How Nacho Overcame Every Salamanca - Better Call Saul

  • Throughout Better Call Saul, one of Nacho’s main obstacles was the Salamancas. He had a string of bad luck in that each time he got rid of one, another appeared, allowing him to never truly feel safe. In total he had to overcome five different members of the Salamanca family. I thought it’d be interesting to look at how he approached each.

He played Gus right too. After the botched Lalo assassination, Nacho was a dead man. Anyone who catches him, takes his life. So Nacho accepts his own fate, but he doesn't accept his father's fate. Gus meanwhile shows distain for Nacho. So Nacho speaks to Gus on the phone, man to man, and lays out his terms. He gets Mike to vouch for that, and turns himself in. And in the end, he pretty much sells the fact that Gus is innocent, and goes out like a man. He knew there was no saving him, but he did accomplish his series long need to protect his dad. And Gus learned something from it too. Gus decided to take Mike's advice on fear not being a reliable motivator. Which is how he played with Walt and Jesse, until both pushed their luck too far.

I liked these explanations except for how Nacho won Lalo over. Lalo only show of true admiration for Nacho was when Nacho retrieved the drugs from the stash house. What seemed odd was that appeared to be an irrational thing to do. Would be much easier to just cut the losses, but there was more to it. There would have been repercussions if the drugs were found, Lalo knew that immediately and was allready thinking about killing the two subordinates in the car with them, disposing the bodies, replacing them with capable people, the stree of having to wonder what the cops had learned, etc...When Nacho stepped up and asserted himself with to resolve the situation with Bravery, that's when Nacho earned Lalos respect. We see it played out when Lalo is betrayed by Nacho and Lalo returns to kill the entire hit squad that was sent to kill him. It's not that Lalo is just intelligent or charismatic. Lalo is Brave. In the business they are in, they see many cowards, Lalo respects Mike as an adversary for the same reason. Mike is intelligent and resourceful but more important to Lalo is that Mike displays Bravery by remaining calm and coming up with a bold plan to lose Lalo when he was tailing him. It one thing to be smart, and charismatic, but also to be bold, shows the true characteristics of someone with true potential in life. A capable man of destiny. Lalo sees that in Nacho and is genuinely pleased with who Nacho is as a person when Nacho sneaks into the stash house. Nacho was allready useful to Lalo as a 2nd, but when Nacho proved he also had balls and conviction, that cemented Lalos admiration. I hate how Nacho’s story ended. Nacho deserved more. Michael Mando did such a wonderful job portraying this character. His appearance was that of a bad ass gangster, but his actions were that of a naive young man without guidance (due to his father giving up on him and the absence of a mother). Once he met mike, they built this father and son relationship, but again…mike wasn’t able to talk his pseudo son out of his behaviors. You could tell Nacho’s death broke mike’s heart.

Nacho had no flaws but only one thing holding him behind that being his father.
He smartly convinced all that Salamancas be it tuco, hector, lalo or even iladio.
He wanted to leave that world of cartels and wanted to start a better life but in the process he got used by gus fring.
And him making hector wheelchair bound proves how frustrated he was with Salamancas.
He was smart, powerful and calm.
The only flaw he might have had was he didn't use to think that much when it was about his father and that is where he got used by others.
For hector he was just another guy helping in business in us fronts. For lalo he was just a guy who worked with tuco.
For Gustavo he was just a sacrificial lamb. And despite being used so bad he managed to protect his father and ruined the Salamanca family by hospitalising hector. Helping assasins to kill lalo's family which eventually led to lalo's death.
But he had the fate of gus fring's in his hand.
He had the fate of both Salamancas and gus fring in his hand.
He could have prevented entire breaking bad. Just imagine how much overpowered his character was.
Just imagine if he had said that it was chicken man who hired assasins what would have happened??
There wouldn't be any Gustavo fring in breaking bad.
But he chose to destory salmancas because of his frustrations.
And that is why he was the most unluckiest character in this series alongside howard.

We've never seen them as mad as when he calls them that, the only other time that might even be close is when the one twin is crawling towards Walter with no legs. But they saved Nacho's life on the verge of death, literally gave him salamanca blood in order to survive, and then when they went to get revenge for him he risked his life in return to try and save them- earning their respect. He was like an honorary family member to them- and his final words were calling them psychotic and saying he hates them looking them straight in the eyes.

