How I started my Indie Game - Dev Log

- First Devlog ever - I know some of you were asking me to do some. It sure feels weird listening to your own voice so often while editing footage, even weirder talking to an imaginary audience while recording. Sure is a new skill to add to the bucket.

Well that’s a way.
haha, I guess so.
That's game have a unique feel, the gameplay and art remember Rayman and the great feel of playing it
Thank you, I rather like Rayman as well
It's looking awesome! Really enjoyed seeing the concept art for the character design. Looking forward to the demo!
Thanks, I think I'll talk about the art process a bit more this weekend
AskGameDev is here! Damn
This looks amazing. I loved Ghosts 'n Goblins back in the day.
This is a great homage to it
Would love to see more devlogs from you!
working on one right now
i think its a shame how few views these videos are getting your game looks literally like a triple a game or atleast from a bigger indie studio. I really hope this game will get the success it deserves great job!!
Thanks, ehh it is what it is, in terms of numbers, the fact that anyone watched it at all I'm happy with :) Thanks for the kind words
Don't worry, it seems the CZcams gods have finally come across his videos and have decided to maybe push the videos a bit - hopefully he'll blow up from this
I agree, this is criminal, I think it's only a matter of time before you get picked up by the algorithm, forget the views though, this is gonna sell well regardless
@@KillingSurvival yeah looks like the algorithm is starting to snowball a little bit. It's fine, I'm not particularly worried...I was like "if I fail, I'll fail quietly" haha I am glad there's a lot of positivity towards my work. Hope it lives up to expectations.
This game looks extremely well-made! I would never believe a single person made this if I hadn't seen these videos. Fantastic job!
Art style drew me in. Would love watch how it was created and implemented.
Keep up the effort. Gonna be a great game!
This game looks freaking awesome! You should be super proud of where it's at...the artwork, the movement, the polish that's already there, it looks very well glued together and considered.
If you've still got over a year's worth of work planned on it then this is hands down going to be an awesome game!
Wow, this game already looks better than many other games made by bigger teams. Instant wish list. Keep it up!
Thank you, I appreciate that. Its a lot of hard work.
Wow, the game looks very polished, like AA quality. Looks like a fun game! Love the art!
You have my day one purchase, and you have ever since you announced this project. I hope to see more devlogs, I love hearing your insight on the game. Please keep doing what you're doing, it looks incredible. I'll keep being patient and looking forward to its release.
Thank you for your patience, I appreciate it. Sometimes I'm pretty impatient and just want to get it all done with but I want it to be good so I didn't want to cut corners. But I'll see if I can carve out some time on weekends to put together a video talkin about the game/game stuff in general.
@@officialgrimwaregamesllc sounds good, looking forward to more videos. As long as you have the means in terms of financial stability to keep yourself going during development, take as long as you need.
I've been waiting for this devlog since you anounced it please keep doing this can't wait to see more of this game ^^
Will do!
Great first devlog start. And it was a funny ending 😂
Thanks, I was like "ehh maybe no ones gonna watch it anyway I'll just abruptly end it"
This is so inspiring. Terrific work. Killer trailer from 3 years ago, too! Can't wait for your next devlog.
I appreciate it, thank you
Nice project :) looking forward ! I really love the art style
Thank you!
I really like the art style of the game!! Looks great!
thank you
Been following ghost knight since the start. The game looks awesome great job dude, really looking forward to seeing more. The art style is incredible I would love to see a video about your process ❤
Thanks, can do!
Great job, bro! I would love to see breakdowns of gameplay mechanics, insights into your level design thought process, and perhaps some discussion of any Unreal Blueprint issues you encountered and how you resolved them.
With consistent uploads, you'll be able to reach a large audience. This is an aspect you should prioritize; the indie community is always eager to support new game projects.
You're definitely onto something here! ❤
Thanks, Can do!
This is amazing, yes please more! The animation is incredible would love to hear more about that too
Awesome! Been watching this game since the trailer was revealed, and am looking forward to playing it! Too bad (for me) you don't need a composer, as you seem to be doing that yourself. Sounds great! Good luck!
Thanks, yeah I really enjoy writing music, and I have a specific vision for it. We'll see if it works out.
@@officialgrimwaregamesllc I think you can't go wrong as long as you enjoy it!
Yes a video on how you go about putting a level together would be awesome.
I saw your game's combat from another video long ago and it definitely caught my interest.
Was it inspired by Ghouls n Ghosts?
Its kind of a mishmash of games I've experienced throughout my childhood.
The game looks so good already :) let me know if you need a video editor, I'd be happy to help
Loving the Ghost n Goblins vibe of the game. Looks like you've put in a tone of work into it already - very polished graphically!
Thank you, yeah it was a lot of work and still a lot to do.
Your game looks great and way to stick with it for all this time!
sticking with it is the only way it'll get finished haha
Looks amazing, best of luck with your game the art really looks great. I subbed :)
thank you for the kind words :)
Nice! You should keep on doing these!
Will Do :)
great job, i can't wait to see the next update!
