    I've had a nice break, but it's time to get back to work and I've started adding nomadic tribes which pass through the area. I've also added Ambient Occlusion. SSAO is a nice effect which adds soft shadows around objects and helps bring the world to life. And lastly I have started experimenting with weather, and how the world changes on a cloudy/rainy day.
    The music website hobby project I mentioned is noteheads.net
    And the SSAO tutorial is learnopengl.com/Advanced-Ligh...
    In Sapiens, evolve your primitive hunter gatherers through thousands of years of technological advancement. Feed, protect and grow your tribe, build towns and industry, and advance through the ages in this first person civilization building god game for PC. Play with your friends in co-operative or competitive multiplayer, all on a procedurally generated planet larger than Earth.

    Posted this idea on the discord:
    The nomads (depending on the size of the group) should carry basic survival equipment so it seems like they have actually survived out on there own.
    Then bc they have stuff you can trade kill or welcome them into your tribe to get it. It would add more diversity to the way you would want to interact with the nomadic people.
    Larger nomadic group should have pack animals to carry there stuff.
    just an Idea.

    • @majicDave
      @majicDave  Před 4 lety +59

      Yep, that’s my plan. Once I have things that are more valuable that simple stone tools, and add the ability for your tribe to use animals to carry things, I’ll make it so nomads do too.

    • @ecgwineicling2543
      @ecgwineicling2543 Před 4 lety +13

      not sure how feasible this is, but it would work wonders towards making individuals seem less robotic if some basic human behaviour was added (i.e autonomous behaviour in the absence of player input). Basically, humans try to remain aware of where everyone is, and they try to huddle with their own group and avoid or hide from strangers. I imagine that some simple proximity awareness and algorithmic behaviour would give hilarious results and would make you feel much more affection for the characters.

    A much more realistic way of multiselect would be to use markings.
    For example with the apple farm, you mark the area of the trees with four poles, and then you can change the name of that area to "apple farm", afterward you task people to pick up apples at apple farm, instead of "these 44 selected apple trees".
    I think this is the most natural way to do it in terms of realism, maybe you even can put a fence between the poles?
    Thx for reading have a great day :)

    • @jskthefork
      @jskthefork Před 4 lety

      this is a great idea. The four marker system can make gameplay a lot easier as your tribes get more technologically advanced and you have to start managing large systems. His current multi select tool is good, I just worry it doesn't come off as visually appealing or functional

    • @ryann7760

    I'd like to submit what i think is a decent idea :
    You should maybe add a system to make your own tribe's banner, or symbol of a sort, so... like a little banner creator with some geometrical shapes and stuff so you can kind of connect with your tribe a bit more I guess, and also a autogenerated system for other tribes maybe aswell..Or just have one symbol to represent a "stranger" tribe that is not yours. Also if you do add this, please, i beg you, let us build like a little decorational banner in our village. :D
    EDIT: Also fences and walls to wall off our villages !

  • @fairextl
    @fairextl Před 4 lety +5

    I hope you hear my suggestion out, you're doing splendid by the way. It would be really interesting if the sapiens had two main resources when it came to food. One would be farming. Depending on the seasons, the area and luck the sapiens could sustain their population by relying mostly on it, meaning that would be the time where they can focus more on expanding their settlement. The other would be hunting and gathering. When the conditions aren't so favourable, they would have to organize hunting/gathering expeditionary groups so that they can at least get their basic life needs. This would mean less resources are allocated to the expansion of the tribe. For seasons like winter I believe it would be best if the sapiens had to rely on stored food, as hunting/gathering would be harder, riskier and less rewarding. I feel this will add a sense of danger to the game and goes along greatly with the mechanic of seasons plus it will be a great factor in diversifying playthroughs. The main thing this will provide is a sense of difficulty and survival, a struggle to keep the settlement healthy and constantly expanding. Thanks for reading this, it's greatly appreciated and I wish you great success in this project of yours!

    So far so good. I'm looking forward to seeing how you implement Water, and a water cycle. I recommend building a fluid engine so that later after you make water, mountains glaciers, snow, river, lakes, swamps, bogs, seas then oceans. You will be able to use your fluid engine to create other kind of liquids like oils, tar, lava, mud ect. Perhaps even none realistic fluids for your game if decide to move in that direction.

    @maximilianpoku3029 Před 4 lety

    I think this is a great idea to implement: The more sapiens walk on the same path the more that path is clear and it is starting to look like a road, and they prefer using these roads because they move faster.

    For selecting multiple trees, you could have two options for harvesting. Harvest one tree or harvest all. If you select harvest all, the sapien will harvest all the trees in a certain radius of the one you selected

  • @aldeezy1
    @aldeezy1 Před 4 lety +1

    You could add in a sort of shift+click to select multiple things of the same type, or a shift+scroll wheel to progressively add or remove items at an increasing/decreasing distance from the first selected item. you could also have a bind that swaps the camera to a top-down mode that has click+drag controls.
    In any case there are many ways to go about solving the multi-select issue and I'm looking forward to how you implement things!

  • @nfginola
    @nfginola Před 4 lety

    About the multi-select. A suggestion would be to highlight one specific object, then drag the slider so that it only selects objects of the same type in around it (perhaps in an increasing radius). You mentioned being able to "get all the apples" if we're in a forest and I suppose something like this would solve it.

