Destroying Flat Earth Without Using Science - Part 4: The Conspiracy

  • It may seem like I've said all there is to say about the flat earth phenomenon, that dumbest hoax on the internet, but we haven't yet examined the conspiracy itself. What would have to be true for this scam to be pulled off? Rather incredibly, without making a single observation or knowing anything about science whatsoever, even just the story of the con itself falls apart quite laughably upon the slightest bit of scrutiny. Let's check it out.

Imagine being one of those people who studied Physics for years through school, then University, then getting your masters. And you're super excited to start on your career as a physicist, and then first day on the job the boss calls you into their office and says "btw, all that stuff you learnt over the last 10 years or so...it's all a lie. We don't actually do any work, we just sit around playing video games all day and then tell people we've discovered something new." What a mindfuck that would be.

Well, in fact the daily life of a scientist look like what you described x) many mails, many coffee, you do little things, send many mails again, do one experiment, then right a paper, and so you make one little step further in science, and you continue the cycle.
But yes, sciences couldn't go far if we couldn't start from what our ancestors discovered. Each generation need the previous one to teach them.

Best tip I've found is that you can't convince someone out of being stupid. You can only lead them to do it themselves.
Legit just ask them how things work. The moment they mention some BS... ask them how that works. Then how X interacts with Y.
Genuine questions, not pointed. Basically, lead them to try and answer the questions you think will help them understand they're wrong.
The moment they say "I don't know" Tell them you're actually really curious about it... then ask them if they can find the answer.
You can't convince someone out of being stupid, but you can leave them with the questions that require answers that WILL convince them out of it... and the moment you come at it from a point of wanting THEM to explain it, you cease to be part of a group trying to mislead them. Never state "Hey... this wouldn't work". Just go "Hey... I noticed this. How would these two things work together?"
People don't like cognitive dissonance, which is why they ignore the facts and avoid the people presenting those facts. If you make the dissonance come from within themselves, it'll eat them from inside out until they're done.
It's how my mom got out of being a Jehovah's Witness.
    It's a pretty useful technique.

It's not even like talking to a wall, it's like talking to super advanced AI that's sole purpose is to sound as confusing and irritating as possible. It was like a misaligned tile in your bathroom that's stuck there forever, hurting your eyes every time you look at it, was a person. If there's one person on the planet, whose beliefs and way of living is solid fucking titanium-hard immovable object that will NEVER change under any circumstances, i insist on believing that it was this particular dude. It's literally like meeting that annoying troll that's dedicated to talk to you with the sole purpose of annoying you by talking things that hurt your IQ, and it turns out that's how he is even in real life, and he just can't help it. It left me scarred.
I once read a story of a flat earther so determined to prove the earth is flat, that he actually started to conduct some scientific experiments. But those experiments were simple and giving no results (according to him), so the madlad actually flew to antarctica, travelled to a north pole with some guide using gps and compass and some other stuff along the entire way. BUT IT WASN'T ENOUGH so he just fucking went to a stratospheric flight, i don't remember correctly but there was something about sending a camera into space??? Well, i don't recall very well but the point is that in the end he saw earth's curvature with his own eyes, and returned to announce that they were all wrong. He stopped being flat earther, he saw the truth and just couldn't deny it any more...
...every other dude in his flat-group said that he's been bought by CIA and called him an agent of Illuminati... like for real, they expelled him from the fucking group after he showed them his material, which were pictures and videos of both him on Antarctica and him seeing space and earth from space. Dude spent over a year doing all these stuff and they said nah.
I refused to believe it was real and that someone would go so far, but after i met that one dude, i started believing that this indeed happened. I mean, with all the shit going on in florida, this isn't so weird.

But can anyone tell me what their response is when they are asked why objects are pulled in a downward direction? Even if the earth earth was flat there would still need to be some explanation for why things are always pulled downwards. A few might also say the downward force is also electromagnetism.

You know, I think there's one important question we should ask Flat Earthers whenever they bring up the conspiracy or ice walls and guards, etc.
    "What do they eat?"
Because trying to figure out what they eat means you need to delve into the logistics of such an endeavour of getting food and supplies to those people.

    • @stylesrj
      @stylesrj Před 7 měsíci +2

Of course, one Flat Earther did try to answer that question with "It's not a big job! They just use radar!"
Because yeah, it's only a few hundred thousand miles to cover, right?
And radar just makes the logistical nightmare worse because not only isn't radar magic, you now have to have installations dotted about the entire circumference, personnel to go out there and fix them and enough facilities to provide overlapping coverage.
Then of course there's the logistics behind moving the personnel to those places, shipping the equipment as you can't have any radar down for too long as a gap could mean someone might sneak through... oh and trained operatives who can tell the difference between a ship and say a whale or wave or the ocean floor. Because I'm pretty sure they also mean sonar as well as radar.
Then of course there's that thing where radar isn't magic... there's a reason why lifeboats have a big sheet of metal foil in their signalling kit; it's so they can show up on radar. So if someone were to sneak up to the edge, they could.
Which means you'll still need armies of guards... which means it's starting to look like a very big job.

