- Today we're back with another Marvel vs Capcom 2 character overview, and this time we're talking about Roll! Widely considered the worst character in MvC2, and one of the worst fighting game characters in general, Roll is very weak but she does have a few things going for her! We'll talk about her combos, supers, and some basic strategies for the character and good assists to use with her. Then we'll show some matches against Justin Wong where he actually DESTROYED me with Roll!

The worst thing about her is how much her mediocre sprite clashes with ever other thing in the game, despite the fact this sprite was made for the game.
Yeah wtf is her idle pose? It looks like she should be holding a book or a clipboard or smthng, but she doesn't have one, so her hands are just kind of... hanging there.

I dunno anything about marvel vs Capcom, but the fact that the sprite seems to be in a completely different style is kinda funny. All the others have detailed shading and everything, but hers is just solid black outlines and flat colors. Almost makes me think they genuinely ran out of time to finish it
My favourite thing about Roll in these games is how when Tatsunoko vs Capcom made her actually an extremely decent character people still dismissed her for a while because they were so used to her being the worst of the worst lmfao.
In Tatsunoco there was a glitch with roll if you did her sweep super while standing on a bucket of water it would double 100% of her damage output making her the most broken character in that game. I loved her in tatsunoco.
Ya' see, the problem is she didn't have a BROOM in this game! She's a cleaning robot! What's she gonna do with a used Mega Buster?! Give her a broom and inform her that her opponents are dirt.
...then...it's over.
TvC Roll is probably one of the best redesigns of a character for a fighting game. Going from a really bad version of MvC Mega Man to a completely reworked character who's pretty fun to use.

Roll is pretty decent in TVC. But it was the vs Capcom game that brought Zero into the mix. At least by the time it localized. First off it's Zero, second he was really good.
So needless to say most people didn't really give her a second look for a while.
Its hilarious to me that even Justin Wong needs doom assist to make this character work.

@@Space_Australian yea a lot of top tier assists in this game are pretty obviously bonkers. Sentinel drones just kinda control the entire ground, and Tron Bonne's projectile does like 30% on its own for no reason.
I mean, Doom assist could make me as a character work. The top tier assists were all broken in their own ways.
Visually speaking, going from Sentinel to Roll gave me whiplash. They don't look like they're in the same game at all.

Let's also not forget that she has the joke character effect. Her status as a terrible character means that she has little meta developed and the pressure on her opponent to win is significantly increased. In other words, your opponent has to deal with a character that could pull out tricks they never knew about and feel a need to win since nobody wants to say that they lost to Roll.
Same mindset going against a little Mac in Smash.

Even in MvC 1 this was a thing. I played in arcades when it was out, and my main team was Roll/Zangief. People would hate me for that.
By the way, against the final boss in that game? Roll was NASTY good.

I would pick MegaMan, roll and servebot just to have the smallest possible team.
Toro and Kuro in SFxT are pretty bad. Lowest damage and very tiny health bars (plus horrible range on normals)

That and after the first update. They were put behind a pay wall till you pay 20 extra.
Megaman and Pac-Man were also pretty dismal.
I'm glad Justin actually used Roll instead of treating his team like it only had 2 people in it. It seems more in the spirit of things. :)

I'd still say Twelve is, arguably, the worst fighting game character Capcom's ever made. Roll is really bad, but this is MvC2, 75% of the cast might as well be garbage compared to the higher tiers.
Sean is definitely worse in 3rd Strike. Although at the very least Sean had the benefit of being good in 2nd Impact.

@NonZeroVolta It’s debatable if Remy, Sean, or Twelve is the worst.
Remy’s zoning is really bad in a game like 3rd Strike where fireballs aren’t that great and you can just parry them and take no damage.
Sean’s special moves are abysmally bad in terms of their frame data, with some of them being completely useless and are better off just not being used.
Twelve has awful frame data, terrible special moves, only one super that is at least okay, terrible buttons, and just feels unfinished overall.
Personally, I think Sean is the best of the three, and Twelve is the worst.
I always found it weird how she's so small compared to mega man. They're about the same height in regular mega man games like mega man 8 which her outfit is from

The only reason I played her in MvC1 was to hear her theme mid-battle. Doing Jin combos with _TSUTAETAI... KONO OMOI_ on your back is worth having to actually use her.

I have trouble believing there could be a worse fighting game character than SSB Ganondorf. No combos, everything is slow, no jump height whatsoever, no combo breakers, no range, no projectile, slowest run speed in the game, and he's a giant character so easy combo food.

@@zantetsuken-zero fighting games are games in which the characters are facing each other and every fighting game has dash, backdash, and crouch as basic options that are important because every fighting game has high low mix. In Melee wave dash back and crouching are only used because they have glitches unique to melee that have nothing to do with high low mix, moving relative to the opponent etc. I’ve played more melee than any fighting game but it’s simply not a fighting game. If you look at the games jmcrofts plays then smash, you should be able to see smash isn’t part of the club there’s no combo meter no combo mechanics etc.
Damn, ending got me wondering if there's a Juggernaut rundown. That damage is filthy!

I love when a character gets their own trash tier all to themself.
I like it when the bottom tier shares some common feature, not inherently linked to performance.
Smash Bros often having a "Triforce Tier", where Link, Ganondorf, and Zelda all hang out, for being atrocious in their own, unique ways, for example.

