  • Cuenca Ecuador is vegan + vegetarian friendly with lots of traditional and modern restaurants that even meat eaters will love.
    You can find both vegetarian and vegan versions of traditional Ecuadorian food along with international options and modern takes like jack fruit "pulled pork" sandwich.
    Here is a sampling of five restaurants in Cuenca I visited to try their almuerzo, a set lunch in Ecuador, ranging from $2.50 - $3.95.

    I am not a vegetarian and the truth is that I am one of those who run away from vegetables, but after eating at "Comer Sanar Vivir" my appreciation for nature increased exponentially.
    What a good report and what a rich tour you took around the city, grateful for providing us with this gastronomic information, for those of us who are lovers of good food, it is very valuable.

    Thank you for your review of these veggie restaurants, Ayngelina! Was wondering how easy it is in Cuenca to identify GF options - do they just say "Gluten Free" there, or is there a spanish translation? So excited to get back to Cuenca to give these places a try. Keep on making all this great content, please 🤤

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  Před 2 lety +2

      Oh I'm so glad you liked it! So yes in modern restaurants you'll also see GF, V, DF indicated on menus and people will be aware. The term is "sin gluten" which means without gluten. If you go to huecas (hole in the wall restaurants), markets or street vendors you'll need to know a bit more Spanish as not everyone will be aware of gluten. So a dish which may appear not to have flour in it could be thickened with it. In this case you need to know if it has "harina de trigo" or wheat flour, which is an issue. This is different than "harina de maiz" which is corn flour and ok. But Ecuador has a lot of different flours but these are the two most common.

      In the cities it's easy and then some of the more expat type towns like Olon etc you could get foreign vegetarian food and vegetarian ceviche is becoming very popular. Some small towns they'd understand vegetarian and might be able to accommodate with lentils/beans, salads. It's becoming a lot more common so I'd expect most people would try to help you. Happy Cow would be a great resource for each spot. I also have a website about food (that's my job) and so it would be good to familiarize yourself with traditional Ecuadorian food that is vegetarian. Tortillas, llapingachos, locro, etc are veggie based.

      As a rule Ecuadorian beef is mediocre. They don't age it and so it's rarely good, unless you go somewhere that specializes in it. In other videos I eat beef that is great but I won't just order it anywhere. That said in Cuenca quality food is not expensive. I think that makes it the best food city because you can eat at cheap places but have great home cooked food. But also because there are so many foreigners and Ecuadorians who lived abroad in Cuenca you can find specialty meat markets with better cuts that will be far cheaper than you have at home.
