  • It's all too easy to present myself as a negative person, I find it much easier (and more fun) to talk about the things I dislike than the things I love. It comes with the territory when you're English.
But the truth is, even though I've made nine Leave My Ears Alone! videos where I point out the video game sound effects and songs that were horrible or plain annoying to my ear drums, there are far more that I can't get enough of.
So for a change of pace, this is Don't Leave My Ears Alone!, where we're going over the music and sound effects from this medium I adore and why I do.
Warning: May contain spoilers for plot heavy games, such as Shining Force II, Mother 3, Fire Emblem (GBA), Dragon Quest 3, Final Fantasy V and Persona 5.
The original Don't Leave My Ears Alone: • Don't Leave My Ears Al...
The second Don't Leave My Ears Alone: • Don't Leave My Ears Al...
The third Don't Leave My Ears Alone: • Don't Leave My Ears Al...

One of my favourite gaming sounds is the Skill level up jingle that plays whenever you level an attribute up in Project Zomboid, you rarely hear it but it ends up being super satisfying to listen to after a while of not hearing it, like a treat for surviving for so long or spending a lot of time working towards a goal.

the cool thing about softly with grace is that at the end of the day it's pretty much just a sped up and slightly tweaked version of the black fang song that plays in cutscenes, it took me an embarassingly long time to realize that but it does have a much different vibe even though it's pretty much the same melody

I can relate to Skyward Sword's motion controls feeling like I'm actually attacking the boss myself. I still remember when I fought Koloktos the first time and it actually felt like I was heaving a massive sword back and forth and cutting a massive foe to pieces. Of course the sound and visual effects helped, but that was one of the only times I can think of where motion controls actually enhanced the experience for me.
As for favorite gaming sounds, I have a very specific one: I've gotten so fond of Mario's "Let's-a-go!" when you enter the main menu in Mario Kart Double Dash, I have to go back the title screen and hear it again at least 5 times. Something about his voice's high pitch at the start, slight pause, and gradual descent is so pleasing; it just screams "GCN Mario" and reminds me of the golden age of Mario spin-offs

One of the games from my childhood that I love, PokePark 2, also did that "Softly With Grace" thing by having 4 separate tiers for battle music. The highest tier was reserved for the Zone Bosses of Wish Park (the antagonistic force of the game), which there is only 4 in the game, which is pretty special since you get into a LOT of battles in that game.

The type of music that I love to listen, is when you fight a threatening boss with high position of power and authority. For example: Zinnia's battle theme from Pokemon OR/AS, Beat the angel from Tales of Symphonia, and my recent favourite: Legendary Showdown from Andaron Saga.
For those unfamiliar, Andaron saga is a Fire Emblem hack based on FE8. Most of the game's soundtrack is made by two composers: Tambo and Treatstar, and this song was made by the latter. Anyway, Legendary showdown is a boss theme against the house leaders of Andaron: Very powerful people who wield their bloodline weapons called regalia, Similar to FE4's House leaders and their Holy Weapons.

18:01 Metal Gear Rising has a similar effect with all its boss fights.
When the boss gets low enough on health, the lyrics come in, and it's possible you may not understand them at first, but once you learn what the lyrics are, you see that they often tell a story about the boss you're fighting.

Going off the idea of 'Serious' boss themes, or ones that clearly showcase just how much bigger a threat this specific enemy is over others: Oppression from Cave Story.
    (SPOILERS FOR CAVE STORY)
Oppression is used for one boss, the climax boss of the game, The Core. This one just comes out the gate with ramping up to something terrifying, much like the build up to the actual fight itself; after a hectic corridor fight, you have a break to slowly make your way through the various subsections of the core to open up the main door and finally get inside, in hopes of finding an exit to the Labyrinth. You finally get in, and it's barren, covered in destroyed robots...finally, one activates, giving a horrifying last message before exploding, and immediately afterwards, you're fighting one of the biggest things on the island, and you're at a severe disadvantage. The entire fight is absolute panic, both in-universe and out, with the core constantly raising and lowering the water, pushing you around with wind currents, and firing attacks that you can barely keep up with, all while Oppression blasts you with...well, heavy oppression. Finally, you beat it, but apparently that was the worst thing you could have done, and the game begins its descent into the second act of the story...

One of my favorite cases of bosses that get special music are the fights against Craft in Mega Man Zero 4. There's just something about the way you're forced into fighting Craft like half-way through the game that just feels so bad-ass, especially since his fight is one of the harder ones in the game. Heck, he's even more special than the first phase of Dr. Weil, who just has regular boss music!

