- My last flat earth video didn't sit too well with their "community", to say the least. My 10 challenges were apparently so impossible that no one attempted a single one of them, despite the numerous pathetic attempts at response videos. It has become clear that even though I've been explaining middle school level science in these videos, it's still way too far above their heads, so with this one I really wanted to break it down even further for them. Here's a tidy little morsel of flat earth destruction that requires precisely zero scientific knowledge to comprehend. Enjoy.

@@prplt Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, 1958. Basically a few shaded cels and lines, though technically still CGI. The ability to substantially render or create full range graphics was still in its infancy throughout even the 70's and early 80's. You'll hear a lot of people say the first "real" CGI popped up 1972, when a hand was fully rendered in CGI (this graphic is pretty cool actually and a huge leap forward in the tech, I recommend checking it out)

The fact that thousands of years ago, people still figured out the earth was not flat without science, without space ships, but to this day we have all of that and people still believe the earth is flat, it shocks me.

And, unless we realize that various sources tell different facets of the truth or are outright lying, those people believe in authority in a "first come, first served" way, which are those authorities who have been framed as "credible" during their childhood.
Flat earthers are basically that kid in school who always claimed he knew everything, yet flunked every test "on purpose" because he "was bored."
Funny you mention this I had one of those types in my class when I was in school he didn’t believe the earth was flat though but he believed in so many other stupid things that it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s a deluded flat earther nowadays

Cartographers have always had to contend with errors in mapping as they try to plot a 3-D surface onto a 2-D surface without incurring too much error. That's why there are so many different possible map projections in use throughout history. But you knew all that, right?

I'm from Australia - southern hemisphere - and I remember being so surprised when I travelled to Europe that the face of the Moon is the same - but upside down!
Of course, it isn't the Moon which is upside down - it's the horizon or if you like us and the ground we stand on is upside down. Because well the earth is round.
actually, this "zenith inversion effect" applies to ANY patch of sky, and tells you nothing about the shape of the observing platform.

@@DX16 yes, the effect happens at the zenith, which can be anywhere. of course, it's easiest to observe with the moon, which is a large object, with features. but it's pretty easy to observe with a constellation.
pick any object near the zenith, but slightly forward. now walk forward 350 miles (*). the entire starfield shifts by about 5 degrees. the object is now near the zenith, but slightly BEHIND it. since your neck does not twist backwards, YOU TURN AROUND.
it's the fact that the observer turns around that causes the inversion, not the shape of the planet.
(*) as i write this, i realize that i've been SAYING this wrong ... a lot. the zenith inversion effect doesn't "tell you nothing about the shape of the observing platform", it tells you EVERYTHING about the shape of the observing platform.
Since everything you look at above you that is not in the earth's atmosphere is VERY far away (an assumption, but true), the LINEAR shift of the starfield as you walk along the surface requires the surface to be a sphere, and the magnitude of the shift tells you the radius.
nevertheless, the inversion effect remains an artifact of the physiology of the observer, and there is a well-known trivial method for removing it.

But I can even give you some other proofs. Things I did as young kid, so not that hard.
1) Horizon Drop - get clear u shaped tube and put some water in it (coloured water is best). Take onto highest altitude you can and measure how much lower the horizon is to level of that tubed water, which is more then down at lower ground level.
2) How come you can never see the Sun or Moon obeying laws of perspective ... they should get bigger the closer they get to you and should appear to move quicker the closer they get. And the reverse when moving away?
3) There are only 3 celestial objects in the sky that ever appear in a crescent shape. The moon is one, but there are 2 others. What are they? And how come those 2 others appear as crescents but no other planets or other celestial objects do?
4) Tracking the Sun and you can see what is called analemma (although did not know what it was called until many years later in middle school science class). So how does the Sun do that on a flat earth, and more importantly how come no one elsewhere in the world has ever witnessed in reality the Sun moving backwards at any time?
5) An Azimuthal Equidistant map ALWAYS is only accurate to and from it center point. In both bearings and distances. But is less accurate the further away you get from the center. This alone means nada, as that could work on any shape of the earth. But re-draw the center point on a 2nd location, and it does the same thing as before. Re-draw it on a 3rd spot and once again those same principles still works. This means using any AE map that anyone can verify proves Earth is a sphere when they check it with 3 different center points. Or in other words Gleason was an idiot for stealing and using such a projection as the AE map because it actually can be proven to show that Earth is a sphere. Smh. Besides the idiocy of keeping Lat / Long lines which alone is telling you the shape of Earth. It is no wonder sailors such as Joshua Slocum had debunked it w/in decade of it being published and it fell into obscurity shortly after.
The problem is that these people think emotionally not logically. It is an ego problem. I.e. "I am afraid of the universe and the only way I can be comfortable is to be right about everything." Lazy minds want overly simple solutions that they can work out on their own without reference to any authority outside of themselves.