The best part of Nacho's character for me is his patience and ability to keep cool and collected in the most dire situations, throughout the entire show. His ability to read the Salamancas proves his intelligence is great, but his perseverance from season 1 to his ultimate end is what highlights him specifically. He's a mix of Jesse and Hank to me, where Jesse was the character with the worst luck--whenever anything seemed good to him, it was ruined immediately after. He was the punching bag of the show, no mercy. Hank's ability to play through difficult situations greatly reflects Nacho, especially since he's also the only other person to defeat a multitude of the Salamanca family (Hank - 3, Jesse - 1, Gus - 1 (or 2 depending how you look at it)). Nacho's journey throughout the series was definitely the most tense, respectable, and heartbreaking within the BrBa universe imo. His goal was innocent and lighthearted, but his means toward it were bloody and painful. Each time he took down his main target, something else stepped in to pull him back into the game, and that was the circumstances of Gus and the Salamancas. However, throughout all of this, although he felt tormented and defeated each time a new conflict arose, he was able to read the situation to find any possible way to keep moving forward with his goal. Whether it was Hector watching over his shoulder, Gus scraping him from the ground like a chained dog, the twins' bloody urges for vengeance, or Lalo's cunning and charisma, he found a way to sneak past it all, playing them each like a fiddle. It's as you said, he won every battle, but was constantly losing the war to reinforcements. To finally win his war, he needed to give the ultimate sacrifice in defeating his final battle, which was Gus' unpredictability and horrific intentions towards his father. He realized that there truly was no way out of the game, which is what his story is ultimately meant to depict. An innocent goal to protect the only person he has a loving connection, and his wishes to be there with him when set free are impossible due to his circumstances, and regardless of his bloody attempts to find his way out, another unforeseen obstacle will always obstruct his path toward achieving it, hence why his conclusion is the one he chose. His intentions were as pure as a graceful blue flower, in the midst of a dry desert, surrounded by a thwart of twisted branches following unpredictable paths, and lying beside it, a bloody shard of glass, covered in dust.

It would also open up a lot more options in the aftermath of the shootout then running away, in the case where Lalo survived, he would be among the first to know had he stayed, and if he did perish in the assassination, Nacho could leave without fear of being hunted down.

I also think even if Gus' hit men did the job right it would look weird with Nacho having survived or not being at the crime scene, especially because even though Lalo pretends to be dead, everyone immediately suspects Nacho so i think his death was inescapable despite his best efforts. Mike was always in positions to be a mentor/friend/fatherly figure to multiple characters and each time he failed - his son, Nacho, Werner, Jesse. He’s one of the most tragic characters on the show I think because he never fully redeems himself as the father he wish he could’ve been to save his son because like Nacho, his choices, regardless of them being good/smart/calculated, he never could “win”. He could never save these people but each time he felt connected to someone, he would try to help them make “the right choice” but it was never enough.

This is a great parallel to Gus killing Eladio, having to drink first to show he's not poisoning him, mirrored here by Lalo almost blind trust in Nacho, either because he thought he was untouchable... What makes him so appealing is that even though he is a main character material, he has believable shortcomings that intersects and even slightly undermines his good qualities. For example: he is a good planner, but his plans never account on events that would follow if that plan failed or succeeded. Other "believable" main characters from other shows would have bad qualities that barely even tangent their good side, like "Oh this character is talented at many things but he is haunted by his past / a braggart / etc."

In effect, he destroyed a lot of the Salamanca family, just being less equipped than Gus, although unlike Gus, he never planned from the beginning to destroy Hector. And the Salamancas never even learned that Nacho got Tuco imprisoned, because if they did, they might investigate Mike, and notice that he works for Gus. (Although Hector and the twins would recognize Mike from the Tuco incident, only Lalo saw him working for Gus.) It almost seems like Nacho was working for the Alvarezs, with a long plan to take down the Salamancas. The last step would be taking out the twins when they come for him.

