  • It is inevitable for you to do this in either way when you have a Bark River knife to carry in the field. Unless you do it, your dull edge will tire you out.

    Amazing how we are able to see the difference between the water stone and sand paper finish. Great video as usual, I am glad I subscribed to your channel.

    I'm not sure with Bark River but the reason many knife makers micro bevel is because it allows them to put a sharp edge on the knife without marring the finish of the blade. This way the customer will see a nice finish and feel a sharp edge on their new knife.

    Waco, thank you very much! I was actually going to ask you if you would create this video. I have purchased two BR knives, a Bravo1 3V and Gunny Hunter. I just removed the micro-bevel off the Gunny and wow is it sharp! I used superstones 400, 1000 and 3000 with about 20 min stropping. Again, thank you!!

    Wako,
    Have you spoken with Bark River about their sharpening practices? They need feedback; otherwise, they will continue to produce microbevels on their knives. I agree that microbevels are bad if you want to strop to maintain the edge. I am not good at sharpening, so I expect the edge to be right from the factory. It's been hit or miss for me.

    When you spend several hundred dollars on a knife, there should be no micro-bevel. That would piss me off.

    Great video, as usual. Always enjoy your work and insights.
    Do you think a hard flat surface like a pane of glass would have improved the performance of the sandpaper?

    • @virtuovice
      @virtuovice  Před 10 lety

      If the sandpaper is very stable on something very hard, I think it will work like a water stone. I use two hands for water stones, and I think it helps a lot to control the honing angle. Thanks.

    Your knowledge about knives are very practical but at the same time encyclopedic.
    We are your knife people :)
    On the other hand, which microscope do you use?
    Thanks a lot.

      This is what I use. It serves me perfectly but the Mini Fieldmicroscope without illumination should work for you almost the same. Thanks.

    Is Bark River putting different microbevels on either side on purpose, or is this just a manufacturing side effect?

    Can you also use a diamond plate to remove the micro bevel or is the water stone a must have? I have S35VN stainless steel by the way.

    I've just bought a puukko in m390 with a rhombic flat grind and micro beval i've never owned a knife with a micro beval and it seemed dull when it arrived so i tried to hone it on the strop with paste have i done wrong and what should my next procedure be?i have a set of king water stones but don't know what angle to work at.

    • @virtuovice
      @virtuovice  Před 8 lety +2

      +Randal Flagg With King stones resharpening from a high line would be very tough. So your honing angle should be better between the main bevel angle and the micro bevel angle to shallow down the micro bevel. Thanks.
