Current Bark River knives don't have fat geometry but only a blended micro bevel. So applying water stones in a regular way always gives them the keenest edge.
Thanks so much for your sharpening videos you have taught me so much and inspired me to sharpen as good as you do keep the vids coming love them and happy hunting.
I tried your method on my Benchmade 556 and a couple other Klein utility knives using 1200 and then 5000 grit waterstones. My imitation of your technique needs a lot of refinement but your process makes absolute sense. Everything I sharpened with this method became as sharp or sharper then the original factory edge. Thank you so much for the explanation of your process.
Very enjoyable experience watching you sharpen. I've been watching your videos for quite a while now but never get tired of your content! I love when you go fishing and catch trout. Have you done a video on your fishing gear? If not I would love to know what you use.. So I can prepare for spring and summer!

Hey Wako, I know we are both very satisfied with bark river black and white compound but have you considered the Bark river Emulsions? A friend send me something similar (1 micron) it looks promising. I want to try a set from 6 micron to 0.2 micron to see it's mirror finish.
Hello, I have never thought of a finer compound than the BR white one which seems enough for me. My interest is the smallest or the most appropriate apex angle for each steel. I know 3V takes a very small angle still don't know what angle Elmax takes yet. I hope this sharp Elmax won't take chipping. It now has as small an angle as my 3V Fox River. Thanks.
virtuovice the emulsions are more abrasive than the stropping compounds. They're meant to be used not unlike the stones you use for reprofiling and sharpening.
@@BOOSTEDLASER I don't think so. Elmax stays sharp very long. But I suppose its steel property has micro brittleness inevitably regardless of the angle. Thanks.
Hi Wako-San, for the more wear resistant steels, have you considered the Naniwa Diamond Stones? Wanted to ask whether you have any experience or opinion about them as there isn’t much documentation on them in the US. Thank you!
Hi, love your channel. I've been trying your techniques and getting better. wanted to ask you what you thought about putting a scandivex grind using wet stones on the Survive Knives sabre grind GSO 4.1. The Bark Rivers seem to lend themselves more effectively to removing the micro bevel to scandivex. Do yu have any experience with reprofiling any of the Survive Knives line? I have a GSO 4.1 and a new GSO 10 ordered and waiting for it to be sent out. I love the grinds you create and want to put them on the Survive Knives. Thanks for your vids and any thoughts you might share.
I think it's a very good idea. I ever did almost the same thing to my Ambush knives though their grinds were a little higher than yours. The Survive Knives is known to be made out of 3V and you will need a very coarse stone like Shapton Pro #120. Thanks.
Pls can u do a video which kind of sharpening method such as water stone diamond stone, leather strop, oil stone is suited for which kind of edge or grind. Thanks
Hello Wako! I been wanting to ask you about your modified Bravo 1.25 you made a video about some time ago. Did you make that drop point yourself an if so, how?
I did it myself by using a belt sander. The belt sander generates much heat and unless we cool the blade with water after every pass, the tip or a thin portion gets burning red and loose the heat treat. Thanks.
Hey @virtuovice I am "knife people" I have a question about knife steels with all other variables being equal. So cpm4v vs Elmax vs Cpm20cv edge retention. Which is best in your opinion? Thanks @virtuvice
Hi i would like to ask you a question. I see that you make most of your knifes with no secondary bevel. How do you prevent chipping and edge rolling? I did 3 knifes like that one was a kitchen and one was a small fixed blade and a Sog Seal Pup all of them all had chips on the edge in no time. Thank you Alex
Zero secondary bevel in a small angle like 30 degrees inclusive needs quality steels like 3V in order not to take rolls or chips. SOG is AUS8 and doesn't hold it. Thanks.
I'm having troubles sharpening my gunny hunter elmax, could you please tell me what stones I should use? I have a strop with green and black compound from BRKT and 2&4 micron emulsions for my other strop. I have been trying for months and no progress and I think I'm only making it worse haha Also any other videos of yours you might recommend would be much appreciated too!!
Shapton Ha-no-kuromaku 1000, 2000, 5000 stones are recommended. I don't change the blade direction when sharpening the belly to keep its line. If we change the blade direction perpendicular to the belly line, it must shallow the important belly line. czcams.com/video/BIa30Fd2kug/video.html
Good morning from Greece. I'd like to ask you what is your opinion about electric work sharper machines! such as Work Sharp Multi-Sharpener Ken Onion Edition, for example. Do you think that do the same job as waterstones? thank you.
Hand sharpening goes as intended once you get the basic knowledge and skill. It's free and art. I sharpen once a week at least to enjoy it. Using the hand sharpened edge in the field inspires me to the next sharpening.
Hi. In your video Explanation of my honing method, you turned the handle throughout the belly portion to make perpendicular all parts of the belly. In this video you have changed to lifting the handle up, and not turning it. Would you please explain why the change? Thank you.
Hi, I noticed the way I sharpened the belly portion perpendicularly to it tends to straighten it. So I changed the way not to round the blade but to raise the handle. Then I found the important belly line is kept. Thanks.
I cannot get the Shapton stones with the wooden base in the USA. Do you know if the Shapton stones you use are equivalent to the Shapton Pro Stones we get in the USA?
Amazon only has Shapton pro and Shapton glass. Wako-san uses the Shapton stones with the wooden base. Are they the same as the Sahpton pro? I mainly have Chosera.
Shapton Pro series is known to be the same as Ha-no-kuromaku series. The Pro or Ha-no-kuromaku 1.000 grit stone is the best sharpening stone when the edge has micro chips or micro bevels. Its real grit seems like 600 or so.

Your technique is great, but it is almost impossible to not scratch the blade that way. I feel like there must be a good way to prevent scratching without changing your sharpening technique at all. Putting duck tape on it would be an easy solution, but I don't really like putting duck tape on knives... Maybe note papers? I don't know, but it is worth trying.
Beast of the Far East Try using some blue painters tape . Duct tape doesn't work as well as blue painters tape because it's a lot thicker. Blue painters tape has enough adhesive to bond well with the steel on the knife and also thin enough that it doesn't become a burden while sharpening.
You can remove all traces of scratches with uchigimori or sandpaper after you have finished sharpening. Wet & Dry Sandpaper of #1200+ works well, then finish it off with a metal polish and you will have a perfect flawless mirror.
