It's been a while! With the Covid 19 lockdown, I haven't been able to get a lot of work done on Sapiens. In this video I explain why, and talk about future plans.
In Sapiens, evolve your primitive hunter gatherers through thousands of years of technological advancement. Feed, protect and grow your tribe, build towns and industry, and advance through the ages in this first person civilization building god game for PC. Play with your friends in co-operative or competitive multiplayer, all on a procedurally generated planet larger than Earth.

The garden and stairs look really good 👀👀👀
Agreed
Yayy! Happy to see you back and sounding well
Thank You :) yes, all good, very happy to be working on the game again.
Dave with the majic is back!
I think you should add objectives, such as:
Discover farming!
Domesticate an animal!
Construct watercraft!
Discover bronze!
Build a pyramid!
And when you complete each objective, you get a reward, such as a building unlock or some resources.
And also, buildings should change depending what environment they're in:
A pyramid placed in the desert would become an Egyptian pyramid, but one in the rainforest would become a Mayan pyramid.
And also a little easter egg where Aliens come visit you, your people's reaction changes depending on when they visit.
I see a lot of sandbox survival games use this. Although this would work, I’d find it really interesting if an alternative to encouraging progression was used
I like the idea of the game having no objective, so it's sort of like, do whatever. Like the game kenshi
That’s so odd, I was just thinking about this game when I went for a walk yesterday...
About 3 months ago I binge watched all your devlogs and I love them, I love the style and how professional you look. I have a lot of questions about the game, here is one of them: what is the deepest you can dig at the moment? Keep up the great work!
Will there be thick forests with predators?
I'd like to see dense forests with predators adapted to that environment
I love the idea of being able to build great pyramids by making lots of quarries, I can't wait to see 100+ sapiens carrying blocks!
Welcome back Dave. Glad to hear you and your family is healthy. Stay safe and looking forward to seeing more.
Your garden looks amazing. Thought I was watching “Self sufficient me” for a minute there. I’m building a garden bed and trying out hydroponics myself.
What did you do in Corona time? OH I build a staircase and build a beautiful garden what did you done?
Me : yes
Ok... so you took a break from Sapiens just to play Sapiens IRL.
I approve this 👌🏼
Wow welcome back Dave! This game and the engine behind it is so amazing and it's great that you keep coming back to it, I hope you can have a release you are happy with! Quarantine has had the opposite effect on my game dev for Blobiverse, it's given me a lot more time to work on devlogs and AI behind the game… but I know not everyone can be so fortunate. 😅 GL man!
Great to see another video again
What a great garden! Lockdown time well spent :) Glad you are back working on Sapiens again though!
Awww shit, my favourite indie dev is back, fuck yeah! Those stairs are looking good, same with the garden!
Really odd, I’ve been checking back on Discord nearly daily, but not today. And then CZcams alerts me to the video... Anyway, great you are back and looking forward to the next months.
One idea for metals and minerals is adding something like a prospectors pick to see which areas have what below ground resources and potentially how close (like trace amounts, small nuggets, ect, with bigger things meaning closer), but that would really depend on bigger choices like if metals will be uniform throughout the map or even the frequency of deposits and how many different types of resources.
Overall the game looks like it will be amazing, and I will definitely buy and enjoy it if my pc has good enough specs. Im glad you made the best of a hard time and improved your living environment because it can make a big difference in wellbeing
I’m excited for all the different vegetation and food sources, but please make them localised and not too easy to collect. I think that kind of thing adds so much novelty to a game, so it sucks when you can see it all in the first hour.
Can’t believe you went from blockheads to this, still play the game. Good job!
I loved seeing the work you have done in your garden, thanks for showing us!
The handaxe was used for a lot of thing in the prehistoric but for digging i think it would make more sense to use antler pickaxes. Antler was used to make a lot of tools like harpoons and pickaxes and it would give you a cool new animal to hunt.
Oh wow, you implemented digging!
That's cool as you could add mining with it. Resource like Iron could maybe unlock the next 'stage' in tech
That garden looks amazing! Great work!
Glad to hear you took a break! Gardens looking good Dave.
Great video, loved the stairs, great to see you build ingame and real life, lol. Hope you and your family are safe and healthy
Great to have you back Dave!
In case you need help on the content side of things, dont hestitate to contact me.
(10 yrs of experience in Blender, 6+ yrs Gamedev, worked professionally)
depending on the amount of help you could consider my help as donation to the game .
