Black Swan is about the fear of losing the passion for your craft (music/dance/..) not just fear of the end.
This song is part of BTS's album series Map Of The Soul based on psychologist Carl Jung' theory that the mind is divided into 3: The Persona (what we show the outside), The Shadow (the fears we keep hidden) and The Ego (our true self and a combination of the previous two). In Map Of The Soul:7 BTS take you on a journey to understand yourself better. Both Black Swan and On are a part of the Shadow part. Black Swan discusses your fear while On is about facing that fear, acknowledging it and working with it to become a better version of yourself.
Highly recommend giving the entire album a listen.
Also like other people have said you should get to know the guys better with xcelest videos as well as watch them live. It's heard to believe but their live performances are even better.

This is one of my favorite songs. The James Corden performance blew me away and I started down the rabbit hole.
Suggestion: group and rank them by genre. You cannot rank them mixed because they are all different. Unlike other artists they only have one genre so its easier to pick a favorite.
Or no need to rank them at all but just enjoy and comment on their songs, dancing, musicality, etc.?
It's difficult to listen to every song (they have many nice ones) each time and tried to rank it yet having to go back and re-consider the ranking for the previous songs with some explanations.
In my opinion, it can be quite tedious and stressful to come up with a reasonable grade.

We do not expect everyone to like them, we have also seen some that just pretended to like them just to build their channel. Anyhow, thankyou for your reactions.
JK does start most BTS music videos. He is the main singer and at the center of most of the choreography. They call him the Golden Maknae (youngest) because he is good at everything. This song is my favorite, and it sealed my ARMY status. I think this is a masterpiece. Jimin played the solo dance, and he has contemporary dance background. This song is off their Map Of The Soul: 7(MOTS7) album, where they explore Carl Jung's Map of the Soul - Theory of Individuation which includes the EGO, Shadow, and Persona. So you see them use shadows in this one, which represents their undesirable traits that they want to repress. Suga said in an interview about MOTS7, "One message that penetrates the album as a whole is that you must face your inner shadows, but resist becoming submerged into its depths. You must face it and move on forward."
The Martha Graham Quote, "A dancer dies twice, once when they first stop dancing, and the first death is the more painful," explains it well, and Jimin is the perfect one to be highlighted in this video because of his talent for dance and BTS is known for their dance choreography, as well as their music. So I think it represents dance, but also their fear of losing the passion for what they are doing and being unable to perform or produce music. Also, their live performances of this are amazing, on another level. They have performances on Jimmy Fallon for BTS week, and on James Cordon. I like the Jimmy Fallon, and it has subtitles.

BTS has so many different styles that just shows how talented and diverse they are! When I was getting to know them I did start off with dynamite and to my surprise my journey was beyond my expectations! Yes Marty!!

BTS is a genre. There is no comparison to anyone. They usually write songs based on what is going on in their lives or going on in the world. Watching the mv is great but it u want the full effect watch the dance practice right after. MV AND DANCE PRACTICE. This is one of my favorites and if you know them at all u feel it.There are many introductory videos to help you get to know them like we do.The more u learn the more you want to know.
You are right Tommy that BTS is considered national treasure in South Korea in fact they will speak at the UN Gen Assembly next month in NY as the Presidential Envoy. Your reference to Usher and Travis Scott is coincidental bec both artists are BTS' favorites. Usher is Jimin's favorite.
It‘s always interesting to see the rankings of other people. Even if I‘m a metalhead myself my ranking would be so different from yours with ON and Black Swan much higher. Both are masterpieces in my opinion considering the instrumental, the lyrics, the message and the choreography. Maybe Black Swan is not a song for every day, because it is a darker song. I think it is hard to compare all the songs from BTS, because they all are a different genre and have total different vibes and messages. The songs are made for different feelings and situations.
I recommend the MVs Fake Love and Not Today and hope to see reactions to some introduction videos of BTS some day.

