The pro guys will for the most part tell you, to rotate that knife to get the curved portion. I have practiced, and tried only rotating the knife to keep the tangent in the correct position, I just can't do it! Lifting up the knife to get the curved portion is just so much easier. I have no idea how people rotate the blade and keep a consistent angle. Its an enigma to me.
I am so very happy I have not started the convex change to my Ka Bar Becker 17 yet. I have practiced on other knives your techniques and have had good results to date. Thanks for the up-date for the job.
Thank you again for sharing! Your sword polishing friend is very kind/generous to share his shitaji methods. It is my understanding, that in Japanese culture, these methods are closely guarded by the masters/practitioners and not readily shared outside the circle. Is this true.
Thank you Virtuovice . Excellent video. One question please. Your waterstone flattening plate. What type is it? Thank you and kind regards from Australia.
Hello Dr. First time I comment in your channel with a question. I´m watching your videos long time ago, even I have all the video collection in my computer. And always have a question in my mind, because I´m a study Japanese sword style: ¿Did you train Katana or any tactic / self defense style in your life?.. I know your channel is about hunting and bushcraft, but I remember your video talking about home defense with a Ka-Bar Knife. I love that video. I watch your channel because I´m a marcial art trainer and learn about sharpening is a basic for me, but also because I´m an bushcraft lover. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Regards from Argentine.
+zeroa6 I have many self defense knives all over my house. At any place in my house I can reach my fighting knife in a few steps. Japanese intruders almost always carry a kitchen knife. So my knives are expected to win. But unfortunately we are banned to own a long Japanese sword because it is too dangerous. Our law restricts the sword length up to 15cm to own. Thanks.
+virtuovice I´m sorry that one of the best knives and swords cultures can´t have a sword at home. I would be charmed to know your tactical knife colecction. I appreciated your comments very much. Thanks.
Dear Virtuovice, thanks again for another great lesson. My question to you, what do you use to flatten your waterstone? I noticed what you did but I do not know what that checkered stone is. Many thanks for your feedback, kind regards from Sao Paulo, Brazil
Great video, thank you! Also, have your recommended sharpening stone line-up changed since your last video on the subject? I really want to buy some good Japanese water stones. The diamond stones I have produces an edge that leaves a bit to be desired.
+Andris Kompelien If you need a full line up from light geometry change to finish, Naniwa Chosera 400, Shapton Ha-no-kuromaku 1000, 2000, Naniwa Chosera 3000 are the ones. Naniwa seems like having launched a new Professional line which is almost the same as Chosera line. Thanks.
virtuovice Thank you for the advice, I really appreciate it! :-) By the way, I saw a video yesterday of a channel called Dutch Bushcraft Knives, and he compared the Naniwa Chosera 400 with the new Professional 400. They seemed pretty similar, but I don't think you get a plastic base with the new ones..
+Andris Kompelien The new Professional line is not available in Japan. They are selling at some popular western dealers as a Chosera update and I think it is made only for western dealers for a little less prices. Its package design is obviously not for Japan. Thanks.
Always I watch your vids, your stones look to be very fast. I bought the same stones, a set of Choceras. But they don't seem to be that fast. What could that be? Bad stones? Fake stones? Maybe I need an extra corse diamond plate. Yeah, I'm very unexperienced. Ijust can't stand all that time to get rid of nicks. My set is made of a 400, a 1000, a 2000, a 5000 and a 10000. I didn't found the 320 grit Chosera. Actually, I think I need a power tool to grind those knifes. Thanks, great videos.
Watch some sharpening tutorials. Honing knives only work when repeatedly sharpening at the same angle without any deviation. 90% user skill and 10% rock

I was having the same issue, thank you so much for this Dr. and your japanese sword sharpener friend.

Wow. Great video. Ryky Tran sent me here. Looking forward to checking out your videos in the weeks and months to come. Thankyou for making them.
Need this. Thanks Dr. Have a GPS with a huge belly and a scandi grind so always makes it more tricky to sharpen.
That definitely makes sense! Thank you for the sharpening tip!

Recently discover the Higonokami knives. What is the use for this tipe of knives? Razor?.
+zeroa6 When I was a kid, many primary school children had Higonokami in their stationary case to sharpen pencils.

I use SK-11 #150/#600 diamond plate to flatten my stones every after use. Thanks.
Many thanks for your kind response!!!
Love watching your videos!
Do you ever sell any of your knives?
Is there anywhere else I can follow you?
Thank you for your time.

Wish you were in the UK so I could send this new puukko in m390 to you I can't get a hair shaving edge on it no matter how long I try lol
05:40 Do you have a pet bird or something? There was something in the background making this god awful noise... R.I.P Headphone users..
Great video! But I think you meant "hone" in the title my friend?
+PainSorrowFury Thank you for correcting.
+virtuovice Always a pleasure :) All my sharpening skills I have from you, master :)
I'm in the process of reprofiling a katana with a full height convex. Will this method work for making a geometric yokote as it is flat also.
Where can I buy the 18-8 stainless steel waterstone holder shown in the video please? (the one that's holding the #150 / 600 diamond plate)

hi virtuovice.my fallkniven s1 did not come sharp and han small knicks on the edge.can i sharpen the convex on the waterstones?or will it be a secondery bevel??
All Fallknivens have a secondary micro bevel and fat geometry near the edge line. So they are all difficult to put the keenest edge on.
Why don't you just buy knives with the geometry that you like?
+kev Because they are obviously hard to find. + As he already said, BRKT fit best for his purposes.
+MrWeedpeet, lol, basicaly not even BRKT fit his purpose. He reshapes every single knife. Its just a hobby not a real need.
Why don't you make your own knives?
Very good tutorial my friend
