Square Enix selling off a ton of their Western IPs, like Tomb Raider so they could invest in NFT's was an incredibly bone headed move too.

They are chasing that sweet blackrock and vanguard funds.
They reap what they sow, no simpathy from me
I think the government won't allow it. They have a gun to their head imo. There must be a CIA agent embedded inside these companies ready to police the people on the project to ensure the DEI is enforced. (I mean the guy can force people off the building type stuff) Why else would companies like Sony move HQ to the US? Answer: Workplace bullying is easier when it's on your soil.
They can't resist that ESG money.

What gets me about Square is they keep saying "People don't like Turn Based classic JRPG's" then they put out Octopath Traveler and it sells gangbusters to their shock. Instead of altering their view they just blindly trudge on.
Turn based is dead and Square Enix needs to overhaul their marketing.
Star Ocean 2 got a fucking remake, a beautiful one that only knew just a week ago. That's the failure of marketing right there. They focus on big games and ignore small games.
Part of the cancelled games is Final Fantasy Tactics Remake. There are leaks of it. It looks like the animation of war of the lions became a game.

They were also surprised at Bravely Default's success, said the exact same thing but kept banking on their action-rpg hybrids with mixed results. But no, turn based rpg's are not dead Atlus with Persona games have demonstrated that people still like their turn based jrpg's and they didn't even need to reinvent the wheel, they just added a bunch of visual flair and style with waifus while still using pretty much the same system they've been using for years but with a few add-ons
Solution: Never have an Ethics Department. Japanese companies must make Japanese products. People can get the US stuff from the US easy. Since gaming became mainstream a lot of zombie consumer came into the space, hell many of these people dont even deny what they are (especially all those "positive" game channels). Like a MrboomstickXXL, who have said a zillion times he should hold till it released, cause it only incentivises a studio to release more broken games, install more predatory monetization, privacy violations, censorship, dumbing down of gameplay & combat mechanics etc etc. And than he turns right around by saying things like "I'll gonna pre-order the most expensive edition, I know its wrong but I cant help myself". The dude even said Gotham Knights was a worthy successor of the Arkham series. And there are many like him who buy every slob that is put in front of them.

I think most of the gamers that they're trying to appeal with nostalgia to are old enough to realize when it's memberberries. Alot of the people supporting games like that are tourists that don't pay any attention to what's going on in the industry and just buy the next game that is marketed to them with a recognizable name.
Video game studios have become too corporate. Gamer culture has always been not politically correct and we live in a time where all these studios are trying their best to virtue signal that they're politically correct.

Greed and Pride happen.
They're merged in name only. Enix games are still good (star ocean is tri Ace and they've always been kinda mid after PS1) because they're still Enix

These companies are going to learn the hard way that ESG/DEI will destroy them eventually. When you piss off and then insult your customers, we will close our wallets to you indefinitely!
DEI is only a problem because executives always think of the short term.
@@RicardoSantos-oz3uj That is kind of inherent issue of publicly traded companies. Shareholders don't know if they are going to own company stock 10 years from now so they want to squeeze money out of the companies NOW. The whole businessman mindset needs to change, because as things are the modern businessmen prefer short term high risk gambles to steady long term profits because if that gamble does work it creates new multibillionaires. Long term steady investments don't have as good earning potential, even if it has guaranteed smaller (but still of course big) earnings.
@@current9300 Agreed, though I'd note that such short term thinking isn't entirely irrational. Political upheaval has a way of making long term planning difficult. There are a lot of factors to this, and while I'd not make the same decisions they are, I can see some of why they might. The stock market is a game to many, disconnected from what companies are actually doing and long term ramifications. It's a problem that doesn't have a lot of solutions.

Should we warn Ken Akamastu and people/creators in Japan that terrible things (such as ESG, global standard, censorship, ect) are happening in Japan?
As for Square Enix, since the ps3 and xbox360 era, the company's sense of style has remained the same as it was in the 90's. At that time, when the company had no technical capabilities, President Wada fired a large number of employees to eliminate losses, at which point the decent employees went elsewhere.