In Gannon and Zelda were added in Melee, but in that game Zelda was bottom tier while Gannon was mid-tier because he ripped off the moveset of Caption Falcon, who was a Top Tier. In Brawl, Gannon was the single worst character in the game, the worst character in the franchise, and maybe the worst character in all of platform fighters, and maybe, just maybe, The Worst Fighting Game character OF ALL TIME!! In Smash 4, link was a mid tier, Zelda was bottom tier, and so was Gannon. Now in Ultimate, Gannon is in contention for the worst character in the game, Link is in A-B tier depending on who you ask, and Zelda is in C tier. Some of my information could be wrong, but I know for a fact the were never all in contention for the worst character in the game in any game they were all in. This wasn’t meant as an attack, though I definitely could see it being taken that way, just me asking a question as to what you were talking about, because I always love expanding my knowledge on different subjects, and especially my favorite franchise, Smash.

I absolutely love seeing people do work with low tier characters, and generally unpopular picks. I main Cyber Sub in MKX, and I always find myself giddy when people select him. Ferra/Torr being considered the worst in that game as well. It always has me excited to see the love for a character that just doesn’t get enough.
ferra/torr ruthless is so fun! u can get like 70% damage combos with them lol.
@@Meansoduck it just goes to show how even the lowest tier character in MKX could do BIG work if they got the momentum. I love Ferra/Torr. They were one of my favorite new characters. Just like Kollector in MK11.

Not very often, and I didn't win all that much compared to my other actual mains. But Ferra/Torr grew on me as literally no one else played them
@@MiniBlackWaltz It isn’t the wins that matter casually. It’s about the fun. But if you’re snagging wins with a character you aren’t as good with as others, that’s a whole other victory in its own right. It’s nice finding a niche in a fighter.
Roll was the first character I ever picked in Marvel vs Capcom game. I remember thinking it was so cool to have her in the game!

This is insane to watch honestly. I feel like jmcrofts is very good at this game for the amount of time he spares with Justin Wong and Justin was still able to to make Roll work. That's just impressive if you ask me. I don't think this shows how bad jmcrofts is (I don't think he's bad mind you), but how good Justin Wong is
Having played... way more Roll than I care to admit, I definitely think there are far worse characters in fighting games. She's definitely terrible, but not irredeemably so like some characters I've seen. I admit it... I enjoy using her and probably always will. I definitely think she was better in MvC1, but that's a different story.
It's a complicated issue, as you said. One of the main complications is that this isn't a 1v1 fighting game, it's a 3v3 one, so you're not typically talking about a single character in a vacuum.
She's bad, but there's still SOME stuff you can do with her in the right teams; as opposed to someone like Third Strike's Twelve, who is bad all on its own with nothing to save it.
Interestingly, I'm thinking that if Justin's ratio system catches on, we might see an uptick in Roll usage for certain teams, which would be an exciting change.

It's hard to have a completely unviable character in a team game since you can just put them in a top tier shell and have them do decent work tbh, they can't be bad in the way someone in a badly balanced 1v1 game is bc you can always rely on your top tier shell to pull out the win, and even if she's actively making your team worse, it's still a team that can win.
At least in MvC1 you get to hear her music. The music in MvC2 is just bad. :/

@@Lavender_FGC It's a matter of opinion. I do kinda see where Krunk is coming from, though. People that got used to the energetic, character-driven themes in the other games of the series might be driven off by the more abstract and somewhat meandering jazz tunes of MvC2.

I just want to say: I think that Marvel vs. Capcom caught my attention because of the visual differences of their characters. It breaks the barriers of the unthinkable, just as Smash Bros. hasn't done. I think the first time I played I did it because Rockman attracted me. and after meeting Roll, I became obsessed.

I think the MvC tag system means that a character gets assists to flesh them out, but like ... you could just play any other of the characters that you aren't using an assist for and probably do better.

The reason why Roll is considered one of the weakest is because when you pit a top tier Roll player to a top tier Player of any character, having Roll in the party will always have the notion that the Roll user has a handicap. For example, I used to play Rock and Roll for the heck of it during my Marvel vs Capcom days against other players because I know I can beat them using those characters but once the other party brings in the Big Guys, that's where I'm forced to really go all out. It's basically up to the player if he/she can make Roll shine or not, but when against top tier players as well, then your're asking to be bullied.
She isn't the weakest! Take that back! She's strong and very brilliant, the reason why it's because it was all just lies! And this guy is lying about her! And lying is wrong anyways.
It’s been so long since I played this game that I didn’t even know roll was a playable character.
That being said I believe roll was probably supposed to be a handycap character who’s main purpose was to help pros hold back in casual matches without forcing them to hold back.

The first time i lose to roll is not by her attacks but by her kawaii theme song and i was charmed to my death.
I just want to point out that he decided to compare Roll's DEF stat to Sentinel, which is a bit unfair since Sentinel is bulky. Would of made more sense if compared it to someone like, Ken, Ruby Heart or even Morrigan.

Melee Bowser, Neco arc chaos, and Twelve are the only other comparable bottom tier characters I can think of from games that are still being played.
It's not really being played, but P. Jack from Tag 1 is so bad for a character in a legit fighting game.

The only time I ever played this game was at a friend's house and one of the only 2 people who knew how to play the game was bodying everyone else with roll with a shit eating grin on his face. Now I know why.
Not much of a fighting game enthusiast, but it was a big part of my childhood. Glad the community is devoted and continues to support each other to keep the genre going.

@@greatheightsu Megaman still looks a bit out of place, but not as bad as Roll, and Tron Bonne looks fine. To be honest, they just reused a lot of the sprites from other games for MvC2. Morrigan arguably looks even worse than Roll.

Even if Roll had absolutely 0 strengths, I’d still main her. Idk why but I love characters that are considered “Bad” as I just find it funny to get good at a character that isn’t the best/not the meta, and then just surprise the hell outa people. It’s so nice.
