- A playthrough of Konami's 1995 graphic adventure game for the Sega CD, Snatcher.
I drooled over the reviews in gaming magazines when Snatcher first came out, and finally had the chance to play it for the first time sometime in the late 90s. I've loved it ever since.
The atmosphere, the awesome art, the soundtrack, the story - Snatcher raised the bar in many ways with this remake of the original 1988 Japanese PC classic. The CD versions are also the only way to play the third act. The original PC88 and MSX2 games ended on a cliffhanger, so until the PC Engine version came out in 1992, the only way you could've experienced the full story would've been by playing its 1990 JRPG remake on the MSX2, SD Snatcher (linked below).
There are so many classic moments in this game, but I'll leave you to discover them for yourself. If you've not played it before, strap yourself in. It's one helluva ride.
If you are familiar with Hideo Kojima's work, you'll immediately recognize several of his hallmarks, including the obsessive level of attention paid to world building, the long-winded cutscenes (MGS4 was not his first game to make you sit through a half-hour long conversation!), and the steady flow of 80s pop culture references. He was clearly more interested in making a movie than he in making a game, but thankfully, it turned out to be a good movie.
I still find it hilarious that Night Trap got slapped with a Mature rating but Snatcher was rated Teen.
The video is over seven hours long because I didn't want to rush through it by picking solely the required options. The writing is great, and I included a lot of the missable dialogue because it adds nicely to the game's atmosphere and the flavor of the characters' personality. I also made sure to include the optional scenes, like Neo Kobe Pizza, the ramen stand, the fortune teller, and Jordan's data banks. (If you want to skip the Jordan stuff - there's a ton of info to sift through - it's shown from 51:55 to 1:24:41.)

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocomplete.com/) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games! - Hry
The plot twists in this game are pretty memorable. The presentation of Hideo Kojima's games have always been pretty top-notch, with a lot of attention-to-detail depth about concepts in his fictional worlds, it's been pretty inspiring that games like these exist.
One of video gaming’s absolute masterpieces in storytelling. This game deserves and should have a remake so a new generation can experience how amazing it is. This is 90’s gaming at its best.
One of the best terminator, blade runner, and cyberpunk inspired games that I have ever seen! The game deserves another beautiful remake!!! Great characters, great
story, great music, great voice acting, and great gameplay from start to finish! This game is a landmark! 🎉
That intro is still aces, even now. Always will be.
I love Kojima's slow burn storytelling and out of nowhere twists. THIS is how you do a thriller story in video games!
This game is an ABSOLUTE classic; the music, dialogue, and action just hit so completely right it's almost scary. It's definitely one of the greatest games of all time, along with Final Fantasy 6, Red Dead Redemption 2, Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2, and Secret of Mana
"Die, Junker!"
Snatcher is so bad ass, isn't it?
They say the Mega CD version is the best
@@JoaoDisYeah, this and the PC Engine versions are great.
@@NintendoComplete didn't the PCE version have extra content?
@@thecunninlynguist It had the third act added like this one did.
That exaltation to cyberpunks in the intro really comes across dated considering how actual real life people with those skills usually choose to use them.
That soundtrack is so solid
One of my go-to Christmas games.
The soundtrack itself is epic!
Hideo kojima’s legend works 🎉
Oh, that soundtrack.
I yearned to play this when I first read about it in a video game magazine(maybe Gamepro). Unfortunately I did not have a Sega Cd and did not know anyone that had one.
I finally got to play in on an emulator in 2006 and loved it. Crazy that has been 18 years ago. The first release of the game was 18 when I first played it back then.
Ohhhh.... hell yeah. I've been waiting for this for sooo long. Many thanks to you bro for uploading this.
"Nowadays games are just interactive movies" 👀👀👀
Intricate Slot Machines with banking system stories
The thumbnail is wild AF
The OG Cyberpunk game and BladeRunner/Terminator like game!
I love this game! I fell in love with it back in 2019/2020
"You ever retire a human by mistake." Rachel, Blade Runner.
The *_original_* Cyberpunk.
I'm guessing fighting the cyberpyschos made you think of Snatcher
I guess you haven't noticed the fact that "Gillian", "Jordan" and "Cunningham" all appear in Cyberpunk, besides kojima's cameo... except Gillian is with a E in it.