The company has continued to deteriorate further as old men and women who don't work have become big shots in the company, internal factions have intensified, and the company has been swept away by the global left-wing trend since 2010.

People have started rejecting it, like Saints Row, Forsaken, Avengers, Suicide Squad, Alan Wake 2, etc. All those games have more problems then just being woke or influenced by dei people, but that is all a symptom of dei, it drains creativity and makes flawed, and lackluster design. I don't know the details of Baldurs Gate but with GTA 6, I have no idea if it's going to be woke, but unless they're are some major leaks then I expect people to buy it without question because of the previous games. When I got half way through KH3, my hype and anticipation for the game took a nose dive and realized I waited over a decade for it to come out as mid as it was. With Disney and SE being painfully foolish with production deadlines and budgets nowadays, how will KH4 fair?
The funny thing is that there is SO much wasted money from the budget on totally unnecessary things like hiring DEI companies (that's probably...no joke, like 1/6th of the whole budget). Then there are people making way more money than they should in other similar unnecessary internal positions. A lot of problems with Square Enix! Final Fantasy used to be the brand name to buy a SNES to Playstation. The Final Fantasy brand no longer has that appeal to want you to buy a PS5. Not to mention fracturing the fan base with only releasing certain titles to different platforms. So looks like the ones the Squaresoft put out in 2000 in the US were:
January - SaGa Frontier 2
February - Front Mission 3
May - Vagrant Story
June - Legend of Mana
July - Threads of Fate
August - Chrono Cross
September - Parasite Eve 2
November - Final Fantasy 9
Enix also had 4 releases which isn't a lot when compared to Squaresoft, but considering they only released 8 rpgs in the US between 1995-2003, that was a good year for Enix. If you're curious it was Dragon Quest Monsters 1, Valkyrie Profile, Dragon Quest 1 & 2, & Torneko the Last Hope. It's funny that it was in-between probably Enix's biggest games of that era, Star Ocean 2 in 1999, & Dragon Quest 3 and 7 in 2001.
FRONT MISSION 3! awwww yeah!
And Paramount jusr fired their CEO.
After watching this video, I'm going to go watch a summons video of all the monsters from final fantasy 7
The just cause series used to be right up there with fallout for me. I wish Square would get it together
They fail because they dont listen to fans, omg i wonder why👀
They don't have to listen just to fans, but they should be paying a lot more attention to the gaming sphere as a whole and see what's making some games crash and burn.
Hopefully next step, funding for Ethics Department will be cut to pivot to profitability.
Wait, isn’t ethics meant to prevent things from being unethical (even though square likely didn’t know this)
I am convinced Yoshi P is one of the few captains still keep this ship afloat. Despite many of the higher up Square Enix crew that keep drilling holes.
Forspoken looked visually appealing, but from my understanding the MC was a complete unlikeable brat who never grew out of her brattiness. Good job with that "representation", Squeenix!
To be fair though, FF7 and FF8 had unlikeable brats as main characters too. You had to play half-way through the games to figure out their deep stories and find out that they were just awkward people.
@@linusgustafsson2629 Probably why I didn't like 7....🤣I have my share of beloved JRPGs, but that is not one of them.
Were they better in the remake?
Well, I remember my brother attempting to get a Playstation (5) during the pandemic. He got scammed twice [fraudulent resellers.] The console was very hard for him to get. If it was hard for him to get, a guy in his mid 40s, then it was probably hard for a lot of other people.
So, add scarcity with the growing pain at the pump and grocery stores. Entertainment is something that is easy to remove from your budget.
Why are independent studios doing better? Why is a CZcamsr able to earn more than CNN? - Less overhead.
Also factor in all the additional narrative tropes that are being pushed right now in AAA titles. It isn't a shocker to see them struggling. Their huberious has lead them to bloat.
I remember not even all that long ago (like two decades) where the notion of a $50 million game was once considered outrageous for production values. Now we're seeing double or triple of that amount in the AAA industry as a normalized standard. I wish quality was still valued in the industry over needless bloat that wastes your money and hardware memory.
