- The best market in Cuenca Ecuador. I share why it's safe to eat in the market, how to get the best price and where to find everything.
Cuenca is one of the most popular cities in Ecuador for a good reason, it's one of the most beautiful and there's so much to do with lots of free art and culture events, museums.
And Cuenca is one of the best spots for traditional Ecuadorian food.
I always stay at the CASA CUENCANA. It's affordable, Ecuadorian owned and so clean and comfortable.

Hi I'm Ayngelina and my full time job is my site BaconisMagic.ca it's all about the best food around the world and how to make it at home.
In 2010 I left a job in advertising, 5 year relationship and sold all my possessions to travel the world. In the last ten years I've had some crazy experiences and even owned a restaurant in Toronto at one time. And prior to 2020 I had been based in Cuba.
When the world shut down I returned to Canada and decided to teach myself video. I wanted to share more than just words and photos but to show people the adventures I have learning about food around the world.
I'm not married. I have no kids. But I do have a lot of local friends who help me discover the best local tips.

Women entrepreneurs at their liberated best! Working hard and smart in order to feed people .. serve humanity .. provide for themselves and their families. Bravo!
They definitely run the market.
Enjoy in my beautiful city
Thank you 😊. If you have any recommendations I'd love to hear them.
I so much enjoy your videos about Cuenca
Well I have lots coming up!
Thanks for the complete tour! This is on my list now, I want to visit Cuenca at the end of the year. 💛❤️ I want to eat and photograph everything!
December is an amazing time to be in Cuenca. They really celebrate Christmas as a Catholic colonial city.
I visited Cuenca in April of this year, and was blown away by not only the city, but this market. I took a cooking class, which included a shopping trip to Mercado 10 de Agosto for our ingredients. Being with a host who knew the market and the vendors was so much fun!
Oh where did you take the class? And what did you make? I'd love to take a class.
I was just there last weekend with a friend. It's crazy how just a couple of months ago I used to watch your videos wishing I was in Cuenca. Now I've been here for over 2 months and it's even better than I anticipated.
Oh I love to hear this! But now you need to start giving me tips of your favourite places so I can check them out when I’m back in the fall. 😊
The glass ceiling looks much cleaner. We enjoyed going there as long as we didn't look up years ago!
Oh that's good to know!
Living there for several years, my all-time favorite market was the Miraflores market off of Avenida de las Americas every Saturday. I visited just about every single market in Cuenca - large and small all over town - and it was hands down the most diverse and spectacular market I ever found! They are outdoors, each vendor has their own tent, many organic growers of produce, fish, meat, eggs, dry goods, food stalls and more. The bus stops right across the street making it easy to get to from anywhere in Cuenca. To me, it more of a real farmer’s market than the ones indoors like 10 de agosto or 9 de octubre. It was as big, if not bigger than those markets, and I looked forward to going every Saturday.
It's also a great market.
Thank you so much for this comprehansive video! I have been in Ecuador - in Cuenca- for 5 weeks now. We have visited this market one time to take it all in and get a lay of the land so to speak. We did buy a few things. This video has given me a better understanding of the market which will allow us to take much better advantage of all that it offers. I SO appreciate your work!
I'm so glad it was helpful. You just have to get out of your comfort zone and find that vendor you connect with so you can start reaping the benefits of the yapa :)
@@ayngelina1
I certainly will do just that! I will be starting with Lourdes as coffee and cacao are at the top of my list! Chao
My favorite Mercado, too. Even though I love all the Mercado's I've visited in Cuenca, 10 Augusto and the surrounding 'mini-mercado' vendors are special
great video
Yes, I have a few that I love as well. It's the closest to me, but also it's so much better than the others in Cuenca in terms of quality.
We love these markets, our favorite is Féria Libre. We love to plop ourselves down in the midst of everything going on around us. Our favorite food is llapingachos.
Coral you are braver than I am! I'm too paranoid of being pickpocketed inside or robbed outside. But I do have a video later next month that features the different types of markets and quickly shot a video there.
Great Video- Thank you! We got to spend an hour there is 2018, but can't wait to go back.... their hornado was amazing. Also, loved the pep talk for people to shop there... we found the vendors generous, kind, and patient with our broken Spanish.
