I had many conflicting thoughts on this one because I thought it had such promise, such a solid entry! But it's a little predictable and simple for a prequel, especially one almost 50 years later! Hoping that came across in the video, as I was still reflecting right out of the cinema.
For those who are seeing it, at least the trailers didn't spoil anything and made it seem like it would be terrifying or intense. Debating seeing it since I do like the first 2 OG films, 3rd was okay 🤷♂️Great post once again 🤘🏼👏🏼👏🏼
@@MrAndy12878❤though the same thing
On the matter of predictability and spoilers, could you tell us if Ave Satani gets used at any point in the film or not? That's the *only* spoiler that I want to know in advance because not using it would be a crime.
I always struggle with horror film prequels. Many times I already know what's coming and who dies and who doesn't. The ones I end up enjoying are the ones that answer questions I had or reveal a twist.
Have to say with something like an Omen prequel I don’t care if it’s pretty straightforward. The original wasn’t particularly twisty or anything, though the reveals were good. It’s fine for me if it just has good acting, characters, setting, and some lore. Oh, and an omen-ous score of course! 😈
The bit with the translucent spear is superb. 😂
Maybe it's an omen!😨
*I've been a fan of The Omen since I first saw it aged 13 in 1982. Ive loved it ever since. I've even met Harvey Stephens/Damien, who I had a few beers with, as well as meeting David Warner RIP on a few occasions. Both lovely people.*
Given my love for that movie, I was apprehensive about this prequel. However, I PARTIALLY loved it. As you said, great music, acting and cinematography. I loved the muted colours, as seen in so many 1970s movies. HOWEVER, I say partially loved, because they have actually sh@t on the lore set up in the original movie. Here are my points on that below...
1, Father Brennan in the 76 movie had defected from the group involved in the birth. In the 76 movie, he was marked with 666, as seen in his death autopsy photos, telling us he had been an Apostate of the Devil before wanting to be forgiven by God for his betrayal. In this movie he is clearly NOT an Apostate of the Devil, and he was NOT involved with the conspiracy. He learns of the plot from another priest at the start of the movie. He also says in the 76 movie that he was present at the birth of Damien. In this movie he's not!
2. In the 76 movie, we are not only told by Brennan that Damien's birth mother was a Jackal, we actually see the remains of that Jackal in a grave, next to a grave containing Robert Thorn's murdered child. The name on the Jackal's grave is MARIA Scianna. In the prequel the mother of Damien is not Maria, but MARGARET Scianna, and we're lead to understand that she was impregnated by a Jackal like Demon.
*All of these points, has this movie misaligned to the original. The Director claims that she's a big fan of the original movie. If that was true, then she would be as well versed with it as I am, and these story changes would never have happened. They've effectively sh@t on The Omen 1976*
I absolutely adored this one it was so beautiful, the cinematography, music, tone, set design and Nell Tiger Free was amazing. Seeing it in 35mm print was great. I think l went in expecting it to be a straight forward storyline (being a prequel and thinking it had to fit into the omen so l wasn't surprised it would be a basic storyline)
2024 seems to gaining some serious momentum with the frequency and quality of new Horror releases. I saw both Immaculate and Late Night with the Devil and loved them and I'm so looking forward to seeing this on Saturday😀
Hope you enjoy !
You know I really enjoyed Neil Tiger Free in this film because she was great in Servant. I love the story as well as it add a new element into the franchise. I love the effects they use too, especially in the 3rd act of the film.
I totally just vibed with this one, perhaps because I've been watching some giallo lately and man, this one NAILS the vibes of 70s Italy for me. So far this is my favourite straight horror film for 2024. Still a long way to go though!
Awesome! What's your fav giallo? Mine's either Deep Red (1975) or Tenebrae (1983).
@@thebeatles114 I dunno if suspiria counts technically but… pretty colours 😆 the one I was watching right before the first omen was The Spider Labyrinth. Madness!
@@woodsro Yeah, Suspiria counts! Yep pretty much anything from the 70's and 80's is a great movie, especially horror and thriller. The Spider Labyrinth... mmm... never heard of that one! I've got The Forbidden Photos of a Lady Above Suspicion on Arrow blu-ray to watch so I'm intrigued what that's gonna be like.
I am shocked at how good that was. She deserves all the awards.
I wasn't sure whether to see this in the cinema or wait but you've managed to convince me it's worth a trip. Hope you drove home safely and avoided trucks with loose panes of glass.
