- The original PlayStation had a ton of RPGs. Everyone remembers Final Fantasy but to me the PS1 classic; Legend of the Dragoon will always stand out with it's combat system.

A four-disc RPG epic, The Legend of Dragoon is set in a time of swords, magic, and dragons. Ten thousand years prior, the Dragon War pitted Dragoons--humans with the power to control dragons--against Enslavers, magicians who sought to enslave the humans. Now Dart, a young warrior, is on a quest to find the demon that killed his parents. The Legend of Dragoon features prerendered, 3-D backgrounds and detailed, polygonal figures. Several nonplaying characters and many full-motion video scenes take you through the complex story. The game's turn-based battle engine allows you to increase the strength of an attack through repeated button taps and shows the percentage increase you've created. A timing feature in the battle modes allows you to add devastating combinations to your attacks. The Spirit Points you accumulate during your quest can be used to unlock a special power, known as the Dragon attack.

We need a Remake or remaster please Sony!
Legend of Dragoon is so good! When I was a kid, my Dad and I would play it at night. It was a great introduction to gaming and had a great time hanging with my Dad. I have replayed it multiple times now too for the nostalgia.
I love to talk to npc before and after a major event. then come back much later to see if the dialogue changed. you learn so many things about the world.
Gawd, I remember watching my brother play this when I was a kid. It was one of my favorite games to watch him play.
I miss this game.
For those having a hard time leveling up additions. There is an accessory that automatically uses the full addition move. I don't think you get as much SP for it because you aren't actually doing the presses yourself. But it DOES count toward successful uses. So having a hard time landing the button presses? Just equip the accessory and do a few hundred fights. It'll be maxed out without much strife. The biggest downside to this is it takes your accessory slot from the character. But if you're not using a specific accessory for some big bonus to your build. Then just get the easy addition usage.
Now that I think about it. I may have used GameShark to make those uses count. Lol. Been a while since I played it on an actual PS1. Lol
My all time favorite game!!
My first rpg, the nostalgia!!
Thanks for bringing love to these game!
I thought the music was on point even if they weren't fancy.
I didn't play a square games until decades after their releases. legend of dragoon had my heart from the start.
The Legend of Dragoon is my absolute #1 FAVORITE turn based RPG ever made. To this day, I feel it is genuinely an underrated gem, and that it is ridiculous that it hasn't received some form of remaster. If there ever came a day where a remastered or full on remade version was created, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. The gameplay, story, and world live rent free in my mind, to this day, as do the countless voice clips from the party's various Additions. Legend of Dragoon is a game I'd gladly replay at any time, no matter how many times I've already beaten it, and I think modern day turn based RPG's could learn a lesson or two from it, even now. Thank you for making an episode on this game, Jirard, this was truly a gift I wasn't expecting to receive, out of the blue, even though I know it obviously wasn't made for me. Can't wait for whatever you have coming up next my guy.
This game introduced me to the world of old school RPGs. I found it in a bargain bin at Walmart for $10. I had a ps2 at this point but thank God for backwards compatibility.
I made it to the second last boss and my disc had a scratch the led to the fight freezing every time. Years later it was released on the PS3 Playstation store and I finally completed it nearly a decade later.
Needless to say, it holds a near and dear place in my heart and I'm happy to see it get any coverage.
coverage from this guy though???
I rented it back in the day. Never got to far and never touched it again. Always wanted to go back to it.
I really liked that this one is one of those that’s actually relaxing to complete…sometimes you gotta have something that’s not stress inducing
I actually used my dragoon forms mostly in regular battles, namely the heal or buff spells. I find that in many battles dragoon forms are a hindrance instead of a advantage. I usually just spam the attack items that clog my inventory.
Yes!! Finally!!
We need a remake of this game so bad
Arguably my favorite game of all time. Deffinitly the one I've beaten the most. Don't think I've ever to this day legitimately fought Faust though...
This needs a god damned remake/remaster so damn bad !!!!
Even an acknowledgment, or spin off side story with be nice.
@@coreymyers5321 yeah!
Even just a Physical Port would be nice.
Just a remaster is great enough
At least a port.
Breath of Fire III is the pinnacle for me and I feel like is entirely too slept on
Love this game, and regretted selling it to gamestop. At the time I was frustrated since I just couldn't beat what I think was the final boss. And a new Final Fantasy game had just come out that I wanted. Still, amazing game that I don't regret buying on the PSN for Vita/PS3.
Do you remember the name of the boss in question?
@@ryanraju6774 Loyd (think that's how it's spelled). I was on the final disk, and was pretty sure he was the final boss. It was just... really hard, and after a while PS2 games began to dominate my play time.
Did this series ever get touched again? Either through ports or remakes
I think it got ported on PS3 and Vita.
I think the last time anything was done was when they released it on PS3 through PS1 Classics
It is available to buy digitally on PS5 as well now.
IT's on ps3, 4, and 5. There's also an unofficial PC port called Severed Chains that unlocks things like 4k60fps gameplay and full mouse support in menus.