Yes I can understand that people feel uncomfortable or silly when their Spanish isn't great. I am nowhere near fluent but I see it as a sign of respect to at least attempt to communicate in their language and people are so gracious and really appreciate it.
Amazing video , I am planning on visiting Cuenca for a week next time I am in Ecuador and your videos are a real help , now I know where to get groceries , las huecas de noche and where to stay , the apartment that you stayed looks amazing ♥️🙏♥️
Oh I'm so thrilled you're finding this useful!
On our way in the morning! Can’t wait.
Let me know what you think!
Thank you for the video of the 10 the Agosto mercado and for all the information very detailed great job. Thank you
I'm so glad you like it!
Both of you provided so many interesting details about the 10 Augusto market. I'm glad to learn about the innumerable types of potatoes and also the great soup offerings. Three cheers from your loyal fans!
Oh thrilled you enjoyed it! It's such a great market.
Love that market and that part of the neighborhood. The area where you're standing at the end is so lovely and has such a great view of the city. These videos make me so nostalgic (I was there in 2019).
When are you coming back?
@@ayngelina I don't know yet, but I definitely will!
Muy delicioso la comida ecuatoriana 😊❤
I like this market as well. Centrally located and lots to choose from.
Agreed it’s such a good one
Oh boy !! Here I I’m watching you again at the gym trying to work out and you make e hungry 😋 again and again
Well I guess that’s a compliment !
@@ayngelina si, me encaran tus vids
I just loved this videoooooooo!!!! would love to see more
Oh wonderful, are you looking for more markets or similar topics?
Love this. Thanks so much. I want to be there NOW.
I love this market. Some people go to 9 de Octubre, but it's not a great neighbourhood and not comparable in quality. Here you can eat the food and trust the quality as it's packed with locals.
Bendiciones para todos.
Muy gentil, gracias Gladys!
Love going to the market
Me too!
Well, we've been to this Wonderful Market several times, however you've presented a few new details. Did you film this roughly 2-3 months ago?
Very nicely done! (Like # 335) Thanks for the Spanish subtitles.
I shot this over mother's day weekend :)
Gracias 🇪🇨
De nada!
Upstairs with the juices is a very nice gentleman named “Roland”, he speaks very good English and he can get you anything that you want. He sits you down, takes your order and within 5 minutes you are eating and drinking. I just had the Hornado yesterday and I highly recommend it.
Oh yes I know Roland, he's the second one in and a really nice guy.
@@ayngelina Yes he is, we have very pleasant conversations and he helps me with my Spanish.
He is sweet. I actually insisted he speak to me in Spanish so I would improve. The vendor to his left is also really such a sweet woman. I featured her in the "My life in Cuenca" video.
@@ayngelina That’s funny, I ask him the same thing, he helps me when I stumble for words. I have found that the whole crew in that section is awesome. I really enjoyed this video. Keep up the good work 👍.
Thank you 💜
Great market
It really is!
Great video Ayngelina! I can't wait to try the tripe. It is such a complicated ingredient to prepare. I'll probably eat it everyday when I'm there.
So many great things in Cuenca, I have A LOT of food videos there if you haven't checked out my huecas series yet.
Oh yes I have, thanks for all the advice. Can't wait to try the huecas.@@ayngelina
Just added mercado 10 de Agusto to my Ecuador bucket list :) Right now im stuck behind my computer dreaming about it
When do you plan to come visit?
10:16 hmmm perhaps in the Southern part of Ecuador bread isnt that much of a norm (Probably why i could never find a lot of bakerys in Cuenca lol) But I feel like in most of the Imbabura province its normal to have bread for breakfast... I lived with an indigous family for a few months and they would wake up at 3am to start making the dough so it will be ready by 6am. They would normally sell out by 8am... And in Otavalo in the centro theres basicly a bakery around every corner and they are open by 6am... Always amazes me how diverse Ecuador is
I think you're right as a few people mentioned this. In Cuenca they historically had bakeries in one section of the city. It's by where I stay. Sometimes I wake up early at 6 and think oh I'll go get bread but nope! Even my favourite old wood fired oven one doesn't open until 8am.
I love big co-op style markets. This one looks like it would be a lot of fun for me.
You can get almost everything here, if you can't find it you just need to ask.
@@ayngelina to indulge my home chef whims
Lots of unique things you won't find in the supermarkets.
