The game is really starting to come together with lots of refinements in the gameplay and UI. I've also been working on the sapien models and animations, and in this video I go into some specifics of how the models have developed over time, what I've learned, and how they are implemented in the game engine.
In Sapiens, evolve your primitive hunter gatherers through thousands of years of technological advancement. Feed, protect and grow your tribe, build towns and industry, and advance through the ages in this first person civilization building god game for PC. Play with your friends in co-operative or competitive multiplayer, all on a procedurally generated planet larger than Earth.

no way, new Sapiens devlog?? & its almost 20m long!? Have I somehow forgotten the date of my own birthday?
Now it's your turn for a new video 🙃
You're on every cool ass youtube thing I swear bro
oh, the grilled cheese meme guy created a channel, cool...
jk jabrils, my favorite underrated youtuber
Will you incorporate AI via lua ? :)
I am incapable of expressing just how excited for this game I am!
Same here!
Used to play Blockheads and found out you were now doing this! It looks awesome and I'm so glad you've moved on to bigger and greater things.
It would be cool if mammoth hunting gave you more than meat. I mean, it's a high-risk endeavor, so raising the reward is also good. Also, historically, pre-industrial peoples used everything on an animal like that, so it should realistically give lots of other resources. Hide for clothes, tents, bags (e.g. for increasing how much a sapiens can harvest before having to bring it back to a storage area). Bone and tusk ivory for all kinds of tools, including blades, spear points, and fishhooks. Hair for mattresses, for spinning into fiber (though you have alpacas for that too...). Intestine for making waterproof items, waterskins, sausage casings. Mammoths are full of lots of great stuff!
I always drop everything when a Sapiens video comes out! Amazing to see the progress, been watching since the start and you've come so far! I'm loving the look of the pine trees!
That little tune at the beginning of every devlog always brings a smile to my face
these devlogs help me keep track of time, every time a new one releases I know a few months have passed since the last one
Been watching for years, so glad (and yet it feels weird it's so close) to playing this game
Same
Amazing progress man. If you can, I think you should add some kind of LOD for the far away trees. Maybe you could pre-render a 2D image of each tree type, and paste them in a empty 2D plane and have that be the LOD for the far away trees, like in the mountains?
agreed! the far away mountains and landscape looks a bit barren atm
Since Age of Empires/Mythology are some of my favourite games ever, I'd love to see some war mechanics added to your game ! I think that it could be an amazing VR RTS game.
this game with vr compatibility would be so cool!
@@bentleyreynolds8577 He already got it to work but idk if it’s ready yet
So happy to see another video! Cant wait for this game
14:38 when you started talking about getting to know the sapiens better it gave me the idea of maybe adding individuality to each sapien, earlier in the video you also said you were working on clothing and such, maybe you could customize different sapiens with different clothes, trinkets, or body paint. It's just an idea so you have more personality to each sapien. Instead of seeing a random sapien collecting apples you'd be like oh that's "sapiens name" with her blue body paint and a necklace made from flowers
This is awesome. I’d love to see if you’re able to get trees and other objects to render even further in the distance to make the mountains not look so bland, because I know when you move closer they appear. Maybe you could implement a feature that turns models into 2D sprites so you have low quality renders of objects showing up where they should be
Looking great, thanks for the update
Another great devlog! So cool to see the history of the models and how far they've come.
Looking really good, love the technical detail in this one :)
It's been so lovely seeing you develop this for the 2 years I've been following it. I can't wait for the early access; keep up the great work!
So happy with the update!! Thank you so much, I love your work and your world!!!! Ideas are endless take your time and make it yours!!!

Im so excited!!
ugh i can't wait for it to be finished
Will the blockheads ever receive any updates? Altough a few people play it, if you update it im sure the game could be revived
Game looks pretty cool!
He's alive!
Would it be worth making a small animation preview app, made with your engine, so you can easily check them without starting up the entire game? Maybe even some suite of small applications, depending on how many things you would want to check. If your game is pretty fast to just boot into, I'm not sure if that would be a good idea or not. Seen similar ideas for using particles, like a particle building tool so you can view everything and just export it or open a code view to copy it over.
The load times are pretty fast, usually < 10 seconds between changing an animation and seeing it in-game. It's not perfect, but it's workable. It might not be a bad idea though to add a hot key to just reload the models/animations. And yeah, if the load times were much longer something would definitely need to be done.
