Join me in this devlog and see how I fail trying to create the main character for my indie game Resttore using Unreal Engine 5, Blender and some other tools.
Check out Brian's course on basic animation with blender. it's a bit expensive but totally worth it. I personally will be using this course to learn how to make animations for Bob.

This is a game development video similar to the devlog series that Randy, Code Monkey, Pontypants or AIA do for their own indie games. - Hry
Hey there, if you can afford it, please consider supporting me on Patreon, it really does make a big difference

Iâve seen a lot of comments nitpicking design or implementation methods, and trying to backseat drive development.
I just wanted to say that I think the work youâve done so far is phenomenal, and Iâm pumped to see what you continue to do đ
I have been watching so many Devlogs lately and I am absolutely loving all the projects people are working on lately. These are people with actual passion for games rather than asset dumps.
This looks so awesome! definitely add a vault mechanic and mantle mechanic to make the movement much smoother, also I think you should try to start work on a bit of combat, it would be awesome if the character had a needle like sword from hollow knight silk song. Keep up the good work!
I'm adding it to the list for when I get back to work on the character
@@s4bishii Nice! what are you working on now?
â@SÎBISHII Unreal added a Vault mechanic plug in for its free monthly content. Not sure if you checked it out or not.
@@Brosquini I plan to start with the inventory system next
@@darksapphire6829 Yes I got it, I still need to check it out tho
Thanks for the shout out! â„
Thank you for the opportunity
Great devlog! You inspire me to continue at my goals of game development, and thank you for sharing your process and especially the difficulties you encountered.
Hey just wanted to say that putting a mask on a character is also a great way for the player to identify to them. It's never a bad idea :)
Hey you can just scale the bones in unreal, go to edit mesh, ctrl + A to select all and modify the scale. Lot less touble then changing things in blender.
no way, I wish I knew this back then, thanks for the tip!
@@s4bishii no problem bro, If you want any help with your game, ue, blender. Let me know I like contributing to indie games.đ
@@cromrin awesome, thanks! will keep it in mind!
your devlogs are so entertaining and I love how even though you're skilled, you don't shy away from showing where things were hard or where you messed up. Your problem solving skills are fantastic and your work sofar is really inspiring!! :D
Nice and quick update!
Your videos are really entertaining! đ
Thanks :D
that thing with blender exporting with the measurements caused me a lot of trouble when I first started unreal, so it is nice to know that I don't have to scale every model to 1000x the original size.
Some things never change đ€Ł
LOVE these devlog vids. Seeing the process from start to finish and implementing goals and showing the common challenges is both beautiful and also really really inspiring
I'm glad you liked it :)
IT REALLY FUN TO WATCH YOUR VIDS DUDE!
Very encouraging
really fun devlog and game looks great, keep it up!!
Making a whole custom character is mad impressive. Good job !
I really enjoy this dope video !!! Keep up the good work brother â€
Imma be honest wasnt expecting much from these devlogs since you started with the 3d enviroment but even if everything is not perfect i am very impressed. Good job man keep going!
What I like about this video, is the format. Keep up with this format and you will go far!
this was an awesome trip XD, im deffinitely sticking around to see more
Youâre killing it man, keep grinding đȘ
this is inspirational stuff man! im currently planning out and working on my own projects and your work gives me so many ideas, great vid!
I am glad you find my videos helpful :)
I recommend looking into interactable around the world that could aid in the puzzle solving, like boxes or other object that need to be move/place in order to progress in a puzzle or area. And just came across your videos today and watch all of them in a row, as an aspiring level designer and environment artist myself, the work your are putting into Resttore is giving me even more motivation to keep on working towards the dream. So keep working at it cant wait to see what you do next,
I'm glad my devlogs helps you somehow :)
I plan to add puzzles and physical interactions in the game, but that isn't a priority yet.
For the climbing you can use procedural animation
Yeah, I need to look into procedural animations to adjust the hand and foot postions
You have great editing skills and good pacing keep it up!
Great video, I can't wait next one. Cheers!
this is a great little channel! Keep up the work! I hope to be able to do this one day and its great seeing a dev showing their work process and making genuinely entertaining videos from it! +1 subscriber obtained
to the climbing animations, you might add some that indicate slipping, hesitation, anxiety. Unless the player character is a Ninja... Likewise for swimming: coming up for air, struggling a bit, momentarily DogPaddling, etc
Great, all added to the todo list. Thank you for the detailed feedback!
I have a small secret on how to rig your character without having to weight paint every accessory. You can make a shape around the character. and apply Mesh Deform modifier.
hope this makes sense
Oooooh, I have to try that, I had no idea, thanks for the tip
Bro you are crazy fun to watch please keep doing what you're doing
I will :)
I love you, I love bob, and I love these devlogs. cheers
Loving the content! Keep up the great work friend :)
Great job it looks great!
This is a really fun devlog man! Just subbed, cool to see other gamedevs on CZcams!
thanks man, good luck with your game!