The old crew did release a Final Fantasy, it's called Lost Oddessy. The game failed because it was an Xbox 360 exclusive, and it was at the height of the jrpg hate in 2009.
I still think this was the true FF13. It still holds up even today.
People had a Hate-Boner for JRPGs in the late 2000s?
@@oriongear2499 the journos did anyway
I think Stellar Blade is heavily underperforming as a PS5 exclusive as well. PC would probably have sold a couple more million copies, which they had to ignore due to Sony forcing exclusivity in an attempt to sell consoles.
Ah I remember the days where 2D fighters were considered old and crap by the mags, 3D! 3D and polygons were everything now!
Then Street Fighter 4 came out and suddenly, oh it's amazing to go back to this, real classic stuff, 2D fighters are great! etc.
Heh.
they've lost their way, who knows if they can truly recover
Like a mouse trying to find its way out of a Termite Mound... after being soaked in sap, and having one clinging onto them by their jaws.
They can if they get rid of the woke. And focus on being a Japanese company.
The fall of Square Enix probably started when:
1.) When Squaresoft and Enix merged (hence, became Square Enix).
2.) Took DEI money and got Sweet Baby'd.
Will Square Enix gonna pull another "Final Fantasy" 2.0 miracle? It's now or never.
My best childhood memory from Squaresoft is Chrono Trigger (GOAT classic JRPG) and when I replayed it when I was a bit older, I prefer using the save point at Chrono's bedroom with Chrono and 2 other female members in the party line-up.
Front mission 3 was the sht. I put over 200 hours into that game.
Hell yeah, that's one of my all time favorites. The two different storylines blew my mind. ROFUPx6 and one shotting every enemy 🤣
They going exclusive with Final Fantasy which is their most known Ip, with Sony was also a big mistake.
FF16 had a lot of hype behind it but they decided to release it only for a console with only ten users, and they had the audacity to be surprised when that game did mid sales.
And after seeing that they still decided to keep Rebirth exclusive, yes I know that is a temporary one but with how many financial flops they been having they don't have the luxury to _gatekeep_ their own games.
For real, how FF16 and Rebirth were not simultaneously released on PC is beyond me, specially since FF14 which is they highest grossing game is a multiplaform title.
Yeah the PS5 exclusive for FF7 Rebirth was a big mistake. Especially since there is a good chunk of players that still don't have a PS5. (either from the shortages or the price cost). Though I think the exclusive thing is more of a Sony thing than a Square Enix thing. Sony is very stubborn with stuff like that. (I believe the Final Fantasy franchise is locked in with Sony?) Though even with that limitation, it did sell rather well, just not the super numbers Remake did since that was PS4. I'm thinking when Rebirth releases on PC next year, they're going to see a spike in sales.
On a side note, it is a real shame that Rebirth can't get out there like it should. I haven't had that much fun playing a game in a very long time.
@@hk_802 FF is not _locked_ with Sony, the mainline games used to be because with the Ps2 Sony used to had a pseudo-monopoly in the gaming market, but this isn't 2006 anymore and since FF13 they went multiplatform.
Both FF16 and Rebirth are exclusives because sony offered money to lock them in which clearly wasn't worth it since Square are complaining about sales to the point that a few months ago they announced 16 would have a PC release when initially they said it wouldn't have one and Rebirth's is supposed to come out in June instead of a year after like Remake.
Going Sony exclusive with those games was downright moronic and to add even more cognitive dissonace they ported FF14 to the Xbox consoles, but not the other two.
And they wonder why they are in red numbers.
@@hk_802 Ya Sony has a funding deal with SE so they're likely keeping it exclusive, even if just timed, due to that reason.
Unfortunately that means the 7R series got fucked as the game was split into 3 and the only Sony console with solid numbers that has a chance of getting them the profits they want (don't think they NEED more than what Rebirth got, it probably made even in the end and profited a bit but just not as much as SE wants) was the PS4 and they took too long to release part 1 on there (they should've aimed for basically the year after XV came out imo and started the project much sooner) and they needed this part out around 2020 and part 3 out around now/last year all on PS4 (with a PS5 upgrade too I guess) to really be able to do well on Sony only (even if for a limited time).
