      I spent weeks trying to make this lens choice. I thought I’d share the process I went through, and maybe it’ll help someone else! I think it’s good practice to fully understand the trade-offs, even if that means the conclusion is to use the EF lenses! Atleast you can be confident in the decision.

    I got the C70 with the speedbooster and a shitload of EF L primes with crazy low F-stops.. And i have the R5C + the ND Adaptor wich is also EF..
    All in all the same lenses for both cameras and ND "build in" - ish in both cameras.. both have cinema gammut and xf-avc (from december the c70 also have that in slow-mo...with new firmware update) And both with four audio channels.
    I normally connect both with tentacle syncs and some track-E´s for sound and then a NTG boom mic into the c70 with XLR.
    In my opinion the c70 is really soft compared with the R5C, and when i use the few RF glas i have it looks a little bit sharper on the c70 but the biggest difference is when i use the R5c...
    But in the end its just two different tools.. and for really long time cinema cameras was not meant to use autofocus.. Arri doesent do it yet.. ( I know I know... red just did it.. but still)
    I think you are right about RF being the better glas (I know you are.. it is damn well made) and I am happy with the few RF ones i have... but tend to just go back to the system of EF because i can switch around between the two cameras with the same lenses and not having to bring both EF and RF if i want to use ND on the R5C and have full frame look on the C70.
    But I get your choice.. i Really do.

      Thanks for chiming in! You’ve got some good insight!
      If I were in your position (already owning a bunch of L series ef glass) I would almost certainly go the same route you’re going!
      I was in a unique position in that I didn’t have any RF or EF lenses (coming from Sony) so my decision was based around which lens collection to start building from scratch. Hence, the RF decision
      We’re pretty fortunate in that there isn’t a wrong choice to make in this scenario!👍

      @baekmedier Před rokem +1

    Do you think canon will release an rf-rf speed booster to get us c70 users as close to full frame as possible. I currently have both the r6 and c70, along with the rf 15-35, 24-70, and 100mm macro. It would be really nice to take full advantage of the focal length with out the crop factor. I just don’t have any ef lens at all either

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs  Před rokem

      You’ve got a great set up to work with! I’m with you, I’d LOVE to speed boost those lenses and get the extra light/FOV.
      Unfortunately, physics is not on our side here. RF lenses have a very shallow flange depth, which allows for some great new lens advancements, but it doesn’t allow enough room to “speedboost” the image via an adapter.
      I usually have my 15-35 glued to my C70 to try and get a wider frame😂

  • @LonzosStudios
    @LonzosStudios Před rokem +1

    Why do you feel you have to commit to one mount, dude if you need a zoom range that doesn't exist in the RF mount just get it in the EF mount. The EF is a complete system IMO. I'm a canon user for over 20 years now so I have tones of EF glass. I also have a R5 and purchase some RF glass to pair with it but I wasn't blown away by the performance difference between the 2 mounts. I know for your C70 there is a native mount element to using RF vs EF but the difference here is the fact that they are both canon glass, same company speed booster, same company mounts and same company glass. It's not like getting an adaptor to mount Sony glass on a canon or getting an adaptor to mount a canon glass on a Panasonic...

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs  Před rokem +1

      That’s a good, thought provoking question! Thanks for asking.
      My inclination is to say it’s a real personal preference thing, and mixing ef/rf lenses would have a negligible affect on the final image. So if that’s the approach that works for you then great!
      My preference to having a matching set probably comes down to uniformity, consistency, and simplicity. You posed a great question of “why not use an adapter for mismatched lenses?” And my thought is, “Why you an extra adapter if I don’t have to?”
      Granted the Rf system isn’t fully developed so there might be some gaps but much like yourself I’d like to get 20 years down the road and still own a full set of matching Canon glass👍

    I've been using EF glass with the Canon speedbooster since I got the C70 over 18 months ago. Most commonly the 24-105 on a gimbal shooting for television. (Side note, just had to send my C70 back to Canon because the HDMI stopped working, so not happy about that) But I've had issues with autofocus that make me curious if RF glass would fix. From time to time, the autofocus will be locked in on the subject's face, and then it will just start hunting all over the place. I have had it happen in well let (even outside) circumstances, meaning it isn't an issue with the camera being able to discern the face. There were some rumors early on that dark skin in poorly lit environments would hinder the autofocus. My point is that I'm sure that's not it. Firmware is updated, lighting is good, faces are visible, and the camera will hunt wildly during the shot. Has anyone shooting RF glass had a similar experience? I am wondering if the RF 24-105 would fix that problem.