Great video as always :) Loved the garden & staircase - more of that please
excited to see the patch notes on that garden
Maybe you could follow some other popular city builders where placing a building automatically adds tasks to dig or fill the terrain to create a flat area for it, I believe they did that in the settlers games and it worked pretty well. I also think it’s quite realistic as it’s what people have needed to do in real life with leveling out and re shaping terrain to make it suitable for whatever they’re building and they’ve been doing it even with very basic tools all through history.
Frozen steps are going to be nice.
Great work! Here’s some ideas: Rivers with boats that you can sale along, raiders that attacking your settlement, city walls to keep out raiders, fishing and weapons
Was just checking the channel earlier today wondering where you had been! so excited to see a new video!
Glad to have you back, and that gardens looking nice!
I've missed these, welcome back!
Your videos make so excited every time I see them in my feed. Thanks for the great content!
glad you're back and your family's well, looking forward to seeing more updates
Glad you're alright and the garden looks amazing!
I was just thinking yesterday my favorite dev blog didn't upload. And you did yay.
Great to see you are back Dave, stay safe!
I just discovered this today, this is amazing
That garden looks dope, and those stairs look very professionally made. I hope you come to the dev process with renewed feelings and motivation :)
Love your garden Dave
Few suggestions:
It would be really cool if biomes were a thing and also several other bodies of land and water(such as mountains containing ores to advance the game)
Tree generation needs to be reworked so that they form forests instead of being so spread out
Weather should really have stronger effects so the game’s more challenging as right now nothing is really trying to kill you
This is a really cool looking game
Welcome back Dave :)
Awesome! Welcome back! :D
Glad to see you are back again! Got me worried for a sec :)
I understand very well that sometime, you need to take time off ! Anyway, seeing a new devlog was worth instant like for me !
Welcome back, we missed you
I didn't read the whole title before clicking and I thought this would be a video about the future of the human race, but this is good too
Thanks for the update 👣
Keep making these videos please they are very good ! :)
Wow magic Dave
Woot! Glad you're alive
Good looking staircase
Welcome back!
He's back!
I am glad you took a bit of time to yourself, everyone needs it. Keep up the good work, but take breaks tho.
Dope staircase mate
It's done when it's done, absolutely agree. Really looking forward to it nevertheless.
Welcome back.
Nice!
good tosee you again
Love it bro! Kia kaha
Cool garden
Whoohooo you're alive!
Welcome back! Super jealous of your garden. The game is looking really good, can’t wait to give it a jam! You mentioned a while back that you have made most of the game use a script engine for flexibility in modding, are you considering to include this in an early beta at all? Or would that be longer term? Would love to have a bit of a tinker
I've been hoping to see another Sapiens video in my news feed for ages, so happy to see you're back! Still, I think you made the right call helping out with your family. Great garden and stairs too.
Hey, regarding the stuff you said at the very beginning( about working on a large project while having a job). I was struggling with some similar stuff, I am an university student and the schedule gets pretty tight. I will try to describe my situation and how I overcame that and perhaps it will help somebody. Basically I had this problem where I was unable to code for JUST few hours. If I sat coding, I could spend 6,8,10,12 hours until I got the stuff done. The reason for that is that I was keeping all the thoughts about how to solve the problem in my head and I had this fear that if i take a break now, I will forget all of that until tomorrow, so the progress(basically all the tries and errors) will be lost. So what I did was quite simple and you might hear the same from dozen of game developers, but trust me, it really does help. So what is it? Write your thoughts down. Lets say you are working on an enormous project. You pick a fairly large system to work on and before starting working on it, write down the subpart you are working on(that way if you don't finish the system you have written down the part you were last working on). Next, whenever you encounter a problem - write it down before starting to solve it( that way if you won't find a solution, you will know where exactly in the subsystem you left). And last and most important, write down all your thoughts that you have during the work. I will go more in depth about the last part since it is the most important. If you work on task A and the you get the idea that it would be cool to add some small feature, you might want to implement it right of the bat without finishing what you were working on(now if there will be some difficulties with the small feature you wanted to quickly implement, you will get distracted from initial task). So right those ideas down. All of them, doesn't matter how easy and small it is. At the end of your working time frame, even if you wont finish your system, you will have a fairly decent plan for your next sit (full of both small and larger tasks). And that way every time you work on smth, even if it wont have that much practical results, you will build a larger game plan that will also help you plan larger mechanics for future. Sorry for taking so long. Hope that somebody will find it usefull! Good luck with your projects!
