Hi guys and welcome to a new devlog. I've spent the last ~month and a half making and improving the new character for Resttore, my open world indie game inspired by Breath of the Wild and Valheim.

I LOVE how you took the time to make the animations look natural and fluid. Something a lot of indie devs struggle with and don't prioritize. Good job! I love following your process in this!

I really like what you have shown us of the game so far. Though if I have one thing I feel could be better is the falling animation. It's lively but having the legs move in sync with each other looks really weird. If you delay the movements of one leg during the falling animation or just differ how it moves it will look better. I'm probably explaining this poorly, as I know I'm prone to do, but I do know animation and symmetrical movements can sometimes look a little funky.
That's a good point, I'll try to edit this animations, but in any case, this are just placeholder animations, I will get new animations for every movement once everything feels right

Man I love games that has these types of complex animations!! My favorite one is how the player's feet adjusts depending on its surface, man this is the kind of videos that I could watch for hours or maybe even days lol, anyway I really enjoyed this video and I hope you fully complete and polish this game HUGE POTENTIAL :D

To fix the player going through the floor Disable the Gravity if falling faster than -4000 To prevent continual accleration

Can you let me know if it works for you? And I’m building a master material function node. Would you like to use it?
A few ideas for bug fixes and additions to the game.
-Use the control rig to have the players hand trace any near by walls and surfaces
-Leaning away from any objects close to the players head
-Tripping when hit in the legs by enemy or environment object
-Shield charges onto enemies
-Enemy ragdolls
-And just a random idea idea idk if you want to do it, but if there is a dangling sign or vine or something the character flips it and it wobbles (probably unreasonably difficult and useless feature)
-To fix climbing you can use procedural animation, if the foot or hand moves too far from the characters torso move it back to a pre specified position that moves in relation to torso(prob really useless advice)
-I think the reason the character is clipping is because the character moves x amount each frame so frame before
| | moves too far in between each frame (hard to explain) so you gotta send a ray cast or smtg back to where
0 next frame | it was last frame and see if it collides with an object

i have an idea, what if you gave the player a magic hand that allows him
1. connect stuff with green slime in order to create stuff like cars and hoverboards
2. merge stuff together like a shield and a smoke bom so when you block and enemy attack with your shield the smoke bom will activate
3. make him go through ceilings so he can get on top of building and other stuff
4. revert time for specific objects including objects that fell from the sky so he can go up by standing on the object

you should add freestyle (black lines that move with details)in blender to make your character more like a 2D anime character also you should give him zori (old japanesse type of shoes) as shoes

Do You plan on adding npc characters in your game
Yeah, not a lot of them because they are hard to make, but a few really unique ones
Does your sliding mechanic work in landsape terrain where its not even.I followed an old Ue4 tutorial to make something similar but it only works on relatively flat surfaces,when on a landscape my character slides indefinitely until it reaches a flat area.Works as intended when using simple static meshes but not so well with landscapes.If possible can you make a tutorial on how you implemented yours?

Damage from fall objects uses the "Hit" event and you can work out how much damage to do from the speed the object was at during the time of impact. simpler to making fall damage
Interesting, do you have any idea how to correctly set up the physical properties to make a big object feel heavy? No matter what I do to the assets, they always feel like they weigh nothing.
@s4bishii not sure about feel directly but objects can have a direct weight which can be set in the physics category. This is meant for simulations, but will be fine for games

What resources did you use to learn more about Control Rig?
Unreal documentation and youtube tutorials
Very impressed with your animations and overall workflow! I wish I started my game late enough to use control rig too... Did you see the petting dog demo? Honestly selling a BOTW style locomotion system/base character based on this would probably make you a lot of money, anyways curious to what you will be implementing next!
I have thought about selling parts of this locomotion system as marketplace assets, maybe I will.

Just voicing a concern- if you make something too similar to Zelda while impressive i don't think its great for establishing your own player base, remember to incorporate your own twists and additions on the format to help distinguish your game's own identity to help validate the purchase for other gamers. Plus you know- the more different the better for legal reasons :)
I agree, I have to do more things that differentiate my game from BotW and give a unique touch to Resttore. It's just that BotW has the best movement feel I've ever felt in any video game so I'm trying to get as close to it as I can in that aspect.

Yes I do plan to add idle animations. It's just not a priority at the time (I need to use the money to buy more important animations)
I forgot what type of game it'll be, but will crafting & building be included? The game has a perfect artstyle for having crafting and building imo! :) Also you should add more details to the clothes of the character, it looks really plain and with some extra tinkering with that your character actually looks insanely well done
Yes, there will be crafting and building in the game.

Yeah making the devlogs is complicated, both game development and video editing are super time consuming.
This is really amazing, I bet If you sell the animation logic it could create more revenue for you

@@s4bishii yeah, I would buy it, if it is in Unity Asset Store. Purchasing your work doesnt mean that we will make a successful game. Game development is not just about animation, it does speed up the development. If the game success, your name would be in the credit, if not, you already get your money. I see that as a win win solution for you
