  • The deep ocean begins where the sunlight ends. It is dark, cold, and inhospitable to humans, yet essential to all life on Earth. The Ocean is our planet’s life support system - regulating the climate, feeding millions, and supplying half of the oxygen that makes this planet habitable. Experience the wonder of a blue planet! Today is World Oceans Day, and we’re thrilled to explore the unknown and awaken new depths guided by ROV pilot Tyler Smith.

Made me emotional, not going to lie! Seeing so many shots that I got to watch in real time with hundreds of other people around the globe. It's a special sort of feeling. Thank you for all that you do, SOI!

It’s been a privilege for us too - that you let us be a remote part of your discovering via the livestreams is a gift.

Your live streams are hands down the most unique content I have seen.
    Thanks for the adventure!

this is one of the best overviews i've seen of deep sea ROV exploration. fantastic job to everyone who had a hand in this!
i love the immediate framing of the deep sea as NOT alien - it's just a different environment than the one we inhabit, and the organisms that live in it have adapted accordingly.

The privilege is all ours! How fortunate we are to live in an age with such a wealth of resources, and the combined human ingenuity and know-how to maximize those resources.

Just watched this on FB. So many of the images were ones I saw while watching the livestreams. Can't wait for the next expedition in July.

Just wondering does the brightness of lights harm marine organisms on the deep seabed?