I have a theory that in the ending the daughter is Barbara who gave birth to Narareen in third movie's end. That is what's the end of Damien. With the 666 mark, the daughter can't be the opposite of Damien but the male son she bears with Damien's secretary Harvey can be.
So theory Damien's twin sister (Barbara) marries Harvey (Damien;s assistant) and their son is the Crist. And Barbara is like Mother Mary.
I wonder what that "glare" was that you kept wiping away...
... a prequel. I'm afraid that it was a prequel 😨
Lol xD I don't get it but that's funny@@a.houston946
Perhaps a nod to a the original film ;)
@@spookyastronauts I'm glad you didn't lose your head.
I liked the light "slash". It's like the one that appears in all my selfies.
😫 Noooo!!!
Got to go to the cinema this afternoon. Glad I did cause the manager told me it's being pulled Thursday due to low ticket sales. We were the only two people in the auditorium. Sad.
I can’t quite put my finger in it, but I just find her to be so incredibly engaging and likeable! Well I guess one aspect that I do enjoy is she does offer a very nuanced approach to viewing horror movies and while I love and sub many horror channels, she has such a delightful and unique approach when sharing her thoughts. I’ll definitely be checking the prequel out personally.
Nell Tiger Free was so so good in Servant so I’m really looking forward to this one. Thanks for another awesome review! And Take care!
Please watch Sister Death (the prequel to Veronica), if you haven't already. It is one of the best if not the best nun movie I've ever seen.
I wouldn’t say jump scares are a necessary part of horror but they are an accepted staple. So when a good director uses them properly, we shouldn’t have to couch them in reviews. Hopefully we’re trending back to legit story based jumped scares rather than the James Wan and Blumhouse predictable, see it coming a mile away with a loud music stab as if we need to be told to notice something-type jump scares.
I love the first two "Omens", especially the classic film by Richard Donner (and the Jerry Goldsmith's score). Servant fascinated me. I'm loking forward to seeing the movie. Thanks for your review.
70s drama horrors are the best!
70’s horror in the whole was done either adult mature cast for a mature audience and that’s why you get that focus!
We also saw Late Night with the Devil which was his favorite of the two…. I loved them both equally…. 5 Star Horror & must sees
Completely agree!! I loved both of them for different reasons :)
Can I just say your theatre looks so much fun? Random I know but I always love seeing your theatre 😂
2024 seems a great year for horror...........And I haven't seen any of them yet !! My circumstances mean I've got to wait for their stream dates 😢 I'm excited about this one too now . Thanks to you 😊😊
Saw it today - very impressive and creepy that coat scare got me - dark imagery and that end scene! Couple of great twists wonder if they will do another? Super cast and atmospheric ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks for recommending The Traitors! Currently on episode 6, season 1 of the AU version. I'm a fan of Survivor and it reminds me of that somewhat. Love it and love your channel!
My big problem with this movie is the way it completely breaks the lore/continuity of the original Omen.
SPOILERS AHEAD.
In The Omen Father Brenan comes to Thorn to warn him of Damien's true nature in an attempt to atone for his part in the birth of the antchrist. In The First Omen, Brenan spends the entire movie trying to thwart the birth of Damien. Thereby totally re-writing the character's arc.
In The Omen Damien is "born of a jackal" & Thorn & the reporter Jennings do indeed find the bones of that animal in the grave of Damien's "mother". So having him born of a human woman in The First Omen breaks another major plot point of The Omen.
The idea that this secret sect of the church wants to birth the antichrist to bring people back to God seems dumb to me.
If Damien's twin sister (an idea I don't love to start with), isn't inherently evil then is Damien?
I also thought the first 40 minutes or so was fairly boring.
On the plus side, I did think it was well-acted and shot, but the way it screws up the established plot of The Omen is a big thumbs-down for me.
For a second I thought this was a Monkey Man review cause of the poster.
lol, right beside Jeremy Jahns review, I thought the same thing xD
@@johnny1013johnnylmao same this video literally above his monkey man video
Thanks tomorrow!
@@spookyastronautshey babes I was wondering if you were gonna do a video over the thriller femme??
That was a fun start to your video. I just watched the original film again to prepare for this, and it sounds like it takes a lot of the same tone from that movie. Definitely going to catch it in theaters when I can.
Where in the theater do you usually sit? Way in the back? Towards the front? On the left or right? I'm always curious what people choose. I love sitting way up front.
In the back but in the middle directly underneath the projector makes me feel like the director
Usually at the most middle part of the hall, but had to compete for it
Usually towards the front in the middle. Not too far up front, but still towards the front
@@jahjohnson31i always sit in that spot when I go with my mom, who has her degree in film. It’s actually a very cool way to appreciate a good horror movie! Otherwise I sit in a middle row to the right. I feel like I “see” more somehow at that particular angle. No idea why though lol. Are you gonna check out the omen prequel? I think I will.
