    While I was in Michigan visiting family, I got my daughter hooked on mudlark videos including yours. It didn’t take a lot cuz she’s a history/archeology buff like her mom. I used to have a company that tore down old barns that were falling down and becoming a safety hazard. Unless a barn is used and maintained, they deteriorate quickly. Putting hay in them helps keep them from being blown down by strong winds. These barns were usually well over 100 yrs old. My favorite part was going through and finding antiques and old oil cans, bottles and enameled signs that were often put in these structures and forgotten. I truly understand and appreciate your enthusiasm for finding old and unique items. The wood we salvaged from the structures was repurposed or used to restore other barns from the same era. It’s fun watching all y’all

      Hello there, sounds like you found some awesome treasures. I can also just imagine the patina on the wood from those barns, so great that it had another life. We often find unusual pieces of ships timber from the many shipwrecks we find on the foreshore that would also look amazing to be repurposed. Take care and thank you for your support. 😃👍

    Oiioii Mudpies! What an amazing day in the dirt. Apart from the nettles, it looked like you enjoyed every minute of it. You found so many great things. I'm usually all about the pottery but I have two favorites this week that aren't pots. I love the little brown wonky bottle and the crystal blue bottle stopper. What a little beauty that stopper is. It sparkles like a jewel. I think you should go back there often! Next week should be fun with Kate and Fleur. • @f.k.burnham8491
    @f.k.burnham8491 Pƙed 2 lety +3

    Generally in an area where there are nettles, you will find Plantain plants. Pick the leaves, crush and wipe the juice on the nettle stings. It eliminates the stinging. I have used it myself, and it works! Old family folk remedy here in the U.S.
    Have you thought of using a table mounted orbital sander to smooth the bottle edges, or sanding disks mounted on a rotating faceplate?

    • @Mudpies
      @Mudpies  Pƙed 2 lety

      Great tip, I think we lost the plot a bit with all the bottles and forgot about dock leaf ointment! A bit tricky using an orbital sander as you need to keep the glass cool to avoid scarring and pitting so we use lots of water. Maybe there is a way of making this work?Take care 😀

    • @f.k.burnham8491
      @f.k.burnham8491 Pƙed 2 lety +1

      @@Mudpies If you used a drill motor with a long extension shaft, with the drill away and protected, I think you could feed a light stream of water against the revolving sanding disk and you would be OK. Also thinking of the possibility of using a cutting fluid like they use on lathes known as " Milk" here. or possibly a very light oil like they use in rock cutting. Possibly automatic transmission fluid? The fluid or oil can be filtered and reused many, many times.
      Just some thoughts.

    • @Mudpies
      @Mudpies  Pƙed 2 lety

      @@f.k.burnham8491 mmm nice idea you have got me thinking! I did wonder about using one of those circulating knife/tool sharpeners too as they use continuous water to cool. 👍

    • @f.k.burnham8491
      @f.k.burnham8491 Pƙed 2 lety

      @@Mudpies The problem I think you would find is that they generally have limited grit grades. I think just about any flat metal plate circular sanding device you can stick various sanding grit pads on should work. The sticky back sanding disks pads are fairly reasonable here.
      You don't want the backing plate for the sanding disk to be flexible.
      AHA! The backing plate could be the platter from an old turntable. Just epoxy paint the platter to prevent rust or corroding and find a collar or motor shaft to fit the center hole! Add a variable speed motor or drill to power it and Viola!

    Great adventure in the bottle dump. I had a thought regarding upcycling some of the broken cod bottles, and any other bottles that narrow towards the top; make some "bud vases too". Bud vases take many shapes, but they all narrow at the top. Extends possibilities for "cut downs" and maybe would save more of the designs and words on the bottles.

    Hi Josie & Andy You guys kinda changed it up a bit. Looks like you had a blast!!! Great bottle dump!! You guys found so much on the surface, it was amazing. Next time maybe you'll get a chance to do some serious digging and pull out some Belters. Looking forward to Kit & Caboodle next week.

    I loved all the finds but I have to admit to really liking wonky melted bottles. The new shapes that are made in the fire really interest me, especially knowing that there will never be another bottle the same. Thanks for your channel.

    Glad you had a good time, I know the dump well. The Lamploughs stopper would almost certainly have been from their Effervescing Pyretic Saline bottle (I have one minus stopper!). A well known quack cure of the time.

    Hello Josie and Andy,
    Thank you for introducing us to the Muddy Duckers. Going to check out their CZcams in a bit. (Looking forward to next week and the video with Kit and Caboodler)
    There was the comments about looking forward to being back in the mud as well as barnacle-less bottles; and I was wondering if digging was more or less satisfying?
    Loved the video. The melted meat juice bott is my favorite. đŸ«
    Thank you again as always and good luck on the next adventure! -JT

      Our pleasure JT. Next weeks Kit and Caboodle adventure will not disappoint ! We both like being out on the vast mudflats but it's also so peaceful being in the woods. Personally i do not miss cleaning off all the smelly mud and barnacles but the sense of isolation the mudflats gives you is quite amazing. Take care 😃👍

      @@Mudpies - Your description reminds me of when I first moved to Los Angeles and went to Mann’s Chinese Theatre. I spent the whole movie in the downstairs bathroom because the sea of people gave me a panic attack. Luckily the bathroom was quite nice.

      Thanks so much Jacque. Yes these are sites from Victorian times where solid household items such as bottles, cinders, stoneware and other odds and ends have been dumped by the local council. They have then become very overgrown but the history is preserved within them. Take care 👍🙂
