- I just played the most unique 3D Platformer called Penny's Big Breakaway! It was made by some of the devs who worked on Sonic Mania and their passion shows in this ambitious indie title.

It's nice to see 3D mascot platformers having a resurgence.
Seeing someone utilize an unconventional weapon like a yoyo reminds me so much of the Sly Cooper games and the family cane with home much you can use it for.
Ness from EarthBound and the Yo-Yo Cop Girl from... Yo-Yo Cop Girl.
Shovel Knight and the drill from Bioshock 2 also comes to mind. I guess, Also the wrench from Bioshock one and Half Life also count as unconventional.

This game just confirms that the most dangerous weapon in the world is the yo-yo. Just look at StarTropics and Earthbound.

This game is beautifully polished and definitely harkens back to those quirky Sega 3D games from the Saturn and Dreamcast.
Penny's Big Breakaway looks like a very smooth game to play, once you've got the hang of the controls. It certainly seems like it's trying to do its own thing, while paying homage to what's come before it, and I could definitely see myself getting lost running around collecting everything I can find on a given stage, just for the sake of doing so. It feels rare to come across a game with satisfying movement mechanics nowadays, so it's good to see this one lets you fly around however you want, once you've nailed the controls. All in all, great video Jirard. Lookin forward to the next one.

Never heard of this game. Looks interesting!
It looks pretty cool. Somehow it manages to look like a 3D version of the 16 bits Sega platformers. Actually to me this is what the 3D Sonic games should have been. Not that I don't like what it's become, but the Genesis episodes have never been solely about speed. It was about interesting mechanics and level designs. And I'm pretty sure you can add a bit of speed to what I'm seeing here. Some fans would obviously disagree but a 3D Sonic game needs to be slow imo, and not just during some sidecrolling parts.
I'm still convinced that this game started out at Sonic Mania 2. It has all of the mechanics that would have worked for a new Sonic Mania that used more of the Adventure/Heroes format.
Why would this, a 3d platformer, be a sequel to Sonic Mania, a 2D platformer?

@@lukewilliams6083 are you really asking why the team that made Mania would also create their take on 3d Sonic games? I mean if Mania was a mix of all the 2d Sonic games, it makes sense that they could make Mania 2 out of a mix of the 3d Sonic games.
@@waled7564 I dunno I've played plenty of 3d blast, but this camera movement looks like it's straight out of Sonic Heroes.
@@JPBrooksLive yes, because Mania succeeded because it was a 2D celebration of classic Sonic. To have a sequel to that be something more in common with 3D Mario than Sonic would've been a bad decision. There are already a ton of 3D Sonic games out there. If they made a sequel to the best Sonic game, it would need to stay in 2D.

Why indie platformers & RPGs mostly succeed is because they have passion put into them. Much like this game. Especially in this day & age.
Well, time to add another game to my list, it just looks really good and fun.

This is a great game but really could use an optional tutorial or practice level so you can master the moves easier. Then again I am old and I like when games don't threat me like a baby so...

I wasn't big on Sonic Mania myself since I felt like it lacked originality all around. But I have to admire them for being able to make not only a completely original game, but a 3D game at that.
the art palate reminds me of sonic.
It looks a lot like a game Treasure would make, too.
Because it's by Sonic Mania's devs. Of course they're gonna have that specific 90s-style dreamlike aesthetic to it.
This game looks like what I remember Sega megadrive games looking like, except in 3D.

You should check out the game Earth Defense Force 4.1. It's really cool and has a lot to offer for completionists
