- Paute is just 45 minutes from Cuenca Ecuador and a popular weekend spot for locals to eat Ecuadorian food and go to the river with family and friends.
It's home to traditional Ecuadorian food you won't find in many other places like yaguana, tortillas, some of the best rotisserie chicken, mapanagua, mistela and coffee grown in Paute. It's also home of the world's largest spoon.
I always stay at the CASA CUENCANA. It's affordable, Ecuadorian owned and so clean and comfortable.

Hi I'm Ayngelina and my full time job is my site BaconisMagic.ca it's all about the best food around the world and how to make it at home.
In 2010 I left a job in advertising, 5 year relationship and sold all my possessions to travel the world. In the last ten years I've had some crazy experiences and even owned a restaurant in Toronto at one time. And prior to 2020 I had been based in Cuba.
When the world shut down I returned to Canada and decided to teach myself video. I wanted to share more than just words and photos but to show people the adventures I have learning about food around the world.
I'm not married. I have no kids. But I do have a lot of local friends who help me discover the best local tips.

Hey great video! Really like your sense of being so comfortable in front of the camera and your excitement for food!
Thanks so much Steve. My passion is the culture of food and I’m thrilled you enjoyed it.
Buena comida hermoso 💚 😍 hermoso Paute Dios nos siga bendiciendo nuestro querido Ecuador ♥️ ❤️ saludos bonita
Gracias Walter!
It’s beautiful video. Thank you very much for you visited Ecuador! Welcome to our country all tourist!!!
Thank you so much!
Thanks I live here and LOVE this village!
It’s such a special place
Such a beautiful area! Love the drone shots! I hope to include east of cuenca exploring more of Ecuador. These lovely towns nestled in jaw-dropping scenery, and the roads. I really want to ride the roads.
Yeah I live all these small spots. Sigsig is gorgeous and most expats who live in Cuenca have never seen it.
@@ayngelina
I could spend months riding motorcycle around Ecuador from town to town diggin' on the amazing roads, paved and dirt!
Cuenca could make a nice "base" but I'd be out riding the back county most of the time.
As my wife and I prepare for our Journey to Ecuador, your content continues to be of great value! Thank you.
Oh that makes me so happy, where are you going?
@@ayngelina ,
We will be moving to Cuenca in September of this year. We took an exploratory trip and fell in love with it. We have watched all of your detailed videos on it. The vibe is right up our alley, and we lived the food and people.
Oh you know I love Cuenca and it’s also such a great base to visit other places. There is a direct bus to Olon any time you feel like the beach.
That sounds great! Thanks again for all your informative content.
happy to help! In my video descriptions I also include Andres' whatsapp number as he's a national guide based in Cuenca. Everything I know about Ecuador is really because of him. A lot of new expats hire him for a day tour for an orientation of the city so they know where to shop, best neighbourhoods, how to do things etc.
Had a delicious lunch at Corbel on Tuesday.
So good! What did you have?
Naranjilla is my favorite!!
Me too!
Organizing exploratory trip.to Loja and Vilcabamba in September
Two very different places, it will be interesting to see what you think of them.
No way. I am from the Annapolis Valley as well. Want to travel to Ecuador badly.
Too funny! Ecuador is amazing. But we have better apples 😊
Ooooh, boy, those tortilla's (all types, savory or sweet) are on my list! Oh, who am I kidding, I'd scarf down all of the food on this episode! 😋
Except for the too-soft apples, lol.
If you haven't seen my Latacunga video yet they also have tortillas made with machicha, which is unique to the area. Also the Amazon has tortillas de yuca but I haven't found it yet #lifegoals
And that apple, was as gross as it looked. There's a reason why they cook it.
@@ayngelina I'll definitely go back and watch that Latacunga video!
@@bobogigio9072 you'll love it they sweet and spongy like pancakes.
Loved this video. Thank you.
First time commenter ! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave one. It really means a lot to me. 💜
Great video!
Thanks! So glad you enjoyed it! Coming up soon is a fine dining video in Cuenca with amazing veggie options.
Yo soy de Paute, buen video aunque hay mas lugares para visitar, gracias por compartir😊🤝
Dime los lugares que debo visitar la proxima vez! Me gustaria regresar 😀