@@s4bishii You too!
your videos are really nice, continue like this!
I really enjoy your videos! The content is interesting in itself, but your delivery.... what can I say? CAPTIVATING! You have me cheering and laughing the whole way through. I admire your honesty and sarcasm. I can't wait for the next one!
I'm really happy that you're having fun with my videos :)
dude you're awesome, I really had fun watching this video, it looks amazing and this video was funny as hell. Keep it up !
Thanks :D
Papi ,promo y todo ,que bien man ,super duro ! đ„đ„
I am really interested in your game. keep it up! For the movement suggestions, i really enjoy gliding in games specially if complemented with upward wind zones
9:30 - This part had me absolutely pissing myself HAHA!! .... Ughhh man, Watching this was so painful.. You ran into problem after problem & I know how that feels, nothing worse than a forced "Study time" break during an already frustrating art/development session... Keep going my friend, you will do great I'm sure of it :)
Thanks man, I'm glad you were entertained
I love your devlog, because you approach it with a beginner's eye, which allows me to receive information and logic that I have never seen before, which allows me to learn everything that is usually hidden by other youtuber, to which you find yourself confronted without having predicted it, in "WTF IS THIS HOLLY MOLLY FUC*ING SH*T?!"
I'm glad it helped you
Nice video. I'm new to game dev and is currently making an open world rpg too. I'll will follow your progress for inspiration. Keep up the good work! đâ€ïž
Sliding, wall jumping, slide jump, crouch jump, wall jumping, ledge hanging/moving, there's a bunch you could do, depends
Adding all that to the to-do list
very nice, excited to see more... đ„°đ„°đ„°
Oh oh, add sliding when on a slope
Sure
Looks awesome
Do a barrel roll /j
This looks amazing so far!
Thanks :D
Some Titanfall 2 wallrunning and Just Cause Wingsuit movement would be awesome, maybe add a hookshot or grapple swinging too?
Added to the list!
Nice man!!! I've been making sprite sheets for almost 2 weeks now, I am fantastic with code, but I am not artistically inclined. Congrats on making a player controller! Good luck on the next part
Thanks :) Good luck to you too
Neat update mate! Like that you mention those who've solved the problems you ran into. It'd be that much cooler to give the links to their specific tutorials also! Will probably get Brian's course on animation basics. If there's a discount on it at some point, even sweeter!
You're right, I'm going to start linking the tutorials and infos I use for the devlogs, I wasn't doing it cause I'm lazy đ
I talked to Brian and he only offers discounts on special occasions, I can't tell you when the next discount is I'm sorry.
@@s4bishii Oh you actually talked to Brian for a discount?!? Dude you are AWEOME! I didn't mean for you to actually ask for it. Just meant that he'd probably offer some around occasions, which I (and probably other viewers) would love to benefit from. And I won't call you lazy mate, you're putting out quality stuff already, while maintaining a day job! As everyone gets inspired by your work, and learns from the sources that helped you, everyone wins! Pat yourself on your back, you're a winner! đđ
BOTW art style + UE5 + open world ... I'm so excited ..
other movements? I think gliding .. using bow .. falling from huge distance .. moving bob hands like he is in a middle of a conversation .. sprinting .. melee attacks .. holding an object .. eating .. cooking
Great ideas, I'll definitely add some of those in the future
You can change the scale of a rig under the export options when you export FBX so you don't have to deal with it inside of Blender!
Ohhhhh, I need to try that, thanks for the advice!
Just saw your devlog and the game looks awsome! I'm currently making my first game!
Good luck with your game Nick!
Great seems like everything is starting to come together
Little by little :)
Interesting AND hilarious!
genial, la forma que lo explicas es muy sencilla y facil de absorber. estare atento a este canal
'Bob was happy'... and so were we, dude, so were we xDDD.
For real, tho, the dimensions are always a mindf*ck in any system whatsoever, so no wonder you're first try was f***. Good thing you figured out the trick.
As for the rest, well, get to work! Even I want to see the end result even if it's only a first demo!!!!
BOB đŁ BOB MOVE đŁđŁ BOBBBBBB WE NEED YOU!! đđđ I love your videos so much. Your game is beautiful, and I enjoy seeing the updates. Keep up the incredible work!!! Can't wait for more!!! đ„°
great devlog! you are really funny
Double jump, parkour stuff. I just found this channel and watched both devlogs. Subscribe, like.
maybe instead of climbing add vaulting
its less likely to exploit the enemy ai later on
mmmm true
I really like the art style
great video!
nice devlog!
OMG,is Amazing!
Your video was awesome :)
This game already looks super cool and promising! I don't have any good feedback for the game itself, but I would recommend reminding the audience what the game is about at the beginning of every dev log so people don't have to go and watch your first dev log just to understand what's going on. Something as simple as "My open world, story and exploration driven RPG," or something like that may help people immediately understand more about your vision for the game so any feedback from the comments could be a bit more relevant. I look forward to seeing where this goes dude!!