I wondered when you was going to post next.. i had to watch other devlogs to keep me going but it felt like cheating. Glad the kids and wife are well and you enjoyed some time off.
moar... MOAR !!!!
If we're talking primitive primitive, a digging stick would have been commonplace!
Cool story bro
I love you.
6:11 I dont know why but this sound sounds the same as a car door beeing closed
I hate trying to code something, waking up, going back to the code to finish it, and having 0 clue what I did the night before
Commenting code helps! :)
How well will underground bases and tunnels work with your plans for the digging system?
never
I've got a question sir, if you dig a hole next to a body of water, is the hole gonna get filled with it?
Also sweet looking garden you've got there, nice to see you back ;p
man... I wanna make my own staircase too. Now I just need a slope.. xD
Wait are u from NZ??? wow thats awesome XD
You said you wanted to smith and stuff .To do that you need quarries and stones first integrated in game
Yes, finally a video.
Genetic mutation and evolution might be interesting..
Trees in the game make no sense, to me. I think trees should be placed closer together in pretty defined tracks of land while leaving huge patches of tall grasses. in the distance the forests should change the ground polygons to the colors of the leaves. Imagine what a forest fire would look like if realistic smoke plumes where in the game.
Was Blockheads made while working a regular FT job(evenings and weekends)? Any advice for someone working FT as a software engineer but would like to make games, even larger games?
I worked on Blockheads full time too. The only real game that I have made and managed to release part time was the original Chopper for the iPhone, but that was a port from the Mac version, so even then it was a mostly technical challenge, and I didn't need to keep my head in the right space. It's really really hard to finish anything substantial if you can't dedicate enough hours every day to it.
Dave Frampton dang /: it’s interesting you brought up the working PT verses FT in this months video, I was literally on a walk this evening thinking about scope and then got notified about the video and watched it :). I am not married + no kids so maybe it is possible but even then I question if it would really be. My only problem is I’m not that interested in smaller mobilish type of games (as far as making them goes).
If it’s a good source of food, it’s been selectively bred by people. Ik it might not be best for recognisability, but do you plan on using wild plants/animals as models?
first mod should be to give the sapiens hugely hairy armpits, so they have trouble getting through doorways etc
Sapiens modding community discord is a thing, I’ll pass it on
Hello good evening, how could I contact you directly? I can't find any email, and by discord he won't let me send him private messages. Thank you
What country do you live in that your kids are already back to school? (I live in the U.S. and I'm still learning from home).
How far will the civilization advance in Sapiens?
Since your adding more advanced tools, could you add it so you can make more complex houses?
I dont even like this genre but this is an exception, like I hate turned based RPGs but still play alot of divinity 2
when are predators added, maybe try pack hunting wolf-like or hyena carnivores and solitary bear-like or tiger ones
and every ecosystem has different predators and or prey, and possibly the pack hunting carnivores could be tamed unlike the solitary ones, like what happened with wolves
I'm a developer. Tell us more about how the Lua mods will work please!
Is he making this with unity??
No, mines?
No modern style mines, no. To keep the engine simpler and also keep camera controls easier I decided against having caves or overhangs in the terrain. For mining it shouldn't matter too much, you just need to dig down from the surface to find ores, as would have been done in those times. It's a shame that there won't be caves for shelter or exploring, but it's a necessary compromise to keep things simpler and help me to actually finish making this game.
What is the point of a 1.3x earth size world if I'm going to micromanage everything to the point where farming works by planting each tree, if the game is marketed for its huge playable area then that should be considered in gameplay, I always thought I will manage a 500+ village or city or something like that, trading with other villages, wars ... etc, but from what I can see it looks like we are not going to even have to play in 10% of that huge awesome world, so what is the point of a huge world? is my assumption wrong?
The world is effectively infinite, it's really no different than a standard procedurally generated infinite world (like Minecraft), except that there is a little more realism when it comes to things like climate or weather, and how the sun/stars/seasons etc all work. It also makes the starting placement choice more interesting, and has a number of other benefits too. In the future your sapiens might be able to travel further too, and it allows for some interesting possibilities with mods.
Where are you that you can actually go back to school??
nullschool brought me here.
(jk, lol)
