  • A playthrough of Tecmo's 1991 football game for the NES, Tecmo Super Bowl.
This video shows an entire season, playoffs, and the Super Bowl played as the San Francisco 49ers.
And in a lucky coincidence since today just happens to be Super Bowl LIV, at 5:18:48 I face the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl.
Tecmo Super Bowl is one of those rare games that was not only a massive success when it was released, but one that has continued to gain in popularity over the years since. What makes TSB even more unusual, though, it is part of a genre where games tend to be discarded and forgotten about within a year. How then does a lone NES football cart manage to stay relevant for nearly thirty years?
(Well, I mean besides not being related to Electronic Arts in any way.)
I'm not sure that there's a single reason for it, but TSB was a landmark game, and American nostalgia is huge on this one. It is based on the NFL's 1991 season schedule, and it was the first game to feature the licensed use of both NFL team and player names.
It's a fast-paced, arcade style game that was a blast with two players (as long as you both agreed that the Raiders were off-limits - Bo Jackson, damn!), and it introduced all sorts of things to the original Tecmo Bowl formula that gave it just enough depth to keep in interesting without overcomplicating it. Now included are things like the coin toss, fumbles, injuries, the tracking of individual player stats across games, player substitutions, and you can't forget those cutscenes, which have been amped up considerably since the original Tecmo Bowl!
Tecmo's cutscenes were always awesome - whether you were playing Ninja Gaiden, Bad News Baseball, or Tecmo Super Bowl, those colorful cartoon scenes were always good for stirring up some hype.
But the graphics overall were pretty amazing for the NES. Two full teams appear on the field at once without any slowdown, and the animation was pretty good for little stick-men characters. Why is everything so pink though?
And who could ever forget those voice samples? "Ready....Down... HUT, HUT, HUT, HUT!" Or if you were playing as Bo Jackson, you'd be hearing "TOUCHDOWN!" every ten seconds as you pulled off an 80+ point lead against the AI or a younger sibling.
Seriously, Bo Jackson made the game unreasonably fun. I mean, I get Jerry Rice to do a couple of fun zags on the field here, but Bo could run literal circles around a whole team. Just ask Peter Griffin.
But overall, Tecmo Super Bowl is a ridiculously great time, and I don't even like football.
One last side note: did you know that hardcore fans still regularly update the game each year? It's mindblowing to think that people love TSB enough that you can actually go and buy a physical "Tecmo Super Bowl 2020" NES cartridge. That's some crazy dedication right there.

Literally the greatest videogame ever made. This game was SHOCKINGLY ADVANCED upon its release!! The jump from any football game to this would be comparable to Madden 20 coming out and next year you actually were on the field in your living room. Ive spent more time playing this game than any other activity in my life other than reading or sleeping. IT KEPT SEASON STATS!! 1st game to do that. How good you were at S-Tecmo defined your social status from 9-16 yrs old in my hometown....Great memories of playing friends that have since died far too young ...for that Im so grateful... now at 41 years old. What a game and time to be young.

