This time the focus has been on a new mini-map radar view for selecting multiple objects. I've also started working on individual personalities, variations in the motivations and behaviors for nomad tribes, and the ability to recruit nomads and talk (well wave, really) them into joining your tribe.
In Sapiens, evolve your primitive hunter gatherers through thousands of years of technological advancement. Feed, protect and grow your tribe, build towns and industry, and advance through the ages in this first person civilization building god game for PC. Play with your friends in co-operative or competitive multiplayer, all on a procedurally generated planet larger than Earth.

Theses vlogs are so inspiring. I’ve legitimately taken a turn towards game development ever since I’ve started to watch your videos. Thanks!
Yeah, same, i am really motivated to do game development too
Boats and fishing would make the oceans and rivers a lot more interesting.
In too many games the oceans just serve as a boring watery barrier.
Maybe you can make them interesting and integrate them
The snow looks a bit flat.. it doesn’t look like snow, but more like white ground..
It might make the snow look better if you added footsteps from the sapiens, and perhaps a bit of snow shimmer?
yeah, I agree it looks a bit flat. I might work on that eventually, but I think it could take quite a few days of work to get right, with the payoff not really being worth it at this point. I've got to focus on gameplay and try to actually get this out the door one day! So there might be a perfect opportunity for a "More realistic snow" mod for someone :)
With snow being such a big part of the environment I think having beautifull looking snow would pay off a lot
I don't know guys, I like the snow as is. It's more stylized, like pretty much everything else.
@@hbloops I agree. It then would fit the water and sky he spend so long working on.
@@benrex7775 Right, the water for me is a selling point. And i know atleast in real life snow can be breathtakingly beautifull.
Note to self: How to make friends. Wave repeatedly. Do not give up. Though they may start walking away, know that your waves may eventually break them.
Toxiciron no its definitely just something he needs to fix in the game
Vain It’s a joke
Waving is the ultimate power move! 🤚😤
Tried it in real life, confirmed it works, but now they are eating all my food.
Thoughts:
1. You should add the ability to run. It's funny to see people raiding food at a walking pace
2. Multiselect seems good and well featured, but it seems like it would be hard to diffierientiate between different objects without the geography to reference. Perhaps you could add a very basic map overlay?
3. The clouds are awesome. The game is becoming quite beautiful.
4. I think you have the right idea with random tribe motivation. I think it has the potential to create infinite unique and interesting encounters.
Yeah the game needs some sort of stamina system for each Sapien which can be leveled up. Also a strength skill to determine carry capacity.
@@edwardecl yeah! If you you could then link that to hunger, you have the beginnings of a complex individual with interlinking needs. I know he has talked about skills learning before. It wouldn't be too hard to make stamina a "skill" you learn by running
Actually in the stone age people persistence hunted which involves moving very slow for days on end chasing an animal
You have the patience of a saint, and talent of a AAA dev best of luck with the rest of this project mate
Have you thought of implementing a shift-click system that allows you to multi-select specific objects?
that's actually pretty neat! it would be even more good (i think) if parallel to highlighting stuff on the background, you actually also move the camera further and further as you drag the radius. it will give even more hint, that you're covering more ground.
naturally, after exiting the contextual menu, you return to your initial camera, so that you do not interrupt any long-term user interaction
Yeah I like this
Oh, MAGIC Dave, I thought it was medic Dave FSR
Its that accent. He is saying Medic Dave, but to him it sounds like Magic Dave. :)
I think instead of the radar like selection. You should have it force you into a top down view and let you do the radius selection while seeing all the objects at once.
This is looking great ☺️
"Dad, i think i like this girl"
"what ya need to do son, is to wave at her"
"Dad, i dont think she is interested"
"just keep waving at her"
"she is literally walking away"
"Then wave harder!" 😡
I can't get over the grass shaders how nice they look
Who is the monster that dislikes this video? up until this point Dave has been giving us the development of his "pasion project", a project that has to have taken a lot of hours, a lot of knowledge about gamedev and a lot of personality and courage to expose it to the internet. If anything, you can dislike the project, or the decisions taken on the making of it. But even if you think that any of the decisions taken in the development is wrong, you can extract a wealth of knowledge from this videos and those decisions.
Keep the good work mate!
8:58 Prehistoric Bob Ross.
Just discovered Sapiens and binge watching the dev blog. Love the way this guy designs and really thinks through an idea! I've developed business interface software for over 15 years and just exploring game development in my free time after a few small projects piqued my interest.
where do we sign up to alpha test? would love to help out!
Multi select had me worried at first, but after watching the process of improving and revising it i am happy. Lol. This format is cool. I get to see the rough cut against the refined. I think it helps the audience appreciate the final product even more.
Multiselect a few nomads, recruit them and send them to raid food. Now you have a war game! Amazing stuff. Congrats.
love these videos dude and your drive to build a game. every time I watch I get the urge to continue my own programming projects so thanks.