At the rate their going though Part 3's gonna be a PS6 only game and the entire project split between 3 different consoles...granted part 3 probably will sell better than part 2, maybe even part 1 on day 1 only due to the simple fact that many potential players/fans of FF7 may have decided to just wait until all 3 parts release (well I think more than part 2 is guaranteed for this reason alone...as for compared to part 1 though I may wind up being wrong as all the changes made to FF7R project may turn off OG7 fans that didn't guy the Remake games released so far...such as the whisper aspect and combat changes and other story changes). And assuming we don't get hit with a Covid 2.0, supply chain crisis of some sort, or massive scalper BS again and the price isn't too BS PS6 may have a better launch...the only other factor I guess would be the price of part 3 ($70 is already a turn off for me and I'd likely not buy the game myself until it goes on sale at that or higher price unless I was to buy an all in one package at about $120-$150 max on PS6/Steam but I can see this industry pushing it at $80 or more by then tbh as they're already in talks of $80 games (which if they push it higher I just won't buy until sales drops or sales at about $40 or less for all games...I'm not spending more than $60 on a standard none Collector's edition of a game plain and simple especially as they'll likely still shove hundreds of bucks worth of dlc on top of that and likely give less than they do now let alone 10 to 20 years ago on the PS2/PS3 eras and if I'm not buying day 1 than I'm not even spending $60, I'd be waiting for a sale at that point as $60 is only for when I get the game on launch day/week/month at most cause i want to play it immediately)).
I have played both 16 and Rebirth and imo both games are good however they're my bro's copies and PS5, not my own as I'm not buying a PS5 now due to the fact there's not enough games I WANT on it to warrant a ~$600 purchase when cash is as tight as it is...I'd be better off buying a new PC (which I also need as this one's nearly 10 years old anyway, granted cash is still too tight for such a purchase) and buying the games there instead...and that's if I ever buy a PS5/future Sony console at all as the company has been turning me off with all their political/censorship BS so I don't really even want to continue buying their shit, the only real reason why would be to buy the game physically and that's it plain and simple (and if they ever make a digital only console then yeah there'd be no reason for me to buy a PS console ever again tbh)...and as for PS5 it looks less and less likely mainly cause I feel like by the time I get the cash and maybe they put enough games exclusively on the system that I want (so far all that I want has had PS4 releases and I own a PS4 anyways as I got it before Sony started this nonsense so no reason not to continue buying there or they've released on Switch (which I may buy there over Sony as long as there's no huge performance differences or PC (which while I don't have one that can run them well now it's an option for the future)).
Well its not like they didn't engineer their own downfall like all the other studios catering to the mythical modern audience
Square said the reason there were no towns in FFXIII was they were "too hard" to make at that level of graphics.
FF games were always at the forefront of graphics but they still used to have a great story.
FF Tactics, Vagrant Story, bring Matsuno back. Read my Avatar. Bring back Front Mission the way it was. Bring back drama the way only you could deliver.
At least FM5 managed to resolve the plots from the 1 to 4.
I saw Front Mission 2 Remake is on Steam.
I mostly just thought "Could be fun, but I bet the translation is horrible and the game art censored".
SE spread themselves too thin with too many simultaneous productions that quality control became nearly impossible. They also have the ESG blight taking up resources and driving down everyone’s productivity.
I've been preferring to play card games over video games lately so my wallet has been funding Bushiroad. 😂
Square signs exclusive deal with Sony, their game underperforms and they sign another exclusive deal with Sony.
Pattern recognition, Kneon lol
Nail on the head. The absurdly inflated price of these games is because the overwhelming majority of the “staff” are 100% unnecessary. THIS is the main reason I’m so pissed about the price increases to games. The games themselves being outright trash is a close second.
