    Curiously, recently one guy broght significance to Articuno as a relevant meta threat. Freezai done a video about it. Articuno showed itself a incredible Blizzard spammer because of the release of Alolan Ninetales + Aurora Viel. The thing is Gen 9 broght the defense boost for ice pokemon in snowstorm, so it's bulkier than ever. Sheer Cold can bully any dondozo that appears.

    I can't wait for the Gen 2 video. Slowking has always been my favorite Pokémon, and somehow whenever the power creep tries to touch him my guy just keeps getting a small boost and blitzed past it. In Gen 5 he and Slowbro got Regenerator, in gen 8 he got a whole new cousin from Galar, and in Gen 9 when almost every Psychic-Type lose Teleport (even Slowbro, poor guy), my guy gets a brand new signature move that is even better than Teleport.

      Pros: Counters other weather
      Enables own snow plays
      Cons: Worse in trick room
      Worse against negative priority
      Incompatible with weather besides snow
      Worse against absolutely glacial pokemon
      Countering other weathers makes it pretty good, I can see that being worth more than losing to negative priority or really slow pokemon (a few of which Slowking actually does pretty well against if it can go first), but I don't think it either really climbs to dominance over the other.

    It's great to see how all these old pokemon are still viable.
    But there's one point I disagree on: Regional forms. Alona Ninetails isn't Ninetails and Hisui Arcanine isn't Arcanine. Don't get me wrong, I like these variants as much as the next guy, but they have different typing and potentially different movesets and abilities. At its core, those are different pokemon.

    I feel like your last statement shows just how power crept Pokémon is, when Pokémon such as Mew, a mythical Pokémon with a BST of 600 are now considered "Mediocre" in terms of almost all aspects except for the part where it can learn every TM in game is ridiculous to think about, so much so especially with stuff like Smogon's tiering that it feels like eventually by like gen 11-12 we'll see all time ubers like Kyoger, Giratina, and Zacian show up in the OU tier somehow.

    • @aprinnyonbreak1290
      @aprinnyonbreak1290 Před 10 dny +1

      Another good case is Arceus.
      120 in every stat makes it... kinda anemic offensively. Nobody ever runs an offensive arceus without boosting moves.
      120 speed is still pretty good though, and 120-120-120 bulk is still quite bulky.
      In general the ubers offensive stat benchmark of 150 is also not what it used to be, unless there's like a 120-130 base power move behind it.

  • @delta_power3049
    @delta_power3049 Před 2 měsíci +44

    Its worth remembering that in gen 1, Mewtwo had a base stat total of 744. Only 7 pokemon have had a higher bst; Ultra Necrozma with 754, Primal Groudon and Kyogre with 770, Mega Rayquaza and Mega Mewtwo X and Y with 780, and finally Eternamax Eternatus with 1125. Even after its loss of 64 points in Sp Def Mewtwo was at the top until Arceus.

      Was, I dont think is good enough. Mewtwo should get a buff. Raise his stats back to reflect what they were in gen 1, and give him a new signature ability. Something like, Savage Heart; his attacks whether physical or special always target whichever defense stat is lower on the opponent. If they are the same, the move works as normal.

    • @yungmuney5903
      @yungmuney5903 Před 2 měsíci +2

    And Mewtwo should be as strong as a Peak Legendary Pokemon that is nerf'd (as it's stated in DPP & BDSP that Legendary Pokemon are often weaker when caught)....
    And to artificially create a Pokemon of that level is actually pretty damn impressive....
    That also means that is canonically the highest level of power a trainer can actually use with the Pokemon (without magic).

    Hitmonchan: "Bob and Weave"; If This pokemon attacks first with a "punch" move, redirect any attack this turn to it's ally.

    Hitmonyama (based on Yoshiro Akiyama, like how Hariyama is, and the Sp.Def evolution), a Judo based Hitmon: "Debilitating Throws"; 'Throw" moves lock the opponent from switching the following turn.
    Hitmonzen; (based on meditation, name change can be on a famous fighter that turned to being a scholar or monk, Sp.Att); "Meditative Conditioning"; Contact moves against the pokemon have a 10%-20% chance of missing, rolled independently from normal accuracy checks.