I love this game so much. I like the idea of your Devlogs pretty inspiring. Keep up the work.
Another Great update. I look forward to these videos more than anything else on CZcams! Cant wait to play.
I love this solution! It's so simple and elegant.
Just watched some of you videos on my reccomended and already put your game on my wishlist for when it comes out. Wish you the best of luck for finishing by next year.
This game is getting better and better!! Well done
Awesome work Dave! Loving the progress! :D
You could use a lasso tool instead of a static circle to select your objects in the radar.
From Blockheads to Sapiens, you’ve come a long way!
Thank you for sharing this update! Salutes.
Wish I could watch the video, but I very easily get motion sick from these types of videos. At least you have a soothing voice to listen to!
Happy for a new video.
I have no game development experience, and it may be more work than it's worth, but I'd suggest a click and drag multi-select system. You could make it so you can see a list of all interactable objects and choose which ones to interact with (e.g., select only peaches in a list of peaches, rocks, and apples).
Awesome work so far!!
Keep up the great work man!
that box select is exactly what i was going to suggest
Wow, that multi select looks amazing.
I think the idea of food raids is the start of a really cool mechanic. I didn’t even think about tribal conflict up until now as a thing in this game. Also I think at some point you should add more of a sort of biome system where different biomes will have different races and maybe different resources but I understand that’s probably a really hard thing to implement rn. Good Luck.
I really like the radar select
Your game is simply beautiful 😍
Looks like a great game, i'd love playin it allready
some alternatives could be 1) have a button to hold to reveal cursor, and they can click and drag etc
2) give up on permanent no cursor, and hold a button to get camera controls (basically evaluate if your direction is worth it....)
3) take inspiration from dawn of man, and have "work zones" that highlight what it covers when placed and selected maybe
Going to be such a great game, Endless possibilities with mods that will be made by the community.
New video format is very cool
I am not sure I understand why the "radar" box select instead of just box select in the world.
I explained it a bit more in the previous video, but mostly it's because you have a first person view, so it's difficult to nicely select everything around you, given your view is likely blocked by other things, and you have to move the camera viewpoint around to draw a box. Another option might have been to move the camera up and look down, but there are lots of issues with that, and I liked the idea of having a simple graphical top down view that made all of the objects you were interested in easy to see.
@@majicDave maybe consider moving the actual camera to a top down view (maybe orthographic view) and then let people draw a shape with straight lines, being able to click to put an 'anchor' where 1 line stops and another starts so you can make 'corners'. Then figure out the screen to world position of those anchors and the object within the drawn shape...
Maybe snap the anchors to the nearest vertex, start from the first anchor and then check which adjacent vertice/triangles are within the drawn shape. Keep doing that until you have all within the selection area and from there figure out the object that should get selected.
Let the user decide if he/she is satisfied with the selection and then move back to the original camera position
@@majicDave is there some way you could do the radar select without the GUI? So for example a particle effect showing a radius that you can drag out (expand) from an initially selected item?
@@majicDave When you were talking about this issue the first thing that came to mind for me that may make this more seamless was using the mouse wheel. The area could just be projected on the ground with a more transparent style but similar to single selection. You could make it so that if you scroll up it increases the radius of the "multiselect" area without having to cover the screen with that radar menu. Obviously scrolling down would decrease the radius and the minimum "radius" is having only the clicked item selected. The radar thing may be a little disorienting. You could also add options to change the shape of the area between a circle and a square maybe? Possibly by pressing the middle mouse button? I'm not sure if you're even still reading comments from videos this old but I thought I'd put in my two cents.
I hope we’ll be able to fight against raids. You should make it that we can name our tribe, and randomly generate the names of other tribes. If one of your sapiens spots them raiding, maybe a notification will pop up that the ____ tribe is raiding your food stores. Maybe even have different responses based on personality and what the sapien has. Perhaps a raider would try to run off with the food, or without it. Maybe they could stay and fight for it if they have a weapon.
good work!
very good 👍
An idea to make the food raids slightly more realistic would be to implement a sort of behaviour triggered in the AI when they are tasked with a food raid, this could make them run or walk faster, look around, maybe even threaten the other tribe members or fight them. I know you probably have more planned for the raids but this would in my opinion really enhance how the raids would play out. Very good job though, please do keep it up. 👍
ohh i love these game nature views
Awesome! I'm still amazed on how much you get done, between these devlogs!
I was wondering though if you have thought about "drawing" the multiselection in 3D (similar to blender's circle select) instead of doing it through the map? And if so why did you decide against it?
I would have thought that this would be a way of interacting a bit more directly and intuitevely with the world. Or a shift+click multiselect.
Have you experimented with different grass/tree sway speeds? I'm curious how slower or subtler movement would look.
IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS !!
Damn I missed my notification
You can improve the snow by increasing the width of the specific land there dependent on the weather conditions, and adding footsteps could be done by reducing the width of that specific area by x amount or replacing that part with a texture, either or works.