JK is their most stable singer when dancing. So at the age of 15 he was given the title of lead singer. He also is central to most of the acts. We say JK is good at everything and mostly he is! JK's solo, EUPHORIA LIVE IS INCREDIBLE! YOU MUS5 LEARN THEIR HISTORY OR YOUR COMMENTS ARE LACKING. WATCH A DOCUMENTARY!!
I understand that for those who don't know discography yet, it's easier or maybe unavoidable to make comparisons, but honestly I can't compare nowadays, BTS is simply BTS, similar to BTS. They have this musical identity that when you hear a song you know it's theirs, whether it's the voice, rap or beat, or simply the division of lines between the members. Explaining better; when I first heard Black Swan, the first thing that popped into my head was "this MV is like the daughter of Fake Love with Blood Sweat and Tears", the beat remind me of Lounder than bombs, or maybe Danger, Stigma, for the somber mood of the video and the lyrics. BTS is its own genre. They've worked with so many genres that nowadays you can't categorize them into one or that. That's how I think these days. And I'm not saying it's something that just happens to them, other great artists bring that feeling too. Michael Jackson for example, no one compares Michael Jackson with anyone else, Michael Jackson's music is itself a reference for comparisons because it is unique, it is an identity.
I think, you should've watched the live version of Black Swan from the James Corden. That was one of their best live performance, imo, and it really elevated the song.

Probably the closest to heavy metal that they've done. BTW, there are heavy metal versions of their songs on CZcams that are amazing covers. It'd be fun if you watched an original BTS song and then follow it with a heavy metal cover 😎 Oohhh and RM did a collab with Fallout Boy, remake of Champion 😯🤗

I think others already said, that this song is about them losing their passion for music and creating, not about losing fame. I think, regarding bts, what's important to remember, is that music is the thing that drives them, not fame or fortune. Yoongi talked about it in their documentary, that when he began, he wanted to be rich, famous, etc but later he realized that their art, their message, the chance to reach people with their music and perhaps change their lives for the better, is really what's important to them. If they lose their passion for music, then there's no point in continuing doing what they do, so it will basically be their first death.
Black swan, imo, is a masterpiece of a song, but it takes time to fall in love with it and appreciate the amazingness of it. Maybe after you watch, sometime in the future, the MMA performance and the orchestral version mv with the dance company, you'll bump it up a bit :)

This song is about how it would be for them if they lost their passion for music, singing and performing. It would be their "first death". Jungkook starts out most of their videos (has since 2013) but not all. It's because he is the main vocalist. He also does most of the backgrounds and adlibs. The main rapper is RM. The lead rapper is Suga. J-Hope is a rapper and sub vocalist. JK can rap really well also (as you will find in their really early videos/songs like "Danger"). The dance line up is J-Hope, Jimin, Jungkook and V. In the song "Butter", the part where V sings "Don't need no Usher, to remind me you got it bad" well the word bad in that line is actually sung by Jungkook. Jungkook also fills in for the others when they are unable to perform...even for RM, Suga and J-Hope. He can sing low like V and he can sing high like Jimin. He is the singer whose voice is the most stable while dancing. I think that Mike might have nailed this one because the song and video are linked in this case. The song was based on a well know quote from Martha Graham, mondern dancer and world-renowned choreographer that “a dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful”. The dance that Jimin does, is in the Martha Graham style and he is express his fear, notice you never see him sing (hear him but do not see him), so you would not get his message unless you see the video. They are not only expressing their own fears, but letting ARMY know that they have the same fears as other ARMY artist, a fear of the loss of their art. think about it how much musical artists are in fear right now due to Covid. They are lossing a large part of their art, the concert. So, you do need to think about the emotion that the song brings out in you.
Remember in Mic Drop, they basically state they are going to be listen to their fans from now on, not the haters. That ARMY and them walk together, so many of their song were devloped for the emotional connection to that theme and not radio air play. This was good example. Developed for at home, in the context of the album and video. As an example, when I might be feeling a bit down, it is Butter I play, but if I need a boost to keep fighting, it is On, when I think I might be alone in my fear, it is Black Swan.
But again a great job!

This is a song that was written during a time they thought about disbanding
.BTS only belongs to one genre, their own and there is no one to compare them to except themselves.
I think you might be confusing black swan with outro tear. Outro tear was written in a time when they were having difficulties bc of the worldwide fame they experienced and they considered disbanding, but then they decided to sign for 7 more years. Black swan was written as a way to express their fear of that day when they wouldn't feel the same passion and love for music like they do now. I don't remember them saying anything about disbandment.

