Astyanax (NES) Playthrough
A playthrough of Jaleco's 1990 NES platforming action game, Astyanax.
Alright, first thing up is the age old question: how do you pronounce "Astyanax"?
\ ə-ˈstī-ə-ˌnaks \ "Uh-stai-uh-naks"
Betcha feel smarter already, huh?
Astyanax was released at the same time as Jaleco's arcade title, The Astyanax. They aren't the same game, but are instead two games based on the same general style of play. This also happens to be the same style and play as you'll find in The Legendary Axe 1 and 2 on the TurboGrafx-16. They all share the muscled meathead swinging huge weapons at things, and they all share the charging gauge that dictates the power of each hit. The NES and TG16 games differ the most from the arcade game in their pacing - the console titles all tend to be slower and more deliberately paced than the quarter muncher was.
Though they're not all technically related to one another, they were all developed by the same team at Aicom within a year or two of each other. It's apparent that Aicom found a system they liked and stuck with it for awhile. I'm also guessing that Astyanax was a test-bed for some of storytelling ideas that we later saw again in Vice: Project Doom, another Aicom title.
Astyanax on the NES is a standard platforming game with upgradable weapons, special attacks, life bars - if you've played an NES game released between 1988-1993, you know all the basics already. It plays competently despite its questionable hit-boxes and super-stiff animation - the charge bar forces you consider what you're doing (button mashing will get you killed quickly!), and the magic spells do a nice job at helping you side-step any ugly surprises - nobody likes being bounced backwards into a pit, right?
The difficulty level is nicely balanced. It's not so easy that you'll just race through, but it's never particularly frustrating or difficult. It's a good game to throw in and chill with if you don't want to be swearing at the NES within five minutes.
The biggie that really differentiates this one from the arcade game is the cinematic plot scenes that show up constantly. Sure, they look like low-rent pretenders when put up against Ninja Gaiden, but there's a lot of charm to be found in the stilted dialogue, neon colors, and poorly drawn portraits. I still get a kick out of them.
Astyanax isn't a top 10 title, but the nostalgia can be strong with this one. It's very good at putting a smile on your face as it reminds you of times long past.

Cool World (NES) Playthrough

A playthrough of Ocean's 1993 license-based action game for the NES, Cool World. Cool World for the NES was one of the many games produced by Ocean to be based on the 1992 movie starring Brad Pitt and Kim Basinger. The movie was a box office flop that got crucified by critics, and the NES game didn't exactly set the world on fire when it finally released a year later. The SNES version (czcams.c...

A playthrough of Namco's 1993 maze-action game for the NES, Ms. Pac-Man. In this video, I played until I hit a game over on the twenty-fourth round. Like Pac-Man (czcams.com/video/3ugzN9sP-Tc/video.html), Ms. Pac-Man saw multiple releases on the NES. Ms. Pac-Man for the NES comes in two distinct flavors. A playthrough of Sofel's 1991 action game for the NES, KlashBall. In this video, I play through both game modes as Team Draco. Knockout mode begins at 1:34, and League mode begins at 1:16:16. In the late 80s, futuristic sports games - more specifically, games that appear to have been influenced by the movie Rollerball staring James Caan - were all the rage on 16-bit computers, and the genre's s...
Snatcher (Sega CD) Playthrough

A playthrough of Konami's 1995 graphic adventure game for the Sega CD, Snatcher. I drooled over the reviews in gaming magazines when Snatcher first came out, and finally had the chance to play it for the first time sometime in the late 90s. I've loved it ever since. The atmosphere, the awesome art, the soundtrack, the story - Snatcher raised the bar in many ways with this remake of the original...

Color a Dinosaur (NES) Playthrough
zhlédnutí 3,3KPřed 14 dny
A playthrough of Virgin's 1993 NES game, Color a Dinosaur. Color a Dinosaur's box loudly makes the claim that "this kind of fun won't go extinct!" As disheartening as it is to admit, that's not entirely untrue. It's a grossly misleading statement, but it stands to reason that something that never actually existed - in this case, the capacity to provide "fun" - can not cease to exist. It's not a...

