- Walking tour of Cuenca Ecuador considered the most beautiful city in Ecuador. I'm spending the day with my friend Andres, a tour guide who knows the best things to do in Cuenca.
I always stay at the CASA CUENCANA. It's affordable, Ecuadorian owned and so clean and comfortable.

Many people retire in Cuenca Ecuador, there are lots of Expats. But it isn't a gringo town, it's a colonial city with lots of Ecuadorian culture, history and heritage...and known to have the best food in Ecuador.
We stopped at the corte de justicia or the justice court then el Seminario San Luis which is at one point it was where you would study to become a priest and is now really a court of a bunch of different restaurants, most of them are international and so I wasn't really keen to have breakfast there.
Instead I tried Angelus which is a very local spot right on the main square. Normally when you kind of go to a restaurant on the main square, you think it's super touristy but really this is all like Ecuadorians coming here. I got mote pillo and I am first with, like, oh my gawd, there's some kind of crazy cheese in here, but no, not at all.
When you come to Ecuador and you have the eggs, you will notice that the yolks here are so orange and bright and that's because you're probably going to be having free range eggs. Mote pillo is a classic Ecuadorian breakfast with hominy, eggs and cheese.
We also visited both the New Cathedral in Ecuador which is home to stained glass by an Indigenous Artist and climbed to the top of the Cathedral for $1.
At El Monasterio del Carmen, or the Carmen Monastery 12 nuns live here cloistered. There are actually two cloistered monasteries in Cuenca, but only a handful left in all of Latin America. And nuns come in here. And they never leave. They dedicate their lives to being inside the monastery for their life. They are famous for agua de pitimas, and pitimas means more please. It's made with herbs and flower petals for 50 cents
This is supposed to cure a number of things from insomnia to stomach problems to if you have skin problems. I've had this before because I had dry skin coming to this like very arid Andes.
Homero Ortega is a luxury Panama Hat museum and shop. They had people who are very famous from Ben Affleck to Johnny Depp. Hats here can cost up to $2500 but are sold for three times that outside Ecuador.
Lunch outside Cuenca in the San Joaquin neighbourhood at Cristol del Consuelo. We got the Bandeja Cristo del Consuelo which has a number of different kinds of meat, some sides, some avocado.
The Turi bus takes you on a tour of Cuenca to the Mirador or lookoff. It is only $5. Once there they offer you a glass of canelazo. But we did not follow the group.
We came up to the very top to the bar cafeteria restaurante La Colina. Canelazo is an alcoholic drink made with aguardiente, very typical drink in the Andes with aguardiente, an unaged sugarcane alcohol and they mix it with naranjilla fruit cinnamon and sugar. Everyone, again has their own recipe.