Loved this game!
I've been askin this for so many years and glad a big youtuber is covering it. I want a remaster.
Big is right

I absolutely love this game! I have never 100% completed it though. The battle system was a lot of fun, and the world, and areas felt so good. I can't remember a single area in the game that made me groan "not looking forwards to this part" I enjoyed all of it.
I've seen Legend of the Dragoon on so many top 10 rpg lists. Glad to see it still being talkied about and experienced.
This is one of those games that are 20+ years on my backlog
Leave it there and wait for a remaster. It's rough. But it is a cool game
There is a Mod called Severed Chains for this game, it add helpful things like being able to save the game anywhere. You should look it up and play it on pc
same
@@cam9144 Sadly, don't think we'll ever get one.
still worth playing today if you're ok with old graphics. The story and gameplay are phenomenal. in my top 5 games for the console ever.
This was awesome and legend of legaia is also a memorable favorite of mine as well. It would awesome if you covered legaia
I loved Legaia! Great game, and unique battle system.
Very innovative for the time it came out. Took me two playthroughs but i had found just about everything the second run
Agreed
Just got this game today...as good as it can get
Legaia was great too. The PS1 was truly the best RPG console ever
XENOGEARS!!!!!
Eh. Ps2 is right up there as well, so it's close.
i need to replay that one
This is still by far my favorite RPG released on the PS1. The story, characters, combat system, I just loved everything about it.
Have you played any of the other ones?
Finally! I asked for this episode YEARS ago! I love that I finally get to see it.
Glad to see this get some sort of recognition
You know, the story is pretty similar to how a TTRPG campaign progresses. Each characters have backstory to be explored, there's death of a PC and a new character sheet with the same class albeit different stats, while everything happened within overarching plot. But the chance is pretty low and I don't think that's what happened at all. It's a fun thought tho
Love me Legend of Dragoon, but I have to say I think Xenogears and Legend of Legaia are a bit better imo. I'd actually say the best PS1 RPGs are FFTactics and Xenogears tied for 1, followed by Legend of Legaia and Legend of Dragoon. Then we get into games like FF9, 7 and so on.
Does this game have some sort of modern-ish rerelease? Or do i just not remember some ps1 games looking like this? The footage definitely looks like it is running on an emulator at 3x resolution or something, the characters are way too sharp.
They released it on the PS4/PS5 with a slight graphics upgrade and trophies
Yeah, looks like the PSN release since 'rewind' pops up briefly around the 11:!5 mark, so it has a slight graphical upgrade.
Never owned a PS1 and was never really exposed to this game before, I'd heard about it but never saw anyone play it or anything. Honestly a bit surprised how similar it is to FF7 in graphics, the prerendered backgrounds with blocky polygon people looks very similar (plus the UI elements).
I find myself slapping this into my Ps3 more often than FF7
Oh hell yes. This was my first jrpg ever and I loved it so much. I was really bad at the timed button presses but I still made it pretty far
Great game. I would recommend actually not grinding out your additions until late game unless you feel you've stonewalled.
I kind of wish Additions were more like Xenogear's Deathblows, which you could access at any time in combat. But like Deathblows, there was also not a lot of reason to use previous Additions unless you found you couldn't do a later one as reliably.
OMG YES! I love when people do videos on this game! This was my first RPG accidentally. I rented this game not knowing what it was and omg I got hooked!
Fave game, too, date. Did NOT expect to see this here today. Well played, sir.
Such a great game
it's my favorite RPG on the PS1 but I didn't get a chance to play legend of legaia (other then the fun demo) or parasite eve so maybe my opinion would change after
there is still an interesting RPG point and click hybrid that I have to finish sometime called Septerra Core on the PC fun premise and interesting story but the gameplay felt lacking after a while the card magic system was brilliant though with fusing cards to get different effects
This was one of my all time favorite rpgs back in the day.
Best day of my life, thx!!
A true legend of RPG history. This game was and is absolutely beautiful.
Only single problem I had was with that desert at the beginning of the last disc.
I finally beat LotD a few years back, it was fine but, I have to say the best non-FF RPG on PS1 would be Koudelka.
Koudelka also has ties to Shadow Hearts.
@@Spootington love some Shadow Hearts 1&2. 3 not so much.
Right beside Xenogears this game is one of my favourites from PS1. Looking forward to the Suikoden release too!
4 words : "GUST OF WIND DANCE"
Correction: Ddance
@@kootsda only for Albert, Lavitz says it without the double D
Albert is overall weaker than Lavitz. A poor replacement for a true knight and loyal friend.
My favorite game on the original PlayStation. This game needs a remake. Such an amazing story.
Literally my fav RPG of all time. Every year I ask for a remake of this classic
Now we know why there is not one yet. You need to ask every day :P
I love going back and playing games I missed out on back in the day. This is one of the ones I really look forward to playing.
I'm so glad I bought it on the PS3 before the store was shut down
Currently playing this Game now on emulator a remake would be GREAT! Love this game
Have you played the re-translation patch? It makes the story flow so much better at certain points!