I think the way they rate the song is based on 1st impression so that's alright, and I don't think they consider much of the entire video.. And they're metal heads like they said. I also like dynamite but it's a typical western sound so probably that's why they like it more given it's in English too.. But I don't know, being familiar with BTS's discography, I guess that makes it different.

It would be more pleasurable for us if we would see your reactions to the lyrics also - maybe I'm just used to the formula of reactor channels - but most reactors listen the song/react to the MV, and then go through the lyrics before camera, so we can enjoy their reactions freshly.. I know this is not a reaction channel.. But why not give also that (not a reaction channel, but your reaction to the lyrics) ? It would be interesting to see you brothers to converse about the lyrics of our loved brotherhood..

One of the issues coming up for BTS is that all Korean men have to serve in the military for, I believe, 21 months. I believe that Jin will be the first one who has to enroll, and then the others sequentially by age. There is some discussion at the governmental level about legislation to allow them to skip military service the way many athletes on national teams are able to do. It's a very controversial issue in Korea.

I love Black Swan so much it would be high 9s in my rankings. Whereas I would have Dynamite in the 7s.
Aha!! Jin ‘standing up’ to Big Hit? Lol. They don’t argue a lot. Their company is good to them and vice versa. Jin calls the man who created Big Hit, hyung (brother). It’s RM, the leader, who works as the business go-between for BTS and the company. I adore Black Swan for the story and the dancing as well as the music…so personally I rate it much higher than Butter and Dynamite. Love how you do your homework…yes BTS do deliver story arcs. For a snapshot of Map of the Soul 7 (MOTS7) that features On and Black Swan, how about you watch Persona, Shadow and Ego. MOTS7 is based on the works of philosopher Carl Jung who explored the concept of self. We all have our persona (or the face we show others), our shadows (our fears or the things we hide about ourselves) and our ego (which can be seen as an integration of all that makes us, us). These performances are all individual raps by RM, Suga and then jhope respectively, in very very different styles. Captions on and a pre-read for sure!! You could always do them together !?? I solved your problem. Rank them in two categories, Song and Video. I see what difficulties you're having, ranking each song, because you're trying to disregard the video. You can't do that with KPop. The song and video are irrevocably joined like Siamese twins.

Jk is BTS lead vocalist...
I keep trying to tell you guys that the ranking thing your doing will only get harder, lol. BTS has no genre so it is very hard to compare their videos. Also you guys are not quite getting them just yet. There songs are never aimed at their company or managers. They sing either about their haters, ARMY, their experiences, or about issues people struggle with. They love their company and the people that run it. And even though Jin is the oldest he doesn't enforce that with the group or company. RM is the leader and he takes on that role in all aspects. BTS has full artistic freedom and even own shares of the company. You all really do need to watch the guides about them. And most reactors have recorded themselves reacting to the guides and posted it so ARMY and people can watch as well. JK is a lead vocalist and is in the center a lot but there isn't one lead vocalist and then all backup vocalists. There are quite a few songs that JK does not start. This one for example started with Suga not JK, lol. They don't argue or fight about who does what or who gets to do what. That is another big appeal tp people. They love each other like brothers and they support each other in any roll they play, there is no jealousy. They all feel that with any one of them missing they are not or will not be BTS. The American music industry could learn so much from the Korean music industry. Thank you again for continuing to learn about BTS 💜💜💜

Please don’t ever compare them to any one/band! They are BTS…they are unique, original and their own genre! Their songs are full of messages and have a storyline that threads through all of their music. Please learn more about who they are personally and the history of their evolution through the years. You MUST understand the songs themselves. Black Swan is an artistic masterpiece; you just can’t compare their songs because they create what they want to…they do not adhere to any one genre of music!!! Your 7.8 ranking is actually insulting to them. As for Bang, he is a genius and treats them with great respect. Bang has been like no other music mogul and never did impose the traditional, strict rules of KPop.

I dont know you can rank and compare any of these songs together/to each other. They have nothing in common so i dont know about this.. how about just ranking them based on how you like the song/lyris/video and not based on everything else theyve released.