@@majicDave Even something like a hotkey to open a separate panel wouldn't be too bad of an idea. It would be nice for when the game becomes bigger and the times increase. Performance is sounding very nice at the moment, so it would probably be a backlog thing, unless you wanted to view only the animation / models. It really depends on your flow and how you want to view things.
The soundtrack gives me Finding Nemo vibes. Love it.
I just can’t get over how good this looks, and doing all solo. Damn. Any pointers on good resources for implanting global illumination like you have? Would love to mess with it in my engine! I think you also said something a long time ago about proper monitoring color settings, good resources on that ?
Luuking guud!
Why aren't you using inverse kinematics?
will you have The Blockheads available on release of Sapiens? I want the Blockheads free on steam
Actually many old games had different parts for each limb, funny how you also did this
Okey yeah that's the first video i am watching from you and this game but I think I will play it. But I have a question is there a Comeback or something else planned for The Blockheads ? Like your projects :)
finally something more technical XD
What are your thoughts on using visual studio code for a multi-year project like this? Is it flexible enough for basically anything? Or is it more just the best balance of free-to-functionality?
It's fantastic. The VSCode terminal is the only thing I'm still not happy with, as it's slow and can't handle multiple rapidly updating log files well. For actually editing though, it's just great.
Maybe you could add like traits/genetics for example like some sapiens could be fast and their children would also be fast some could last longer with no food some could just be average some could have fast growing hair or be weak or she or something
Imagine this world in Transport fever 😬
😊👍
For how long have you been programming and how did you learn all this?
When is the release date, and it can only be played on PC?
It’s a big game
Are you going to add other kinds of food? If so what might they be? If I could recommend somethings I would say mushrooms, corn, tomatoes beans, peppers and millet. I also wanted to ask if chickens give eggs.
is this game made with lua only?
It's a C++ engine, with Lua used to implement most of the Sapiens-specific game (using LuaJIT), both developed together. So at the moment the entire game and engine is roughly 50% Lua, 50% C++.
what language / engine is this game coded?
"If you want to be expert at that, you're watching the wrong video." OMG, I died laughing. I'm a rigger/animator.
What if mammoths could only be found in certain regions / biomes of the world? Perhaps other regions could have different animals / threats to replace them. I’m not too sure if mammoths would roam across deserts.
Will Sapiens be available on Geforce Now?
You ever considered adding blockheads to PC?
I think arbitrarily limiting sapiens to 5 roles is a bad idea. I think Rimworld does a great job in this regard allowing you to prioritise what roles each colonist does, also, some colonists have traits that prevent them from doing certain roles which could be something to look into.
8:57 pointy bum
You’re alive!
(Just kidding)
If updating stats every time something changes gets too intensive, you could instead update the stats (check for a change or send them to a client) on a regular interval, perhaps adjustable in server settings
individual sapiens can only do 5 types of tasks? why not a skill sheet that results in penalties and bonuses to task time / efficiency? it could be partially inheritable from parents :)
as for previewing your animations - what about a a blender script that adds X number of in-between frames between every existing keyframe? then just undo when you're done previewing.
game look and interface are REALLY coming into their own now, looking fantastic and intuitive, and wonderful to hear that you now have spoilers to hide. keep on crankin away!
3:44 My fiancee called him "Pointy Hagrid." lmao
Bring back the blockheads please
F to the blockheads
You need serious fauna and ecosystem for the trailer, dinosaurs please 🥺♥️ your game just a suggestion
This is amazing, you might want to weight the hips to the outer thigh and just below the waist and inner thigh staring from the groin with a V from the waist to the groin. The butt cheeks should be a mix between the bottom spine joint and the hip joints to the respective sides.
Why you abandon the blockheads? this game is so awesome i really want to play but you removed the game from play store
Between the animations and the textures, this isn't too far off from looking like roblox lmao.
Swiming and water splashes?
I think allow and don't allow would be too clunky a job priority system would be nice since people need to make multiple jobs in the early game. But please make job priority max 9 or more since there are a lot of jobs.
Note: I know you are trying to make your own game but you shouldn't throw practically just because you don't want it to be similar to other games. These are features tested by the audience and well-liked .you can improve on them but don't throw it out.
where is blockheads?
