLP
      @youreviltwinLP Před 2 měsíci +2

      Yes but it was the ONLY acknowledgement of GB2 in Afterlife. (Other than the toaster in Egon's house, and that could be an ordinary toaster.)
      When Paul Rudd is explaining about Ghostbusters, we see CZcams videos of the finale of GB1, and we see their original GB1 TV commercial. The thumbnails for other videos are also GB1 related.
      It's inconceivable that none of the kids have heard of "that time the statue of liberty came to life and walked through the streets of New York on new year's eve" /, that Paul Rudd didn't mention it, or that there isn't at least a youtube thumbnail of it.
      Plus you have the weirdness that the car being Ecto 1 rather than 1a. Most people assumed that they upgraded the same car to turn it into 1a, not that they went and bought another old rusty 1950s Cadillac Hearse and fixed it up as well and gave it most of the same features plus extra gadgets. (And if it was a second car, does that mean the 1a is sitting somewhere, unused, somewhere in New York?)
      Anyway, the result was it gave the impression that they went out of business after GB1 (just like in GB2), and Ray opened a book store and has been running it ever since.
      The obvious reason is that GB2 is not beloved like GB1, so they decided to put in loads of nostalgic references to GB1 and sweep GB2 under the rug. "Ignore that rubbish sequel, pretend it never happened, you don't need to watch it before watching this film, this is a sequel to GB1."
      So that's why it was refreshing to actually see a TV news report showing footage of the statue of liberty walking, and acknowledging that the theme song exists in this universe too (since Ray and Winston played it at the birthday party in GB2).

    • @mburkit
      @mburkit Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@youreviltwinLP I repeat: Ray is sitting in Ray's Occult Book Store from GB2. Ghostbusters 2 has happened and this is an acknowledgement of it in Afterlife. The Ecto is also in a different configuration than it's been in either GB1 or GB2. Turns out they change around the equipment and logos every few years, like most businesses do with their fleet vehicles.
      Don't confuse poor maintenance of continuity for avoidance of something. Both Afterlife and Frozen Empire have horrible continuity errors within their respective films and between themselves.

    Ghostbusters: 3 Angry Men
    Would be interested in watching a sequel that stars only Ray, Winston & Peter which seems them unknowingly paranormally trapped in the Firehouse. Playing out more as straight horror film the guys think they are spending the night playing cards & chatting the old days but spooky goings on start to slow happening? Ecto 1 vanishes, objects move, walking out the door only sees them reappear randomly in another room of the building etc. Basically something has triggered the containment unit to engulf the firehouse meaning that the whole building now resides within it allowing ghost free reign to enter the building. While looking out windows/doors the guys only see blackness, to outsiders all looks as normal. Throughout their time trapped viewers learn of the guys life’s, family etc since 1989 and see them work together one final time as they rig up temporary new gadgets a solve the mystery they have found themselves in. After an exhausting night busting and restoring the firehouse, they finally walkout the front doors into the street to learn that only 2 hours have passed - the exact runtime of the film. Film would be mainly practical effects, Classic soundtrack & modest budget & a loosely “12 Angry Men” setup.

    Phoebe is the typical "child that talks like an adult, even more than the actual adults around them" type character. The LGBT element feels a bit half-pregnant (in that it tries to not offend anyone, so invariably will end up pleasing no one)
    Why was Finn even there? It feels very much he got to pay homage to the "he slimed me" from 1984, in the trailer and not much else.
    Nanjiani feels like a character/performer that constantly holds a mirror up to the absurdity of the general premise.
    It's certainly a movie I enjoyed while actually watching it, but reality hits the more you think about it.
    I enjoyed this analysis/review.

    As a lifelong fan who holds the first two films in high regard, I’m not sure what to think of Frozen Empire. I was expecting New York to be frozen much sooner in the film which the trailer alluded to. I did find it surprising that they shot it in London though I do recall they were filming around the Canada Water area too, I remember Jason Reitman was doing a screening of the work of Ghostbusters 1 last year and saying that he was going to show the Frozen Empire workprint the day after to the studios. I’m curious to know how much was cut out.

