- It took roughly 4 years of development and 2 additional years of planning, but it’s finally here: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. And on this episode of Beta64, we’re going to learn where the idea originated from, find differences in early footage, and figure out why the game was delayed so much. Also, there's those scrapped spaceships, motorcycles, and electric guitars. Those were a thing.

Looking back at it, I’m glad the game was pushed so far back. If it was released in 2015 or 2016, it wouldn’t nearly be what it is today. They really wanted to take their time and perfect it. I can appreciate that majorly.

Limey Yoshi I don’t remember the exact steps but I did it on my iPhone and MacBook. You have to download a video off of yt and then convert the file to something that I don’t remember and then trim it in ITunes I think and then drag it into your phone. If I can find the website I used I’ll link it.

You know, there’s something interesting about the lighting in the 2014 gameplay footage. It really makes Hyrule look more supernatural and mystical. It’s hard to explain, but I just kind of find it interesting. It looks cool to me, for some reason.

nope, that would probably sound really weird. the interface is, in fact, completely translated and the story cutscenes have english voices but dutch subtitles.

With a lot of these types of games I think that the development MO is usually to start with way more than you think will be viable on the hardware and then pare it back until you find the max it can handle without destroying the frame rate.

You all completely missed the point.
The fact that they even touched minor details like that in a game this big shows the amount of attention they put into fixing this game. All those little things DO add up.
And him saying "I've never seen changes like this" isn't that exaggerated--for all you know that may be a first for him. He is somewhat over hyping it, but they're still important changes nonetheless. The amount of work they put into this (so much that they reworded what seems to be a huge chunk of the dialogue) really shows how much passion went into this game.
So in the e3 demo the old man seems a bit rude saying that it's not your concern etc they changed this so he'd sound nicer to more fit his character

It would also give BotW a good reason for a reset because Link already has all abilities, so getting Link badly damaged against ressurected Ganon trying to protect Zelda makes ALOT of sense. And they cannot just get Link healed again by the ressurection chamber would take too long and Mipha must have left Link along with the other Champions to finally rest peacefully. Leaving Zelda to do things on her own and a reasonable reset of powers, weapons and Armor
Hey maybe between her adventure she might go out and get items to get Link healed up the best she can via dungeons

The textures, grass and resolution is also better in the E3 version. I'm eager to see what they do with the sequel, now that they don't have the WiiU holding them down anymore.

@@darkendjoker24309 I feel like cause wiiu isn't holding it back, and with more use of the engine, more understanding of switch tech, I do think botw2 will look better, definitely textures at least. From rumours it was a very rushed port, from IBM PC to tegras arm SoC. Which does effect stuff, just like la noire was built purposely for PS3 to that's why switch struggles... And if you look at the games they are basically the same which considering switch has a lot more to give is a shock. You could easily get better textures due to the more ram.

So 4 minutes into rewatching this video, they talk about how they considered zelda being a main character,
she is SO going to be playable in botw2
They already set up her protagonist inner conflict from the first game: she couldn't control the triforce like the princesses before her
(the fact that she has the entire force is pretty huge on its own)
Plus she got an outfit thats fit for combat, AND her short hair is probably easier for the animators to control the physics

Other than the four swords, Triforce heroes, and the Hyrule Warriors games, only link has been playable, now youre just getting youre hopes us
@@tadstrange1465 It probably will be. You definitely won’t be playing her as much as you play as Link but I think that she’ll still be playable. We might get something similar to how MJ was a bit playable in the Spider-Man game, except you’ll probably actually be able to do fighting with Zelda.

robert Lafondue in all honesty, it's really fun to ride around on. I was SUPER apprehensive because I felt the same way. But given the Ancient technology present in the game with the guardians and Divine Beasts, a motorcycle isn't too terribly far fetched

That 'metallic' sound when hitting an enemy with an arrow is still in the game. It's when you strike a critical hit (with an headshot for example).
It is not the exact same sound though, I think. It doesn't sound like metal, rather like a sharp violin string or sth.

