Hector Salamanca Origins - Most Terrifying Cartel Boss Who Created Countless Psychotic Killers

- There is perhaps nothing more iconic- or frankly terrifying- than the familiar sound of a concierge bell ringing followed by the icy stares of one of the most-feared Dons in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul combined. When Hector Salamanca joined the cast of Vince Gilligan’s roster of heavy-hitting characters, few people could have anticipated just how integral he would become to the story of his universe. After all, he spent most of his time in the first show wheelchair-bound and had maybe a couple of scenes worth of dialogue work at best. But now, ask any fan of this Emmy-winning drama series who Tio is, and it will immediately conjure up an image of Mark Margolis in their heads, whether they like it or not. But who exactly is Hector Salamanca? What is the inspiration behind his character? And why is he as important to the story of both Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad as he is? We’ll answer all those questions and more with this video; this is Hector Salamanca’s origins - Explored.

There was not one bad actor in this entire series. Hector was amazing and I can’t believe Hector was originally meant to be a one-off background character.

Mark Margolis deserves kudos for doing more acting with his FACE than most actors do with their bodies in those stroke afflicted scenes. He radiates passionate, seething hate for all competitors and the menacing cruelty of a rabid rottweiler.
Very eloquent, Mr Cumshot.

Hector when he wasn't on his wheelchair had all the characteristics of the Salamanca. He was quiet but had killer tact like the twins. He kept a somewhat charming appearance like Lalo and he had a very intimidating presence like Tuco.
In chess Hector is the King he can't move much but he has control over all the pieces and if he dies the game is over.
Lalo is likely a knight or queen that can get into places you didn't expect.
The twins are like the bishops. Each occupy a different colored square but they work in tandem

The story line of Nacho replacing Hector's heart pills is fascinating. How he obtains the pills from Pryce, gets advice from Mike on how to make the switch, and then Gus picking up on Nacho's plot just after Hector has his stroke.
It's interesting that BCS connection to BB makes it all really kind of Gus's story, and the main characters Saul and Walter are just focused on to examine the way their experiences led them to influence how Gus's revenge was thwarted.
It's not surprising, Walter White and Saul Goodman are nobodies while Gus Fring is a powerful gangster.
Gus got what he wanted in a way.
@@die1mayer you're insulting Gus, are you saying he got killed by a nobody?
@@die1mayer and Heisenberg is as popular as Pablo Escobar in his time, there is not a single drug dealer who doesn't know him
Gus got what he wanted. He killed every Salamanca, and you could argue he also killed Hector too.
I would love to see a spin off for the origins of the Salamanca’s. Hectors sons, how they met Bolsa and Eladio, how they became powerful and dangerous
Hector most likely met Eladio when they were children. Since the cartel they have isn’t that old they probably planned it years in advance
I would love this, ESPECIALLY if they found a way to include Tony Dalton's Lalo, even if it was only in flash forwards or something
I've thought about this before, but rather a Origin story for Gustavo and Max. With the Cartel and Hector playing a huge role in it. Aswell a sequel series about Jesse Pinkman. Maybe he finds another girl who something drastic and illegal happens to, like human trafficking. And with his experience he manages to save her. But that is just an example.
My conclusion is basically if Vince Gilligan were to ever make these two spinoff series happen. The Origins of Gustavo Fring and the Cartel aswell as some closure and maybe the only *happy* ending we'll see in the entire cinematic universe of Gilligan would make for a Cinematic Universe I personally would place above the MCU.
@@nielslehnen6076 Did you not see El Camino? Jesse's story is over, he got his "happy" ending, I would like to see something about the origins of Gus but at the same time it's getting increasingly hard to de-age Giancarlo Esposito and part of what makes him such a good villain is how vague his backstory is, imo I think BCS is gonna be the final installment of the breaking bad universe
@@sntreulfravn2321 if they leave it as is nobody is gonna complain, one 10/10 show BB and one 9/10 show BCS. Arguably already the greatest universe ever created. However with Vince Gilligan I believe it's very plausible to go to the lengths of the possibilities. I think many would want a origin series about the Cartel and Gus, de-aging issues aside. But with Aaron Paul getting older and older a short sequel series about him could be done. I don't think he had a happy ending at all, he just "made it out". A story where he actually makes a new life for himself and overcomes new conflicts could be very compelling.
Hector is my favorite character. He starts off almost like the grandpa from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a seemingly unaware old crippled man, but he is able to prove otherwise. His lessons shaped his family massively as well as lead them to their downfall. He cared so much about them that he lost every single one and was powerless. His final scene really made me love him as he has nothing left but is still able to take down his prime enemy. The look of sadness before turning into pure hatred at Gus is some of the best facial acting I have ever seen. It conveys more than any simple insult could.
That's absulutely what I feel about him
Indeed. Make your favorite character a monster. Jesus man. Then you humanize him and make him not a monster?!
Moronic af
@@cheeseburgerinparadise7124it’s a show of fictitious ppl?
Nah he's just a piece of sh*t. One of the most evil characters on the show. I liked it when Gus left him a cripple in BCS.
Hector is literally the old dude at the end of Clockwork Orange. The one who's wife died as a result of the in-out in-out attack by Alex and his droogies.
It comes down to loss of blood, the Salamanca‘s lost so much to gain there respect…. Hector said it himself Salamanca blood, so much of his family died to push the name to where it was… he felt the name entitled him being untouchable….
He was right and wrong at the same time…
If the twins had been under better leadership like Lalo it would of turned out differently
I don’t know that lalo would have fared any better he has the same issues if not worse than hector imo mayber with bigger responsibilities he would have shifted his approach but I don’t see it.
Lalo is a lone wolf, he loved his family but he was a one man army kinda guy, and that kinda brought him down.
…and he also lost blood to his brain
@Siegfried Sieger Well Hector was never the smartest guy on that aspect. His whole thing was controlling people with violence and fear.
@@globaros6629 which isn't smart way of running things at all as that'll come to bite you in the ass indirectly or directly
Mark Margolis has claim to have single-handedly destroyed two major cartels in movie and TV. By taking a bullet from Tony Montana he brought that empire down. Likewise by delivering the bullet to Gus' partner he created the monster who single-handedly picked apart Don Eladio's cartel. Kudos!!!