I've always loved the victory theme in Twilight Princess because of the exact reasons mentioned here. I am glad someone said it so succintly! Also, how many times has the thumbnail changed?
Furthermore, does Git still dislike mother 3? I guess you can like a thing about a game you dislike otherwise.

One thing I absolutely adore about Baldur's Gate 3's soundtrack is that, during battles, the music will transition to a more upbeat and triumphant sounding version when you kill an enemy. It's the perfect thing to lift your spirits after a string of bad rolls.
Also, Raphael's Final Act. I'll just leave it at that.

I thought the first Luminous Arc's level up theme seemed OTT for a simple, well, level up theme. (probs my favorite though)

My favorite thing about Shiren's level up themes is that while you feel good hearing them... enemies have their own version which are "OH SHIT!" in audio form x)
I liked how 5 gave female party members their own rendition too, it was a cute touch, I'm almost sad 6 doesn't do that. Almost, because party members are only ever with you for 5% of the game x)

I agree, my playlist is full of boss themes xD one I think the most badass boss theme I ever heard is the one in Rocket Knight Adventure (the first one for the Genesis), is so hectic and intimidating!
Something that I really like about game music is also when they make remixes of a theme to alter its emotion, the first ones I heard were in Sonic 3, Angel Island Act 1 goes from being a happy, relaxing and tropical theme to a serious, dangerous and pretty sad one in act 2, that surprised me a lot at the time.
I also like when they do the opposite in a game, when a level is long, it has many phases, but the music prevails throughout it, it gives me the feeling that I am progressing and the level is evolving, it is the same level as before, but I'm no longer in the place where I started, it gives me a feeling of adventure! Unlike when they add specific music for each section of the level, it feels like I'm in a completely different place, ruining the mood (kinda) and you no longer feel that world building adventure feel.

I’ve never thought about my favorite jump sound effect before, but the one that appears in my head is Sly’s jump across the Sly Cooper series. Mainly just because of the feeling of thievery and evasion. In the immortal words of Bentley: “Jump and hit the circle button”.

I was relistening to Wii U system music a few days back. I was actually pleasantly surprised how much care they put into it. There's even music specifically made for the option to transfer data. The transfer settings is very groovy and then the music that plays during the transfering itself is a carnaval/march sound akin to something like Pikmin's music. I'm really hoping the Switch 2 brings menu music back to the field.

Sometimes tracks that are reused in later games for different situations don't fit at all. When Neptunia Sisters VS Sisters uses Last Hymn, that's not the case. It already was a very ominous track, but then it plays for some of the darkest points in the late game and the penultimate dungeon as if to say "things will get really, *really* bad here".
For an example of pleasant audio that isn't reused, the New Mecha Soldiers' death voice clips. "You have no future. You have no-no-no..." bonus points for being exclusive to the models fought in the flashback as Ziri doesn't say this.

The sound of blowing wind is the BEST atmospheric/ambient backdrop sound there is. It combines a sense of stoicism with a sense of foreboding, like you know something's about to go down and you have no option but to face it resolutely.
I actually don't mind the lack of music on the Switch menu. Much as I love me some good music, sometimes it's good to have some silence for a bit, too.

I don't think it's nostalgia about Tiny Toons, just a few days ago I was talking about it with a family member xD on the Sega Genesis, the music of the first forest level and the cave levels are amazing to me, not only do they sound objectively good , but they capture incredibly well the essence and personality of the series AND the level they are setting all in one! Konami did wonders with IPs back in the day 💛🧡❤️
A personal favorite from another game is the little music that plays when you defeat a boss in Kid Dracula (from NES and GB, another Konami game) because it doesn't sound victorious, rather it sounds somewhat mocking, rather than being music that means That you triumphed, it sounds more like the boss lost, that always makes me laugh xD
By the way, in Buster Bust Loose I always love the train stage music ❤ the Tiny Toon theme is already so happy, and that remix is so energic and wacky, fills me with joy everytime :D

A personal recommendation for one of these is Super Monkey Ball Step & Roll, for a mediocre spinoff built around a gimmicky motion control device, they put far too much effort into the soundtrack. For an example, watch a playthrough of any of the game's 7 worlds, then listen to the credits. Nothing else felt so damn satisfying to listen to in my entire gaming history.