Black Manta is a living embodiment of "speak softly and carry a big stick". Dude has a infinite supply of shuriken, can turn invisible and summon meteor showers at will, but when interrogating thugs the worst he thinks to threaten them is the police commissioner. He's a big softie, really, but one who can fuck your shit up. It's an interesting game, certainly. It's not flawless by any measure, but significantly better than the unlicensed Shinobi for the NES. Kinda wish there was a remake/spiritual successor that could flesh out the interrogations and secrets more and have a bit more Ninjutsu.
As always great video, I used it to complete the game, much appreciated. Question, does anyone know where the Star protection is as that is the only item I missed and I don't recall seeing it in the video. Much thanks!
This and Karnov!
How do you save this game? and how do you transfer files?
😭😭😭
What was the algorithm thinking, I had forgotten this game, suddenly it reappeared, what a wonderful time that will never happen again
just beat it orig. game❤
Are all the BGM instrument samples from a Roland SoundCanvas? Edit: As far as I can tell, yes, and they're being slammed through a four-channel MOD player in software. Pretty cool.
Miss you 3 ninjas
Great Run!
Hagar don't believe in leg days.
11:41, those shaped blocks. No, it is that “symbol”!
Plot Twist: His brother Igul didn’t want Alex to find their dad as he will have to step aside if daddy was still alive. Family politics.
Watched a guy play this earlier, apparently they couldn't get the rights to use well known Spider man villains as I researched them later and never heard of any of these characters
Is thsre anyway i could download the footage for my Retrospective with credits please
All items in this game can be kicked until they are broken
0:18 Mario on the left.
Good music taste i guess but in all seriousness no bro just no
A solid commitment is an understatement 😊
No way! It has a name? It's not just called the "cool metal-ish thud sound from TMNT and Sunset Riders?"

They're all in their early 20s and they are all EX cops!

I put so many quarters into this game; it was probably cheaper buying the NES game version of this than how much i spent playing it at arcades.
The graphics on this game were truly amazing at the time and i wish there had been a way to bring these to home consoles and have them look just like the arcades.
LO LOGRAMOS
childhood nostalgia 🤧 love how he spun at the finish line at 1:20:54
I don't like how Kojima's storytelling drags on but this is still one of my favorites.
"Hi, I would like to do the music and sound effects for this game. I have 6 sounds. Not all at once please."
I'm glad Harn didn't lose his head
3-Way 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hitting bosses has a glitch. The flashing animation is 3 pictures.. the normal boss image, a completely white out image, and a black image of the boss not being on screen. They flash quickly to give the illusion you see. The glitch is to throw a grenade at the boss and pause the game on the white out image of the boss. Then, wait some seconds. The game repeatedly hits the boss while paused, and it's dead when you unpause.
1 hour for a platformer? That's awesome.
Damn, I forgot I played this until a song solidified a memory in me.
I feel sorry people who paid full retail price for this garbage i would of been so pissed and return it. Batman Returns on SNES is a billion times better its actually a good game too
This is and forever will be the best TMNT game of all time. Top 2 beat em up game ever!! Only thing close to Turtles in time is Street of Rage, Golden Axe, Double dragon or Final Fight, TMNT 2 nes
This looks like the best Simpsons game on a console from the 8bit/16bit era

Sorry the cartoon in the movie was way hotter than Kim bassinger
Bitmap Brothers sounds like a Super Mario clone
0:07 - Konami??? That means Target Terror is actually the game that started it all... *LETHAL ENFORCERS!* (POW!)
Its like Doom but its golf
I never made it past 28:43 as a kid. I tried to get my cousin's daughters to play it with me but ever since I got them into the Super Nintendo they've been stuck on Donkey Kong for like seven years 🗿
This was my 2nd nintendo game I got. I've never beat it. I tried. Ghosts and Goblins taught me that in life, sometimes, you just have to let it go.
Just so you know- in the Garm tower where you get the Silver shield back, all you have to do is go down to the bottom left corner, hold down, and the enemies will all come to you, making it an easy grind for levels. The enemies spawn constantly, so you its recommended to grind for levels here, since the second game doesn't have a lot of grind spots.
19:00 hice el mismo grito cuando mi madre me golpeo con un zapato 😂 auch!!
I literally remember this having better graphics, and a stage intro with a building that has "go for broke" graffiti written on it. The game over music was slightly different. Possibly a different game? Or a bootleg?
I've always wondered why the Brood were randomly thrown into this game....didn't seem consistent with the overall story but great game nonetheless.
K! D! Konkey Dong!
Awesome!!