It is SO TRUE how solo game dev feels like youre only going up by +1 in each skill 😅 That is genius. Hard but worth it.
Arty, As a fellow game dev, i'm immensely inspired by you. This undertaking is incredible, especially as a solo dev. Your talent is everything. If other's can come to see that you're not only programing this on your own, but also doing all the art, and handling the fantastic soundtrack....man you are a hero and an inspiration to anyone who has dreams of making their own game. You're a legend.
thank you sir, you're too kind
you sir are the inspiration
I'm so happy someone talked about the track! It really fits the game and vibe
Keep going mate, I too know the feeling of working alone on my indie games, Im currently trying to shake off some burn out after having a very productive first few months of the year. We got this! Game is looking great!
Yeah Burnout can be pretty crazy, luckily there's so many different areas of focus, whether you're writing music or animating a tentacle nightmare creature, there's always something interesting to work on. But some days...ugh...haha
The movement looks absolutely amazing. You've done a great job creating a world looks interesting and I'm super curious about the lore behind it. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, as I flesh out the lore I'll update with a video.
I love the art style. My only (unsolicited) constructive criticism is there seems to be a strong tint to darker areas that give a really soft look, like a low contrast LCD screen. It feels intentional, but perhaps just a bit over-cranked in my opinion. Keep it up and I'd absolutely love more dev logs, maybe ones about your environments and layering.
This looks amazing. Please take care of your mental health as well. I wish you all the best for your development and release journey ahead.
Wow looks great 🎉🎉🎉🎉
THIS SHOULD HAVE MORE VIEWS
Wow that's amazingly beautiful
The amount of content featured in this devlog alone is mind boggling. What an all star team you compiled to get inspiration and get started. Can’t wait to see more videos!
looks amazing
It looks really polished
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Looks amazing. Reminds me of ghost n’ ghouls. Super animation and art style. 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you
Beautiful man
Yo, this looks awesome!
Subbed
Ok, understanding now why this is so gorgeous, thank you so much for these devlog, this looks like a AAA game, I hope you finish it!
Thanks, yeah, working on it. Trying to polish up the demo right now, and going through all the legal stuff.
10/10 ending
thanks, I tried hard haha
@@officialgrimwaregamesllc that's the important part.
This game looks amazing! I'm 100% interested in the mechanics video. I'd like it if you also talk about the fx attached to the mechanics and how you did them like choosing the puff of smoke for the dash... I love that.
I'm subscribed so I will be eager to see more. I'd even watch you do dev live.
The puff of smoke if I remember correctly is what Cuphead also does with their dash.
Wow, looks amazing! Keep going!
your game looks absolutely incredible I'm a big fan of stylized games keep up the good work 👏
Thank you, workin workin 🙂
Guess im no one now 😂
Hi
Great work with the story, the editing and everything
Also the game is looking absolutely incredible, so theres that
Congrats
This vid id probably about to blow your channel up
So ye, u got a new sub for sure
Looking forward to more
haha, I wasn't really expecting too many people to see it anyway. My important thing is less the channel and more the game. But I am working on another dev log
Great job man . Looks inviting. I am pretty sure that it is going to successful.
it looks amazing!!!
Loving the progress so far, cool art style man!
thank you :)
Am interested in the art style of your game I'll happily follow you along your journey plz release your game on mobile also
Nice work!
First time I've ever heard of you or seen this game. You have nailed the aesthetic. I'll sub to you and wishlist the game.
As soon as you said you had a history in design, i immediately knew this was gonna look fire. Not only does it already look visually appealing but it looks like the mechanics and creativity are also off the charts already. Can’t imagine what this is gonna be like after several months of polishing and improving. Amazing job fam!
Hey thanks :) appreciate your kind words.
Looks good! Goodluck on your development journey
Day 1 buy for me. Love the look and the style of the game. You are incredibly talented. And holy smokes, you have some solid connections with a lot of talented people around you!
The game looks amazing. I can see this as a success. (Added to wishlist). Wishing you great luck.
I am an environment artist too and always wanted to make games but coding is not my thing.
Thank you, Coding wasn't my thing either, still isn't haha, and neither was animation, or anything else haha. Just a matter of what you put your skill points into.
I am crazy impressed with the art.
thats lookin very nice
Man i really envy game artists sometimes.. as a programmer I am locked to either make own super-bad art, buy generic assets or be forced to either hire or collaborate with an artist.
I know solo-creator artist also struggle with coding, but as long as you are not making a live-service game or some AA/AAA large project, the amount of tools and tutorials available to make things working usually get things done. while for us, we're stuck with super ugly design xD
PS:
this is not a rant or anything on this video, i really like the content and the game, best of luck to you!
I gotcha, yeah I had the same struggle but in reverse, art was easy, but programming/blueprint, animation, rigging, game design, stuff was the hardest.
Sooooo, where is the end? :@
You go king...you guys are the best
Not a fan of platformers but this still look cool
That ArtStyle is really something unique, love it ! Keep it up:)
Looks great!