Yep. The green bar was stamina, NOT magic. It wasn't depleting because they are showing a dev build with "unlimited" stamina. The function was simply deactivated for the purpose of the video.
The green bar was always stamina. They turned it to a circle similar to Skyward Sword.

Hey everyone! I'm from the future, the age of calamity known as 2020.
After watching this video for a third time in the past years, I can confirm you that Nintendo took the wiser decision in delaying BOTW. No one would've liked if BOTW ended up being the example of why a game shouldn't be rushed in its release date. Cyberpunk 2077 is now suffering the consequences because of that, so we all should be thankful for what BOTW is going to be remembered in the future.
That’s a very interesting comparison, and I think it’s a fair one to make.
Both games promised a lot, but where Cyberpunk 2077 failed to deliver, BOTW delivered WAY more then it promised
The colors are more natural in the final version. Congratulations Nintendo for the courage to leave the hot strong colors and take this visual more natural.
it's funny, i think we've experienced one of those valleys they talk about
in pixel games, primary colors are just necessary and sensible... however, a few snes games really pushed the palettes and gave us some very interestingly muddled and beautifully realistic sprite textures.
by the time we got proper 3d (not that raw snes starfox kind) we had lighting and textures, so the colors weren't an absolute.. and by just using the raw engine and making choices about the textures and light sources, you got something pretty realistic (even n64 games would look like "real (folded up pieces of paper) objects"), compared to things like rockman dash where the textures are aliased, like 3d pixel art.. much like minecraft would end up being (though it later got its own more subtle lighting engine)
but they overdid it in twilight princess, and it got so realistic and BROWN that you couldn't see what you were looking at. and the blur filter didn't help
so for SS they went more colorful again, but the wii didn't quite have the effects processing to make that look like anything but a world made of candy. certainly nice, but..
what breath of the wild has done is made things bright AND simple AND detailed with very SUBTLE uses of effects (like how characters all seem to have white lighting all the time) and it still feels realistic because the more intensive graphic effects sell it (sunbeams, etc)
In fact you don't even notice any of it, it's so natural, until something suddenly interrupts it.. like the area that's perma-darkness.
Honestly, I think the super bright blue sky in the footage from the Game Awards 2014 looks better than the sky now, I feel as if the blue from the Champions tunic and stuff should've been incorporated a bit more

@Enno I think Urbosa is pretty strong once you know how to chain the electric attacks. Her final combo deals extremely heavy damage in a huge area and is kinda broken, especially with the instant recharge after the attack ends.

Twilight Princess had an unused magic bar, so don't simply assume that in the early state of the game it was an actual stamina bar, I'm pretty sure this game got the same treatment as Twilight Princess with the magic bar being scrapped out and being replaced by a stamina bar that serves a completely different purpose.

I find Nintendo takes great pride in the Zelda series, preferring to delay deadlines rather than make a subpar game.
The best part about how much time and effort was dedicated to the physics and new designs is that Breath of the Wild 2 can focus entirely on new features and story. They get all of the hardest stuff out of the way and deliver an even better experience.

BOTW landed what I feel to be the best art style for the Zelda franchise. I hope they build on it for the next game.
I remember, during Christmas, I think last year? my mom got me a switch and this game with it, and I remember when we got everything working, I played that game until like 11:30 PM or somewhere around there. (I think) that game at the time, had about the *best* graphics I've seen, next to destiny 2 and Mario galaxy 1. and though how much it frustrated me during some parts of the game, I still consider it one of the top 5-10 games I've played, mostly cause as a person that's been playing Zelda since I was like 5 or 7 and seeing Zelda go from a semi medium sized 3d game, to a MASSIVE map with free roaming enabled, the ability to COOK (something I wanted for a long time), and that you can get yourself your own house & horse. I can definitely say that Zelda in this game, (and hopefully in the next game) is that Zelda over the years, has most definitely made several improvements. you may criticize me for my opinions, I'm just happy about the improvements on this game.

Oh thank God they trashed the electric guitar idea. I was fed up with that shit in Hyrule Warriors. That kind of sound gets really annoying when played for too long. So happy they went with the piano. It's a perfect instrument for conveying a variety of emotions.

