Living Fossils of the Atacama Trench | 4K ROV Highlights
An international team of scientists spent two weeks exploring deep waters off the coast of Chile. They set out to characterize the microbial and macrofaunal communities surrounding the Atacama Trench. The researchers observed incredible biodiversity, collected samples for further study, and located Chile’s deepest and most northern cold seeps. At 2836 meters deep, the seeps provide chemical energy for deep-sea animals living without sunlight, offering insights into the conditions that led to the development of life on Earth.

Dr. Armando Azua-Bustos of the Centro de Astrobiologíca has studied the Atacama Desert for the last decade and led the #AtacamaTrenchAncients expedition to explore the deep waters adjacent to it. When we think of life in the Ocean, we imagine octopuses, whales, and other charismatic megafauna. Still, in reality, the vast majority of life in the Ocean is microscopic - there are more microbes in ...
Light in the Dark

The deep ocean begins where the sunlight ends. It is dark, cold, and inhospitable to humans, yet essential to all life on Earth. The Ocean is our planet’s life support system - regulating the climate, feeding millions, and supplying half of the oxygen that makes this planet habitable. Experience the wonder of a blue planet! Today is World Oceans Day, and we’re thrilled to explore the unknown an...

Has anyone applied these to pleasure boats?
Just wondering does the brightness of lights harm marine organisms on the deep seabed?

Tremendo orgullo para los chilenos!!

Que lindo ❤ parabéns pelo trabalho
Such a great therapeutic video. Thank you.
Just astonishing! - We know so little and act so recklessly.
Is there any interest in the 80m to 120m depth? It's well know that after the last ice age. Waters of the ocean have risen that much since then. You could find some very historical stuff.
It’s creatures like this that live deep down in the ocean as to why we need to #defendthedeep #saveouroceans
Darwin in The Amazing World of Gumballis real
I used to think it was terrible that we've explored more outer space than we have our own oceans. Then I found out how horribly we've destroyed the lives of ocean creatures without even exploring very much and now I just wish we'd leave the oceans alone entirely. The beauty we manage to destroy on the sea and on land, and without the majority of humanity caring, is inexcusable. Thank you to all who do anything big or small to help our oceans and the creatures that live there. 🙏💙
Absolutely incredible. We must protect the deep sea from destructive mining!
Absolutely stunning. We need to do everything we can to preserve our biodiversity
I need to know everything about the little dude 59 seconds in! OMG
;-)) Oh, you are almost as dear as "the little dude."
The natural world is like an art museum and the deep sea is the floor with wild abstract art. The little bioluminescent fellas are in the psychedelic sub-exhibit.
0:58 that is a pokemon
Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for this. It is absolutely astonishing. So many, many, many more people need to see this. It brings such wonderful attention to the fascinating flora and fauna below us. 🖤.
No words for the incredible beauty, grace, and diversity of these creatures. Humans have destroyed so much in their greed and arrogance. We need to awaken to the fact that we are but one species woven into the great tapestry of life in which all species have a place and a purpose.
For the love of God please get a different editor. You are the only institution with high quality footage like this and you are putting it out edited like its a pop music video. I'd like to be able to each species for more than half a second. If I could pay for the unedited footage I would. It's infuriating.
Beautiful beyond words...I had to slow it down and watch it again to really see the animals as it went so quickly. Amazing!
Incredible... a whole other universe within our (once beautiful/now ailing) planet... beautiful!!
So incredibly beautiful!
Our beautiful and wondrous cousins. Beyond sad so many are being lost to The Sixth Mass Extinction, better referred to as the First Mass Extermination since it is our greedy species responsible for their demise.
Touché.
Sublime💚💚💚
Amazing ❤❤❤
Fenomenal trabajo
Outstanding! 👍
Gorgeous!❤❤❤
I love your work (and the beautiful videos that are the least important results) but is "Living Fossils" really a meaningful term? These are creatures related to creatures found in fossils, but they must be distinct, if only because these are deep sea.
Beautiful video!!!
nice music
Hermoso ❤
These animals are crazy
Floating cloaca??
es facinante ver como se descubren especies nuevas en el basto oceano la ciencia esta abriendo las puertas a lo que aún esta por ser descubierto gracias a la labor de los cientificos y biolgos marinos. ¡el abismo esta por iluminarse!
The privilege is all ours! How fortunate we are to live in an age with such a wealth of resources, and the combined human ingenuity and know-how to maximize those resources.
So cute 4:16:35
Thanks for sharing - wow
Hand-waving. Not a single result in this video. Couldn't you at least give us some hint of what you have learned so far (probably at cost to the public of around $1M). Research cruises are not cheap.
I've watched this like... 5 times now and cry each time. This is BEAUTIFUL science communication and I sincerely hope someday I can step foot on that vessel someday.
Creo que quiso decir que lo encontro USA? Y ahora es tiempo para privatizar...
Interesting and thanks. And hence NASA and the Mars Rovers taking snapshots of apparent past Mars stromatolites.
2024 still don't know how to use subtitles translation?
Or just watch the english version of the video?
The Stromatolites are the real OG’s!
That white materia around the methane seeps is a bacteria Beggiatoa. We found the same white bacterial mat around shallow water seeps in southern California. As sulfide oxidizers they pay a role in the biogeochemistry that sees methane being oxidized, sulfate being reduced to hydrogen sulfide and consumed by multicellular organisms. These shallow water systems use both plant-derived and fossil carbon energy sources.
❤❤❤
Cant help but notice how excited and happy everyone is, working. These guys definitely found their purpose, awesome stuff
That pink and yellow fish at 00:57 is incredible! So beautiful. But regarding photosynthesis at serious depth, how can photosynthetic cells be functional in the abyssal sea? By the way, I am a primary English speaker but it's so nice to my ears to hear Espanol y Inglese in the same video! Gracias.
Gracias por su trabajo sigan haciendo lo que hacen