Those eggs looked deli! That canelazo plus the wonderful views look like a great way to end the day.
And the potatoes, it's hard not to eat ALL the potatoes.
This video was well organized, visually stimulating, and gave my wife and I tons of information to consider before traveling to Cuenca, Ecuador. One of the best vloggers we have found this far. Thanks for being so freakin' amazing Ayngelina. Thanks a million times over. 🙏🏾🙌🏾💚💯
Oh wow, you made my day. I plan on sharing two videos a week until the holidays so I hope you subscribe and stick around.
Correction. The Old Cathedral was a cathedral. The cathedral is the chair of the local bishop and Cuenca has always had a bishop. The Old Cathedral has been deconsecrated and is now used as a museum and performance space. The Sinfonia de Cuenca plays regularly there. Very good video.
A lot of variety to do in that beautiful city .thanks for sharing this video
Thanks so much for watching.
I just came back from Ecuador & we are planning on going back the end of the year for a few months, Cuenca is a must see.. our plan is to spend the entire 2 months in Cuenca .. it's a Amazing area & easy to talk to the ppl as several speak English, a must do is the produce market !!
Yes Cuenca is such a gem. I'm actually shooting more videos from Cuenca this week!
Love the architecture
Isn't it gorgeous here, it was based on Spanish architecture.
Awesome video Ayngelina! All these places I’ve not yet seen before & look forward to them myself. Very glad you showed us the hat shop and the shopping tips. I’m definitely going to that store.
It's such a great spot!
Was there on September. My favorite part of it was the food. My wife and I love the mojitos made with real fruit!!! Got the passion fruit mojito ande jeez....wish they could make like that in the USA. My wife loved the chicken soup, guata, mote sucio, and cafe con leche. We went to Gualaceo, Sigsig, Chordeleg, and Laguna de Baza. Spend sometime in Azogues too. Took my wife for the first time since she is from Mexico.
Oh you guys ate all the good food. Did you have cut? I have a video of eating it in Gualaceo and without a doubt it was my favourite.
@@ayngelina yeap...we ate a lot. The best dish we had 3 days prior our return flight was chancho a la barbosa (sort of like hornado) but was more juicy and tender. It was well worth it being there for about 2 weeks and 3 days. My wife liked Cuenca but she preferred Santa Isabel where my uncle has a house.
@@edgaryuquilima7191 Santa Isabel in Yunguilla?
FINALLY, someone did a proper vlog on Cuenca. I skipped over the food stuff, but the rest of it was really interesting. It was refreshing to see someone actually provide information on what we're looking at. I loved how you showed some of the hidden gems, like the courthouse. And I loved how you talked about the indegenous elements and construction of the churches, and presented a factual, non-biased view on the treatment of the Indegenous people/sites. I felt like I was actually there getting a tour. And although I'm not a fan of that particular genre, I have to applaud you for putting Spanish music, instead of using that annoying English music the vloggers always put, which completely kills the authentic vibe.
Excellent job! I'm very picky when it comes to travel videos, but you just earned yourself a new subscriber.
Thank you so much, Andres is an excellent guide. Although I hope you like food as it's my focus. And food = culture 😉
Greetings from a Cuenca New Yorker. Since this pandemic I have not been able to go back so I really appreciated this. I would love to see a walking tour so I can see my streets my people a little more. Thank you so much
Well you are in luck. I do have a few Cuenca videos coming up over the coming weeks. Also have you watched my Cuenca huecas video
THANKS for sharing. E joy all the beauty of My Country 🇪🇨🇪🇨
I am so thrilled to be here. If you have any recommendations I would love to hear them.
I have to say...I have been very focused on Manta as a place to retire. But now I'm being forced to expand my thought process. Cuenca seems incredible. I'll need to visit both and spend some real time in Ecuador in general.
Absolutely, I think many people think oh I'm going to go and buy a place right away and then find out 6 months later that the city isn't right for them. No city in Ecuador is perfect. For me I'd rather live in Cuenca and visit the beach for long weekends...or really Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday because I hate crowds. Cuenca has more culture but the coast has better weather...it's a toughie!
I didn't know Ecuador is so great for retirement! I love the variety of things you showcase in your vlogs (architecture, history lessons, good, etc).
Lots of Americans retire down here, you can drink the water from the tap in Cuenca and the health care is so good.
Cool tour. Looks like you did a great job showing Cuenca. Obrigado.
Thank you! There is so much about Cuenca to love.
Que genial que te esfuerzas por decir las cosas en español Ayngelina!! Super buen video y Andres muy buen guía! new subscriber here!
Muchas gracias. Aprenderé poco a poco!
The colour in the Mote pillo comes from the Achiote that is a spice commonly used in Ecuadorian cuisine the same thing with the llapingachos. (It is neither the yolk nor the potatoes)
Also, I was trying to find the number of potato types in Ecuador and I found an article that says Ecuador is home of 580 potato types, But probably there are more as in the Andean area can be found more 4000 potato variants.
Thanks so much for the info!
Thanks so much for this video tour! Love the different places you visited, as well as the warm drink at the end!
Oh I'm so thrilled you enjoyed it.
@@ayngelina Yes, liked the cathedrals and restaurants.
Cool! I really enjoyed Cuenca when I went last month. They were charging $2 to go up the cathedral when I went. No biggie. Really nice video!! And I recommend people visit Cuenca 👌🙂
Thanks so much for the kind words. Yes it does cost to go to the top, but that helps with restoration and the view is so worth it 😍
Excellent video, thanks for posting.
Thank you so much. I'm posting videos twice a week from Ecuador. If there's anything you'd like to see let me know!
Nice video. I will be staying in El Centro in 1 month. Nice to see all the good places that are within walking distance.
One of the things I love about Cuenca is that so much exists in Centro.
Welcome to my country Ecuador 🇪🇨
Thank you so much! Do you have any recommendations for traditional food?
Looks great..!
It's such a spectacular spot.
This video is Amazing!
Thanks so much
Más vídeos así 👏, mostrando lugares turísticos de esa hermosa ciudad
Gracias 😊
I love your way of filmmaking! Great quality, great shoots and great storytelling. I enjoyed a lot 😁. Greetings!
P.S. I came here from the Facebook group.
Thank you so much. Your kind words made my day.
Excelente video 👌
Gracias!
Such a beautiful city!
It really is!
I’m from Cuenca Ecuador and many the places you visited are pretty touristy for foreigners and even locals. Most locals will not go to those places bc it can be pretty pricy. Nice places to go but not local friendly . There’s many places for half the price and cheaper and better experiences. I hope you enjoyed my beautiful city .
Yes it's my 5th time, I love Cuenca. For this video it's important to show people the tourist sites like the Cathedral and Monastery because there is a reason they are so popular.
But I would disagree that Cristol del Consuelo in San Joaquin and Tutto Freddo are for tourists as it will full the day I was there with Cuencanos. Yes tourists would likely go to that location as it's in the centre but the chain is for Ecuadorians.
The next Cuenca video is about huecas, I would love to hear what you think about where I went there.
Una de las ciudades de Ecuador, muy bonita y su gente de un trato excelente.
Tienes razón
Excelente guia😚
El mejor!
That was fun! You can never go wrong with breakfast in a main square anywhere right? 😋
Usually I'm not a fan of eating on the main square but this is the one spot you'll find locals too!
Que bonito es ver cómo conocen mi país
Gracias
So excited to try these food items you mention in your video. I'm interested in the Agua de Pitimas, do you feel safe drinking the waters and juices offered by street vendors? I just want to avoid travellers diarrhea. Look forward to your next videos.
Yes in Cuenca you can drink water from the tap, it's completely safe. However in other places in Ecuador where you cannot drink the water, locals won't drink the water either. And so you'll find the places that make fresh fruit juice etc have a big cooler of filtered water that they use. This is especially true in the Andes where they have mountains and resevoirs of water - I actually show this in a video coming this Sunday :)
Great video
Thanks!
Oh cool! Welcome to my city
I'd love any recommendations you may have.
Thanks for your opinion Ecuador is amazing!!!