      Me too. I was expecting New York to become frozen at the end of the first act, (around the 25 minute mark) and for the Ghostbusters to be sent on a frosty adventure around New York, battling against the elements while trapping ghosts and melting ice with proton beams. That's not what happened at all.

    I like how Vigo is built up in GB2. Shown early, his power grows all the way through. The Ghostbusters don't really know how much of a threat he is until enough time passes. While they're busting and keeping busy. As Dana continues to experiences weird things in the museum. Then go in get readings and do their homework on him. And things continue to get worse. Great bad guy, nice build up. I have mixed feelings on Frozen Empire. Definitely going to watch it again on 4K when it comes out! Hopefully my issues with will go away after I see some of the deleted scenes Gil said was going in the special features.

    I just saw this last night! Perfect timing since it's still fresh in my mind. I agree that the writing/direction doesn't need to go so hard on the nostalgia and maybe there should be "blink and you'll miss it" scenes for that instead of a big stop during what is going on. For instance the library scenes where they get stopped by the original actor from the first film stating they aren't allowed in the library anymore vs Ray stopping in a chase to point out the ghost to us. I feel like the first scene is better with that guy and it doesn't really seem forced. But for the library ghost it would have been better if they just would have had Ray stop just past the book shelf from a moment have a shiver and continue on with the chase while only we the audience can see that the Library Ghost is still there and since Ray had a close experience with it he still can feel it somehow (i wrote this like 20 minutes before your suggestion but we are on the same page, lol). I think with these movies they can move on to more subtle call backs rather than the forced nostalgia when it slows down the pace of the movie. I am totally wearing nostalgia glasses for the Real Ghostbusters Series with these new Ghostbusters movies and would like to see some call backs or integration of those ideas. My gamble with the next Ghostbusters movie would be to ask (beg) J. Michael Straczynski to help with the writing since his episodes in the animation series were my favorites: "Knock, Knock", "Ragnarok and Roll", "Citizen Ghost", and "When Halloween was Forever." Perhaps with that gamble have a longer 2 or 3 movie arc. Jumping off from this movie they can have Paul's idea of an opposite group competing with The Real Ghostbusters (at the firehouse) of a new Ghost Smashers group that turns out to be evil. Like some of the Ghost Smashers know and some don't that their leader is catching ghosts for a nefarious plot.
    Imagine a Big Bad in the first movie that both groups have to come together to defeat and begrudgingly the Ghostbusters allow the Ghost Smasher to keep it "trapped." But, they are keeping it for its PKE and at the end they could have a "one down two to go" sort of ending. Since this last movie delved into the mystical traps maybe the Ghost Smasher got the pieces of the orb (from Nadeem that got it back to put in the his Gran's room) and learned to create more and have a collection of brass traps that copy the Fire Masters' sort of mystical angle recruiting (exploiting) Nadeem for money. The Smashers could even be the remnants of the adventurers society from the opening scene and actually had other trapped powerful ghosts hidden in NYC that they are searching for. So you have two groups: The Ghostbusters (science based) and the Ghost Smashers (mystical based) that are at odds with each other. Part two could be suspicion and the unfolding of what the ultimate Smashers' plan is and the third movie could be a sort of apocalypse final battle.
    I liked this movie and really would like more movies in this universe. I hope we get more. I think the "new paint" can be a trilogy too. But for sure writing, writing, writing, is where they need to improve for this franchise. They got pretty much everything else on point. Also, i loved The Real Ghostbuster OST bits and the beginning and end of this, thanks!

    Interesting chat lads, I'm always going to be curious on Gannon's take on any new Ghostbusters media. I enjoyed the film a lot myself, whilst also accepting that it wasn't doing anything revolutionary. I just found out the other day that Ernie Hudson's 78 year's old - I thought the dude was in his 60's! I disagree to an extent though about the film not really containing any sense of horror, I think there were some genuine creepy bits in it, like the room full of frozen dead guys at the start and the bit where all the power goes out in the second site and all the containment fields fail Acaster and whoever was with him (can't recall now) are waiting nervously for the backup generator to kick in. I'm hoping they do a 3rd (6th..?) film.