Great video girl
Thank you!!
I'm an hornado addict but the vendors in 10 de agosto are very stingy with their cuerito (the best part). My favorite place is at feria libre - right at the entrance, next to a bootleg dvd shop. Not only is it the best hornado but they also have the most delicious llapingachos in Cuenca. The hornado lady is only there on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Now this is a great tip thank you. Have you been out to Gualaceo?
@@ayngelina No i haven't! Which hornado spot do you recommend out there?
I featured one here: czcams.com/video/hvmxUv0dhuo/video.html but Gualaceo as a whole is a total food lovers paradise. I think it should be a UNESCO heritage site for food, a lot of Cuencanos go there on the weekend to eat.
Thanks for sharing
My pleasure, let me know what else you would like to see.
@@ayngelina Everything about Cuenca, love your video. I’m going to Cuenca next year ,your videos are really helpful
well I have more to come this month and next!
Great video- however, super wrong about how in Ecuador we do not eat bread for breakfast and bakeries not opening until later in the day . Grew up on cafe con pan , just thought I’d clarify ! Lol
That's what I've been told consistently by Cuencanos and Quiteños as bakeries aren’t open early morning but they are open late into the evening. Thanks so much for sharing your experience, what town did you grow up?
In Quito most panaderías 🥖 open between 6-8 am, we do have it on breaksfast (I double checked this opening times in Google right now). The same goes for Ambato, where bread is a very important thing.
Whereas in the coast they don’t usually eat bread in the morning cause they prefer green platain for breakfast.
@@ayngelina great content though. Really enjoy your videos ! I grew up in Guayaquil
Thanks for the clarification!
Thank you! And I really do appreciate your feedback and sometimes what people tell me isn't true for everyone!
hello again .... looks delicious mocho soup...
are you still in Ecuador...?
oh bad away I was in ECUADOR tree weeks ago ..
Sad not there right now but I’ll be back in the autumn.
Ok... Subscribed. Like the channel. Please include prices and quantities...
Hi you look beautiful and nice when you talking
Thank you for the kind words.
Do you have any vids on flying to Cuenca and visa requirements and rental issues and things to look out for and look forward to. Sorry to annoy you. But you are the first person we have watched who wasn't totally insufferable.
That's very kind of you to say. It's not a bother. I do have videos of flying to Ecuador but it addressed a lot of Covid issues. To get to Cuenca I recommend flying into Guayaquil as flights are usually less expensive as it's a smaller airport and it's a quick drive or regional flight to Cuenca. Tourist Visas for Americans and Canadians are issued on arrival for 90 days. If you want to stay longer on the 91 day you need to pay for a visa extension, which I think is 133 but very easy to do. And any time after in a year requires temporary residency. In Ecuador you can't do visa runs like other countries where you get a new 90 days.

Yes in all of Latin America
Loved the tour, but must say the soup did NOT look appealing to me.
Some of the best soups are a bit "rustic" but I know offal isn't for everyone :)
Травы до фига
Hahaha maybe?
Why is your friend wearing a mask there's no mask mandates and Ecuador
Andres my guide? At the time we shot this Cuenca still had mask mandates. Although the President announced no mandates he didn't actually have the authority. It's not handled nationally but by province and cities can also enact them.
Actually I believe Cuenca (and Guayaquil) still have them as it prepares for the next wave coming in the autumn. Right now I believe 4 in 10 are testing positive in Ecuador. Cuencanos have always supported wearing masks both inside and outside as they saw the devastation in 2020 in Guayaquil where they had mass graves whereas Cuenca was quick to mandate masks and weren't affected as much.
I only took mine off to be on camera so in some cases where I'm speaking but not on camera I'm speaking through my mask.
@@ayngelina oh im sorry, but thank you for responding, and im enjoying your vids,
In response to your question on your video on Ice cream in cuenca, i think if you made different categories of things within each community and did videos pertaining to that specific subject matter would be a good idea, like the ice cream vid that you did. It was very informative and yet specific. So now take one subject at a time and expound and embellish it! Thank you! And Good day!
No worries at all. I get that question a lot. And so I like to explain why people in Cuenca still wear masks happily. You don't see the same on the coast at all.
And thank you for the suggestion! If you have a topic you'd like to know about let me know 😊
@@ayngelina ok thanks!