Towards the back but not all the way, right in the middle.
I agree almost completely with you! Outside of me just being an idiot, I very rarely predict or even think about how stories within movies are going to end. I really don’t spend much time trying to predict endings, as that’s not how I really watch movies, but this one focused so much on “unraveling the twist” that it kind of forced me to sit there and think about where it was going. Similar to you, not only was the “big reveal” predictable, but a lot of the events leading up to reveal seemed to be fairly obvious. I almost felt like the movie was shot in a way to make it obvious, so that’s why I was surprised when it spent so much time lingering on the mystery component of it.
However, that being said, I loved a lot about this movie. Nell Tiger Free’s performance was amazing, and the score was outstanding. I also think the movie was shot in such a way that it felt truly epic and horrific at times.
My only other criticisms would be that the movie felt like it was going to end several different times, I’m not entirely sure what they are trying to set up with the ending, and I felt that the movie was fairly derivative of a classic movie (I’m sure you know which one I am referencing).
I sound like I am complaining a lot about it, but I would probably give it around a 7/10 as well. Its worth seeing for the performances, the sound and some of truly horrific imagery. I can see why it was almost rated NC-17
I don’t think it’s complaints I think it’s valid discussion which is what’s so fun about movies! As long as it’s constructive don’t worry about negative comments. It shows passion!
.. spoilers..
im guessing its quite derivative if not a mixture of rosemary’s baby, exorcist and of course the omen, but really alot of rosemary😂
it was really predictable until the end scene.. maybe havent seen the sequels or cant remember anything about the two 666s mothers raising their daughter… would this be possibly unexplored territory for further movies?

yeah, rosemary’s baby is the one I was referencing. One scene in particular was extremely reminiscent
I had a horror weekend with my boyfriend in ATL… We saw Immaculate & it was fabulous… But the best part was the movie previews for all of the new NEON releases….ALL 4 horror previews were NEXT LEVEL!!! We going to go see all of them yo… these had us super excited for this horror year!!!!
Luv the new style of your vids🫀 feel like I’m back in the live
Good to see you the Omen back
I'm super excited for this one - I'm not a massive Omen fan but the trailer for this looked so cool so I'm glad you liked it!
Ive been calling this film a great prequel to an alternate Omen trilogy. They changed the jackal element (which the writers thought was necessary and by design) and changed up Father Brennan's storyline. I also thought the reason for this church bringing forth the Anchrist was weak :/.
It's a good movie and very well crafted but certain things didn't line up for it to get to the 1976 film IMO.
Thank you Spooky I was looking forward to this :)
Hey EM, I'm looking forward to seeing this and I wonder if the nod to the original involving a nanny standing on a ledge....did that send you over the edge?!
Also, you might not want to kneel down near any parked trucks containing sheets of glass. Just sayin'.....😆
I love when you do fun editing stuff
Stay away from large panes of glass on trucks.
Hey mate! Your hair looks great! Love the video, can’t wait to watch the omen, would you ever do a video putting them in chronological order?
Emma awesome review 😊
You know what's sort of spooky.
Out of the blue. This morning, I watched the original Omen. With Lee Remick and Gregory Peck. Which I love 👍👍
Now I see this. Ha..😮😂
Feels like an Omen 🤔
Tye glare at the beginning of the video. You're hunted now 😲
I just got home from seeing this and I love it! I can't think of anything I didn't like and I don't feel that it lacked anything... it has been a long time since I've enjoyed a film this much. I rec. seeing it in the cinema, it has such a poweful atmosphere and the score= wow!
I loved it. Watched it before rewatching The Omen and it did feel cohesive to me. The lead performance was incredible along with the rest of the cast. It had some of the best horror imagery and it is right up there with Immaculate along with Late Night with the Devil as the best horror movies so far. I'm curious what you predicted because I thought there was enough diversion to second guess a lot of what happened, especially when the graphic horror elements appeared.
Emma am looking forward to watch the new first Omen movie in theater
I have hope going to check this one out now 🙂
Right they had to tell a story for both new viewers and people who were fans of the original. Still it's really great all around. The acting is really impressive. I think the director whispered to the lead before that crash scene to freak them out about the other people on set and some had to walk off set during.
Got my tickets for this Sunday! I’m somewhat stoked.
I cannot wait! I love relious horror and we're spoiled this year!