Also, I have decided to get back into dev again because of your video. I wish I could just load a scene in unity and look at how/what you did.
That's cool, Development is a long process. Sometimes I was like am I ever gonna finish this?
I'll do some breakdowns soon enough, But I'm using Unreal Engine - luckily I managed to avoid some of the Unity Drama lately. But man I hope Epic doesn't change their TOS randomly haha
you game looks incredible! let me know if you need any sound effects.
Hey mate, not sure this is the best description but do you have any assets that are kind of an organic/space themed cross over?
I'm working on a peaceful space adventure game for mobile, called Paper Space. I just released Devlog #0, where I speak to the audio a little bit, but my sound effects are mostly stand-ins at the moment. Thanks 🚀
@@NightHutStudio I emailed you. look forward to working with you.
@@floraphonic awesome, got it! Have sent you some info about what I need help with :)
This game looks SOOOO GOOOD. I can't wait for the release
You have shown an incredible talent and determination. The result so far looks really polished. Love it. Subscribed
Thank you, means a lot! Cheers!
Wow, looks great. Have you heard of the game ghost and goblins? LoL. I see what you are doing, I'm over 30. I would love to see a new ghost and goblins like aways. Good luck, sounds like you know way more than me can't wait to play this.
You have some crazy cool friends lol
Yes, but also I paid them well for their time. One I knew through a co-worker, the other I sought out based on their artstation portfolio.
Very inspiring as someone who also just started working on my own game. Sadly I do not have the connections in the game industry you have so I have to make my own art-style (I am *not* an artist I cannot stress this enough haha)
I hope you keep these coming because even if you do not get hundreds of thousands of views, it is inspiring for people like me who has been in the development industry but never dared to take the leap of actually putting time and effort into our projects. *It's scary, who' knew?*
I have to say though, this does not look like a 1-man project because it is beautiful, animations and everything.
I can probably do a video in a bit more depth on their rolls in helping me out, but Both of them were contract jobs I hired them for, Nick I knew through a co-worker but Simon I basically sought him out from Artstation - I never met him in person. So theoretically, if they'll have you as a client, you can always reach out to artists to help you get your stuff figured out.
It's looking like it is coming along really well. Great visuals and it seems like the feel is decent. Reminds me of Ghouls 'n Ghosts a bit.
Wow it looks awesome but how did you manage to create a beautiful 2d game in unreal engine which is mostly for 3d
Super Ghouls and Ghosts! It looks like Super Ghouls and Ghosts!
amazing
straight up, modern gouls and goblins. Looks amazing!!
very happy to follow the journey of a pro in the industry. Rly looking polished
Yoooo it's me from twiter!
nice to see you on here
I fkn LOVE the art style
incredibly impressive work on the art man, good work
I'd love to hear more about what steps you took to actually put a game together. Do you have any programming skills? Is the game done entirely with blueprints? That kind of stuff. I make 3d art and would to love to make my own little indie game but I'm lost when it comes to actually making something interactive.
Yeah, so parts of it is C++ most of it is blueprint. I try to make sure I have the least amounts of things running on TICK as I can for performance and I try to optimize everything as I possibly can.
I started with basically a goal, then broke it down into smaller goals. Make a character move...what do I need to learn...animation blueprint, states, input controls, character anim walk cycles. ok character is moving...next I want to make him throw stuff...need an animation...need to press a button to play the animation...need a projectile model...need spawn projectile and have it fly the direction the player is facing.
So if you create your own goal of what you want and break it down. You can do it!
CZcams has lots of resources. Gnomon workshop, Artstation, Gumroad. lots of tutorials out there!
Looks cool. I'mma binge the rest of your videos while I work.
Nice! Thanks. Hope you have a great day at work!
you can be proud of yourself, the game looks good!
Hard to do that sometimes, its been a journey, still lots to do. Hopefully I can feel proud, when its done.
Great vlog, intersting journey and your game looks great
Looks pretty cool, good luck!
My heart, it would be an honor to work with you on a project.
I myself have been playing video games for 26 years and now that the time is very favorable, I would like to launch my own game or a game together with others. The game itself is an adaptation. Or rather, a kind of PvZGW2
And what else should I tell you about it? If you just feel like it or want to know more, just write to me.
Because even if you are currently working on a game, I of course wish you every success and everything she can imagine comes true and if you would eventually itch to ask where we are at the moment, I would be very happy if you would also like to take a closer look :)
Thank you, and maybe we’ll hear from each other
😊
Looks good but isn't January the absolute worst month to release? Nobody has money after Christmas (normal people).
Hey, just some friendly criticism. I don't mean to sound like a dick, but I noticed that you sounded kind of deadpan in your delivery. I'm also someone who struggles with that kind of thing, but I just wanted to point it out. Again I'm not trying to sound like a dick
yeah, fair criticism, I am pretty deadpan. We'll see if that improves haha.
Why everything is so blurry? It's really hard to find the character in this blurrymess :/
Seems cool, but taking 3 years just to kickstart the marking? =( You need to start get some wishlists ASAP, in my opinion.
This looks amazing!