Oh, I hadn't thought of that, great feesback, I'll be sure to do that from now on.
@@s4bishii No problem dude! can't wait to see where you take this channel and the game :D
This looks like a awesome game
Surely you'll need a landing animation for longer falls that is more intense for higher heights. Perhaps even a bit of dust particles for foot impacts.
Quick thing about rigging in Blender and all : when you're weight painting a character, you should 99% of the time turn on "Auto Normalize" in the Tool Options.
It is not turned on by default for some obscure reasons but it's a life saver. (it makes sure that what you're painting can't have more than 100% of influence, i.e if you paint something red for one bone, it's gonna be blue for every other bone.)
dude, no way, now I feel dumb as f*ck đ€Ł
god yes, i passed by the same many times trying to import vroid to unreal, you solved with the solution we use on sgb and bakin engines (same core and same devs of both) and i had no idea..lol. now im learning how to do an character in blender properly from zero.
Thank god that plugin exist đđ
@@s4bishii yeah, if it did not exist then we had to route by blender and remake all material, texture and bones. I personally am learning the whole process since zero.concept, Design,3d modeling,uv texture, rigging and export to UE4. All courses teach to reassign material after import to unreal
put a weapon on his back, or a cape that moves with physics (makes it look more like a game) or maybe a backpack
Yeah, more physics would help a lot
@@s4bishii Yeah, i always feel alot of indie third person games forget to make the character feel like they are moivng and apart of the world
You can make a chest system that has random items, once opened the item will go to your inventory.
Good idea!
Bro got more than 1000 subscribers in less than 2 weeks....W
you can replace the mask and face with a shadow so its unique and fits with the hood
Hey there!
I caught up and I already love Bob.
I have two ideas for Bob.
Leaning and Sitting.
Imagine Bob leaning against a tree with a big grass field in the background, maybe with a toothpick or a flute when idling?
Or imagine Bob sitting in a relaxed manner on a rock. Bob needs some rest after all that movement.
And as a bonus for movement specifically. Well....can Bob do the Naruto Run?
Love the project so far! Keep it up!
Nice ideas, I can imagine those cinematic shots. I'll work on that later.
PS: Maybe I'll do the naruto run just for the LOLs đ
great video man! I'm so lost trying to follow along lol
What do you mean?
@@s4bishii ha! I was trying to learn how to make a character myself and I found this video. Itâs so cool. Your previous video on the open world was so talented too. I was trying to follow along at first and then realized thereâs no way I can!
@@conradicalized Just try and try and you will get there in the end. Good luck!
Question: How do you make your character clothes jiggle when they walk?
I'm using Unreal built-in tool for cloth simulation
Your arts and design are so amazingâ€
Big fan from India
As a request, pls make a video on you pc specs
I have a pretty old PC.
i3 8100f + 8GB RAM + Nvidia GTX 1060
My man, Still didn't got a hug from BOB.
đąđ
Nice đđ
nice bro
Love the art style, just found your channel today and subscribed and here you are already uploading 20 mins later! Amazing đ
we need part 3
Bob? Bob? Bob move! đ

Bro
MĂ©tele LATAM edition XDdd
Ta genial la idea, avisa cuando vaya a salir para jugarlo al toque. Suerte milocođ©
Bueno es un survival asĂ q ya es latam edition xdxd
This was a super entertaining video and the game is looking so good already!! Might I ask, what is the main premise of Resttore?
It's an open world survival game with puzzle solving. You can take a look at Devlog #0 where I talk more about the game concept.
I LOVE THESE VIDS BOB, never stop making theseđ„°đ„°
Since you're going to keep the mask, I'm going to Imagine bob Face under the mask looks like a JoJo character from now on.
I allow it đđ
It would be great if you added character customization, something like different colors and designs for the mask and clothes styles and some skin tones
Sounds good, I'll add that option
Bob Sliding down steep hills could be cool
I'll add it later :)
Your Trees looks nice, i am trying to figuring out how to make beautiful trees and stuggling. Have made them like all by urself? or did you have tutorial you followed along?
I used the Houdini's tree generation tool
What a legend! I had some problems getting the swimming system to work, any tips or tutorials you followed?
I followed Ryan Laley's tutorial series on swimming here on youtube.
Thank you so much!
good enough
Suggest adding some "idle" animations-- bored, listless, distracted, antsy, lost in thought, ...
Absolutely!
lets add some action moves!!
Great Video! Good Luck on the game. Would highly recommend a new mic though lol.
Yeah I need a better one đ€Ł
Wow
Hey nice vid, what software do you use 9:38 for your todo list ? Thanks and keep the awesome work up !
Obsidian
@polluxik the ToDo list is made using the Kanban plugin. You can find it in community plugins.
coloque parkour!
Make him take flowers and throw them(I had tooooo many weird AF ideas so at least something)
Ok đđ