  • @Retrobution
    @Retrobution Před 2 měsíci +1

    The problem with this imo (aside from it being ball and chained by Sony) is that it is a movie and not a series (as you mention). I think the franchise is doomed if it is limited by the runtime that a movie is limited to, it's very difficult to set the stage and introduce new characters all within 2 hours.
    If this was, for example, a series like stranger things - 8 or 9 episodes, this is enough time to explore all of the themes and characters and have the finale feel rewarding.
    I liked all of the new things they introduced in this film, even the phoebe/melody stuff to a point. It was just so out of place when you had a pace to keep to and trying to fit all of this in basically left me wanting MORE of what they had presented in this film and there wasn't enough of the things they had done right.
    I do think though for frozen empire they should have ditched the melody/phoebe storyline and had them capture slimer and experiment on slimer instead - to make it more like the cartoon and better for kids to watch and they should have stuck to the gramophone as the device that garraka would be released by, because that gramophone was creepy!
    Perhaps have podcast record it, and so the attention would be on rescuing him, and his recording gets broadcast on the radio or something by that possessor thing and then the whole city would hear it and witness new york freezing over, everyone frozen into place (and eventually they would defrost at the end unrealistically of course).
    It would then set the stage for new york to be completely frozen over, even the OG team frozen leaving the new team in a frozen new york having to wear those red jackets for warmth and to try and stealth around new york taking out ghosts and having the end battle at the firehouse as they did.
    Having this would have set the stage for perhaps a videogame in the frozen empire, lets say its frozen for a week in the story, the frozen logo is very cool (excuse the pun), new figures with frozen variants and so on.
    But with the story done and dusted just like that, what people come away from the theatre feeling about it is nothing of note simply because each theme is rushed through.

    I enjoyed the movie. I enjoyed Afterlife as a movie but it also holds a special place in my heart because it was one of the last movies I showed my Mom on blu-ray before she passed away in May of 2022. So I went into Frozen Empire excited to see the new cast and the old cast. I was also excited to see James Acaster because I'm a fan.
    I think I liked Afterlife a little better, but that's not to say Frozen Empire isn't good. I had fun with it even though I agree with some of the criticisms.
    We really didn't need Patton Oswalt in this at all. His scenes could been handled by Ray in his store. I was terrified they were gonna make him a Ghostbuster. He doesn't need to be in every major property. It never feels organic and I always see Patton Oswalt and never the character he supposed to be.
    I'm not the biggest Kumail Nanjiani fan in the world, but I gotta say I didn't hate him in this. I also thought they were gonna make him a Ghostbuster but thankfully that didnt happen.
    Oddly enough, you know the biggest thing I'm having issues with? Why are people complaining about the fire pole situation. Phoebe cuts a pole to make gear at the end. People are saying it's a plot hole but do they not know the firehouse has more than one pole? You can see it in the original.

    It's really not that confusing, Afterlife was well made at the end of the day as a film whether you think it's a Ghostbusters movie or not, whereas Frozen Empire doesn't even function as a good movie by any standard. The thing that confuses me is how a room of people being paid $100K+ year as their sole job as curators of Ghostbusters sat around, pitched the idea of them chasing a garbage bag around the library and thought "Greenlight this! Holy crap! This has to be in the movie, this is what fans have been waiting for!"
    You could have grabbed any Ghostbuster comic book off the shelf and pulled inspiration from that and had better luck. Growing up, I always saw Ghostbusters having a structure that always led to a few set pieces of the Ghostbusters doing their thing. The fact they couldn't create a single "Scoleri Bros." type sequence in the entire runtime is baffling, it's a pretty low bar.

      @@SniffHeinkel i mean, that absolutely didn't happen (eg - August 2020, the Indian film Sadak 2's trailer became the most disliked movie trailer on CZcams. In the first two days after its release, the trailer received 5.3 million dislikes and currently has over 12 million dislikes) and the team didn't go on late night to insult fans - it was rather all a load of fuss by people who should have better things to do than read inaccurate facts and opinions into their own reasons why they didn't like something. the bottom line is that for "certain people" the GB2016 is an easy punchline to their exaggerated own greivences because an IP lead movie is more important to them then actually engaging with the real discourse that doesnt exist on YT comments or Social media. So you need to calm down, stop talking in exaggerated terms, nothing is absolute and no one needs to shit the bed over a comedy film for kids that grown adults seem to like to cry over.