Dave I have a question. My mother is a flat earther and I tried as hard as possible to disprove her. I told her everything I knew, told her about timezones, lunar eclipses, day and night cycle and much more. She even destroyed my mova globe (which is extremely expensive, and you can research about it if you want). Could you please help me change her little brain dead mind?

Just for fun I tried to make a workable flat earth model. I have something like 838 iterations at this point and none of them work. You can get ONE thing to work, but then nothing else does. I was never able to solve the moon and sun ever. As of now, I am throwing in the towel since it just does not work. Maybe I am biased since I have been to Antarctica and I saw absolutely no armed guards, no armed patrol boats or planes flying overhead to stop us. I did see some whales tho and some great icebergs.
That's the reason why there is no such thing as "flat earth model", since all of their "explanations" are always 'ad hoc', and they never comply with other "explanations". Not to mention that, most of the time, their "explanations" are contradicting to some simple observations.

Yeah, the best I can think of for the moon thing would be some sort of concave shape, but then you'd have to position it around the outer ring of whatever map you want to use, which just doesn't work. Maybe if you're really lucky you can get it to work over the equator, but then we have to ask ourselves how a concave satellite would even be possible.
It's certainly a fun exercise to try, but definitely not to waste any real effort on.

I'm not making an argument, but a more apt example of viewing the moon from earth would be having two "buddies" standing next to each other, as close as possible, looking at a third person as far away as possible while still visible. I’ve heard even stranger. I think it was something like, the reflection of the Earth on a mirrored surface. Though that Earth was actually a sphere, I think. Many times larger than the Earth. The flat Earth part of Earth we’re familiar with is actually just one of the smaller craters. And I think aliens come from worlds in other craters.

After seeing this video, flat earthers will think one of the two things.
1. The moon is fake and it’s CGI
2. The earth is a globe. (The least likely one.)
Don't be so harsh with them, they will try to jump of the Earth.
And obviously, there is no gravity. They'd just float in space, watching earth rocket up into space, propelled by no means at all, with an invisible dome filled with stars and two glowing objects.

I just had a lengthy argument with a friend who has admitted that the evidence for a flat earth outweighs the evidence for a spherical earth. After many hours of debate I came to the conclusion that the real reason he believes in a flat earth is due to his world view. As in his philosophical/theological world view. I came to the realization that NO amount of evidence will convince him otherwise because he will always find a way to warp reality to fit his world view. This is not an intellectual problem that needs to be overcome using measurable evidence, this is a psychological problem that needs to be overcome with truth.

Next time there is a lunar eclipse, have him explain how it works on a flat earth.
Lunar eclipses happen on a regular basis, almost everyone has seen at least one in their life (all you have to do is look up at the right time), and they make perfect sense if the earth is a spinning sphere orbiting the sun. Astronomers using the heliocentric model can predict them decades in advance, precisely saying when they will occur, where they will be visible from, and exactly how they will look for any location on earth, and they will be exactly right about all of it every single time.
Meanwhile, flat earthers have no idea how to explain how they happen on a flat earth. They can’t even agree on a possible mechanism, never mind predict when they will happen. Lunar eclipses make no sense at all on a flat earth.

A few years ago I had a conversation with my 20 something son (I’m 64) and he told me about flat earthers and said they really believe it. I said no way, they’re just a bunch of trolls that are yanking your chain. He said no, and so I started watching some CZcams videos. I still think some of them are just goofing on us or trying to scam money or just seeking attention. But I have to admit a lot of them really do seem to believe it. As a mathematics professor I find this deeply disturbing.

Ikr? Why are flat earthers so fascinating? I guess because they're just so completely and obviously wrong about something they could easily figure out themselves. You can't help but just want them to be able to see it.
@Jonathan Sanders That sounds dangerously like a testable claim. Be careful with those. Just be wishy washy and spineless. That way any objection can be handwaved away. What is the Lord's name? Yahweh? Jesus? The Lord? Jehovah? I'll call them all out? ... Nothing yet. How long does it take?

Thank you Dave. I have a friend, he was troubled. For years always talking about conspiracy theories. He got really dark. During lockdown I've been throwing your videos at him. One day he said he woke up. Watched one again. Went for a walk. And realised how stupid he had been. Thank you Dave.
