  • *******Around the 12:40 mark of this video Kristen gives advice about handling/cornering on a trike. What she meant to say is that if you lean too soon for turns it could result in lifting up the opposite wheel of the direction you're leaning. When she said "you should lean the opposite direction of where you're turning," what she meant was that it's better to keep your hips centered and lean into the turn with just your chest (which is a little different from what you'd do on a bike.) For more information on handling an electric trike, you can check out the following video: • How to Turn a Tricycle... *************************************************************************************************

    Electric trikes are great for many reasons: comfort, stability, ease of use just to name a few reasons. But like with any electric bike or trike, having good engineering and making sure the selected components perform well together is key. That's what Evelo aimed for with the Compass, and they largely achieved just that!
    The Evelo Compass is a 20” e-trike that combines a smooth ride with extra cargo capacity. Evelo’s expertise in electric bikes shows through on the Compass. Riders looking for a trike that is zippy, fun, and stable, the Compass is a great option to consider.
    With plenty of storage room and power, the Compass performs well climbing hills, and can haul around plenty of cargo. The Compass e-trike is surprisingly smooth compared to some of its competitors. Overall, this is a well engineered e-trike with nimble handling and lots of power.

      Same here in the UK, 9 weeks since my injury & maybe another 7 or 8 weeks of limited mobility, + 12 months of recuperation. I'm looking for a fat wheel trike or quad suitable for on & off road use in the UK & France. Checking out the wide range of wonderful new designs helps pass my time. Great review here.

    Very nice review. One correction I would make is that the two chains do not actually power both rear wheels independently. The chain from the pedal crank runs to the Shimano 3-speed hub transmission, and the second chain from the transmission to the rear axle, which through the differential powers both rear wheels. One major advantage of this setup, and one reason I purchased a Compass, is that the mid-drive motor's power is transferred through the transmission, meaning the motor can take direct advantage of all three speeds. This is much more efficient than front hub-mounted motors, which only spin the front wheel and are isolated from the rear deraileur gearing system.

    • @muckle8

      On a heavy, slower moving trike (shouldn't go faster than 15mph, vs bikes that go much faster), is that really utilized compared to a torquey hub motor? Hubs easily reach 65nm, even more, seems like a simpler setup that is adequate for trikes

    If I could afford a bike like this, I'd get one immediately - I'd never have to be worried about being carless or homeless again. Its frame could easily hold an attachable canopy that a solar panel could be attached to, a solar power station could be mounted on the frame, and cargo could fit easily within that basket, in fact, it's probably strong enough to tow a bicycle camper :) I'm praying for something just like this.

    My wife and I have owned two electric trikes for over a year now and would never go back to two wheels. They are so much more 'fun' and practical at the same time. We use them for shopping , beach with all our 'stuff' and also load them in the van and go on picnics everywhere. We use them locally like a car but without the hassle of parking. On wet or very cold days we use our van or ice car which we will always keep. They aren't just for old people . Teenagers have expressed a liking for them because they can use them freedom like a vehicle.

    My son is 18 with autism. He needs to gain independence as well as exercise. I need the trike for balance, stability. He loves to get out and I'm looking for an electric assist so he won't get as discouraged. I'm shopping. Not that many choices and I am trying to factor in a lot with controls and ease of use. I am in Seattle and have good trail systems so I think that with the right equipment he will gain a bunch of independence. Thanks for making a trike, it is a specific market but much needed.

    I have had a Red Aventon Adventure electric bike for a while now and love it, but only have about half dozen miles on it. It’s one of the nicest electric bikes on the market under $2,000. However, because of my changing health conditions I now require a Trike. So, I’m in the process of selling the Adventure and looking for the best Trike available.
    I have done some extensive research on all the trikes and feel that the Evelo Compass is what I want. The only thing I wish it had is a 750w motor, hydraulic brakes and turn signals. I have a steep hill near my house, and I was able to make it up the hill on my Segway X-2 very easily, but not my bike. The other thing I wish it had is a Red color, the same as my Adventure.

    • @jsaintclair1
      @jsaintclair1 Před 2 lety

      What you're asking would require the installation of a super computer on your trike! After a few rides with a 100% charged battery you'll know how far you can go. Watch out though: The care and proper feeding of your battery is very important if you don't want to blow through one 800 dollar battery a year.
      First: charge your battery up to 100% just before a ride; if you're not going to ride, charge it to only 80%.
      Second: don't let your battery discharge below 30% or maybe 20% at the most. And charge it back up to 80% as soon as you get home.
      Third: if you're not going to ride for a while, leave the battery charge at 50%.

    As a Compass owner, I find a big problem with the so-called "parking brake" feature on the front and rear brake levers: in a word, you have to choose whether you want to use the lever (front or rear) as a parking brake or as a normal brake. Why? In order to engage the thingy to block the brake, you have to pull like crazy on the lever, which will quickly damage the entire cable system between the lever and the brake caliper.
    Choosing to use the front brake as my "parking brake", I had to give extra slack to the brake cable, just enough to engage the caliper firmly against the rotor and to comfortably block the lever with the plastic thingy. This hack doesn't leave much leverage for normal front wheel braking. I solved the problem by filing the thingy back enough for it to engage later in the lever's pull cycle. And I chose to do this for rear brake.
    One other criticism: The wiring from the headlight is way too short, as seen by the way the headlight on the demonstrator's trike is pointing upward. That's because the wiring pulls the headlight upward every time the front wheel is turned to the right. The only solution is to disconnect the wire to the headlight (easy to do) during the daytime.
    The tail light is only useful at night. There are nice, bright "daytime" flashing red lights for bicycles that protect you much better during the day.

    3 speed hub YES YES YES. TOTALLY WEATHER RESISTANT, easy to adjust and in my hard riding youth I believe I adjusted it twice? ( The guy that made the first derailleur bike has a special place in hell) and any bike shop could swap it for a 7 speed. But really guys it's not a race bike.
    Hm........ why does no one talk about rain resistance?
    It's just a matter of time till you get caught out.
    Thank you for sharing your opinion on any of this.

    For $4,300 it should come with brake lights on each rear fender, plus front & back turn signal lights. And a larger and brighter headlight.

    The leaning is like driving a snowmobile, lean opposite

    • @jsaintclair1
      @jsaintclair1 Před 2 lety

      I don't know about snowmobiles (not much snow in Southern California) but on my Compass I definitely DON't lean opposite on a turn, something I learned very quickly. Of course common sense and laws of motion tell you to lean into the turn, otherwise you're going to tip over, especially on a trike. In addition, most residential streets in my town are slightly convex, and riding near the gutter on a trike definitely does not feel horizontal. I find myself constantly leaning toward the middle of the road.