15:48 potg sniper wave. She recruited him from 100 yards away via wave lol
are there prebuilt structures so you can queue up multiple buildings. when you were talking about food raids you should keep it so they eat some of the food well they are taking since it adds a little bit of personality to the raiders
I'm not sure if you ever played Halo Wars but they had an interesting and perfectly functional option for selecting multiple units that you could use as inspiration.
for a select sort of thing u could for example right click on a tree then right click on another tree ect.
A raid has commenced, your villagers catch him red handed, they make use of the spare room and use it as a prison. They lock him up. Your warden has a few options (depending on his skill level) of what to do with the thief (till you set up a court system). Your prisoner which you have been feeding for 3 days makes a prison break, stealing a handful more food gets away. Ah well at least the warden has made some skill progress.
holy shit i never realised you were the on that made blockheads. I used to grind that game, probs one of the best mobile games i have ever played!
Game looks great bro
I like the idea of multiple selections, but what about a lasso-selection as the standard?
A shift click feature for multiple selections would be nice? otherwise if you want to cut trees down, you need to select multiple types of trees still ?
It'd be cool if you could draw any shape you like on the multi select screen. Just drag with the mouse to create an enclosed area.
With all the traits and skills, it's shaping up to become something like Dwarf Fortress or Rimworld :)
I would add the radar at the bottom to one side of the screen as even though is semi transparent obscures the view too much in the middle. The round tool bar seems ok in the middle though I think..
I haven't got one of your videos in a while
multi-select should also be a drag-able box select and/or click select?
what programming language did you make the game with? Also how many hours do you think you put into making the game so far as well as how much you plan to put in, in the future?
will there be advancement in tech with better houses, tools, automation? Also will there be animal attacks, hunting animals?
You could record footage of the sapiens growing old to maybe even get some fun stuff or find some weird behavior. Maybe do that again later and compare.
I think multi-select by painting over the objects you wish to select on the screen in 3D would be kinda sleek
About the multiple select. How about one click for one item and a hold click to expand a visible radius to select more?
Same thought here.
Same thought here
You could use a similar system for selection like Cooking Simulator, where it highlights more and less for selection by using the scroll wheel.
What about having a permanent minimap on top? I think that would prove very useful
This would be awesome in vr
Have you put in any thought into making religions like gods or things that they could worship and give offerings to
nice
you could add a store/unstore bin key so it would be be simpler
I just discovered you! I watched most of your early videos too and your work is very inspiring! now I wait for your videos to see what new problems you faced and how you solved them. Keep it up! it's really looking amazing and sapiens is already on my wishlist!
how do you make a world generator like that?
i think a tribe level system could be cool, like to get to tribe level 4 you must have 25 sapiens and gotten certain items and have sapiens able to do/craft things. this would open it open for late game features like having different tribe types such as a raider type tribe which kills all the other tribes or a farming tribe thats soul purpose is to farm but you can only choose why type of tribe you want once you get to a certain tribe level
Im not sure why don’t you select the radius in your world directly like with from to clicking twice ... or by holding mouse . Seems more obvious to me.
Mini Bob Ross? 8:58
Let's build a happy little civilization
This is minor but you could add atlatls to improve the distance of spear throwing
(This is for his harvesting menu) Why not have the harvest menu first and then have multi select as something you can just use when you need to because I feel it might be quite annoying if you are trying to chop down just one tree but you have to go through the multi select menu to just chop it down.
Haha, who wants to replace school by waving the whole day at eachother? It's a proved method in Sapiens land ;)
The amount of screenshots I'll be taking will require a harddrive of it's own
with raids it starts to become a 3D Rimworld XD jokes aside it sounds cool
The selection radar looks cool Dave, how would it work in vr though?
it'll show up in front of you, and you could use the analog stick to increase the radius, or laser point for box select. I think it will work out OK.
oh hell yeah
How difficult would it be for this to be on console? I know it’s made for PC and it can be hard to switch platforms, especially for one person, but I do think lots of people would play on PS4/XBox
maybe add shortcuts in the radar view like ctrl + a to select all.
are there eventual plans of tribal combat?
Is there going to be an open alpha/beta? I can't wait to play this game!
It will be a closed alpha. And I don't know anything jet of the beta phase.
You should think about adding a fighting feature than can be used on other tribes to force them to join you in order to grow the tribe faster. Not trying to make this a really violent game, but it could add some action, which would be cool.
I think clicking an already selected point in the radar view should unselect it, would give you a lot more flexibility with little cost
A suggestion, can you make the game a bit like Kenshi where your Sapiens can break/disable their limbs in combat, then have doctor type skills.
How can I sign up for testing?
also will this game ever be multiplayer???
You should ad quarry’s to get rocks and clay
Yo mate, when will you release this awesome game?
Rather than having the mini map in the centre of the screen moving it to the left would make it a lot nicer for the end user
