In our review of the Rad Power Bikes RadTrike we cover what could be a game-changing new model in Rad’s lineup.
Why is it such a big deal? There are tons of options on the e-bike market, but fewer on the e-trike market. Trikes are highly sought after by those with balance and mobility issues in particular. Sometimes the balance required of two feels excluded other from cycling who would otherwise join the fold.
So for Rad Power Bikes, one of the nation’s leading e-bike makers, to introduce an affordable trike model could further open up the floodgates in e-micromobility.
To better learn what the RadTrike is capable of, our review put it through our standard battery of tests. We examined everything from its battery range, braking ability, hill climbing, and more.
The RadTrike features a 750W front hub motor - that’s plenty of power for sure, but Rad put an emphasis on safety. While it’s the same wattage as found on the RadRover, Rad went ahead and capped the speed at 14 mph, while setting the trike up for success by enabling higher motor torque at lower speeds.
The 480Wh battery may seem small on paper, but it’s efficiently paired with the battery. Make sure to check out the range test for more details!
And of course, a trike isn’t overly useful if you can’t ingrain it into your daily life, and Rad made conscious decisions in the design process to ensure the trike could easily go in and out of a home, or even an SUV or van!
There’s a lot to unpack here, so make sure to watch our full video review of the RadTrike!

E-Bike Question of the Day ⚡🚴 How important is the stability of three wheels vs two wheels to you? Let us know in the comments below 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼

      @karlInSanDiego Před rokem +2

Three wheels can be a great benefit for utility cycling with a full load of cargo.
I ride a recumbent tadpole trike, and clipless pedals or another type of foot retention is critical to avoid running over your own leg (affectionately known in trike circles as "leg suck"). But with clipless on my trike, I never remove my feet from the pedals until I reach my destination, staying clipped at stop signs and traffic lights. I can even stop for a snack on a long ride, or to take a breath on a long hill, without unclipping.

for myyself,,,its absolutely imperative to have that stability!!
Due to illness and disability, I cant tell you how important that stability truly is!!
Im desperate to get out and about,,,and get as much excersize as Im able to, as well as the freedom that an E-bike/Trike would give me!!
I was really lucky to buy a Good 2nd hand E-bike, that had hardly been used,, the owner loved E-bikes,,but realized that he needed a much larger,,more powerful one,,,due to his size..
However, although I did get freedom and a bit of exersize,,,I quickly realized that I need Three wheels, ie; an E-Trike!!
I cant face using a Mobility Scooter,,,because, sadly, Ive noticed some of the Negative changes in the way Im treated,,,
having been an athletic, healthy person,,, then becoming a wheelchair user, thus mobility scooters compound that!!
~ so the E-bike was Awesome,,,because it changed me into "Just another Cyclist"!!
Unfortunately though, my joy was short-lived, as,,,, its become painfully an issue,,that ,I need Three wheels rather than Two!!
(Time for me to start saving up!! )
Thank you so very much, for showing us, that there are solutions out there!!

I ordered a RadTiike asap. Cannot wait! It is a great design, low CG. Easy to store and move. Steel frame is best. I don't want bigger tires or faster speeds Ideal for old or handicapped. I am both. I owned and rode at least 200, 2 and 3 wheel. Including 2 sidecar rigs and pulling trailers. Wear a skateboard helmet, boots and gloves. I own 2 Rads already. I own a Sportster and 10 bicycles for visitors.

I wish it had old-fashioned "Swept Back" handlebars because they allow the arms and hands to relax comfortably. I HATE the straight handlebars because they keep your arms and hands in a stiff, extended, tiring position.

Def a sweet trike. However, my money went to the 'Lectric Trike' due to price/value, better quality components, excellent design & weight, and rear/mid-drive power with a differential like your car - while still maintaining a super-low center of gravity that literally turns on a dime. They both top out at about 14mph - but the Lectric rear-wheel drive does not spin out like front-wheel drive trikes.

I love love love their use of a good old fashioned coaster brake. Don't find that on any others. Cool design of the seat post leaning it back to shift weight to the rear, unusual in that the drive wheel is on the front. ? A good mechanical front disc brake sure beats the dual hydraulic disc brakes on the Lectric. And who need the complication of a differential like cars use when you can just have one of the two rear wheels just freewheels. You'd think more cars would use that feature. And you get all this for only a couple hundred bucks more than the Lectric, and I appreciate Rad lowering the initial price so much ! I'd love to know if the initial customers got a bit of a rebate when they cut the price by over a grand.

If you want a 3 wheel with real performance check out the Outrider Alpha. The Rad trike is designed for retirement villages, too slow for public roads.

  • @karlInSanDiego

I feel like all the Rad Trike reviewers have never riden recumbent e-trikes. Most ICE trikes fold, and their drivetrain is much better. The Rad is cheaper and easier to mount/dismount. But that's where it stops being a comparitively compelling e-trike. Catrike also has made better e-trikes for years. Gotta look beyond the DTC market.

I spent a few months disassembling a fence and building a rolling gate, then another few months adding, reinforcing the gate…it’s now a fence again with the help of a couple of four by fours.
Thankfully my additional parking project went much better! It was supposed to be pavers $$$, but I settled for gravel in the end.
Still took months, but hey that’s life, things happen. I’m happy and that’s all that matters to me.

Of the 4 ebikes I have owned, the RadTrike is by far the most disappointing. I discovered a design flaw during my first ride. The clearance between the pedals and the frame is insuffient. In order to pedal without having the heal of my shoe contnually catching on the back frame, it is necessary that I peddle using my instep opposed to the ball of my foot. A significanf flaw in a bike lauded for being designed from the "ground up". I discovered the second flaw after a week of riding. The back chain sprocket assembly has a sprocket that, instead of being part of the bar attaching it to the bike, is a seperate, moveable part using a simple hex bolt to keep it in place using friction between the bolt and the bar. An absurd design given the bar is subject to continual vibration that loosens the bolt making it necessary to tighten it repeatedly to prevent the chain from coming off. A purchase I deeply regret.

Sorry to hear you've had troubles with it.
Just curious, what's your shoe size? We only had the occasional heel clip issue with mostly our size 12 riders.
As for the sprocket issue, we didn't notice that, but we'll take a look into it.

Rad need to make a bigger battery that battery is a joke all that money they want for that trike. They need to make a bigger battery. The baskets should be free. You’re not really getting nothing for your money worth that’s why people is going with electric trike.👎🏿👎🏿
