Battletoads & Double Dragon (Game Boy) Playthrough

A playthrough of Tradewest's 1993 beat 'em up game for the Nintendo Game Boy, Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team.
Battletoads & Double Dragon for the Game Boy rolled out alongside its SNES and Genesis counterparts six months after the release of the original NES version ( • Battletoads & Double D... ), just in time for the 1993 Christmas season.
Following "Battletoads," a handheld-exclusive series spin-off, and "Battletoads in Ragnarok's World," a simplified adaptation of the NES game, Battletoads & Double Dragon was the third and final Battletoads title for the Game Boy.
BT&DD for the Game Boy is a straightforward remake of the NES game of the same name. Every stage, gameplay gimmick, playable character, boss fight, music track, and cutscene made the transition intact, and it all looks and sounds very similar to the original console game.
The gameplay feels quite different, though. The attack timings, jump physics, and hitboxes all feel slightly off, and your character shifts too far forward with each punch, making it difficult to reliably land combo finishers. The controls aren't bad, but they're prone to frustrating bouts of jank that you don't typically see in Battletoads games.
Battletoads & Double Dragon is a fun Game Boy beat 'em up that looks and sounds great, but it's disappointing that the gameplay doesn't hit the high bar set by the NES games.

the sprite work for this game is impressive, especially compared to rival console versions at the time. game boy was just a powerhouse at consistently producing down-scaled portable version of existing current-gen games of the era. thanks for the upload, nintendocomplete.

A lot PEOPLE disliked this 🎮 when it first came out only because they thought it was copying teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles . EVERYBODY LOVED the turtles when they came OUT. But then LATER when come together GAMERS thought that shit was dope. So kudos 😅

Just yesterday I was looking for a longplay video of Battletoads/Double Dragon for Game Boy because I wanted to hear what the GB’s version of Ropes ‘N’ Roper sounded like, and then a few hours later this was uploaded.

This is the only GB Battletoads that I actively avoid. "Battletoads in Ragnarok's World" at least had the niche of being an easier version of the first game with an actual ending theme.
This port of "Battletoads and Double Dragon" doesn't even have that, and the janked up physics and inconsistent sound conversion doesn't help matters.

Even on Game Boy, the Stage 5 Missile theme is so damn good. Not even the Genesis version could mess it up. Possibly the most epic 8-bit track.