@@domasbaliulis23 Cunningham I got...but who's Gillian and Jordan
@@Shinigami88X1 the n54 news anchor, you know, the one that appears in person in japantown, and later, at the spaceport.
@@Shinigami88X1 oh yeah, gillian's VA voices technicians and scientists in red faction, the former being memorable with quotes such as "up, down, up, down, i HATE ladders..." "there's nothing for you here, please leave."
SEGA CD was the premium experience back in the day. It was also my first CD player.
Sega Cd had a few good games. Sonic CD, Sol-Feace, and this
Thank you for posting this. First time seeing it. I really enjoyed the story they were telling up until the last 45 minutes, where it felt like they were running out of disc space so they crammed another 3 hours of story into that time. Other than that, it was really well paced and fun.
Would love to see a remake or remaster of this game. My god it's amazing.
Poor guy got ghosted by some many ladies in this game. Worst part, he didn't even get to eat his neo kobe pizza!
*_It sank just like the rest of this city's gonna!_*
Check your droolers at the door, that's as much skin as you'll see in this game.
I was oddly sold on the crazy Snatcher world domination plan from 'atavistic' on. Phenomenal writing/translation!
This game was incredible. I still have my original copy.
Classic game.
This version of Snatcher shows that voice acting in video games could be great and didn't always "have" to sound terrible.
I have snatcher on mini PlayStation classic in Japanese couldn't find the English version. Now finally I can figure the controls now by watching the video help me thru the game
i use the intro of this game as the intro song to my live stream. fuckin' love this game.
Love the storyline of this game, definitely was worth a second and third play. Should have done better in sales.
Snatcher is a cyberpunk graphic adventure game developed and published by Konami. It was written and designed by Hideo Kojima and first released in 1988 for the PC-8801 and MSX2 in Japan. Snatcher is set in a future East Asian metropolis where humanoid robots dubbed "Snatchers" have been discovered killing humans and replacing them in society. The game follows Gillian Seed, an amnesiac who joins an anti-Snatcher agency in search of his past. Gameplay takes place primarily through a menu-based interface through which the player can choose to examine items, search rooms, speak to characters, explore a semi-open world, and perform other actions.
Kojima wanted Snatcher to have a cinematic feel, so the setting and story are heavily influenced by science fiction films, like Blade Runner, Akira, The Terminator, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Development on the PC versions took more than twice as long as the average game of the time, even after Kojima was asked to trim more than half his initial story. The game was released to positive reviews, but poor sales. It garnered a cult following, and was remade as a role-playing game called SD Snatcher for the MSX2 in 1990. This was followed by a remake of the original adventure game using CD-ROM technology, released for the PC Engine Super CD-ROM² System in 1992.
Looking to provide a more interactive experience to gamers in the West, Konami developed a Sega CD version of Snatcher specifically for North America and Europe in 1994. Although it was a commercial failure, the Sega CD version received mostly positive reviews for its cinematic presentation and mature themes uncommon in games at the time. Snatcher has been retrospectively acclaimed as both one of the best adventure and cyberpunk games of all time, and identified as a foundation for the themes Kojima explored later in the Metal Gear series. The game was a significant inspiration on Goichi Suda, who worked with Kojima to produce a radio drama prequel, Sdatcher. Snatcher was last rereleased in 1996 on the PlayStation and Sega Saturn. The game was also included in the PC Engine Mini in 2020, though only playable in Japanese. Its lack of availability on modern platforms has surprised industry analysts, given the game's legacy.
Holy shit this is amazing. I've never seen it
Gotta love that boilerplate fiction disclaimer at game start
2:37:26 I remember also doing this and getting thrown out, haha. The reaction was worth it, though.
I enjoy historically accurate games like Snatchers.
platos caven I forget how awesome that theme is one of the best in the game
Pretty good game.
wish we'd get a remaster of this classic
It has already had several 😅 It started out as a PC88 game.
@@NintendoCompleteThis made me laugh out loud.
@@NintendoComplete i meant now. It hasn't been re-released or remastered for modern systems..and isn't the only english release this SCD version? The closest to a modern release was the JPN PCE-mini release
@@thecunninlynguistYeah, this is the only official English version. I think there's a fan patch for the PC88 version though
A remaster would be good, but a what about a full 3D remake?
