Welcome to the Heavy Spoilers show, I'm your host Paul and throughout this video we're gonna be breaking down John Wick 4. The film is packed with a number of different easter eggs and details and this scene by scene breakdown is gonna be going over it as well as the ending.
Now though you could easily think that this movie picks up right after John Wick 3 there's actually some what of a time jump between this film and the last one. Director Chad Stahelski stated in interviews that the movie happens about 8 months after the prior film and we can see this passage of time in some of the characters and location. Wick fell off the Continental at the end of Chapter 3 but his wounds are now healed and we see that this is the case with the Bowery King too. The scarrs he suffered for betraying the high table have healed up and New York itself also indicates the passage of time as well.
Chapter 1,2 and 3 happened pretty much back to back with them all taking place roughly during the spring. New York is covered in snow for this film and we also know that the elder has been replaced since the last film. This is an important motif as it shows John that all the members are themselves operating like a hydra. - Zábava

For now, that world is ancient and so well woven into the fabric of society, from the very lowest to the very highest, making it invisible to most.

You're stretching with the dragons breath segment. Dragons breath rounds have been around before the GoT tv show.
you missed the reference with the shot pattern to John at the end... the same places the Dr asked to be shot that were NON LEATHAL in previous John Wick movie... Thus making it Very likely he is still alive... After all how dose one kill death? Second there was a lot of reference to the high table needing to be taken out by Wick himself, the painting shows Libery winning over dictatorship.. not one of their Hench men ( who was noted as eaisily replaceible several times thus making Johns victory hollow indeed if he truly is dead) ... as you said take one head out some on is just as quick to replace it... Unless you kill all of them.. His family and friends are back on his side and Cain was an Obvious reference to the tables trinary... He owed no favours and should not have been called back in let alone manipulated with his daughter... John should have never have even had to "Win" his freedom as he was already free... Thus proving the tables word is now worthless and another reason why John would need to stay around to replace them... He would know that, he helped no one if he ends here knowing this Duel is by no means over and they said several times the results of this "Shake the very pillars and foundations of the table." This the would not be willing to leave anything as it was knowing it would bring their authority and very existence into question... after all the villan here was said to be a pooling of all their power and wealth thus being a perfect axanple of them and how one rule for thee and one for me is also of the tables thinking not just his.. lastly last time in the ending of three he did not escape death so much as survive, this time would be the first he faked his death therfore going underground and breaking the rules rather then play by them as he did fairly up untill the end of the third movie... thus he has now become the enemy of the table rather then the loyel dog he himself has been up untill now.. i see a parellel between serving adn the dogs asasins and himself.. that or the direcotr jsut really freeking loves dogs lol .
*I like how the high table soldiers* weren’t just simple red shirts.. the samurai, armoured triggermen held their own and one even was blocking bullets with his gauntlets.. and the guys in grey suits gave John a run for his money.
A hero’s only as good as the villains he fights
Pleasurable Agony - well.. that doesn’t really apply here.. Bill Skarsgard wasn’t that great of a villain - - im just talking about the henchmen

@@firstlast9846 Nah, I think the actor did a fine job portraying the villain as a corrupt psychopath, and ultimately, a dishonest coward. He's not a villain that poses any physical danger to the hero. He sends others to do his bidding for him. He really sold the qualities that make him a villain, in my opinion.
I wasn't a fan of Alexander's accent, but i understand what they were going for. He's supposed to represent the upper class king who thinks he knows everything, but he's actually an ignorant fool
I'm gonna have to rewatch to be sure, but it seemed to me that Caine was going out of his way not to kill anyone during the attack on the Osaka Continental. I don't think he killed anyone until he absolutely had to kill Shimazu, and he even made a point of giving him a chance to leave. So his heart was not in it at all anymore. Doing the absolute bare minimum to ensure his daughter's safety.
I agree. We're left with the assumption the group he started fighting first, he didn't kill, just incapacitated them. I felt he held out to the very last second to engage. Even with the Wick fight I couldn't help to hear Scarlet Witch say "your pulling your punches" to Hawkeye...

You are right. The fight where he killed the father he told them tell me where he is and take your daughter and go. After they first started fighting and the first stab he said go take your daughter and protect her. The father then continued to attack that led to his demise. Heck he was eating soup not taking part in most of the beginning fights until directed to get involved. So yeah he didn’t want to do this at all and gave plenty of chances.
Caine telling the Marquis to "f*ck off" made me laugh so hard I almost feel off my stool.