    • @TroyMairs
      @TroyMairs  Před rokem +1

      Oh man, its always tough to have to send a camera in. Most notably, if it's a primary camera. I feel naked and vulnerable without my A cam, Lol!
      It's an interesting issue you're dealing with. During my time using speedboosted ef glass I did have a bit of a struggle with the af performance, but I was asking a lot of it at the time. I remember a shoot with a dark skinned subject wearing all black and I wasn't able to use af at all.
      I have worked with that same client several times since, using RF lenses, and had a much better experience (In better lit environments, however). It's nothing conclusive of course and its just my experience, so take it at face value lol!
      I'd be curious to know if the speedbooster plays a role in the focus getting thrown? Perhaps using a standard ef-rf adapter would give you better af experience without having to buy a new lens?
      Thanks for asking the question and joining the conversation! Hopefully some more people can add in their experiences too!

      i've had some auto focus issues with both RF and EF zoom lens (with the Canon adaptor). So it may be a limit in the camera's focusing ability. Most of the time it happens, it's a little dark, but the focus issues have also been in bright shots as well. Not sure if it'll improve with firmware. So, i'm not sure if the RF zoom will fix your issue.

    Another excellent video and for sure the rf lenses are very nice to use and the Tesla analogy was excellent especially given how Tesla have just had to drop their prices significantly. rf feels like the future but a little like autonomous driving does. Compared to pl and ef and Sony it’s a long way off. That said ef has to be now consigned to the developers trash. I couldn’t justify buying a c300iii two years ago because of the mount but I wish I had as things really haven’t moved on in rf and there is still a lot on confusion in the world of rf and full frame. Lockable rf should have been standard in the cine world but the lack of lenses might be the clue there. The canon stop on third party rf is huge and these L series lenses are really designed for the full frame canon stills cameras. It’s hard to know why anyone wants the partial image circle of a full frame rf hitting a s35mm sensor and it does feel like a non starter to do that off the bat when the ef solution at least allows for both options speed booster or not and of course using pl s35 cine lenses. Again where is this all going. Lenses designed for full frame coverage are always going to be much more expensive and huge. Arri and Red have just released s35 sensor cameras and given how much cine lenses out there are super 35mm then it’s easy to see how a full frame rf stills lens might be sitting in a corner on its own. Canon has always had the philosophy to base their lens and camera development on stills and the stills user and build in hybrids. Their cinema line has been confused to say the least. The cn-e are rehoused full frame L series lenses. Their other offerings are just confused and too expensive for what they are. They make doc cameras but not really broadcast ready or cine ready cameras. The r5c might typify their confusion especially when compared to the c70. They are even confused about their form factors. When they brought out the c300 and c500 recent models the by word was modularity of design body and expansion units etc but all in ef??! Ok pl too. We waited for the c200 replacement and ended up with the c70 hdmi connections and the staggered release to raw. As a result no replacement for the c200 and instead a complete parts bastardisation and confused cop out with the c70 when people were already very happy with the form factor of the c100ii and c200. The only other elephant in the room is RED and their adoption of the rf even to the point of packaging another manufacturers adapter in the box when buying a komodo. Canon and Red have clearly made some significant agreements not least with auto focus and the mount and now of course raw licensing and the use of a compressed internal raw format as seen in the c70. The fact that Red are in the cinema space and don’t make lenses probably made this all bearable for canon and their lack of movement in bringing out any kind of rf cine camera themselves in the 5-8k Komodo territory says a lot. The rf and Red conundrum made buying the Komodo the only logical future proof decision at the time for me but I do have the c70 and fx6 as work backs ups but I never reach for them unless specifically needed. They are great cameras but not cine cameras. I hear your preferences for the c70 but if money were no object the c300iii or c500ii both with evf is an absolute dream and is undoubtedly a pro choice but still ef??! But for that I don’t think the c70 would exist. The Komodo is a Red compromise but handles so well across so many use cases and is a Goldilocks camera in so many ways. And as a way into red cameras it’s fantastic. Moving to a raptor is easy for the extra definition and detail but the workflow pipeline can be built ready and waiting when you are ready and the transition is seamless. In many ways the Komodo is a much easier camera to operate and it’s only the concerns over Reds policy to not undermine the raptors that might mean Red are slow to build up software or firmware releases for the Komodo. That all said thanks for the excellent video and starting the debate. If we wanted proof of how bad things are then the recent pending release of kinefinitys mavo s35 ii sums up everything we know that is frustrating about how camera manufacturers think and how much politics and ip influences releases and the products we eventually get to choose from. Take care and thanks.

      Hey Ken! I can’t thank you enough for providing such an insightful opinion! This is exactly the type of conversation I’m hoping to have around these videos/topics. Respectful and thought out, so thank you!
      You made a number of great points, one really stuck out to me that I hadn’t considered; the number of new s35 cine cameras that have come out even at the highest level of film production. They’re here to stay for the foreseeable future it would appear. I’ll be thinking about that point and the implications for some time.
      The potential of the RF mount is what has be so excited about it. The shorter flange depth and better electronic communication seem like spring boards for optical engineers to dive off of and make a splash. Like the Tesla, it’s very speculative though, and there is a reason those old muscle cars hold value.
      Would you be up for chatting more about this?? Thanks again for the tremendous value Ken!