Twentysided's article on the Illusive Island was very informative on just how much effort would be required to hide the construction of a single Arleigh-Burke Destroyer; not even a Battleship or a Carrier but a standard modern warship.
And Flat Earthers believe there's entire secret fleets of warships no one is supposed to know about?
Even if they're supposedly government entities building those ships, anyone could track the amount of supplies and cargo being sent out to the edge.
Flat Earthers make no mention of the supposed huge fleets of cargo ships and aircraft needed. What are they (Flat Earthers) hiding from us, eh?

I actually went to Antarctica. We evaded military patrols and reptilian royal guardsmen for weeks, until at last we came up The Wall ... a wall so big it would dwarf even Donald Trump's wildest dreams. With climbing spikes and ropes, we climbed the wall. The 100km climb took us days, and we finally reached the top. When we made it to the top, we found a series of mostly abandoned ancient alien fortresses and buildings. The top of the wall was about 50km wide, and it took us some time to reach the far side and look down at what lay beyond. What we saw was an entire _other_ world beyond! Dense forests, frozen mountains and snowy tundra, even deserts off in the distance. We used our telescope to search the distant lands for signs of life. We saw native people living there, as well as monsters and creatures beyond your wildest imagining! We even saw what we could only describe as the White Walkers, leading armies across the lands. They looked up at us with cold, blue eyes and I know they saw us. We were chilled to the bone with terror, so we ran back to the opposite edge of the wall. There we assembled our hang gliders, and we leapt from the top of the wall. We glided back to southern Chíle, landing at around 5pm, and went and enjoyed some tacos. This is the first time I've ever spoken about this expedition. The world isn't flat or round, it's infinite and the further you go the more Earth spawns!

If I'm being totally honest about it, there's a vast amount of stuff that I can't scientifically prove on either side of this debate, so I have to look at what others have to say. I consider myself a tabula rosa person, or open to any new idea regardless of how crazy it may sound. And... the round earthers just have so much more compelling evidence, and there aren't any obvious holes in the logic. When I accept the round earth way of thinking, each phenomena of nature can be explained in detail using both common sense and specific math. When I accept the flat earth way of thinking, then suddenly the moon and stars make no sense, the southern hemisphere doesn't exist, and the entire world is engulfed in a conspiracy that spans thousands of years. I'm a history nut, and I can't honestly believe that. I can't honestly believe that they've got millions of people - including all world leaders - in their pocket either.
So in short, even though I'm open to new ideas, the evidence of the flat earth community just isn't enough for me. The community as a whole strikes me weirdly as well - I'm atheist, since I don't believe that God is what created us and even if he did I see no reason for them to care about us in the slightest. As you might imagine, I don't get along with a good deal of flat earthers because of that. They come off as the type of people that instead of listening first then responding second, they listen first then regurgitate second. It doesn't strike me as very bright, so I take what they say with some salt just on principle now.

Dave -- the whole reason I'm here is to find more simple ways to disprove flat earth to a friend, otherwise, I absolutely would not care and would move on with my life. So, as mentioned I have a friend who is a flat earther. I and so many others have tried talking to him about this belief, even trying to convince him that it's a waste of time and thought cells with folding laundry being vastly more important to invest oneself in. And when I asked him what there is to gain by lying to people en masse about the shape of the earth, he said that if "they" (he could not tell me who "they" were) could get people to believe in something so small as the shape of the earth being round, then it would be easier to make people believe in so many other things. He pointed out other things that have been legitimate lies by the government and those with power, to make his point that a ball earth is also a lie.
Honestly, I can't talk to him anymore about this, because he's so entrenched in his ideas of conspiracy theories that even a simple test proving a round earth is, for him, easily disprovable using, you guessed it, words like 'perception' and 'electromagnetic waves', etc, not actual proof, and things that I guarantee he doesn't understand how they work. I don't know how to get people who believe in conspiracy theories see the light, that it's not as how they think things are. He's not the only one in my friend group to believe in flat earth, but he is the only vocal one, and the only one who wants others to believe as he does. (It's even to the point that our priest, yes, shoot me, I'm a Christian, told me that if he starts talking about flat earth again, I need to tell him that he's sinning and he needs to go to confession before he can commune again.)

Unfortunately you can't convince everyone. He will ONLY change his beliefs when he wants to. He probably not dumb just self centred or scared about how if he is not the centre of the universe then his whole meaning of life falls apart.
If you want to help him start at the root of the problem. Slowly make him more confident about the idea of not everything having to be about him or be black and white, good against evil .

An important aspect is surveying, in which you measure land to figure out its geometry: how long does your water line need to run, and how much rainfall did the state of Texas get last year?
That last point is important, because it's a study called GEODETIC surveying. In it, you must account for the fact that the earth is round, triangles don't all add up to 180⁰, etc. So every person who has ever measured area of land bigger than a house must be in on it too.

I swear to god, these flat earther are undergoing 5 stages of grief:
Denial - They don't believe on proofs using logic given by the video.
Anger - They type angry comment saying "lies" and stuff
Bargaining - They ask for empirical proof despite the proof is directly in front of their face.
Depression - Many people debunk their comments, and they stopped decided commenting because they are losing.
Acceptance - The experince makes them question their own beliefs and decided to do their own research free of biases (hopefully)