@@Valkier_Kato i have to see which version i downloaded i just got a android phone for free (Pixel Fold) so i been trying out to see how different games work well with it.. deff have to find that version of the game tho if i dont have it thanks ! 🙏
Goated game
It is a favorite of mine. Need to start a fresh playthroughs.
One of my fave games. The PS1 is truly the best consoles for RPGs
Legitimately my favorite turn based combat system to date. WHY DON'T WE HAVE MORE RPGS WITH THIS SYSTEM!?
Becuse that would require to much work lol
@@warp302 I'm not talking about overhauling the existing game. I'm taking about new games.
This was done 25 years ago. Why would that be too hard now?
@@JoeKnowsGames I know I was joking about how now game deves wanna do the lest amount they can
Yeah I miss turn based as well.
They do, theyre called Paper Mario XD
It needs to be remastered, and they just won't, and I'm sad. It's so freaking good. Get new graphics, and new players could play it.
I thought that this game was too simple in design. The game pick time event battle got stale very fast for me. I need something that allows for high level of customization and depth, like materia. Also has he played Vagrant Story?
OMFG I CANT BELIEVE HE COMPLETED MY FAVORITE TURN BASED RPG. This is so awesomely nostalgic. Legend of Dragoon remake please.
After all these years of asking. He finally did it! Woo! Thank you
Not The Legend of Giant Enemy Crab Rangoon
Legend of Dragoon is 100% my favourite game of all time. Glad to see it getting some love!
Thank you for finally completing this amazing game and letting more people know about it 😊
This is and will always be my favorite game of all time 🔥
i couldnt of agreed more
YEAHHH
I think I have more playthroughs of this game than any FF game to date on the strength of the battle system alone.
Hope you can do PS2 shining force. Really loved that game
I got this as a gift when it released. Never heard of it before, fell in love with it. It's my fave RPG for the scope, the battle system and the voice acting (lol). I would love a remaster but
RIP Japan Studio
Yo, this is my favorite turnbased games and one of my favorites of all time! Thanks for covering it dude
Oh man.... I loved this game as a kid! My parents took it away because they didn't like it... and I bought it again as a teenager and completed it 😅
I listen to the OST til this day, top 5 PS1 OST Album.
chrono trigger :p final fantasy 4
Yes. My favorite game of all time.
Nah the best RPG that isnt Final Fantasy is Parasite Eve :P
Cant wait to try it
There isn't many things that could make me happier than a remake of this game.. I used to play it once a year and was so excited to see it on the Playstation+ Classic catalogue and play it all again! Please play this game if you enjoy RPG's. You will instantly understand why it is considered one of, if not THE best RPG's from the PS1 era.
This one’s inspected! Nice to see love for it!
Such a great game. Wish it was remade or at least a sequel.
Always heard of this game but never got around to it
I never got to finish this game as a kid. I remember the game being hard as balls, so I guess I didn't grind. lol. I guess the game is ported to psn?
The first RPG I ever got into was Panzer Dragoon Saga (I was a Sega kid so of course I had a Saturn instead of a Playstation). Made me realize how much I was missing out on by not playing the genre.
While I did enjoy Legend of Dragoon, I enjoyed the Wild Arms and Lunar games much more.
One of the best that deserves more
I can't believe someone covered legend of dragoon. It's my favorite rpg of all time. Desperately needs a remake
My favorite game is finally getting love shown🥲
Took me years to see the end of this game as a kid and I was kinda mad at the “happily ever after” ending without any post game. But after multiple play throughs it is honestly so great
If they were to remake the game, they'd have to streamline the combat, make dragoon forms a bit better and redo the whole dialogue.
I can still handle the combat, slow as it is, but the dialogue just drives me crazy. The story is actually real great none the less though.
As someone that played this game 25 years ago, i never did any grinding, and still maxed out the additions. You could have just played the game naturally and gotten there without overleveling.
Yessssssss this my jam I can't wait
Love this game still own this game
One of the best games of my childhood ❤
I loved this game! Sadly though it's one of those games where the last save is in an area where you cannot go back, so if you felt you needed to grind a few more levels to beat the final boss..... tough luck...
Been waiting for this FOREVER
Still one of my top 5 favorite games of all time.
Man that game was so good I remember i got the dragoon stones for like everyone after using a gamefaqs walkthrough i printed up that game deserved a sequel so bad. So did Crystalis for NES.
VOLCANO!!! 🌋
HARPOON!!!
SPINNING CANE
Hands down my favorite game of all time.
Legend of Legaia and Xenogears also had some interesting battle systems for thier games.
I still think about the battle system decades later, it was such a simple but unique concept at the time. Today there are a lot more games with timed attacks as part of their system, but not many have made me feel the same way that Legend of Dragoon had.
Also yes it's entirely mandatory to shout out the names of the attacks when you complete an addition, "BLAZING DYNAMO!!"
HARPOON!