The whole Osaka fight was incredible, and gave me heavy Cyberpunk vibes. Hands down the best John Wick film to date.

Honestly, yeah. I got huge Cyberpunk vibes from the whole Osaka building. The style, his voice, everything. JW1 is still my favorite, but JW4 is a close second, and that's mostly due to Osaka and the fight there. That said, my favorite fight was actually the top-down view fight on his way to the church.

I noticed that during the duel John had with Caine. He shot Caine in almost the same location the doctor got shot in JW3. It’s almost as if John was letting Caine know where to hit him so that he wouldn’t die.

Caine was such a great character. I thought I wouldn't vibe with him because of how blatantly dumb it is that a blind man could be even an inconvenience, much less a threat, to John, but he was so well written and acted that I totally bought it.

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned the fact that in the overhead single take scene the music uses the same music that plays in the Red Circle Nightclub scene from the first movie. It’s a cool coming full circle moment for the franchise.

Notice that when Wick shot someone, he always went for a head shot, against Cain they were never head shot. Neither did Cain. Made me think neither was interested in killing each other but waiting for Wick to finish the Marquis and each getting their freedom.
I agree, if they'd wanted to kill each other it would've happened on the first shot.
They were counting on the Marquis's ego to show up, since he wanted to be the one to deliver the coup de grace to John Wick, thus increasing his reputation in the High Table.
As impressive as Caine’s skills are, I doubt he can get a perfect headshot with consistency. He’s still blind.

the bullets falling off the jackets is an insane detail i never would have thought off and makes the buulet proof jacket feel alittle more real, bullets dont bounce off but instead gets embedded into the jacket,and that make wick more badass cause that means he feels the pain from every bullet that hits him which is alot and he is still going. picture a cop getting hit with the vest. some fall down from the bullet impact
My cousin got shot at and broke his sapi plate in half. Even with Kevlar or steel armor. It will hurt like hell no matter what.

It happens when he the priest blasts him when he goes to get help from Katia's crew as well. They stand him up and all the shotgun pellets fall out.

I'm a 67 year old woman who watched the 4 John Wick movies this weekend, for the first time. Loved them, and loved this commentary! Especially loved the overhead filmed fight scene! I caught a few of the Easter eggs and foreshadowing while watching Chapter 4. Probably need to watch it again.

You should check out the making of John wick 1. It shows him learning how to drive the car so every scene you see John driving the car that’s really him and not a stunt double. You also hear them call the fighting style John uses “gun-fu”. Glad you love the movies. Welcome to the club. It’ll only cost you one gold coin to join the club.
Dude... I was so sad and happy for John when he asked if they could just take him home. Right after everything that he had done for his freedom and passed away (if hes dead) in peace. also when he saved the dog that got me.

Whew! So glad to hear He saved the dog...okay now I have to watch it again because I skipped most of the dog action scenes!
@@elleadolls7283 dog scenes were the highlight. John has the dogs owner dead to rights, about to execute him when he notices someone else is about to kill the dog. Instead of killing the owner, he turns and kills the person attacking the dog and runs away.
Later, the owner has a chance to kill John for $40 million but right when he has John in his sights, the dog whines and gives him puppy dog eyes and convinces him to help John instead.
So John saved the dog, then the dog saved John in return.
Did anyone else notice how as John is walking down there stairs before he "dies", that his 2 bullet wounds are in the same exact position as the bullet wounds he gave to the doctor in part 3? "Right below my floating rib" and "please try not to graze my collar bone"...

This makes me think that his "death" is ambiguous. I think that the directors even mentioned in an interview that he may or may not come back in a sequel, should it be produced.
Caine survived with almost the same wounds
John was already dying from his injuries prior to the duel Caine had to help him make up the stairs. If anything maybe we'll get a prequel showing the night of his impossible task

I personally would have hated if Akira killed Caine. He tried to spare Koji. I understand it was honor that kept him fighting but still, Caine clearly didn't want to kill him and she even seen that. I'd love to see so much more in this universe.
Military wearing watches on the inside of the wrist has less to do with reading the time whilst aiming, and more to do with preventing reflections of light off the watch face.
It's certainly primarily for the glare but the watch facing up is definitely a bonus that I'm sure is very helpful
You can also add that it protect the watch from getting bumped to rocks/branches that could crack the watch

One of the best films of the year and this is the Farewell that Wick deserves. Amazing action and drection. Hope to get a Kane Film because Donnie shined here. Can't wait for the show and Ballerina and seeing Lance's final performance with the latter RIP.

