    I had no idea how useful and powerful Picture Profiles are. The learning curve is incredibly steep which is the main downside but I'm now using your presets and even created my own custom black and white preset. I also had no idea Picture Profiles affect RAW files. This is incredibly handy as it means when I import RAW files into my photo editor, I only need to make a few subtle edits, maybe a subtle adjustment to the mid tone on a luma curve for example to get more of a film photo look. Massive, massive time saver. One day I'd like to create my own unique colour profile for my photography but the learning curve will take some time. I may even just use one of the existing profiles as a starting point. Well done for these tutorial videos!

    Excellent video. One question: can I create my own picture profile with rich colors without using a color filter? Was there a color filter on the camera you used to record this video? Thanks. Excellent video

    • @veresdenialex
      @veresdenialex  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Would you define rich as deep and slightly saturated? so maybe you are looking into high Color Depth values and a slight increase in saturation. You can only use the picture profile menu for that, but the Kelvin and color filters are helping a lot remapping/shifting colors.
      I used the Portra 800 film simulation to record this video and color graded it afterwards to push the colors even further

      Very good question, and sadly I haven't found any way of uploading the simulations onto the camera by using a document, card or anything like that. I believe the camcorders and cinema line are able to contain the information on cards, but they have a different menu.
      Alpha cameras can contain between 7-11 picture profiles, but you gotta manually input the settings

    Ok I have a few questions about these film simulations for Sony. Until now I've just shot RAW and edited each image. I also do a little bit of video and have mostly been using the Cinetone picture profile. I've read that with picture profiles you have two base ISO where noise is minimal. Since your simulations make use of picture profile are they based on just one type of profile (slog, hlg etc). I'm assuming these simulations can be used for video as well and I'm curious about base ISO. I don't use slog for instance, partly because I don't want to color grade video but also because the base ISO of 800 is too high for the shutter speed and ND filters I use.

    • @veresdenialex
      @veresdenialex  Před rokem +2

      My film simulations use variety of Gammas (still, movie, cine, hlg & s-log) so the base iso's vary, and also each camera model has different base iso's

      Glad you found it helpful!
      When I first started experimenting with picture profiles, there was little to no documentation available. Sony had some vague descriptions for each, but nothing much. So I had to experiment and see on my own how each option affects the image and how to leverage them to get the best colors out of the box. Now Sony provides a slightly more detailed documentation right here helpguide.sony.net/di/pp/v1/en/contents/TP0000909106.html
      Roughly after 1 year I came with my first 8 film simulations which can be found here czcams.com/video/SZDaH3k6BUw/video.html
      and now after 2-3 years we have 51 film simulation for Sony cameras that I feel makes the shooting experience much more enjoyable, by offering more interesting colors and contrast without the need of any post processing

    Hi Alex,
    I had a few questions in looking to buy the film simulations:
    1. Whats the difference between getting the film simulations pdf vs getting the lightroom presets ? ( any advantages of one over the other, except for the obvious that picture profile pdf will allow me to see the effects in camera while shooting
    2. Would the presets work on a Nikon D750 / sony A6000 (since nikon colors are usually toward the green side by default even in RAW)
    ( I aim to buy a sony A7C2, but for now I have these 2 cameras at hand )
    3. What would be the difference in getting the lifetime access vs getting the picture profile pack and simulations separately ?
    I've been searching for potra film simulations for sony for long ! Thanks a lot for doing this.
    Looking forward to your response to make my purchase !

    • @veresdenialex
      @veresdenialex  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Hello Alamini!
      1. The pdf recipes are in camera settings for great jpegs out of camera, while the presets were created specifically to match the raw files to the jpgs. There are 51 sony film simulations at the moment, and the preset pack includes 102 presets. The first preset is always a true replica after the sony film simulation recipe, meant to cut down the color matching process for the RAW files.
      The second preset will bring you closer to the real film stock, since in camera we have limited tool to tweak colors, I designed the next one to replicate the real film stock more accurately by using all the tools of Lightroom & Capture One.
      2. You can use the presets with other camera brands, but it won't look 100% like the sony. Each camera has a different color science, and also, the in-camera settings also affect the raws to a certain degree, it will just look different from the sony a6500, but it will definitely give your D750 a film look.
      3. Lifetime access is just my promise of getting lifetime updates, it does not include both the pdf and presets, you still need to add them seperatelly to your shopping cart since they are individual products, and whenever I bring an update you will receive it through email. That is lifetime access.

      @MrFxRex Před 10 měsíci

      I have the same WB question

    • @veresdenialex
      @veresdenialex  Před 10 měsíci +6

      Basically, the Settings are Daylight Balanced, but you can adjust them to your own scene for consistency in colors.
      Compared to real film , which cannot be adjusted on the spot, digital offers versatility. The settings presented are a starting point and you should definitely then according to your scene.
      I do it like this:
      Input your color settings and from there I mostly adjust the kelvin, but if the image comes out too magenta or too green I go into the color filter and start pushing it in the opposite direction to balance out colors. Be gentle, don't push it too much because it will create a predominant shift in the overall image. You need to gently massage it.
      And yes, the other settings are color variations for the same recipe. And the reason is because real film is volatile, depending on the way it was preserved, the way it was developed, choice of lenses, or how much it was exposed to air you will get different color variations.
      that why you will get different results by shooting the same film. Sometimes greener, sometimes more on the orange side
      When creating these film recipes I wanted to incorporate as many of these color variations, so I prepared multiple color settings so the user has options to choose from, and maybe get closer to how they remember images coming out of that film roll.
      Hope this made sense, let me know if you have any other questions

    I know a LOT of people think PPs don't affect the RAW photos, but they actually do.
    If you do a test and push saturation you will notice there is a difference.
    I notice this when I started shooting picures in Cinetone, and picures feel more soft and colors seemed a bit more cinematic.
    Though this is just in my mind, but after doing a test in a control enviroment, turns out PPs do affect.
    I think because RAW has so much latitude and color depth, it's less obvious if you dont grade photos dramatically.
    Hope this helps :D
    Btw i really enjoy the recepies you shared, and thank you very much for all the work you do and the exceptional content you produce :)

    Hi there
    I want to buy your pdf, but I have a question beforehand.
    I'm little bit color blind. I can't feel the subtle changes in color. Can you give me a cheat sheet for the white balance that I can trust and no need for tweaking?
    I do mostly indoor family events, sometime daytime, and sometimes at night.
    I have my niece bday coming up this 26th July and I want to use it right away.
    Can you help me with what kind of preset to use for the bday event? It's gonna be two times celebration. At lunch and dinner.
    Basically I just need your expert view on which preset is suitable and which Kelvin to set the wb for indoor daylight and indoor night time tungsten and I'll use it right away.
    Since I'm color blind I don't want to tinker with the Kelvin or color anymore than what I need to, that's why I want to buy your preset.
    Please advise and thank you in advance

      It's pretty hard to recommend a film recipe, since I don't know what colors you like, or the mood you are going for. Also, it's hard to recommend a temperature for indoor situations since I have no idea what light you have in the house. You can contact me through the chatbox www.veresdenialex.com/ and we can speak there more details. If you have any references of the colors you'd like for your shots, that would be very helpful for me.