Great review. Love your format. Gonna be a bit before I catch this. Heard good and bad from so many friends. Haha
Finally a movie I've been able to watch the same time as you, it has been a while since you've seen a movie that's out in my country.
It was surprisingly good for a prequel, the one thing I can't stop thinking about it, they just have the devil hanging out behind some curtains for years?? How did he get there?? Why did he made a "deal" with the church?? Why would he let the church control his kid?
I just didn't know controlling the devil was this easy
And Sonia Braga representing Brazil 👏🏻
Loved your foreshadowing image tribute to the original Omen , maybe stay away from churches with lightning rods for awhile . Great review , just enough praise to keep expectations in check . Can't wait to see it .
Or behind trucks 😱
I was going to see this on Tuesday, do you recommend watching the first one before hand? Another question is if it's super flashy?
Thank you! Keep up the great work
Glad its good, but just want to say its amazing to put together a complete, perfect review as u walk out, flawless!
Omg thank you so much! This means a lot to me.
You are just so creative :D:D:D
love the music it called (hustler)
I saw it last night and im also torn like you. I think it delivered as a prequel but there were some bizarre scenes and I think it went too long. If it had been edited a bit I think it would've slayed. Nell was an incredible actress ❤❤
Liked your little screen glare homage 👍
Am curious how this measures up to something like Immaculate given the similar premise and if they explain or ignore the whole jackal part of the antichrist's conception mentioned in the original
You face reaction said it all after the line appeared for a 2ND time. Did you spend $$26.00 for this 1?? I am still not sure. 1 week to go for highly anticipated Sting. Excellent Video and Job
What music is under the travelling to the cinema bit?
So you did a Live Stream and now this is your third video this week. Thanks for the content but always remember to get some rest
I've been looking forward to this movie ever since I watched the trailers. And what do you think those glitches on the screen in the video were? ARG on Emma's channel is coming!
I've always preferred the original over the exorcist which gets more love. Going to see this weekend but not expecting much
I’ve been starved off horror movies because for some reason my cinema picks and chooses what to bring but they brought this one. I was wondering why it was 15+, boy did I found out why
also how rad was that club scene and how FIT was Paolo
Since I saw Immaculate yesterday, I can't help but compare the two, with this one feeling warmer, more stylish and with a finale that's not as deliciously mean. I somewhat prefer the other's more subdued build up, but appreciate this one's attention to character.
That said, for a modern prequel (and one that feels like Suspiria meets The Omen), this exceeded expectations and delivered some great atmosphere, nasty visuals and a story that respects the source. 8/10 for me.
I absolutely loved it. Wow - what a punch in the face. Outstanding.
Just finished watching it
Didnt eattch the trailer going in since I was a big fan of the original Omen
So I was going to watch this regardless and I was shocked and how much I enjoyed it it was a really solid film
I got this confused with the film Cabrini, haha! Like I thought all the nun trailers this year were horror films!
I've just been to see it and was impressed! I thought it was going to be tame like the Exorcist Believer or feel like a cash grab for sequels like Halloween. I LOVE that it went for genuinely shocking/sacrilegious imagery and wasn't scared to go there.
Saying that, I wasn't as into it because I saw Immaculate a few weeks ago, and I feel that beat it to the punch in terms of some of the themes and ideas. Which is a shame because they were both good, this just didn't seem as fresh- but I'd be saying the opposite if Immaculate came out second.
Thanks for the review, Emma. At first, I was not too keen on seeing this film, thinking it would just be another studio cash grab. However, I trust your opinion, so I will give it a shot. Glad to hear that the film has that 70's setting and is not a prequel to the 2006 remake.
It would be cool if you did a ranking video for all the films in this series! Your essay videos are my favorites and I kind of miss them, but I can understand if they take a bit of time and effort. Also, I read that this film nearly got an NC-17 rating because of a non-sexual shot of a vulva and I find it ridiculous that censors freaked out over that and not gore.