You're welcome!
Excelent I love your videos
Thank you so much Lenin 💜
The moment I heard the crunch when you bit into that Flor de Mayo Apple 🍎
I knew it would be great!
But hey when I’m in
S. America, it’s Mangos, Maracuya Y Guanabana!
I'm with you! I grew up in an apple valley and I do love them. But I don't miss them at all.
@@ayngelina I’ll skip that soft one!
Sacsuma is a plum 😋
Oh I was hearing it incorrectly. I thought they said satsuma which is a mandarin and that confused me
I wanna visit there😄
The villages outside Cuenca (Gualaceo, Sigsig, Chordeleg, Paute) are my favourite.
Mi paute querido
Me encanta está pueblo.
@@ayngelina This coming February is Carnaval and Paute has the best Carnaval, so many things to do and a lot of parties I recommend go there, I live in NY but always go Paute for Carnaval and this February will not be the excepción !! 🥳🥳
I’ll be in Indonesia this year so I’ll miss it 😭
Hola de Nuevo , I love the choclo ones , because it’s more tender or fresh corn 🌽 the other ones are a little 😋
Have you tried tortillas de machica?
@@ayngelina nop , but I had a bed experience with machica, I had it plain with banana 🍌 witch is dry and I chocked Boy !! I almost die Never again machica for me 🤣
You must try it as a tortilla. It's so light and fluffy. I showed it in my Latacunga video.
@@ayngelina I will , I’m sure is good
Nice video girl
Thanks so much Henry
Great video! I love Ecuador (at least as I have seen on videos)! I can't wait to visit this year! I have to confess that the serving with hands touching the food is quite foreign to me. Is hand washing a common expectation in these type of markets? Just trying to put my germaphobia to rest lol.
Some people in the market use gloves if that's what you prefer. Although to be honest in many restaurants in North America people use gloves but then they still touch tons of non food items. I actually prefer that people not wear gloves and instead wash their hands. Hand washing is definitely expected. Even when you go to the washroom, you have to pay 25 cents but the attendant always has soap and paper towel and the markets that have attendants are really clean.
@@ayngelina Thanks! Yes, I often see people in Canada using gloves to touch food, then grubby money, and back to food...definitely no better than using dirty hands lol. Thanks for putting my germ worry to rest. I have no problem with clean hands serving food :) Thanks for your great videos, they just get better and better.
Thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate that.
👍
Thanks Nellie !
Yay! Apples from Ecuador. What a gem of a little town! Definitely putting on our list for days trips from Cuenca. I'm also intrigued by the coffee you tried...I often think coffee is too bitter.
I was so surprised it was so smooth. They are really trying to help local producers and it’s so good
Yes or not angelyna, that Ecuador has medium towns and cities to live quietly??? It gives me the feeling that they are beautiful villages for those who like to live quietly. They are clean, there is food of all kinds and cheap, I do not think there are other cities in South America with the attractions that the towns have in Ecuador, there must be, perhaps in Argentina or Chile. I like the Ecuadorian Sierra. Perhaps a point against is the altitude but over time the body gets used to it
Paute is significantly lower, and definitely warmer. I think most people could adjust to the altitude and you know it's good for your lungs! I love all the smaller towns most people don't know about, they are all so interesting and have great food.
Muy lindo luggar quiero irme
Si muy lindo.
Interesting, I was under the impression that no varieties of "apples" grew in Ecuador.
Me too! I don't think I have ever seen any in a city market but since this video I did see apple trees in another town. They are just so small compared to others.
Ayng. Is the Ecuadorian Aguardiente like the Colombian version that is anisé flavoured?
No it’s actually more like guaro in Costa Rica and cachaca in Brazil which are also made from sugar cane. Actually that’s a great distinguishing factor as Colombia is the only one to use anise. And that flavour I’ve only really seen elsewhere in South America in Argentina in fernet.
The regular kind has no flavour. Although they also have fruit flavoured versions but I think mostly young people drink it.
There is also a real movement to create high quality aguardiente and some of it is aged, which is why I don’t like to call it unaged/young rum.
But in Cuenca I’ve featured a restaurant/bar called Chiplotle (not a typo, letters are twisted so they can avoid a copyright suit), they make cocktails using Canuto which is an aged cocktail. It’s really interesting because aguardiente was once a spirit that Ecuadorians felt that you drank if you couldn’t afford anything better.
But that is changing and I really love this movement.
@@ayngelina isn’t that true of many foods as well? Ribs and Ox Tails were given to the Slaves. Quiche was a peasant dish made from farm staples!
Thanks for explaining this to me. Can’t wait to try some. Sounds almost like moonshine Ecuadorian style!
Not all aguardientes are the same. Each region in Ecuador has its own well actually Cuenca has two. But my favourite is Cana Manabita from Manabí, it's widely considered to be the best. Definitely the smoothest.
sorry I didn't see the chicken. What is the best way to get from Cuenc to Paute? Bus or maybe hire a car or car and driver.
Best depends on what you want to achieve. Bus is cheapest and longer. Driver is faster but more expensive. I don't recommend renting a car unless you're accustomed to driving in Ecuador. But a driver costs about the same as a car rental.
12:35 I wouldnt say the apples are organic unless you really trust and know the seller and have seen how he/she grows the apples. Everyone I know who grows apples here, spray the trees to make all the leaves fall after the harvest. Its done to simulate a winter where the tree goes dormant and drops all its leaves... Not the worst thing to spray since you wont really eat the chemical, but still not organic.... Awesome video though :D
Oh thanks for chiming in on this!
Can anyone provide an answer, in May 2022 I visited Ecuador. I stayed in Quito then took a trip to the Amazon jungle. I took a private bus, on the way back to Quito I saw many unattended papaya stands.
Hello, they are not unattended, usually the owners are inside the house 🏡 if you approach to the papayas they will get out and sell you the fruit
Thanks so much for chiming in Patty!
No one touch neighbors papaya... lol
Have you ever gotten sick from something you ate in Ecuador?
Never but it’s because I eat in popular Ecuadorian restaurants.
@@ayngelina I was curious because I've seen you eating frozen street foods. I once spent the night in a hospital in quito after drinking a batido I bought from a street vendor
But you haven’t seen Azogues yet small city but surrendered by two mountain 🏔 Cojitambo & Abuga witch if you go on top of their hills you’ll enjoy of fantastic views
I’ve driven by so many times. What is the market like?
@@ayngelina is a city . Azogues and of course there’s markets but for me a lot of things are new Leaving 28 years out of my home town
I think azogues is similar altitude of cuenca