For people who care so much about their family, the Salamancas were seemingly oblivious to the extent to which that John Hopkin’s doctor could have helped Hector make a full recovery. They definitely possessed the money necessary to continue treatment, it kind of baffles me that none of them (along with the doctor) consulted one another on continued treatment.
They're probably ignorant on that, a way to explain this plot hole
When Gus learned Hector could make a full recovery he stopped it to keep him trapped in that state.
The doctor worked for gus fring.Gus told the doctor to stop the treatment
Yeah
Hector's remaining family might've been aware that if any other outside specialists who came in for any future rehabilitation he might've suffered an attack on his life.
For a character that hardly spoke in BB, he NAILED it with, "La familia es todo."
Heisenberg actually ends up being something of an accidental hero: his actions end up with the collapse of not 1, not 2, but 4 major crime syndicates: The Cartel, Los Pollos Hermanos, the Arizona Neo-Nazis, and the Blue Sky cook. He arguably did more for the War on Drugs than the DEA, in universe. Not only that, but also more impact on gangs in general than the FBI by taking out an entire state’s worth of non-imprisoned Nazis.
In addition, Walt also takes Saul's criminal network along with him. Without Saul acting as their middle-man, the career criminals of New Mexico will now have a much harder time finding work.
The more big guys you knock out the more fragmented the market comes, more people fighting for power, more violence. The war on drugs only made things worse, Heisenberg is no accidental hero either.
Following this logic, then he was also responsible for the plane crash.

I always kind of thought the moment Hector looked at Gus was almost an apology for destroying both their lives. There seemed like there was some real sadness in it. Maybe it was to shock Gus into not moving while he hammered the bell though.
I think he was like pretty sure I just won bro
Nah that was definitely a "fuck you" stare
braindead take lmao
You wouldn't show sadness to someone who killed your family. At least not Hector of all people.
It seems like there is something going on there. Gus says last chance to look at me, Hector. When he does Hector looks sad to me. Which seems to shock Gus. And not just for the fact that he finally looked at him.
That was also part of their relationship. Gus would visit and demand that he look at him for what he did to him. Over the years the act of not looking at someone will build shame.
I think the scene is better with Hector showing he had a SHRED of humanity left. He wasn't a one-note monster. To show he had a little empathy and shared some blame for starting a needless feud that cost him everything. Right before taking Gus with him! 🤣
i'm impressed by the voice the actor gave him. menacing low growl, not overstated, diplomatic and light when necessary, but never at the expense of perceived weakening of his image.
He also played a very twisted side character in Scarface, Mark Margolis knows how to give the low-speaking villain
Rest in peace Mark Margolis 😔🙏
I don’t know how people consider Gus NOT a villain. He did seriously fucked up stuff. He took his revenge out on Hector by killing ALL of his relatives, even the innocent people (if you have seen the BCS season 5 finale you know what I mean). He killed kids, and carried out seriously evil orders. He may have started out just simply a good business man but revenge poisoned him beyond the cartels actions in my opinion.
who consider? only your imagine bro
Now I understand why Hector's spanish accent is so bad, he was never supposed to speak at all. However other actors who speak spanish in the show are also not fluent in the language as they should based on their origin and connections outside of the US. I can say that Lalo and Bolsa are the only characters I can think of that when they speak Spanish it sounds believable. Other characters like Tuco, Nacho etc are born in the US so their accent makes sense for a second generation American.
I believe Hector deserves every accolade he can get. After all, he made his nephew Tuco the beloved psychopath that we all know and love.