"Still got the blues" by Gary Moore. "Wasting Love" by Iron Maiden, to name a few. It's not because some instrument is often associated with "emotion x, y or z" that it's only capable of that. It's a narrow-minded view, to say the least.
2 Things:
1: Now that they announced BOTW 2 (or the sequel, since it doesn't have a proper title), this video gives us a heads-up: When Nintendo eventually gives us a release date, just add 5 years to it and you'll know the real one.
2: As someone else said, I wish I could experience BOTW for the first time. I think that's my only strong grip about it (there are others, but besides the story, minor details mostly), that most of the wonder that comes from playing it can only be on the first playthrough or by forgetting about the game for a long while then coming back. Even then, this is more of a personal preference, I know people that gladly restart their game (and love the story).

The first 3 hours of botw were hell to me, after the opening scene it’s extremely difficult. This was also when I was extremely sick during Christmas. But I loved this game, I love this game because after getting super strong I went to the first guardian that I ever faced, I destroyed him. Amazing

@@cashwin45 it was a totally new art style, Link's hair was longer/looser than usual, and the main female protagonist also has blonde hair, so it wasn't that strange. especially since they'd been talking about "rethinking Zelda conventions" constantly leading up to the teaser.

His body shape is also definitely softer and not as built, which is not typical of other Links or really any mainstream video game guy at all. Plus, the blue tunic. This is the first LOZ game ever where the green tunic is not a definitive feature.
Imo BOTW's long, wild hair was the least of the confusing parts, had he looked like HW1's Link with BOTW's same hair it would be a no brainer that it was Link.
But recently rumors of a game with a playable Zelda and of course "Linkle" being a character on everyone's minds, honestly the confusion was likely genuine.

Yea I use to always talk with my friends how a future link would be in modern times and it seems they are slowly going towards that. With the addition of a motorcycle and sci fi tech. Cant wait for the dante esque guitar. I trust Anouma.

With the world changing at a so fast pace, Zelda is one of the things that take me back to the warmth and mist of the old days, with nature, swords, legends and castles. I wouldn't like that taken away from us on Zelda universe as it's being in the increasingly instantaneous world, but I guess you can't fight against change after all. The general public interest switch according to the times we're on.

"This armor has built-in electricity resistance thanks to its source material--an ancient marvel called "rubber." Such technology does not exist in this modern age." so does that mean this zelda is so far in the future that all of our technology was lost? or is this just not based on earth at all but a different planet with a different timeline. idk its just weird that they call rubber an ancient technology.

My favorite difference is the lighting changes. In every build outside of the final one, the lighting is so much harsher and everything is so much more saturated. The reason this impressed me is because lighting and color is not easy to change. The fact that it was adjusted so drastically between the demo and the final cut is very impressive and shows how much dedication went into this game.

6:37 I disagree with Aonuma so much in that statement. It was the sole purpose of the gamepad in the game, not even the inventory, and they completely removed it. So what is the point to even have a second screen? Is like Aonuma wanted both versions to feel the same, and he took out features from the original game to accomplish that so no one could say "Botw on X console is better".

TBH, I think that was their acknowledgement that the gamepad screen was a failed experiment. It divided the player's attention in games like Starfox Zero. I think the feedback from that game was why they removed it. Having it as an alternative to your TV screen is it's best feature.
This late into the Wii U's lifespan they could afford to abandon the gimmick, rather than try forcing it onto people. They learned from Skyward Sword's mistakes in so many ways.
For the record, I have the Wii U version. I think it's more stable than the switch version and I'm glad it still came out on this console so I wasn't trapped into getting a switch right away.
I for one i'm glad the gamepad is used only as a standard controller in BoTW. Having to split between the TV and the gameplad KILLED starfox zero for me :(
The gamepad screen was great for drawing, inventory management and other things that require (quick and) precise placement, though..
After beating the game, I am actually glad they went with only having one screen. The 2nd screen Gimmick has worn off for me and including it in this game would only be an annoyance and take away from the experience.