I am also a huge Tecmo Bowl series fan. While Tecmo Bowl (on the NES) is good, Tecmo Super Bowl (on the NES) is even better. (I felt that the Arcade Version of Tecmo Bowl is not that great - I mean, IT'S FINE, but I did not care about the Arcade Version of Tecmo Bowl that much - the developers had to start somewhere, though). Now, I am not a fan of sports games AT ALL - I could care less about the majority of sports games, to be honest (on any console or portable) - but Tecmo Super Bowl is one of the few games (especially on the NES) that I truly play over and over again and that I legitimately care about (because of it's super-high replay value, great music, great graphics and great gameplay).
Think about it: 28 teams (in 1991) that you can take to the Super Bowl? Yes, that raises Tecmo Super Bowl's replay value to the max. I will admit that Tecmo Bowl also has pretty high replay value (although the fact that you have to get a perfect season in the prequel (NES Tecmo Bowl) of Tecmo Super Bowl means that it might slightly dampen the replay value on NES Tecmo Bowl). Yes, there are passwords in the NES version of Tecmo Bowl, but Tecmo Bowl was not that great (it was still pretty good, though). Plus, there were only 4 plays in the NES version of Tecmo Bowl (and some teams have 3 passing plays and only 1 run play and vice versa). Also, Tecmo Bowl lacked a playbook.
Tecmo Super Bowl (NES) improves on that by having 8 plays, having the ability to save via battery backup, an adjustable playbook and you can actually have a loss (or 2) and still be able to go to the playoffs and the super bowl (in Tecmo Super Bowl). That opens up a LOT of strategy (in this strategy-based football game) to use. The passing and running (and the controls) are super-easy to learn, too (which is critical to making an awesome sports game - or any game, for that matter). The A.I. may be tough (especially during the playoffs and the Super Bowl), but it is not impossible to defeat it (if you think intelligently).
I do not believe that any 8-bit American Football game can compare to Tecmo Super Bowl.
Sure, Joe Montant Football (on the Sega Master System) IS a respectable 8-bit American Football game (and it probably is the best American Football game on the Sega Master System and I do like Joe Montana Football on the Sega Master System) but even that game cannot compare to Tecmo Super Bowl. Other NES American Football games range from good to horrible (I am looking at you Atlus - for creating that piece of junk that is NFL Football). I will say that Tecmo Super Bowl is not my favorite in the Tecmo Bowl series (do not get me wrong, Tecmo Super Bowl is great), but it is still 100% fun.
Then there are the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo versions (of Tecmo Super Bowl). Those are equally as fun as their NES counterpart. Those 2 versions (the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo versions of Tecmo Super Bowl, that is) have even MORE replay value (because of the 3 YEARS MODE and three seasons on top of that that you can choose from). Plus, the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo versions of Tecmo Super Bowl also have a 9th play - the "desperate" play (as l like to call it). There is one thing I do not like about the Sega Genesis version of Tecmo Super Bowl: the music constantly changes at random. Do not get wrong, that music in that version is great, but it constantly changes at random and I hate it. For example, in one play, you will hear the preseason music and in another play you will hear the season music in the Sega Genesis music of Tecmo Super Bowl - it drives me up the wall sometimes. The Super Nintendo version of Tecmo Super Bowl had assigned music to the playoffs, super bowl, season, preseason and pro bowl (like the NES version), unlike the Sega Genesis version of Tecmo Super Bowl, so that's probably why I prefer the Super Nintendo version of Tecmo Super Bowl. Also, the version that you prefer will probably depend on taste.
Then there are it's sequels - Tecmo Super Bowl II: The Special Edition and Tecmo Super Bowl 3: The Final Edition (both of them are for the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo). Now, I never played Tecmo Super Bowl II: The Special Edition but I have played Tecmo Super Bowl 3: The Final Edition (well, the SNES version, that is). Tecmo Super Bowl 3: The Final Edition is my favorite (out of the Tecmo Bowl series and probably my favorite 16-bit American Football game). You get - not one - but TWO playbooks (with 8 plays each)! That's a total of 16 plays! Yes, you still have the customizable playbook, but you also get 30 teams (as of 1995, that is - in Tecmo Super Bowl 3: The Final Edition). As if that's not enough, you also get a customizable stat/character screen. I loved making football characters with the names of M. Dew, B. Bunny and stuff like that - in Tecmo Super Bowl 3: The Final Edition. That raises the replay value even further (in that game). Also, Tecmo Super Bowl 3: The Final Edition has the highest replay value (out of the Tecmo Bowl games in the Tecmo Bowl series). Again, the version that you prefer will depend on taste (although the Sega Genesis version of Tecmo Super Bowl 3: The Final Edition is more rare (in value) than it's SNES counterpart). I do have to say one thing, though: WHERE is the music during the plays (of Tecmo Super Bowl 3: The Final Edition)? I mean, the music is great in the other parts of the game, but Tecmo did not put music in the main part of the game (the plays) of that game. I suppose Tecmo was making it more realistic by having no music in the main part of the game, but I find that choice kind of odd. Also, Tecmo Super Bowl 3: The Final Edition also has a side change that lasts during the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the game. That is not too hard to get used to, but it can be disorienting the first time. Still, I like Tecmo Super Bowl 3: The Final Edition so much that those 2 things (the lack of music in the main part of the game and the side change during the 2nd and 3rd quarter) that I said above can be either ignored or you can get used to it.
I will admit that all of the Tecmo Bowl games in the Tecmo Bowl series are legendary (which is especially true for the NES version of Tecmo Super Bowl). I never played Tecmo Super Bowl 2: The Special Edition but it is so similar that you can just jump straight to Tecmo Super Bowl 3: The Final Edition (like I did). The hacks for the NES version of Tecmo Super Bowl are numerous - I would not even know how many hacks of the NES version of Tecmo Super Bowl there are, but it is a lot (that's how you know that it's super popular among the people). Geez, I just typed 7 paragraphs of this. I must really like the Tecmo Bowl series if I can type the equivalent of an ESSAY about the Tecmo Bowl series. To be honest, I probably should play the Sega Genesis version of Tecmo Super Bowl 3: The Final Edition and both versions (Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo) of Tecmo Super Bowl 2: The Special Edition.

Their condition numbers changed every quarter I think, but often you can reset the game and then check your players' conditions to see if they went in your favor, and if they didn't I would reset and try again until it did.
Played the crap out of this game back when it was relevant. And.. TOTALLY cheated. Not just with the condition hacking.. but I would change the opponent's runs and passes to all similar plays before each season game so I could immediately tackle them literally any time. Scored 99-0 every game!

I'm not a big sports gamer, but I played the MESS out of this game when I was younger. Enough that I actually finished the game with every single team in the game over the course of several years. Yes, even the (then) lowly Patriots and Colts. While they weren't objectively the best team in the game, the Chiefs were my favorite. Derrick Thomas on defense, and "The Nigerian Nightmare" Christian Okoye popcorning dudes. Good times.

Game is literally the best sports game of all time. Me and my uncle would still play this today. Have some beers and try and take our Raiders all the way. Or we would take the low ranked teams and try and make it. Like NE or IND or TB.

Bro I play this on my emulator😃
I got the 49ers 16-0 and I swear on my life the raiders beat the bills in the AFC championship and made the Superbowl. And so now it was The 49ers vs The Raiders of course I won 49-13 I still have my saved files from when I won and the game itself so I can replay.. True Story