    If your cohost had revealed he liked the 2016 so much sooner I would have bailed then. If you defend that film in any way, you are gaslighting and you hate the Ghostbusters IP. I'm done listening to s-heads who claim they love the first one but also love the utter contempt 2016 showed towards fans and the franchise itself. You like it for being obnoxious like an anti-social teenager which is a very permanent, stunted teenager thing to do. The real "toxic" fans are the head-gamers trying to convince you that movie has any value other than gaslighting fans.

    It's just a complete mess. The only bright spots for me were the Patton Oswalt scene and Kumail Nanjiani, but they only reminded me that the new main characters in these sequels are *awful* and painfully dull. As another critic rightly pointed out: these new characters don't have any *motivation* to actually BE Ghostbusters. The original film was about three scientists who were kicked out of their academic jobs and needed to earn a living. You could identify with the entire premise, even if the central conceit was outlandish - it's what made the jokes and the whole thing work. It's what made the *comedy* work. These new characters *have no reason* to want to be Ghostbusters besides some extremely vague idea about "carrying on Egon's legacy", which doesn't even WORK, because the *actual Ghostbusters* have even moved on with their lives. The entire "motivation" for these new characters being Ghostbusters is just that it's "cool" - which isn't an *in-film* motivation, but one EXTERNALLY put on them by the fanbase of the movies, themselves, which is a nauseatingly unintentional meta-aspect to the entire thing. I could speak forever about specific flaws in the film, but that, to me, is the main problem: it *doesn't make any sense* that these people would be Ghostbusters. The MOTHER? What is she doing there? And why are they even in New York, apart from the need for the film to have the original's iconography? It's all externally imposed by this weird, meta idea that the writers know that the audience is familiar with these things, so the characters have to be doing them, but with no *character* reason for them to be doing them. So it ends up feeling like you're watching an infomercial for popcorn buckets with references to an original film that just keeps reminding you that THAT one was great. There's just no reason for these new movies to exist.

    Didn't like Frozen Empire for many reasons most importantly the franchise has no direction whatsoever and can we ditch the kids they don't belong as the main ghostbusters crew. Especially when there's no growth for each character from one movie to the next. Bring back an all male ghostbusters cast using Dan Aykroyd's original script and of course don't need the ancient Hittite god Gozer anymore moving forward. Also their car Ecto -1 was suppose to be black not white, how cool is that.

    I agree with you Gannon; AFTERLIFE did not feel like a true Ghostbusters film. Instead? It is a “Reitman” highlighted pretentious farce almost with an imagined heirloom sense of perfunctory entitlement. It’s a not a well regarded IP because of “Reitman” and the name being present. it’s the actual characters; it is the world Akroyd envisioned. not a “Reitman” centric endeavor. AFTERLIFE I thought a fitting title bc it is essentially in my mind signaling it; the LAST of the ghostbusters films really; unfortunately. despite how clumsy it was ultimately found to be.

    As a fan it pains me to say this but I have to be honest; Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is a bad movie. The film is a mess. It's boring, poorly paced, confusing, convoluted and overly complicated. Too many characters, many of which have been needlessly shoehorned into the story. It's overstuffed with unnecessary dialogue, subplots, characters and scenes which go on for far too long. It's not funny either. I didn't laugh once during the movie, and neither did the audience I was watching it with. Neither is it scary. Laughs and scares are the two things you expect from a Ghostbusters film but this film doesn't provide any.
    Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan may be talented directors, but they're the wrong people to be writing these films.
    With a heavy heart, I rate this film 3 out of 10.
    I feel a lot of fans are in denial about just how bad this film is.

Why are all the creepy old men on the internet so keen to see lesbianism, whenever two teenage girls get within 5 feet of each other? I think it says more about the type of porn y'all are watching, than anything else.
