  • The Otavalo market in Imbabura Ecuador is world famous, but don't leave without traditional Ecuadorian food like catzos, churos and the best hornado in Ecuador.
    The Imbabura Province just outside Quito Ecuador is home to the most famous markets in Ecuador - Otavalo. Most people only come on Saturday, shop the artisanal market and leave.
    But there's more than just the fabulous market. In fact I spent most of it in the food market! In the video we share with you
    Catzos: white beetles
    Churos: snails
    Jugo de Sabila: Aloe juice
    Chaulafán Otavaleño: epic Ecuadorian rice and noodle dish
    Hornado with morcilla: epic roasted pork with sausage and llapingachos (potato cakes), mote (hominy) and encurtido .

    My friend and I are going to Otavalo eventually and hope my husband comes too.
    Otavalo has been a place I have wanted to see for a long time and seeing some of what you had to experience makes the journey look like about a 3 nighter. So many places I want to go to.

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  Před 2 lety

      You could do Cotacachi and Otavalo, they are not far and for me had the most difficult to find food. Otavalo is pretty cheap for accommodation. We stayed in a hotel for $20/night. The place is packed on Saturdays but then really clears out so you can do the market and check out the area without it being so chaotic.

    We haven't yet had the pleasure of going to Otavalo, however your virtual experience was well done, and warmly received.
    Kudos to you and Andrés both for being brave enough to try the critters. Speaking of Andrés, does he typically advise folks on his
    tours to comfortably consume ají without any concern of illness? I think you mentioned some of them being acid or vinegar based.
    I imagine these would be less bacterial breeding grounds. We've only been sick once in our travels, and know exactly what it was. It wasn't ají,
    however since it's typically open and on tables to share, we didn't want to chance it. We will return to Ecuador, and we'd
    like to feel more confident about our ability to enjoy the aji. Do you and Andrés have any tips for Ají Safety in Ecuador?

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  Před 2 lety

      So a lot of tour guides take people to "safer" places that are tourist friendly but to be honest I find they are the worst spots. I just asked him about aji (we're in Quilotoa shooting a video) and he said if you can trust a restaurant to eat in it then you know their aji is also good because if a restaurant is full of Ecuadorians it also must have good aji. This is why we mostly go to huecas, we know that they are busy and the turnover of food ...and aji...is daily. And it's a big reason why I don't get sick.