You know I highly doubt that John Wick is dead since it's been established in Chapter 3 in the Doctor scene, where you place bulletholes when you wanna make them seem realistic while also being non-lethal. You can also see this in the places where Caine and John shot eachother in the duel.
As much as I really want John to come back, this ending is really great and perfect for him, he's finally free and reunited with Helen and Daisy
I think the name and persona of John wick is dead but not the actual person I feel like for some reason he’ll have to come back but he’s not dead the people that know him as John wick is dead they already confirmed a 5th one because the 4th did so good money talks and they made plenty
I hate the idea that they'll bring him back. It was such a fitting end for him. Besides, what would he have to live for afterward anyways. He's free, but his wife and dog are dead. He doesn't have any skills suitable for civilian life.
To address the wounds he got as not being fatal, don't forget the role exhaustion plays. He had spent the whole night fighting for his life. Make someone tired enough, and wounds that would otherwise be survivable can become fatal. Some of the most brutal execution methods of antiquity operated on this principle.
@@VTdarkangel Sure. But this movie is all in all really symbolic. Many details I found in this movie were really thoughtfully placed. Such as the shot wounds. There are many reasons for me to believe that Wick is not physically dead. He might not be the main protagonist of the next movie (even though it is called JW 5 from some not so credible sources), but I think the "death" of John Wick is more symbolic than anything else. It is about the persona not the person.

Regarding Caine giving up his eyes, it may just be my head cannon, but I assumed it had to do with keeping his daughter safe but still wanting to be able to get as close to her as possible. Assuming, like Sophia, that part of the deal with getting out was “You can never see her again” which he took literally. Now, no contact was also part of the deal, but while it’s skirting the line, he can go and hear her play.
Him wearing blackout contact lenses and nonseethrough glasses each time he went to see her would have worked too)

My theory for Caine is that he lost his eyes during a particular war, and he gave them in service of his country. The assassin life came later and likely he had no one to lose, so accepting a contract that said "you take a life or we take a life" was simple - at worst they'd kill him. Then he had a daughter and now that contract is more complicated. He didn't realize he could be called back so many years later.
Why do I think this? Because he's a biblical allegory and this movie is full of them. The caravaggio painting they go by in the Subway tipped me off and then once you start to see the biblical stuff it really just pops out. This is historical and cultural in Paris, so don't take the religion part too seriously - this just narrative symmetry.
Caine is Longinus. Not Cane who killed his brother, that's a dirty trick the movie plays to subvert expectation.
Longinus stabbed christ in the liver - exactly where Caine shot John's killing blow.
Longinus used a lance - Caine, if you use the latin l instead of an i, can be anagramed to "Lance". He uses a cane that hides a sword - which are two parts to a lance. The real clincher though? Longinus was blind.
Cane after killing Abel was blessed with a long life and allowed to make a new one without threats of enemies - but Caine, in the after credits scene is attacked. Caine also calls John his brother, but Cane killed Abel due to jealousy over god's grace. He doesn't fit as Cane.
He cut John's hand just before the duel on his left hand to cover his tracks, but also, because that's one of the sacred wounds of christ.
There's more too, once you recognize the biblical allegory they're going for this film - it's everywhere. It's just foreshadowing John coming back, but also, every other character is wrapped up in it. The church they go to at the duel was made for the sacred heart of christ and was built after a war to ensure the moral center of Paris would be renewed. John chose this place and as such, he knew what its virtues meant.
Longinus was a Roman Centurion and a Pagan who converted - to me this suggests Caine's eyes were lost in a war. He says he gave them but I somehow doubt it was to the table and if it was, it was likely given in service to something more than just a murder contract. He seems so proud of it and I doubt he was coerced.
But who knows.

