  • Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad have a sizeable cast of charismatic good guys and bad guys who can charm your pants off and blow your skull open at the same time. Lalo Salamanca, Hank Schrader, Gus Fring, Walter White - they all fit the mould - but the one who really embodies it is none other than Cartel Boss Don Eladio Vuente, a character so powerful and influential that he has barely appeared in 5 episodes over the course of two separate TV shows, and yet his presence looms heavy over both of them, once you get to know him. But who exactly is this guy? How did he get where he is today? Is there a real-life inspiration for him? And how does he figure into the wacky Gilligan-verse? We’re here to answer all those questions and more, this is Don Eladio’s Origins - Explored.

It's pretty amazing that Don Eladio managed to stay alive as a boss for 20+ years... I like to think of it as Gus secretly looking out for the Don, taking care of the Don's enemies covertly just so Gus can have the pleasure of killing the Don himself.

Not surprising as he seemed to have a mixture of ruthlessness but charisma and I'm guessing he was in a better position than the Salamancas from the jump so they knew they couldn't play with him. Even Gus knew better as if he got killed too early a probably more ruthless leader would have stepped up making it worse.

The fake smiles, the lowerd heads, even Hector knew his place and when he had to be silent. "The Greek" comes from Don Eladio's name and he is likely part Greek. There are Greek Mexicans no different than Greek Americans. The Greek word for Greece is Ellada. Eladio is likely a Spanish-ized version of that (though the Spanish name for Greece is Grecia.) because double-l is pronounced y in Spanish and you wouldn't give a man a name ending in "a".
He's probably not fully Greek, since his last name is Vuente.
Mark Margolis was also in Scarface, by the way. It's slightly interesting that in that film he was going to set off a car bomb that would have killed some innocent kids, but Tony killed him first. Then in Breaking Bad he finally got to set off his bomb.

As much as Eladio was a powerful cartel don, I think the reason he was able to remain in power for a long time was because the Salamanca family provided the muscle. Lalo mentioned to Gus that while Gus had trucks to deliver the goods, it was the Salamancas who provided the protection. The Twins alone could have easily wiped out Eladio and his gang if Hector wanted to. The thing is everyone was blended into the system and they were making good money so all was fine, until Gus and Hector got into a little private feud. That was where everything came crashing down.

The biggest mystery to me was why Hector never tried to kill the Don himself. Everything was there Hector would be defiant against orders he given. Hector said his family was the reason Don lived in his mansion but was ignored. Hector felt don's decisions could hurt the business and put everything including his family in jeopardy. Considering all these things idk why Hector did not take actions to take over as he never even seemed to fear or respect Eladio even proclaiming himself as the cartel.

I think that would have everything to do with the rest of the Cartel? The Juarez Cartel was fár bigger then just the Salamanca's. Hector was mostly trying to operate on a line from Juarez to Albequerqey, yet the Cartel was smuggling coke, al lthe way from Columbia, which means they had a lót more branches.
Hector would be far too ruthless and savage to be a Cartel Overlord like Eladio. Hector would quickly have his own Dons go against him, the way Hector handled things.
