  • Now, I'm what you'd call a Video Game Music nut, I probably spent more time listening to VG Music than anything else on CZcams.
But other the years, I've encountered many sound effects and songs that nearly made me lose my hearing. Grab your earplugs, and keep your pointer over that volume control, because once again, I'm covering even more of the most obnoxious and downright irritating assaults on the ears that I've encountered.
Anything from horrible music to annoyingly repetitive sound effects may be included. No non-licensed games will be featured. Warning: some of my choices may be opinion-based.

I nearly spit out my drink when I heard that line. Grandia's voice acting is bad, but it's entertainingly bad, kind of like the original Deus Ex (even if the corny voice acting does undermine the game's serious tone).

It makes me think of a clip I've seen of early Dynasty Warriors voice acting. "You flaming IDIOT! Take THIIIIS!" "Feel the power of my...MaaAAAaagiiIIIiiic!" (I will go to my grave saying it sounds like an overacting ProtonJon pretending to be vaguely angry about...something.) English voice acting can _truly_ be a treat, even if ironically so at times, it's so often worth giving at least one listen to.

I have a Wallpaper Engine background that plays most of the music used in the Chao Gardens between the Sonic Adventure games. Every time I hear the SA2 Chao Lobby music (which is now a lot), I hear the voice sample they use where the guy says "Layin' the wax and spinning the sound" and I HAVE to say it out loud, I can't just hear it, I have to say it. There's an amount of torment yet total satisfaction from it. It's like a curse.

While I will concur that some of Phantom Hour Glass's music was half-baked, you cannot die the ocean theme and the final boss theme-specially Bellum phase 1 were excellent. Even the Ghost Ship theme, when you are hunting it down initially is remarkably atmospheric.
The DS did not have the greatest soundchip. Most of the music was MIDI with some sampling, whereas the first two Gameboy's were wave-synths and one sampling channel. In many cases, MIDI was not used to its fullest capability whereas 8-bit wave-synths were pushed to their limits because the music did not take up much memory.

My dad used to play the song a lot on his piano, and he added coin collection sound effects and the 1-Up jingle at some points to spice up the song. The "added part ruining the orginal song for me" has happened to me in Zelda, appropiately enough. Four Swords Adventures extends several of the songs from ALttP, to the point that whenever I hear Hidden Forest/Death Mountain instead of Realm Of The Heavens it just feels incomplete to me. Same for every boss theme. Thanks to ALBW it's also happened again to the same soundtrack as the two games each take the extended songs in different directions.
More "traditional" annoying sound design from Zelda had been in my mind recently as the release of Arzette led me to check up the soundtrack of the CDi trilogy. While two of them hold up, Zelda's Adventure doesn't. This is partly due to it going for environmental noises in the overworld. When you get to a dungeon, you realize that there's a brief time interval before the track actually plays... only then I realize many of them aren't that big of a step up from the overworld. The second dungeon in particular just has horribly distorted circus music that stop being creepy and just ends up irritating. The cherry on top is Ganon's boss theme, which I always try to listen to but apparently the obnoxiously loud electric shock SFX that doesn't let you hear the main melody is actually part of the track itself.

The good thing I like from the Galar one, is because the cheers doesn't overwhelm the song they are just a great part of the music without taking the spotlight, meanwhile in the Paldea one, the cheers just want to become the music... which is not very pleasant to hear.

And the pinch part is embedded into the song itself, so I can't even add the Gym Leader theme to my playlist, and I like the theme aside from the part with the cheering.
Ah, whatever. The SV Gym Leader pinch theme is still better than the launch versions of the Elite Four and Champion themes, which were so bad I'm afraid to search for the songs now even though iirc the songs have been fixed

16:16 I hear the reason why the sound mixing is off is that a lot of games made some parts of it louder so the Dreamcast itself would distort it, but newer consoles actually make it that loud so it doesn't have the same effect.
Also, didn't you talk about something similar in the last Leave My Ears Alone?

  • @meloelebi1996
    @meloelebi1996 Před 3 měsíci +1

It's possible the important item theme is actually a combination of the regular item theme and the first four notes of the Link's Awakening cave theme. Since that theme is also a reoccurring motif along with the Ballad of the Windfish, (It's in most, possibly all the dungeon themes, the miniboss theme, & the compass sound to likely represent the nightmares) the Oracle games may have just taken it out and considered it an LA thing leaving the cave version and the maybe the compass.

The important item jingle actually IS in the Oracle games: it plays when you get an Essence at the end of a dungeon!
The Fairies Woods theme is super annoying, though, and I swear, it's louder than the other songs in the soundtrack, as if they were trying to annoy EVERYONE around the vicinity!
As for Gourmet Race, it's like those people only know the series through Super Smash Bros, where that song gets a lot of exposure, which doesn't help that it was the song that played for Kirby's stage in the first Smash Bros game! Personally, it also doesn't help that it's not even my favorite song of the Kirby series!

The portable Zeldas are quite the mixed bag when it comes to music. I'm glad I never tried Phantom Hourglass but its sequel Spirit Tracks has some great tunes like the field theme, Byrne's theme and the Demon Train battle. My personal least favorite in the GB games is probably the Crown Dungeon of Oracle of Ages- shrill and samey throughout the annoying maze of switches, locks and keys. And yet, Oracle of Seasons gives us the excellent Dancing Dragon Dungeon, Unicorn's Cave and Ancient Ruins all in a row.
Then there's Link Between Worlds, which deftly remixes the same jingle for 7 different dungeons depending on the theme with my favorites being Dark Palace and Desert Palace:

So glad I quit this shoddy shite when I did! I pray Palworld and others scare them back into competency, or better still, irrelevancy.