Honestly one of the only things I can say genuinely frustrates me about this series is the way that nacho got caught.
Gus hires the "best" hitmen that he can possibly get his hands on (which are probably the best hitmen in the area period) and yet they act like bumbling fucking idiots the entire time while they're trying to kill lalo, literally acting like they've never had to clear a house or anything like that ever before.
    Let me elaborate:
They shoot the young guy in the kitchen (can't remember his name now) while lalo is standing literally right there, first of all, why don't they just... yknow... keep shooting? There's obviously TWO guys there, so just shoot until they're both dead.
Second of all, you're telling me they could see clear enough into it that they could see there was a person there and shoot him perfectly center mass in what I can only assume to be the heart with how fast he died, but they can't see through the window well enough to see lalo hiding around the corner or at least see him move around it after the young dude gets shot?
Then they go into the kitchen to clear it, first of all, why are both of the guys that are going inside to clear it aiming at the same doorway?
Second of all why is the guy going around the kitchen counter like that? He had all the room in the world to clear that corner and he decides to take the tightest angle possible with a goddamn rifle like he's just asking to get stabbed or worse.
And even if he's going around the kitchen counter that way, close to the corner, why isn't his rifle pointed at the corner? That's obivously the only place in the room someone could be hiding and still be out of sight, so why's he aiming at the doorway that his buddy is already covering?
Then he finally gets the grease thrown on his face, and instead of just shooting blindly in front of him, HE DECIDES TO MAG DUMP THE FUCKING CEILING.
First of all, you don't just shoot your entire magazine in any direction just because you got hurt or even severely injured, you just don't cramp up like that.
Second of all he KNOWS where it came from, he SAW LALO BEFORE THE GREASE GOT THROWN ONTO HIM, YOU'RE A PROFESSIONAL, EVEN IF YOU CAN'T SEE JUST SHOOT IN HIS FUCKING DIRECTION, YOU'RE GONNA HIT S O M E T H I N G.
The rounds going through the wall and maybe hitting someone on the other side is also a non issue as the other room has clearly not been entered by friendlies yet anyways, and the walls are thick enough and made out of sturdy enough material to stop most any round anyways.
Disregarding even all of this let's say lalo pulls all of this off without even so much as catching a stray round from two guys emptying an entire magazine in his general zip code.
Why do they send two guys into the tunnel? Why two? It's not like if he's waiting at the end the second guy's gonna be able to do anything the first one can't already do, they're still in a tunnel barely big enough to crawl through.
Lastly (I think) the guy guarding the entrance of the tunnel.
    Come on.
    Really?
He's just casually fucking standing there, and even says something to give away that he's in there, you don't have guys maybe securing different parts of the house that are on alert? Also, for all you know there could still be more armed people around the compound, so why are you casually standing there, not even close to ready in case a threat shows itself.
I'm really sorry for the massive rant, but it infuriates me so much that a show so well written telling a story that I got so massively involved in uses some of the laziest writing I've seen to start the "death march" of an arguably main (and inarguably very beloved) character and actor.
There were 1000 ways they could've done this better, and I have to assume the episode wasn't written or directed by vince himself because he would've never let something like this slip through.

I had similar thoughts on this episode. I don't mind the fact that Lalo outsmarted the entire group, but the squad felt way too sloppy. I would have been okay with this had they been clearly unprofessional hitmen hired to make a messy scene, but they were set up as tactical elites just to bumble their way through the house. I was constantly bothered by the fact that soldiers that were supposed to be watching other perimeters usually looked as if they were idle, and were almost always facing the wrong way.

I like to think lalo wasn't fooled by nacho, he always suspected nacho to a degree, we can see him laughing reading about the arson in the news because he knew gus burnt his own restaurant and we can see him awake outside when nacho was going for the door.

Everyone in BB and BTS who died lost because their weakness got better of them. For Walt, it was his ego in the way he got careless by the end and left the notebook in plain sight. Gus lost for similar reason of ego, that is, his hatred for Salamancas and Hector especially. Mike underestimated Walt.
The reason Nacho lost was because of his dad. He knew if he just escaped they would get him and by doing what he did, he ensured his safety. Yes, if mercenaries got Lalo and everything else went according to plan, it would be ok, but it didn't. And Nacho could still save himself. He just chose not to.