    I want Parasect to get the Anihilape treatment. A bug ghost evolution with an upgraded base state total of 495 with 50 added to HP 10 to special defense and 30 to attack.
    Maybe even 485 with taking 10 away from speed. Allowing it to speed tie Torkoal.

    Even if you just need a tank to help round out your team, taking Venusaur isn't a bad option. It can be slow enough to use under trick room or using your opponents sun setter to your advantage. A bulky Venusaur, with Black Sludge, a Sun Boost while carrying Sludge Bomb, Sleep Power, Leech Seed and Synthesis can still be a major threat or switch in on some powerful moves to eat them up.

    Well with megas back for next Legends game and likely next generation - we can assume they gonna bring more gen 1 mons back into meta. I feel like gimmicks should also be talked, because at the end of the day, they will come back sooner or later - especially if they are fan favourite. Like we are definitely keeping Tera typings at least every few gens (BW3, if that happens, definitely will have that). And Megas may hopefully stay with us this time.

    I almost wish pokemon would intentionally make legendaries broken in their debut generation and then nerf them afterwords. Like you could even make it an in universe canon part of the lore where the respective legendaries are stronger in their own region and don’t have as much power outside their home turf. Then just do some standardized buff/nerf when they are or aren’t in their debut regions and you’d be able to have new pokemon feel impactful when they come out, but could overall have the list of pokemon across generations not need to trend upwards in power.

    I honestly hope that Tera is here to stay indefinitely. Even with Megas coming in Legends ZA. It has so much potential to constantly shift the meta to at least some degree. Simply because new threats can surface throughout the year as the previous ones want for counters. Add new Abilities and Moves to older Pokémon and we might reach one of the most diverse fields yet. Yes, there'll always be ones that rise above the rest. But with the sheer amount of possible strategies and Tera enabling previously unthinkable options for them? It's that much more interesting.

    I know nothing of the competitive pokemon world, but I always hoped my boy Tentacruel was considered a hidden gem from gen1. I mean surprisingly one of the fastest watertypes, huge specdef (maybe helpful against the typically specatk elecs and psys), could even be bred to have mirrorcoat as a countermove and raindish to combo with blacksludge to make it really hard to kill.
    But I'm probably overestimating strats I relied on in X&Y for a 3v3 all-water pokemon team to real 1v1 or 2v2 competitive mechanics.

    I'm glad you brought this up. Seeing the abilities of Mewtwo and Lugia not to mention that stat spreads compared to newer legendaries leaves a lot to be said. Call it "gen 1 favoritism" but gen 1 and 2 do have the most mons needing help. Another thing that has bothered me for years since I learned it. Why do all the starters not have the same BST? Why is Venusaur at 525 while Charizard is 534, etc? All starters should just have the same bst. Their moves, abilities and stat spread already differ them as is.

    It's a shame they haven't given Muk access to Neutralizing Gas. While I know it has been a nice exclusive, the original Muk card from the Fossil set has the Pokémon Power (Abilities), Toxic Gas. This made all other Powers turn off, just like Neutralizing. I think it would be fitting for Muk's Sticky Hold and A. Muk's Gluttony to be replaced with Neutralizing Gas.

    If you have to make the new legendary pokemon stronger so they won't feel "not legendary" or "disappointing" you're left with the inverse where old legendary pokemon feel not so legendary. I thought of a buff for Mewtwo btw where it's like Miraidon's ability except it sets psychic terrain and gets faster in psychic terrain. In all honesty though this would probably be incredibly game breaking but that's the point.

    I know it's funny coming from a guy with Dragonite in his name but I don't think Dragonite has ever been "irrelevant"
    It's either had some busted tech (terra, Z-Fly, Extremespeed introduction, Multiscale introduction, heavy duty boots/weakness policy uses)
    Or just been "Good"
    Maybe it's less relevant in vgc potentially but I think it's always been kinda threatening there as well