Shorter, smaller scale games are the way to go-especially for RPGs. Give us a throwback 40-hour Final Fantasy developed for a third the cost. Charge $60. Fans would eat it up.
The thing is. Square Enix is a tarnished brand now. So... Their IP would be getting less and less traction
They did, it was called Bravely Default 2 and nobody talks about it
go woke,
go broke.
undermine your customers, feel the loss of cash
But I thought "diverse and inculsive content sells!"
They did some bizarre choices. Remember every New Year Letter...how the CEO kept hyping up NFTs even though it was a fading fad
The moment they saw these activist jump from studio to studio without even supporting those woke games. They should have give them boot right away, but since we are in clown world. They rather die on that hill, because ESG.
I'll be honest, if they end up disappearing. I won't be sad. They had their run, and it's time to pass the torch. Hopefully to someone who ignore this tiny mob of deranged individuals, and only caters to the people who buy their games.
Like a movie, sometimes throwing a ton of money into something doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed to be a success
RESPECT! Kneon knows his 90's JRPG lore! I was there too. It was a glorious time.
Square-Enix has published different titles in recent years that aren't Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, or even Dragon Quest; it's just that they don't do a good job marketing them.
And a new mana series game coming this year.
@@Raximus3000 Exactly!
I think Square is very aware of the problems now. They made a press release and state they intend to put a bigger focus on quality going forward.
The new Visions of Mana game might be their comeback.
We'll wait and see if that's the case. Otherwise, this is on them if they can't dig themselves out of this one.
How much of Forspoken's $100M budget went to a DEI 'consulting' firm like Sweet Baby Inc? 😉
And then how much did it cost to rewrite the game to make them happy?
Besides the exclusivity deal, I'd bet alot of potential buyers were scared off by the acts of censorship & then the nexusmods corruption only amplified that outrage ( and like you said brand damage from other games like Forspoken ). Part 2 of FF7R has sold about half as many copies as part 1 did in the same amount of time, it really seems like people's interest has fallen off despite the relatively good reception of the first.
How to tell me you're not paying attention to Square while saying you're paying attention to Square.
"FFXV was a FFXIII spinoff!"
"FFVII Remake/birth is just a remake of FFVII!"
"There hasn't been a FF sequel in forever!"
My guy, c'mon.
I come to you for integrity.
The CEO that has been making questionable decisions has stepped down. We'll see how the company does moving forward.
good music, story and game play will always beat Graphics hands down everytime for me.
I for the life of me don't understand why square doesn't make games with built-in audiences that people are begging them to make. Some examples are xenogears vagrant saga final fantasy 11 HD or release it on consoles again Chrono trigger or the third Chrono break parasite Eve just to name a few that fans have been begging for 20 years for them to make. But instead they'll put out for spoken and lose 100 million... I just don't understand it
People want 11 HD? Well, I complained for a decade that all I wanted was fun pets in the game, and they couldn't even manage to remove the glaring faults with the avatars. Doubt they can even make the game HD with that incompetence.
You don't want them to make Chrono Trigger. It will be horrible. It will be yet another franchise whose sequel makes you furious. If you thought Chrono Cross was bad, Chrono sequel is going to make you timetravel.
I remember the days SquareSOFT. When they became Square-Enix it was all downhill.
they still refuse to even re-release the old Taito console games. Given their rarity, you'd think you'd want to cash-in on the demand. Heck they could re-release old Squaresoft and Enix games in OG form and make easy profit. Konami changes with the times, they still go do far more expensive remakes instead.
If only Square Enix to have Taito to make a new arcade compilation for modern consoles and PC. The classic arcade games I want to add on said compilation are Chase H.Q., Special Criminal Investigation and Super Chase. Anyone else agree?
Cater to the "modern audience", don't be surprised when you're stuck in the past.
but but but Larry Fink is the modern audience!!! The boomer running banksster, wokkin for the globalists in charge, is the entire target audience. They make media for him, they ruin your life experiences for him as well....like being forced to use reusable bags and crappy cardboard straws, all done for Larry.