Pokemon's had a history of music quality being all over the place, really. There's some good stuff like Viridian City and Lavender town in Gen I, pretty much everything in Gen II, and over half the music from Gen III, but the limitations of the original Gameboy and later DS really harmed so much of Pokemon's music. Red and Blue you can clearly hear the compositions banging up against the limits of the synth chip and four voice limitation. And Diamond and Pearl can be outright irritating at times, with so many instruments sounding thin and ruining otherwise great compositions like the Gen IV battle theme or the legendaries battle theme. It really contrasts heavily against the few tracks that overcome the thin sound like Eterna Forest, or Stark Mountain. Gen V tries so hard to overcome it, only to really be pushed back down when the improved sound capabilities of the 3DS let Gen VI and VII go nuts.

Never understood, why Phantom Hourglass' soundtrack sounded the way it did, considering the composers behind this game worked on a bunch of other Nintendo series with great soundtracks like Mario Kart, Pokémon Stadium, Splatoon etc. Guess it really might've just been a rush job or something...

I don't mind the SV final Pokémon theme - I much prefer it over the chaotic noodling that is the standard theme (One of the few tracks in SV that I'm not that fond of) - but I do wish it was longer. Then again, I have to admit, I rarely hear more than two loops, because I kinda just...crush the gym leaders. Even their aces don't last long!
I don't do online competitive so I wouldn't have occasion to find out about that issue with the music there...but I probably wouldn't have found out anyway because I'd pick literally any other track over the gym leader track!
I'd still take either one over Fairie Woods, though. Bad 8-bit music is the worst, because that tinny sound GRATES, and when it's off-key, it sounds REALLY off-key.
Wow...never played Phantom Hourglass, and I don't think I missed much if the music is any indication of the effort. The original game felt like it tried harder.
The Gourmet Race thing in SMM2 might not be so bad if they all didn't sound like dog shit. Ye gods.
Your Grandia bit reminds me how much of the 'bad voice acting' problem of that era is specifically English voice acting. Like, Mega Man 8's voice acting is infamous enough that I need not go into detail - but if you listen to the Japanese voices, they actually sound pretty great! I guess maybe they didn't really budget for English VAs or know how to get them or something...maybe didn't budget for English scriptwriting either, because sometimes the scripting is just as terrible (Sonic Adventure says hi!).

SV Gym Leader Final Pokemon theme is definitely inferior to the SwSh theme but the chanting never bothered me. Although you ain't alone when it comes to Galar's Last Stand being better than Unova's. As for Fairies' Wood: It's definitely annoying like the mission but for some reason, it didn't bother me completely. Also I'm definitely getting Family Guy vibes.
Regardless, irksome is still irksome and I'd definitely lose my fucking mind if I had to listen to those tunes for over 10 minutes.

7:07 no wonder this entry had some of the lowest amount of 2d zelda players (debatable because i just guessed from the dual releases, i don't know if both their numbers were consistent, because Pokemon players didn't all have the good mood for 2 cartridges. and weirdly Capcom just handled the distribution just like Capcom handled Rockstar games releases in Japan at that time ). It is a lengthy game and intro, outro were pretty drawned. But fuck it, why does Nintendo had to do it in a bootleg game bgm composing way?

I never really enjoyed SV's gym theme, it was just kinda there and didn't do much for me; the only time it was good was during Ryme because music/rapping was her whole thing. Also yeah Gourmet Race is severely overused.
To me, I'm a bit surprised you've never covered a Xenoblade game in this series yet, I find it amusing.
I recently finished playing XC2 and hearing everyone constantly talk over one another was both grating and hilarious in equal measure. There's almost no time where someone isn't talking over another unless there's genuine silence. Makes me think of the Grandia 1 part you mentioned where everyone also says their attack voice lines, but imagine all that happening in real time with three different characters and who knows how many enemies that could be fighting you.

I disagree so strongly about the lack of hype in Scarlet and Violet. I didn't even remember the Unova games had a change of music for the last pokemon, while the hype in Scarlet is so strong for me. And well, it has the best OST from all Pokemon games imo (and IS the best Pokemon Game to me, period - it's the only game in the series that made me cry from awe).
I DO confirm the Donald noise was torture though!

Funny you haven't mentioned the Crown Dungeon. While not as bad as the Fairy Forest, it's certainly annoying and I often mute the GBA when playing that dungeon. Also, remind me, have you mentioned Harmony of Dissonance before? The sound quality is so freaking garbage, it's almost as bad as that awful Buffy game. This is where I learned to sometimes mute the console and play some Heavy Metal. Cradle of Filth is a great companion to that game (or any Castlevania, but most of them have good music), if you like growls.

One of my unpopular opinions is that I actually... kinda like the soundtrack of Harmony of Dissonance. The sound quality itself isn't great, but the melodies at their core are great. I'd argue the sound quality adds to the demented atmosphere of the game in some way.

Maybe with something that's stale and overdone, don't publish it. Or maybe:
"I know it's overdone, and I apologize. Next time I upload something in this particular field (e.g. music levels in MM2), it *will* be something that's more original." Depending on the field in question (based on how flooded it is), *definitely* make that original thing now; you're basically obligated.
The person who said "but this music is so good" comes across as making flimsy excuses, and they aren't even trying to make up for it.
