  • A day in the life in Cuenca Ecuador. I share where I stay in Cuenca, favourite places to eat, shop, drink and an amazing free museum.
    Cuenca is one of the most popular cities in Ecuador for a good reason, it's one of the most beautiful and there's so much to do with lots of free art and culture events, museums.
    And Cuenca is one of the best spots for traditional Ecuadorian food.
    And you can find the CASA CUENCANA here, my favourite spot to stay and where you can book with Andres:

    Need an English speaking guide in Ecuador? I hired my friend Andres to tour the country, he's got an SUV and is a licensed national guide. The best way to reach him is on Whatapp: +593 98 711 9550 and second best by email at andrivet77 AT gmail.com.
    His family also owns a series of small hotels in Cuenca called La Casa Cuencana and you can book directly with him.

    // MORE ABOUT ME!//
    Hi I'm Ayngelina and my full time job is my site BaconisMagic.ca it's all about the best food around the world and how to make it at home.
    In 2010 I left a job in advertising, 5 year relationship and sold all my possessions to travel the world. In the last ten years I've had some crazy experiences and even owned a restaurant in Toronto at one time. And prior to 2020 I had been based in Cuba.
    When the world shut down I returned to Canada and decided to teach myself video. I wanted to share more than just words and photos but to show people the adventures I have learning about food around the world.
    I'm not married. I have no kids. But I do have a lot of local friends who help me discover the best local tips.

    Well done video Aynge. Very familiar with Cuenca as I visited there for the past 12 years or so to visit my father-in-law who passed away last year. Love the various types of bread as well and the cleanliness of the town. It can get very cold sometimes, with ice on the windows at night. I solved that problem with a small ceramic heater I took with me from NY. I don't know if this is still happening there but air pollution was becoming a problem there, not only from the vehicles' exhausts but from blowing up the mountains nearby for construction material.

    Vaya jamás había escuchado lo del chachi, es nuevo para mí ese nombre, lo que sí había escuchado mucho es que en Cañar y en Cuenca se comen muchos los chiviles o chiguiles y no se si tengan el mismo sabor, el chachi me recuerda al Vicundo comida típica del Carchi que es casi la misma preparación solo que versión dulce, le ponen harina de mote, queso, huevos mantequilla y panela y se lo toma con café. Algo típico también de Cuenca son las hayacas y las tortillas de tiesto dulce y salada que por cierto son bien ricas las de dulce, cuando voy allá lo que pido son esas tortillas y los tamales! ah y lo de la Malta es cebada, es lo que tiene la cerveza solo que esta no tiene alcohol y no está fermentada, esa si lo pueden consumir los niños. It's amazing the photos and videos that phone is capable of. An optical zoom lens is about all it lacks to be semi-pro. Well, manual focus too (but that's just software). It can really do justice to a scene within its range. The 6 has some optical zoom built in and it helps expand that range. Shocking how far things have come since the first digital camera we bought, like 1.4mp iirc. That thing brought back images from Ecuador. We knew they weren't near as good as film but a heck of a lot cheaper. 🤯

By the way, i also have a question about food, is there a "Food Truck" scene in Cuenca as they do in Quito for the past 6 years or so, i think they opened or allowed Food Trucks in Guayaquil now, so, was wondering if Cuenca has food trucks and where exactly are they located and what type of foods do they offer? Thanks for your time and keep up with your videos! will keep watching

      Thanks so much. My primary camera is a SONY ZV1 and secondarily a GoPro Hero 9 and DJI Mini 2 Drone. At one time Cuenca had lot of food trucks and even a container park, but not anymore probably because it wasn't cheap.
      To be honest, I don't think they are needed. The food trucks had burgers for $7 when you can get them for cheaper and better in huecas.
      Cuenca's food scene is a bit different, you can find high quality food for less money in Cuenca in huecas. Also the traditional set lunch of almuerzos is much better in Cuenca.
      Huecas in safe neighbourhoods are hard to find in Guayaquil, they exist but are much more expensive. And in Quito a lot of them didn't survive the last two years. Cuenca is definitely a food city, and is committed to traditional food at inexpensive prices.
      I also have a video on Cuenca huecas on the channel. I also have a vegetarian video that will show you almuerzos in Cuenca. Vegetarian are much more expensive (under $5) but you can go as low as $2 for an almuerzo in Cuenca and have great food.

    Hi Ayngelina! Thanks so much for your video. It was very educational. Cuenca is on my short list for retiring to. Actually, I'll still be working remotely, so I have a very important question. Is the internet there reliable, Or does it drop due to various weather conditions? Is the quality different on the weekends vs the week since it may be used more on weekends. Thanks so much for your response!

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  Před 11 měsíci

      So this is a bit of a complicated question. Yes there is definitely good internet...depending on where you are. There are several coworking places that have lightning fast wifi if you need it. I found weekends some of my CZcams lives would cut out because of where I was. You need to ask where you're staying to do a speed test because the old historic buildings have very thick walls and so it can be tough. But it depends on neighbourhood and if you need to stream. But regular wifi is always fine.

    Hi Ayngelina, can you confirm something for us? We will be there in Cuenca in a few weeks. We've heard that while you can't drink the water from the tap in Quito, you can in Cuenca. Is this true?

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  Před rokem

      Yes it’s true. Some locals drink water from the tap in Quito but Andres never did but it’s well known that the water in Cuenca is safe. The source is Cajas national park and the city runs the water system.
      As well when you arrive in Ecuador please drink twice the amount of water you normally would to avoid issues with altitude. It’s totally normal to feel tired, out of breath and even a little queasy but water will help alleviate that. I find after 5-7 days I’ve acclimated but count your glasses of water and make sure it’s at least one an hour two is better.

    Hi Ayngelina, just wondering what kind of drone you use for your videos. We are returning to Ecuador for visit this summer and are considering bringing a drone. We'll be traveling through out the country.

    • @ayngelina
      @ayngelina  Před 2 lety

      I use a DJI Mini 2. A drone is complicated here. There are so many regional airports in cities like Cuenca making them no fly zones and the coast can be very windy so you need to get up early to fly them or sometimes just before sunset works.
      Some people have been able to unlock Cuenca to fly on certain blocks but I've never been able to find anywhere in the historic district that allows it. I also gave up in Latacunga but was able to unlock in Esmeraldas, you'll need an Ecuadorian phone number to do so as you have to receive a text so they know who you are in case you fly anywhere you're not supposed to.

      By the way, when you're in Quito again and have a chance, you might want to check out Heladeria San Augustin. Very interesting. The thing about the museo PumaPongo, and for all museums, is that it is wrong to think you can visit the entire museum in one day. It is good to say, 'ok, today I will visit the section on money history in EC' just visit that part, then leave to come back another day. I've done this in all the big cities, and don't get burned out after a few hours. After visiting museo Pumapongo, I learned that EC was occupied in 1940 by Peru!!!! I was shocked. Most Ecuadorians don't know this. Anyway, I can go on, but won't.
    I love birds, but neither have visual equipment, etc. so feel as though I am lost here.

      Yes because it's free it makes it a great place to visit whenever you want. The relationship between Ecuador and Peru is challenging, when Gran Colombia broke up Peru thought they would acquire Ecuador - but the people here had a very different idea. In some videos I share Peruvians have been a bit aggressive about comparing the two countries. I love both and just wish we could recognize they are similar but also very different and move on.