I noticed how the marquis sucked his teaspoon and later shoved a piece of cake with his finger, which signifies that his "nobility" is fake and that he lacks the class the title "marquis" is supposed to imply.
16:40 I loved the fact that first you can see john dont have that much experience with nunchacks so he starts it easy by just hitting with them like everybody would, and as the fight continues he keeps getting more skilled with the weapon and at the end he is making those sweet looking moves that people who knows how to handle this weapon makes. :D
Not sure if you've covered this possible link with the previous movies, but I liked the ambiguous scene at the end with Winston where he lays a hand on John`s gravestone revealing the Ruska Roma tattoo on his wrist and says, "Farewell my son." This posing the question, is Winston John`s biological father? What history does Winston have with the Roma cartel? Did he leave the family behind to run the hotel? Does the cartel run the hotel? Who is John`s mother? 🤯 Love the channel guys!
I had these same thoughts after the movie and brought it up to my wife. I havent heard anyone else mention that and I am very surprised this comment isn't higher up seeing as that would be a very important detail.

Came here for this too XD I mean, him saying 'my son' did mildly get my attention, but the way they zoomed in on the tattoo did make me go... no, he's... is Winston his father?? He is an orphan after all... It'd be kinda funny if it was true.
I don’t think Winston is johns farther but probably the man who brought John into the Roma cartel helped make him the man he was going to becomand then when winston went to the continental kept an eye on John. That’s why he’s always looked out for him. He’s more a farther figure than anything else.
It also seemed fatherly that Winston always called John Johnathon like a parent would do. But could very well just see John like a son.

Chapter 4 is bittersweet.
On the one hand, it sucks that this is the last. However on the other hand, it made a perfect character arc. Also pays homage to the "quit while you're on top" saying. Which leaves the story being told amazing & memorable for such. Vs being memorable for dragging on well past it's prime. (Looking at you Saw & Fast & Furious... lol).
Chapter 4 was the best out of all the films personally. It had all the good from 1, 2, and 3. Cranked up to 11 with some goodies sprinkled on top. Not to mention, while John himself is dead. The franchise as a whole is not. Stahelski & team did an AMAZING job fleshing out this world to allow many new & cool stories to thrive from.
And yes, the top down Dragon's Breath fight was 10/10 chef's kiss. The best action sequence in many many years. The cinematography & choreography were on point. And the fact that 90% of it was one take was the cherry on top. I've gone back to watch that scene many times over since it's pure eye candy and enjoyment.
I REALLY hope they don't pull a "Fast" and bring John back later on with some cheesy plot device just for the sake of making money. It would cheapen the story told and would be a HUGE disservice to Stahelski, Reeves, and team. We all know Lionsgate is going to try their hardest to entice it. I just hope they tell them off. Let John rest in peace with his wife.
He's not dead, chapter 5 is in production. To further clarify, John was shot in the same areas that the doctor in chapter 3 was requested to be shot.

Chapter 1; Denial.
Chapter 2; Anger.
Chapter 3; Bargaining.
Chapter 4; Depression and Acceptance.
Its funny how nobody talks about John Wick's special secret skills: immunity to high-speed impacts from cars.
All the references you mention are incredible. All the research that went into is great. Thanks for that. I loved it when I saw it even though I didn't catch many of the references. When I see it again, I'll watch it with a more enlightened perspective.

With that smirk from Laurence Fishburne at the end regarding where John is now, the glance from the dog (with the original script allegedly having the dog see John in the distance), and Lionsgate announcing John Wick 5 this morning.... I'd say there's a strong chance Wick is alive ... this "gravestone" and duel death / freedom was all so that he could have freedom from both the civilized/normal world, as well as from the Table. Thoughts?

I truly believethis film is worthy of a best cinematography nomination for Oscars and I know action movies don't get recognized or have campaigns for that but this film was visual masterclass in action and absolutely stunning to behold my jaw dropped multiple times watching this mayhem and tye level of skill on display deserves a top level award.

Great video! This may already have been mentioned in the comments, but John branding his forearm with a red hot pot will be a reference to the TV series Kung Fu. There are probably several other references to Kung Fu in John Wick 4 - the main character in the TV series was called Caine.

I always thought it was odd that Caine got 4 nines especially after John received a 'dead mans hand'. I am by no means an expert or even an amateur but I like cards and how people have found meanings behind different card combinations. Regular playing cards have a lot of similarities to tarot cards. Tarot card readings is all a bit of interpretation mixed with fakery but in one way to see getting 4 nines means "good friends". It could also mean to "review and reflect on the consequences of their actions". Could be an subtle hint/easter egg towards Caine's true inner struggle to do what he wants to do versus what the high table is forcing him to do.
My hypothesis as to why snipers don't just post themselves near staircase or cathedral for the ambush is that assassins need to claim the kill for the 40 million reward by killing John up close with witnesses.
Yeah if you shoot him like 400 yards away in a building by the time you get to his body somebody else will have claimed it or even kill you as you get close

You could be right and also it’s a movie and it wouldn’t be as interesting if somebody just sniped John from a distance and the movie just ended😂

I loved the overhead one-take scene. Had a very nostalgic vibe to it from those old top-scrolling shooter games. I also loved the Akira character: badass, a family person (like John), bound by honor, and hot.

