  • The comic book industry is too male and too straight, and it's up to publishers to gatekeep the men out... or something. This according to some ranty manifesto from CBR that's straight out of 2016. You know, Marvel Comics tried that and it almost DESTROYED them...

      So is the traqditional publishing industry, and also they have a new thing as of last year where most books seem to have a requirment that one of the main characters be handicapped to even get on store shelves. That's what bothers me most about all of this. There is no reason why everything has to appeal to everyone. None. Diversity is not inherently good or inherently bad. It's a neutral state, just as homogeneity is. It's what is done with those states that matters. I grew up in a conservative, religious, homogeneous area. And yet, I learned about other cultures and peoples and when I went to college, I chose to specialize in areas far outside my growing up experience.
      If people like something, they will enjoy it for what it is. If it's not what they want, they should move on to something they do enjoy instead of insisting that the thing they don't like change to suit them. That's not how it should work.

      I’m gonna have to disagree with you on the novel you named; from what I understand, the MC acts without any moral compunctions in pursuing her “love interest”, and the plot separate from the romance is not really all there, there’s no world building to justify a revolution in the story.
      With the MC, she pretty much aggressively pursues the villainess in a method that someone described as “until she says yes”, and her methods for getting close can be described as stalkerish, since she blackmails her way into getting close to the Villainess, despite the latter’s *objections* .
      I know some would argue that it’s supposed to be “cute”, but if you apply something to real life, and it doesn't come off as cute, then it’s actually not, it’s better suited to slapstick and comedy.

      @Tyler_W Před 24 dny +20

      That's exactly what happened. DC kinda started it when they'd do the occasional "representation" bit for no other reason than clout. Batwoman and blackwater Wally West come immediately to mind, but it was Marvel who really started getting the ball rolling by bringing activists and bad fanfic writers into the industry. Around 2014/2015-ish,they wanted to bring in new audiences, so they tapped YA novel/slice of life writers amd writers and artists from places like Tumblr. They basically used some people's social circle on Tumblr and Twitter as the basis for their hiring pool. Whisper networks started forming because the Tumblr crowd was always toxic, and they pressured the right people to hire more and more of their buddies until they just took over the industry and either pressured the veterans into exile or submission. That's the best I understand what happened anyway. Half or these people ruining western comics are literally just stereotypically bad fanfic writers whose idea of a good story is to turn everything into self insert slice of life stories that doubly serve as ideological propaganda literature.

    • @Tyler_W
      @Tyler_W Před 24 dny +5

      Can you even say they like these comics/characters? I'd say a lot of them don't. If they did, they'd try to write things like the stories they liked before. It's about clout. They're either not skilled enough to create something of their own or don't want to go to the effort of building up cred with quality organically kver tume, so they hijack established properties for their popularity and name recognition because they think that they themselves will become popular by proxy if they can just write whatever they story they want with these popular and recognizable characters. They're basically trying to steal popularity by osmosis.. it's kinda like groupies who leech off of famous people and try to handle them under the often mistaken belief that riding their coat tails is the key to fame and success instead of making their own. They just suck so badly at what they're doing that they're only destroying the popularity of the characters they're corrupting by turning them into something they're not.
      The more ideological types who have infiltrated are similar in the sense they do the same clout chasing thing, only for slightly different, more abstract and supposedly high minded reasons, although there is overlap. Phil Labante has been saying this on the Timcast IRL podcast a lot lately, and it's so true because it's integral to understanding these activist types. "The issue is never the issue. The issue is always the revolution." They want to write established characters because they want to get the biggest platform/microphone possible to disseminate their propaganda message. Think of the brand recognition of established popular brands that these people want to conquer and stick their flag in like won territory in a battle. The bigger the brand they co-opt, the bigger the ideologucal victory for their team. Changing established characters into the image of whatever they want them to be is a display of dominance. "I have yoiur favorite toys now. I can do elwhatever I want with them now, and there's nothing you can do to stop me." Once they've adequately destroyed the brand they seized, making it no longer a useful platform for their agenda, they'll move on to the next most popular cultural thing to seize it and repeat the process all over again. They're basically cultural locusts or parasitic worms that infect their insect host, use them to acheive their own ends, and then move on to the next host to continue the cycle once the previous host has been devoured from within and/or destroyed.

I love many superhero movies, but this is a direct consequence of their former popularity and cultural dominance over the last 20 or so years. It colors their economic policies, their social ideas, and their political agendas. It also corrupts any religious ideas they might have swimming about in the rainbow-colored welter of unexamined impressions that passes for their opinions (for example, redefining "Father" as "Sugar Daddy" and then rejecting God when He doesn't deliver them from having to pay their bills).

They didn't have anyone to challenge them or correct their behavior, and they just...coasted on down the slope of declining sales. It's the worst thing about it, honestly: that these talentless hacks never even TRIED, or even had the inkling to try.
      I used to see fledgeling creators who really weren't all that good spread their wings and become greats. They've broken the industry at its very core, and then wonder why they don't get more work. The flywheel has halted, and there's no way to restart it. You'd have to build a new one from the ground up.

I'm not buying any comic where they advocate for communism &/or turn a formerly patriotic hero into a german from wwII. I am not buying any comics where the artist draws bean mouth and couldn't draw an abdominal let alone an eye.

    This is hilarious after seeing so many creators get high profile comic runs purely for them not being either white, male, and/or straight for the past few years and backfiring horribly because they forgot to also look for talent and passion. Seriously check either the comic "news" sites or walk into a store. Now so much actual good books and characters have been tainted because of this crap.
    I use to get annoyed about superheroes being a "boys" thing but after awhile you learn it's statistics rather than sexism, because yeah guys tend to gravitate to superheroes while some women do like them there are more likely to gravitate to slice of life or Indies/manga. Trying to make so many comics more "female and LGBT friendly" alienated even the female and LGBT audiences they had already for people who treat as a form of activism or something to tweet about.

  • @ShockerTopper
    @ShockerTopper Před 24 dny +4

    The world may be close to even with the gender split but the market for comics isn’t that way and over representing people definitely is not the solution. It won’t bring this huge group of fans to the product. Also by over representing the 13% they won’t get all of that group to read their comics and they definitely will lose more fans than they’d ever gain. I’m so tired of this over compensation because of the past. They can’t naturally increase the representation to ACCURATE levels, it must be overly represented and falsely portray the population.

    This is what happens when you remove talented writers/artists (Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis, and other stars left). Now they're gone and you have these people that shouldn't even be writing comic books in the first place. They sacrifice plot and replace it with a political tone, or downgrade the main character of the book to try and prop up a character nobody cares for.
    I can't grasp why just about all fans can see this but the corporate big wigs can't. Look at the Energon-Verse. Its a total masterpiece and the only books I read on a regular basis. Talented team, they understand the characters and universe, and old/new story elements are mixed perfectly! People want to read a good story, not the crap I described above thats being produced from DC

    I used to own a Comic Book Store, for 24 years! It was SJW PC 'WOKE' Gay Garbage that put me out of business. And it wasn't the start of it. No one, especially me, had a problem with Obsidian, Batwoman, Northstar, Wiccan, and Hulkling being gay. My customers DID have a problem with Alan Scott, Tim Drake, Jon Kent, Wolverine, Iceman, Colossus, and Hercules being turned gay. Alan Scott especially ticked people off because his popular daughter Jade was erased by DC! My customers immediately dropped every Marvel and DC Comic! They went 'WOKE', but I was the one who went broke! In fact, every Comic Book Store in my area went out of business! You now have to drive 150 miles in any direction to buy a Comic Book now.
