Red Bull's genius 'triple DRS' F1 trick explained

  • Lewis Hamilton said he'd never seen a car as fast as the Red Bull RB19 after the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. And he wasn’t only talking about its all-round performance.
    For Hamilton was also amazed at the speed differential when Max Verstappen overtook him at the end of lap 11, breezing past on the run to the first corner. Yes, Verstappen had the DRS open and Hamilton’s was closed, but even so it was a big difference of as much as 34 kilometres per hour - as much as twice what might traditionally be expected.
    That’s led to questions about what clever trick Red Bull might be using to achieve this effect. In this video, we’ll explain just how big the Red Bull DRS advantage is and how it is achieving it.

    “I’ve never been a fan of being concerned of one team dominating because if they’ve done such a good job, they deserve it. I mean I wish it was us, and then I would get really angry people telling us that we’re walking over Formula 1. Unfortunately, this is a cars sport more than the drivers, we know that makes more of a difference. Red Bull has a very strong line-up and what we know is that if a car is really good, all the other drivers cannot do much to stay in the fight. It is the nature of Formula 1 and we’ve seen it in the past, it is nothing new.”

If we had fights in 2014-2021, it was because Vettel and Max were vastly better drivers than really overrated Merc ones and could beat them in far worse cars (and in Vettel's case, also clown team who did everything to lose on strategy). Reminder that Rosberg was the only driver to ever by obliterated by Webber, yes, that Webber who was destroyed by Vettel in all years in F1 together, even when Vettel was in Toro Rosso and Webber in Red Bull...

      @@KuK137 Explain why Ricciardo, an overrated driver who got kicked out of the sport this year, obliterated Vettel in 2014, and also beat Max in 2016-17. Leclerc obliterated Vettel in 2019-20 in the same "clown team".

    • @thatrustyone1943
      @thatrustyone1943 Před rokem +16

      @@NandoFIT-df8ly very easy actually. Vettel and Riciardo are drivers who can drive insanely well if a car is set up in a certain way. This is common, like we see with Hamilton. The "best of all time" was beaten by his new teammate, and this all had to do with Lewis not being able to adjust quickly to a new car. Ferrari had a difficult car when Vettel was having a tough time with it, Leclerc too but he adjusted faster. Daniel was great in RB, needed some time to get used to the slightly different Renault, but couldn't get used to the McLaren. It's because the car philosophy didn't suit his driving style. Verstappen destroyed his recent teammates regularly, mostly because the car was setup for his driving style, which not many others prefer. Not to discredit any driver that wins over their teammate, but the car has to suit the driver in order for the driver to perform to their fullest potential.

    • @launchsquid
      @launchsquid Před rokem +98

      It's not super common but it's also not that weird, there have been many times that the best F1 car of that year has that very quality.
      Ross Brawn talked about one of his old Ferrari's being so good they would deliberately run a downforce setting low enough to make sure they were quicker in a straight line than their rivals at the time, whilst carrying enough downforce that they remained the fastest in the slow corners.
      He said it was all possible simply because they had the best downforce/drag ratio at the time.
      Basically they didn't try to run their car at it's optimum setting, they just made sure they were fastest in the speed trap and fastest in the slowest corner and had a balance the drivers liked, with that the car was always too quick and the drivers were always comfortable pushing it.
      As a counterpoint, I've heard David Coulthard talk about his Adrian Newey designed McLaren's from 1998/1999 and he talked about how they weren't his favorite F1 cars despite them being some of the best he ever had in his career (relative to the field) because to get the best from them their setups required "too much understeer" and he just didn't like that balance in his car.
      If he dialed it out, he have up too much performance.
      If Redbull have so much performance in their car, they might just be doing what Ross said Ferrari did, focusing on giving Max and Checo a balance they like as long as they have the top speed trap and fastest slow corner speeds.

      For the paint they use, it doesn’t no. It’s a matter of weight. You could have paint which could have aero effect, but it would need to be very very bumpy, the golf ball dimple is a good idea of size for the bumps. What that does is ensure you have a turbulent boundary layer. In cases where you know flow will detach, this helps control when and where it detaches, which leads to reduced drag. However, in the case where you want nice, smooth, laminar, attached flow for as long as you can, bumpy paint would increase drag, and more importantly, mess up the airflow to other parts of the car, which is why they don’t do it

    I wonder how much of Alpha Tauri’s budget they spent developing this for the Red Bull. Funny how a company that owns two teams is seeing a massive improvement for their primary team and drastic decline in their secondary team as soon as the cost cap really started to kick in. In a sport that takes everything to win sacrificing your other team is most definitely on the table.

    Drag doesn’t scale linearly as you suggest in this video. It scales with the square of velocity. So the drag you have at 300kph is not just 3 times the drag at 100kph. It’s 9 times the drag.

      When Lewis was privileged in his life
      Even when had these dominant cars he had to fought against rosberg. What a privilege he had life is so easy to have a competitive teammate