Pretty good analysis minus one thing. Dragon's breath is a legitimate round for shotguns that has been available in America for purchase for quite some time. It was a thing long before this movie. It was pretty cool to see it used for symbolism in the film though.

I always thought that Winston was John Wicks father. I don’t know if his “Farewell, my son” is a confirmation of that or that it’s just the reference to someone he thought of a son (just something an elder would say).

I wouldn't mind if he was like it's okay if there are no more movies but atleast give reference in the wick verse that he lived and is finally living a retired life

Now, don't get me wrong. I don't wanna get my hopes up. But I just wanna point something out.
In the final scene where the King & Winston is talking, King is caring for John's dog. In the final scene, after Winston says 'Who knows?' and the camera pans to the dog who's ears perk up and turns to look in a direction. Something had got his attention. And my theory is that Winston made it possible to make everyone think John's dead, when in reality he helped John who just most likely went unconscious due to blood loss just so John can keep living just as his wife intended when leaving him the first dog. Maybe I'm getting a tad Gen Z and wishing an arc to never die, but at the same time I just enjoy spitting out conspiracy theories!
I thought the same too when I was on the theater, but the very next scene is in front of the two and no one is there, not even in the background

I was surprisingly affected by the death of Charon. Didn't realize how much I had invested in that character.
I think I noticed Caine pulling or positioning guys away from stairs or walking paths prior to knocking them out. He wanted to a valid tripping over them later.

Dragon's Breath rounds are a real thing, BTW. They're also a thing in Shadowrun, although those are obviously significantly more deadly than their IRL counterparts.
One cool thing about shotguns is that there's all kinds of crazy ammo for them. Incendiary, buckshot tracers, bolo rounds, fletchettes, titanium sabots, you name it.

I love the fact that Mr. Nobody wanted the reward for John to get to 50 million so he could buy the freedom of his dog that was 48.3 million
Well, in the end, Mr Nobody sits there to witness the lost of the 50 million dollar bounty if John is killed in the duel.
Even with the plot explained I can barely tell whats going on in this movie.
It’s fairly straight forward.. it’s literally spoon fed “We’re going here to do X so we can get to Y”

I never realized al the GOT refrences until this video, but I did notice the light behind the gold toothed poker player reminded me of the iron throne.
John seems to make the decision to sacrifice himself for Caine even before the duel started. As if these sentences would work as a hint on how they should end the duel, and Caine agreed "those who cling to death, live" but "those who cling to life, die.

I'm surprised you missed the importance of that branding scene. That was a straight rip from the story of Kane in the tv series Kung Fu, in which the branding is what allowed Kane to begin on a new phase of his journey.

Loved your breakdown man! My take is John was really the WORST FRIEND EVER! From having a beloved friend die protecting him and everyone even linked to him suffers or dies up until the final moment where he involves his best friend into a deadly duel to the death.
That's why you never carry pictures or display them in common areas of your home & never at work ... just saying

I think the subway scene with the song, is a call back to his Matrix 3 days, where he tries to escape and needed Trinity to strike a deal to save him. So the song, is that he is in fact waiting for his love that he never forgot.
Also Caine giving up his eyes and being the anti-hero is similar to Angel Eyes in Good Bad Ugly films. He represents a guardian Angel on Wick’s shoulder as well for most of the film. Hence Angel Eyes.

also, when John goes to visit the Elder in the desert at the beginning, the tent is missing--as if representing John ripping away the cover of the High Table itself. The Elder sits among the tent poles, exposed.

There is one detail that I liked. Before the duel, Caine cuts John´s right hand forcing Jhon to shoot left handed. That´s an important advantage to Caine.

I think it has more to do with paying debt than Caine having advantage. If you remember, the same thing happened to the leader of Ruska Roma in Chapter 3, when she helped John because he had a ticket. The high table punished her with blade stab through the hands. And also, Wick says to Caine "we're even now" after he stabbed John through his hand. But it can very well be the combination of both.