  • @solarchaser166
    @solarchaser166 Před 4 lety +2

    One way to maybe solve the selection issue is to have a key that freezes your screen and unbinds your cursor from the x and y movement of your screen to allow for box selection? I could see someone positioning their camera/screen over an orchard, hitting the key, and then with a frozen screen dragging a box over specific trees.

    For selecting several objects at once you could make a top-down viewer with the selected object in the middle and you could draw a line around it with your mouse on said viewer. That would look both cool and be useful as you would have full control on what to select.

    Nomads would be a great way to add some trading in to the game
    Give the player tribe the opportunity to trade for items that they're short on, or perhaps even things that arent naturally occurring in their area. That would be pretty realistic as well. Items made in ancient britain were found in far off cultures like Egypt, being bounced from group to group.
    A remote chance to find something unique on a travelling nomads would be very interesting, although I imagine that's content for the future.

    When you mentioned the two guys growing old and that being the end of the game, i started thinking about an end-of-game mechanic where you would get a timeline with achievements (or events) that occurred through the gameplay, its similar to Spore, if you are familiar with that.
    thats to say if you are thinking of taking the game in that kind of direction, a "history of your people" kind of gameplay.
    In any case I am looking forward to see where you end up taking the game, and I gotta say every new video gets me more and more excited, and in a new way almost every time ;) keep it up

    Multi select solution could be double clicking for all onscreen items of same type, Ctrl select to cumulative selection and Ctrl double click select can select all objects of same type within a certain radius. This will be future proof if at any point you intend to do a fast paced tactical combat system.

    Suggestion for the multi-select. What if you take advantage of the scroll wheel? Lets say you click on a tree to open up the Wheel menu and you scroll up, any other trees in the area could also be highlighted and be Queued for the same job you wanted originally. If you scroll down while multiple are highlighted, maybe it can lessen the number of jobs you want in the queue

You select one try and then click a button to select more until you have all the objects you're after. In most cases I imagine people will just mash the "more button" until the whole patch of trees is selected but it still leaves some control.

    Love how this is going, one of the best series on CZcams! :D Just a quick question, are you done with the model of the huts? It might just be me but I feel like it looks as if the roofs are floating a bit too much, Im not an expert but maybe a additional building piece in a triangular shape could be used to fill in that gap, or maybe just a wall of wicker fencing to make it look like the roof is being held up by something. A couple of other ideas; maybe some more threats to the tribe, eg plagues, thunderstorms, wild dog/ animal attacks, Wildfires. Would be cool to see clans evolve and develop religions, clanleaders. Maybe even developing carts and using horses and yaks as transport. Maybe you could get the option to run a nomadic tribe. Regardless, keep up the great work! Looking forward to the next vid :D

    My main suggestion for this game would be to make forests larger and denser. The current forest look is really unrealistic for the time period. If you think about it, at the time when this game starts, all forests would be old growth, with many very large and old trees, and a densely covered forest floor. The current size and spacing of trees makes the game feel as if the trees are maybe 100 years old at the most, and I think that really overhauling the forests (though likely somewhat hurting performance) would add an intense feeling of wonder to the world, and make exploration and settlement all that more exciting.
    Also, for the multi-select, maybe it could be a toggle button. Then, if it's on, and you select an option, instead of queuing an order, it allows you to simply click on everything you want to select, and then confirm. or maybe you could even keep the slider as a base, but then modify it manually if you want. This could make it easier to multi-select objects of different types too, if you want to perform the same action on them. Just a thought.

    This is probably a far thought in development. But have you thought of a time element to the game?. Like the game having its own internal way of tracking your playthroughs and major events. With different eras marked ?.

    Please add Malerei more dense forests it looks a bit strange with very spaced out trees but so far so good well done

    Suggestion:
    You should make the sapiens only grow when they sleep I think it'd look more natural

    Didn't you show a multiselect method before where you clicked and dragged to change the size of the selector?

    8:33 make a possibility to create groups so an orchard group etc and an idea make it possible to create a sort of schedule for the days to automate because in larger tribes I would be come harder and harder to control the tribe

      Maybe as you advance, you'll get access to more complex tribe management sort of like in Banished

    In some earlier videos you said that the engine is in c++ and the game is in lua. Is there any chance for you to open source the c++ part? From what you said the engine is quite versatile and can easily used for other games.

    If I create music on your website can I save the music to Mp3 files and use them in my videos???

      Of course yep! All of the samples that I used were either public domain or recorded by me, and any music you create is yours. You can also export MIDI files.

    I just watched your 50th devlog videos this morning, and was thinking about the shadows while watching them, and now stumbled across this video. What I was thinking about was that the daylight shadows are very sharp. Yet there's a very computationally inexpensive way of calculating soft shadows (sort of. It's not super physically realistic but it looks good) using raymarching techniques. I have no idea what your rendering engine's core algorithms are, but in case it helps, here's an article on doing soft shadowing in ray marching: iquilezles.org/www/articles/rmshadows/rmshadows.htm

    So you have been working on the engine a whole lot, which of course is important. However, I wonder how far in development the actual gameplay is? It seems like there is basically nothing to do currently...