Don hector
I am actually starting to think Hector is the only male child of Abuelita, with the other being women who birthed Lalo, Marco, Lionel and Tuco. This would explain why there are no fathers around and he became sort of a father figure for them. If the AMC spin off request is approved, I think it would be a good idea to see a spin off largely set in Mexico focusing on Gus, with Hector and Don Eladio being prominent characters in it. While they would be played by younger actors, we can easily get a flash-forward or two to the BB/BCS time line. Even when wheelchair bound, Hector was clearly a very respected man. He is perhaps the darkest character in all of Breaking Bad, even more so than Gus.
Fun FACT: he plays Ace Venturas landlord in Ace Ventura, with Ace uttering the iconic line: "Yes Satan". You'll never watch Ace Ventura the same way again!
It’s also possible that he had several brothers who were killed, along with his own son, if he had one. After all, he does say Salamanca blood. Additionally, his nephews all going by the Salamanca surname could mean that they were the sons of his brothers, since it would come first if that were the case.
@@capncake8837 yeah there is still a lot of thing we don't know about the Salamancas, they are definitely a highly respected crime family, yet there is a lot of history to explore here. Vince Gilligan is moving on to a Twilight style drama now, and I doubt it will be that interesting to be honest, a spin off about the cartels would be awesome, and unlike other spin offs, BCS is not full of plot holes and inconsistencies, so I assume this won't be either.
I felt that way about ace ventura when Jim Carey turned out to be a fucking lunatic. My parents tried to warn me, but I just brushed it off as "old fart syndrome". Especially dumb and dumber, when nature calls and cable guy. And yes......an origin story would be sick! But.....I'd swap your suggestion. Make it about the Salamancas. They're the most captivating I feel. Of course that's subjective
@@Severmore yeah a Salamanca spin off could actually work. They have likely been in the drug game since the 60s or 70s judging by Hectors age.
@@joebrat6809 here's hoping.
I'm honestly pretty surprised that Hector didn't just have Gus killed early on while he still had the high ground. Yeah, I know there would've been serious repercussions if conclusively proven that he was behind it, and he may very well have wound up frozen out of the cartel on account of it. On the other hand, though, the Salamanca family and associates seem to make up a vital part of the cartel's street muscle and whether or not they bring in a lot of money, that's a very debilitating thing to lose. The cartel clearly doesn't have unlimited field resources, since Eladio was doubtful about going to war with biker clubs when Nacho proposed it, which could imply that it'd draw bad attention, but it didn't seem like doing it would be a sure success venture either.
I just don't see the cartel going to war with the Salamancas over Gus, it wouldn't be worth the attrition, and end of the day, the Salamancas have killed for way less than the hurdle Gus represented even in the beginning.
imagine what he'd had done to people if Nacho didn't swap those pills

That Fring didn't have Hector's room wired for sight and sound is beyond me. It certainly couldn't have been that difficult, even if done surreptitiously. As this series has also surmised, Gus was extraordinary at surveillance in his capacity as a member of the Chilean secret services. Guess the story required that oversight.
Hector had some considerable plot armor throughout. He was already a feeble old man before the poisoning, but they needed the wheelchair scenes. Literally saved by the bell.

You are missing out. Breaking Bad is a great series. Hooks most people from the very first episode!
Yes, Hector cared about his family, but I think this type of caring is a bit different than what it would feel like for a regular person. He cares about his family because they are an extention of himself and his own ego - that is if you assume that he's a psychopath which I think is fair. It's like someone caring for a body part; you would do anything you could to protect it from harm and want revenge on a person who cut off your finger. That doesn't mean you have any empathy towards it.
He is a narcissist. Not a psychopath. You don't have to be a psychopath to be evil
I’m glad there’s no obnoxious music in this compare to your Gus Fring video 👍🏼
Primarily, thanks for bringing such analyses for us to think and discuss! Tough love? I wouldn't say so. Together with outstanding character of Lalo, for me, they are most "reptile" like psychopathic characters in all BB world.