It’s not piti, it’s pite which means a bit or small amount. Tomate de árbol does grow on a tree unlike regular tomatoes 🍅
Oh you're right I just looked at what I said it should have been a little bit more please as the phrase. And of course tomate de árbol grows on a tree, hence árbol although not the same as a regular tomato 😊
Cuenca tiene unos lugares muy bonitos para visitar 🫶🏾

European features is the artist conception.
Yes of course. But here in the Américas we are so accustomed to seeing it with European features that showing it without is rare.

Any recommendation for a private tour by a native of Cuenca?
My tour is with an Ecuadorian guide. you can find his contact info in the description of this video. He also just happens to be my friend so he gave me one of his official tours for the video.
@@ayngelina Thank U very much for replying. Can ask how much he would charge for a private tour? I speak some Spanish and I am a Latino from the US, but have idea of becoming a expat in retirement.
Andrés is bilingual so he can do a tour in either language. He also has a familiarization tour for new expats who want to understand how things work etc. Not sure of his prices but you're cutting out the middle man by going through an agency. Both his Instagram and email are in the description. If you explain your situation I'm sure he can help with a quote.
Nice video. I was just there om vacation, We have a condo that we rent it by the week if you are ever interested
Oh that's great to know! And do you have any special spots you love?
Great video and tons of info but please stop calling Panama hats, there are not hats from Panama they are originally Ecuadorian and Panama does not have material to make it either.
You open my appetite with all that variety of delicious foods and I am assuming are organic 🥰
Hey Tony, I'm not sure if you watched the segment about the Panama Hats but the reason why they are called this is because Ecuador was contracted to make hats for all of the workers who were building the Panama Canal. They are hand made, never by machine and can withstand the brutal heat from the sun. They became world famous from this singular event and even if you buy an official Panama Hat today in Panamá they are actually made in Ecuador. In the video I go to one of the most famous manufacturers and hats can cost up to $1500.
Miss my Cuntry 🇪🇨 😔
Where are you from in Ecuador?

All over the world the Roman Catholic religion built over old ancient pagan worship places or buildings. Claiming it for supposed “Christian worship” but it is all ancient paganism mixed with Christianity. That symbol of sun and moon worship is all over the world in all their buildings. Sumerian ancient pagan religion that spread all over the world including the Americas.
Yes! Which is why so many Christian holidays actually fall on days Indigenous Peoples celebrated.

Panamá hat real name is "Paja Toquilla" Hat and is Ecuadorian not from Panamá
Yes that is its Spanish name, and I included it in this video and the one you commented on in Sigsig to explain why it is called the Panama Hat in English, when the hats came from Ecuador. 😊
Love Ecuador