The trailer was awesome. Like A24 but A25😂
I have a soft spot for 70s horror dramas so I'm kinda excited for this, even if it's not perfect. :)
I enjoyed it but didn't like the explanation behind it all. I thought there were shades of Rosemary's Baby in some scenes and some of the shocking scenes really delivered.
love your thoughts as always Emma but feel like predictable is such a harsh critique for a prequel bound by lore of its franchise. all things considered I literally was blown away - truly beautiful, harrowing and daring cinema and thought the performances were some of the best I've seen in horror in AGES. So many images and stylistic choices that will stay with me for a longgggg time
I mean there was a twist and i predicted it, the part that was a twist wasn’t connected to the rest of the franchise . Hope that makes sense. I loved the film! I also discuss the idea it had to match up, it’s an interesting concept releasing a prequel 47 years later. Appreciate the feedback ❤️
@@spookyastronauts yeah sorry I actually commented too early in the video hahaha. I completely agree that part of me wishes it was made without the shackles of the franchise but still thought it was so great. Script was a bit too expositional at times is my biggest critique
Looks like is one of those flicks gonna wait comes to one of my streaming servicers to watch since i have all of them...I ONLY liked the first & second THE OMEN back in 70s , i dont care about rest & modern ones , those 1 & 2 back then with legendry cast , just story was goes to bible gave me a chill beside the horror 2 , was GREAT , this Modern ones since 90s is all forgettable & peachy , CANT WAIT for Alien: Romulus & In A Violent Nature such as reminds me of Crystal kale & 80s Friday the 13th
I thought it was predictable too. I didn't like the pace though. It had potential, but feel short for me
I’m definitely6 going6 to see it. I really love6 the original film. It’s not scary to me so much as eerie (the 6Etruscan graveyard, 6the lore, the 6photos), and I’m not religious now but I was when it came out…so it has that going for it. The story is very straightforward but I find it rewatchable because of what you said - the atmosphere, music, and the characters.
Unfortunately, you’ll never get a cast like Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, and David Warner together with a director like Richard Donner again for a movie about the Antichrist. Not in today’s atmosphere. But I still want to see the new one, if just for the atmosphere and lore. And Nell Tiger Free, who seems perfectly cast. Cheers for the review…stay safe 😮
Do you think it would be helpful to do a rewatch of the original film before watching the prequel?
You don’t have to know anything but it makes the pay off better
I was a sophomore in H.S. in 1976, so I'm hoping the topical references will at least be a little nostalgic.
I'm happy to hear this was a good movie i was worried it would be awful. I can't wait to see it. Nice nod to The Omen with the light beam.
I haven’t seen the original..would you recommend going in not watching it given the film will be less predictable potentially??
Wow your missing out on literal horror classic one of the most legendary horror movies and legendary horror movie characters of all time which is Damien, it won’t hurt anything story wise if you watch it now as the new one is a prequel …I think you should watch it just to know who Damien is..,it’s a good movie and has set up a lot of stuff that new horror movies use today ….they did a 70s aesthetic trailer for the new one which is awesome as well
I think it’s better seeing the original as the pay off works much better
Haha. Saw what you did at the beginning.
The camera messing up is a great nod to the first movie
I've watched every horror film a going. I really enjoyed this felt it was a great prequel even though u knew where it was going.
I love the Omen movie so I’m really excited to go see it ☺️
This movie was definitely familiar but tried to be its own thing, which I can say makes it worth seeing besides what Emma mentioned in this review.
Going tonight
Man, the tension. I kept expecting you to get David Warnered at any moment. Just do us all a favor and stay away from window installers for awhile!
Would it be predictable if you hadn't just watched the original? Would I enjoy it better if I haven't watched it in a while?
Yes, because we have seen countless movies before. But the movie is still great in my opinion.
@@gamehunter1927 thank you
I think it’s better to have seen the original as the pay off works much better
The real question is which one you like more immaculate or this?
Looked like you had an Eclipse line across your screen.😮
Have you seen the first omen?
Do you think that it would be better (for someone who never watched the original) too watch the prequel first?
It doesn’t matter honestly it makes for a bigger pay off but it’s not necessarily
My con is OST didnt hit me maybe because mental exhausted what happening to the character.
the acting was great, but I was really disappointed in this one! I heard awesome things about it, but I thought it was so predictable, and I felt that there were really limited places where tension was really built, and when it was, it was just ruined by a jumpscare. I also thought it dragged so bad in the last third. some of the imagery was good, but in my theatre, some of it was literally laughed at. im glad you enjoyed it more than I did!
Hmm I might see this but not sure about the birthing scene
Spoilers
I don’t think the lore changed, Damien’s mother/father was the jackal/satan and Margaret was the incubator.
That’s how father Brennan sees it, since he doesn’t see Damien as human he can’t see him as having a human mother.
Ok. Tha. That's all I need to know. That visceral gore I can do without...
I'm embarrassed to say I've never seen the 1976 film (and I love Gregory Peck) Will probably skip this. I still haven't seen "Immaculate". Going to try and check it out in the next few days.
Don’t be embarrassed there’s always one classic we haven’t all seen!