Considering how old Snatcher is, even the dub was really good in this version. I prefer good amount of cast over Japanese original dub.
definitely one of my all time favorites. i always replay it every christmas. id love a modern remaster or at LEAST a re-release. Snatcher is to Christmas games as Die Hard is to Christmas movies. no i will not elaborate
I don't like how Kojima's storytelling drags on but this is still one of my favorites.
Damn it I miss Sega Saturn I've been in the hunt trying to find one 0:18
Act 1: The Snatcher's Trail
Act 2: Hospital Cure Rumble
Act 3: A Junker's Past
How has Mika's face not become a meme?
The music is badass it sounds like something from Beverly Hills Cop
My JT&T bills are through the ceiling
Ah yes, the 'Judgement Uninfected Naked Kind & Execute Ranger' / 'Japanese Undercover Neuro-Kinetic Elimination Rangers' squad.
Gotta love Kojima! :)
this classic 👌 🙌🏾
As I've seen multiple people say before, this game should have a modern remaster, along with Policenauts. I've thought about porting it to AGI (the old Sierra game engine).
So Blade Runner mixed with The Terminator. Metal Gear was defiantly reused in MGS 4 with Otacon's drone.
Our main protagonist is a Junker 😮? I would rather take my chances out there amongst the Snatchers!
This was inspired by Blade runner
yes
didn't you play this? or am i losing my mind (or confusing this playthrough with another channel's)
I did. This is just a new one with much cleaner video quality.
Hey. Really enjoy your playthroughs and wouldn't normally make a big deal out of something like this but can you or anyone else confirm the sound in the scene from 2:59:29 among other scenes? I've watched your vid on three different devices with different sound configs and the background music is so scratchy and static-filled. Don't think its a speaker issue because voice acting is clear (As clear as this era allows obviously).
No disrespect intended but deeply off putting from my point of view. Hope its a setting or something on my side but seems unlikely given exact same outcome on three different devices (Crappy Droid Tablet, IPad 9th Gen and LG 4k Telly).
Regardless grateful for the content and actually enjoyed the JORDAN scenes as it saved me having to do it myself. Also useful for folks who want dig deeper into the lore without having to slog through the interface (charming but slow lol).
It's not just you. The bass in that spot sounds really harsh and raw. I'd guess it's something to do with the way the FM waveforms are being filtered.
*Gets to **1:18*
*_Nervious Sweats Furiously_*
I could have sworn you already had a video uploaded for this?
will you redo policenauts (on saturn), its sequel, as well please in better quality?
the saturn version i mean
KOJIMA GAMES!
Awesome game. Is there also a Japanese Animation of it? They should make one.
Good !
👍👍👍👍👍
4:11 Metal… Gear?!
Only one big problem. The game never got a rerelease and in north America except for the turbografix mini. But even so its unplayable because its in japanese.
2047 that ain't too far off
I jokingly wonder if there were some correlation between Snatcher and Resident Evil. "Biohazard" was mentioned.
"Neo Kobe," huh? I've been to their steel factory. Not a pleasant experience.
Cyberpunk before cyberpunk 2077
1:19:45 That is hilarious
Japanese Original Version = PC Engine
English Dub Version = Sega CD
Cyberpunk 1996
2:57:07
Is he gonna shoot out his teeth?
Dude just wanted to make a Snatcher sequel and Konami kept stringing him along to make increasingly awful Metal Gear sequels...
Awesome game for the time though. Even the voice acting is pretty decent!
Blade Runner is such a ripoff of this game
Blade Runner came out years before this game!
Blade runner came out in 1982, pretty sure the game is ripping off blade runner 😂
That's the joke guys.
I never cared of this one. Yeah, its basically an anime, on a game console, but the game play is so damned boring.
this game is stupid overrated
4 ad breaks in the first 17 minutes, no thanks i'll skip this one
then get an adblocker
Your loss. It gets really good at around the half-hour mark.
not the uploader's fault you can't be arsed to get an adblocker.
Didn't you already do a long playthrough of this game or did I imagine it? I remember how you made Gillian Seed into a lecherous detective and the scary glitch face during one of the video calls from late into the game.
I did, the old recording was really blurry
