  • I've crushed the flat earth into smithereens more times than I can count, twice now without using any science at all, but how about one more? There are lots of commercial airline flights that prove conclusively that the earth is a sphere, and not a flat pancake. This is because the Southern Hemisphere exists. Let's take to the skies!

    The great circle argument also holds for flights in the Northern Hemisphere. On my very first transatlantic flight from New York to London, the pilot announced that we were flying over Scotland at the time and were about to start our descent to London. Everyone knows that Scotland is way north of London. I wondered why we didn’t just fly due east from N. America to London.
    A few years later, I began a career as an airline steward for Pan Am. They explained about the great circle routes in our training. Because of the curvature of the Earth, the distance is shorter to fly in an arc to a lower latitude, lessening the distance.

      Wait. what? if the earth is a globe, then the arc is the same irrespective of the latitude. How does it make sense to fly north to Scotland when New York is east? If its a globe or a flat earth, isnt the most direct route a straight bee line to it?

    • @laidbackmedia
      @laidbackmedia Před 7 měsíci +2

      The great circle argument falls badly when we look at any flight tracker sight.
      We see a flat map with flights all on their curved paths darting east an west, yet the few direct north south flights we see are perfectly straight.
      What you were taught about an arc when flying to a lower latitude is not represented on any flight tracker sight.

    • @igorbednarski8048
      @igorbednarski8048 Před 2 měsíci +3

      That doesn't really make much sense, the shortest route from NYC to London is not over Scotland.
      Planes don't actually fly exactly straight along the shortest path (or great circle routes), flight paths can get a little complicated for reasons such as weather, traffic, ATC strikes, volcanic ash, airspace closures, the availability of diversion airports, overflight fees and more. There could have been 100 reasons for this flightpath, but your explanation doesn't make sense.

    I’ve flown from the U.S. to Australia, and from Australia to South Africa. Both flights were close to the same length - within an hour or two. I made this comment on a flerfer forum once, and I was told all sorts of crazy things:
    1) I’m a liar. There are no flights from one part of the Southern Hemisphere to another.
    2) The plane - a 747 in both cases - flew much faster from Australia to South Africa. MUCH faster.
    3) Everyone on the plane from Australia to S.A. was put to sleep with some sort of sleeping gas, so the flight only seemed shorter because everyone slept through half of it…plus we slept through a refueling stop somewhere in between in a 747 wouldn’t have the range to fly that distance on the FE map.
    4) Australia and South Africa were actually places in the Northern Hemisphere and we were all fooled into thinking we’d flown to the Southern Hemisphere.
    These were all ridiculous, of course. 1) I have actually made those flights, although they were several decades ago. 2) If 747s could fly twice as fast as they do from L.A. to Sydney, why wouldn’t they go twice as fast on ALL over-water routes? Cutting a 14-hour trip to seven hours would be wonderful! 3) Funny, but my watch - and all the clocks in both countries - said I was on the plane for about 15 hours. Do they reset the clocks for everyone at your destination just to fool the passengers from one flight? Plus, if we could be safely gassed and put to sleep with zero ill effects on planes, why not do it for all long flights? I’d happily consent to it if it meant I wouldn’t have to sit in that uncomfortable seat for 14 hours, unable to sleep since I can’t ever fall asleep on planes. I’d consent to it on short flights, too! 4) As an astronomy buff, I spent quite a lot of time studying the night sky in the Southern Hemisphere. Orion was upside-down and there were many constellations not visible at all from the Northern Hemisphere. Everything rotates around the southern star, too.
    These claims that flerfers make are easily verified or debunked. Just get on a plane> I guess flerfers are all too poor to afford plane tickets.

      Yeah it's so convenient. They'll have money for tickets to Flat Earther conventions or to fund laser-ring gyroscopes for their gurus but to buy a plane ticket to Australia or New Zealand?
      (And in the case of those Southern Hemisphere flerfs, tickets to go north that don't go to a convention of Flat Earthers) They'll suddenly be like "Nope, can't afford that. Don't need to though!"

We use a compass pointing toward the magnetic north and we must to compensate this effect when using a map. Because the north is continuously moving! Someday, far in the future, it will be placed at the south hemisfere! 2 - G Force (gravity). As an acrobatic pilot, we have to consider G force, during the maneuvers. There is an instrument inside the aircraft to measured it. 3 - Inercial navigation. Precise giroscope is used to give us the position of the airplane, anywhere in the globe. This device works because of the movement of the Earth. 4 - GPS. How the satellite system is, in the flat earth model? 5 - The explanation, or calculation of Lift, the force needed to beat the Wheight (gravity) that allows machines heavier than the air to fly!! Enough? I have more...

    I am a retired airline pilot with a 38-year career flying airplanes worldwide. The calculations we used to complete transcontinental or trans-oceanic flights were absolutely based on a global world using mostly Lambert Conformal Conic projection to convert the sphere into navigation charts. We used Great Circle Routes to shorten flight distances and times. Great circle routes do not exist on a flat earth. I have yet to see a flat earth map that would provide accurate distances, times, and headings for any long-distance flight. In fact, were I to plot such a course and use the headings provided by a flat earth map, God knows where I’d end up, and likely the distance and therefore the time would be wildly in error. Imagine an air transport industry using such folly.

      Lol I had a Flatard try and disprove gravity by saying "if gravity existed and the world was a sphere, then why doesnt water stick to a ball if you pour it on?"
      He thought that was a total gotcha, and if the Earth was a sphere the seas should just fall off.
      He literally could not understand the difference in mass between a rubber ball filled with air and the entire planet...
      "But they are both supposedly spheres so you're obviously wrong" 🤣

      @@stevepalpatine2828 Further, they’re confusing centrifugal force with gravity. Gravity actual pushes, not pulls, according to Einstein. Then there’s the Strong force and Weak Force...
      Flat earthers also cannot explain continental drift. There are plate tectonics moving in every direction.
      With our technology, there are telescopes that should be able to see Australia from Chicago, right! According to flat earth believers, that should be possible. Well??? Show me.
      If there is no Antarctica, why do we see Aurora Australis? The earth has two magnetic poles. But the flat earth only has one? How do compasses work again?
      The only future for flat earthers is to fall flat on their faces.

    looking at the azimuthal equidistant projection, you would expect a flight from perth to sydney (west to east coast) to take three times as long as a flight from new york to LA. but since we live on a sphere, it's not. it's an HOUR SHORTER
